With the series on the line, India will be looking to bounce back in the second ODI of the three-match series against South Africa in Paarl.

Overview
South Africa vs India, second ODI
Boland Park, Paarl
January 21, 10:30 am local

India will have a lot to ponder after succumbing to a 31-run defeat against the Proteas in the first ODI. South Africa outclassed the visitors in all three departments of the game, but India are still a very strong side and will be looking to make a comeback in this do-or-die clash. There may be some changes in the Indian line-up, though. Most of the bowlers, apart from Jasprit Bumrah, went for runs on a track which had a lot of help for them. India also went with a very thin lower middle-order in the last match with an inexperienced Venkatesh Iyer batting at No. 6 and Ravichandran Ashwin at No.7. So, they might want to strengthen the batting line-up with a specialist batter in Suryakumar Yadav.

South Africa, on the other hand, came up with a thoroughly professional performance in the last match as they dominated the game in all three departments. They carried their form and confidence from the Test series into this ODI leg and will be looking to carry that momentum further forward to seal this series with another win. If they manage to do so, it will be quite an achievement for a side that is still in the rebuilding phase.

Remember the last time

Batting first, South Africa posted a total of 296/4, which was well above par on that track, riding on twin centuries from skipper Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen. Bumrah was at his best again as he registered bowling figures of 2/48, but the other Indian bowlers had no answer to Bavuma and van der Dussen's assault.

India started their chase well, with Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli scoring 79 and 51 respectively. But things fell apart when the middle-order failed to deliver. Shardul Thakur tried his best to resurrect the chase with a 43-ball fifty from No.8, but it came too late as the visitors still fell 31 runs short of South Africa's total in the end. It was a collective bowling effort from the South African bowlers as Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi and Andile Phehlukwayo claimed two wickets each while Aiden Markram and Keshav Maharaj chipped in with a wicket each as well.

What they said

Temba Bavuma (South Africa Captain): "We played close to the perfect game. Throughout my innings, I struggled to get the ball out of the middle and hit the ball in the gaps. Rassie though seemed to be batting on a different wicket. I think that partnership was quite key for us."

KL Rahul (India Captain): "There's so much to learn. We started really well and couldn't get wickets in the middle. I didn't bat after the 20th over so I don't know if the pitch changed, but Virat and Shikhar said it was a good wicket to bat on once you were set. Unfortunately, we couldn't get those partnerships in the middle."

India need to post a big total batting first. Hope the two Iyers come good.

Good chance for Ind batting to go big. No Rabada, Jansen, Nortje will help. Magala playing his 2nd match or so.

Replacing Jansen with Maghala is sheer injustice.

I don't know how one earth did this guy qualify to play in national team.

Strong start by India, need to make it count this time.

India have been so poor that RSA have decided to fill in their transformation numbers by playing Magala.

Dhawan gone to Markram…

…and Kohli gone to Maharaj!!!

Making the Markrams and Maharajs of the game look like world beaters.

India deserve to lose!

Maharaj to Kohli, out Caught by Bavuma!! Such a soft dismissal and Kohli is gone for a duck. One hand comes off the bat handle as Kohli drives and he finds cover. Dolly to Kohli and Maharaj is exultant. Tossed up on middle, Kohli wanted to go over Bavuma but maybe the ball stopped on him and he couldn't keep it down. After a good start, South Africa peg India back with two quick wickets. Kohli c Bavuma b Maharaj 0(5)

What has happened to Kohli?

He has been getting out in such lame fashion in recent times.

From those run out chances, it seems that Indian team is lacking good leadership

They should have sent in Shreyas Iyer in place of Pant, who could have been brought in for the slog hitting required post 35 overs. Should a wicket fall now, and it will be the slow Shreyas followed by the untested Venkatesh Iyer playing in the slog overs.

KL's captaincy needs some fine tuning.

Lol they just showed Rahul dropped catch earlier and very next ball they drop him again..

Pheww. Only if Kohli was as lucky as Rahul for catch drop. He can do with some good luck.

Painful inning by Rahul. Stat padding to a whole new level

Finally out

Poor Rahul gone.

No wonder we are so poor ion LoIs due to pretenders like Rahul, Dhawan and Kohli. They'll make middling scores but not before consuming a lot of deliveries.

Players like Dhawan and Rahul are like leeches, just keep hollowing out the team with their misdeeds.

This is our biggest misfortune that someone like Rahul is our captain.

We won't be making more than 250 with this sorry bunch, deserve to lose every game we play.

So far Dravid has proved to be such a panauti for our cricket.

How they survived this is beyond me!

Slow pitch for the first innings atleast. Not everyone vat bat like Pant on this deck. Hopefully, for India, it stays the same for the next innings as well.

Rabada, Ngidi, Nortje, and Shamsi all played that match.

Sorry mate. Yes I was wrong. I don't seem to remember a lot of games these days. As a kid I remembered every game of every series. Perhaps reflects the amount of cricket they play these days.

Great start from Bhuvi, 16 off his first over.

This Indian kit doesn't look good.
Blue jersey and purple lower. Wth.

When will these people understand that Bhuvaneshwar is done and finished (If they want they can get evidence from IPL)

Pant should focus more on his keeping. Running his mouth all the time. De kock should have been back in pavilion

Poor from Pant. Especially when he opens his mouth to sledge and then misses an opportunity

What about bumrah? Averaging over 100 since 2020

He still has good stats. But he should soon learn new tricks to stay at top... Another thing is performance of other players in the team does affect any player, it is a team game for a reason!

SA team looks pretty good when KG and Noritje come back. Can be dangerous. Might go back to the 90s early 2000s days.

Why in the world are india playing an odi game with 5 bowlers and 2 iyers. LOI'S are batsmen's game

Pant has no business running his mouth in LOIs. The game is not meant for it where things happen quickly.

No better sight than watching trundler Bhuvi getting massacred by the South African batsman.

No demons in the pitch. Watch chahal go the distance if SA dont lose quick wickets

Yeah...a great start for SA so far, runs coming easily without much effort.

India have been pathetic...Pant missing an easy stumping and the whole team looks so disinterested with no energy....even Kohli looks lost

one thing about kohli he used to create a siege mentality amongst the team, us vs the rest of the world, i think that motivated the players a lot on the field, they look very tame at the moment since kohli relinquished the captaincy.

It they were so interested in playing Bhuvaneshwar, they could have included him in Test Matches (overseas like South Africa), he could have been handy in picking wickets like Thakur and improved the batting depth. Could have easily played in place of Umesh Yadav. Here somebody like Prasidh Krishna should have been playing...

I think whole Indian Management is confused after Shastri & Kohli stepped down! Ashwin is playing in LOIs... Looks like he has got some free license now and can play all matches upto his wish! Some kind of revenge!

Bhuvi's struggling to pitch it up. Bowling short to SA batsmen on an easy paced pitch is asking for 4's nd 6's. Has he been injured or what? Surely India have got better bowlers than current Bhuvi

He clearly doesn't have fitness for 20 over cricket and you want him to play in Tests?

He should have been dropped from all formats. India have got Bumrah, Siraj, Shami, Krishna and Deepak Chahar to look to. D Chahar is also a better batsman.

Is this what we got after Kohli/Shastri regime? A huge dip in quality/passion (even eager/intent to play!) All we asked was improvement/perfection at that time! Last time we went there we dominated them in LOIs (5-1 in ODIs and 2-1 in T20s)

If India lose today, the preassure will be on Dravid right away.

And it’s always tough after captaincy change.

Btw, beautiful location with the mountains in background.

KL rahul batting at snail's pace for 60-70 balls and then getting out has no place in contemporary game.

Said that if they were to play him... Anyways they should have understood that he belongs to the famous "kumar" category who have their moments & then fade away quickly (Praveen Kumar, Vinay Kumar, etc). Not sure why they persisted with him for so long!

Both the Rahuls will finish indian team and take us back to 90s
Rahul is not even fit to captain a gully team , u never seen such a timid and uninspiring captain 🤦🤦🤦🤦

He is one confused human being out there! Dropped from Tests, Dropped from LOIs before, Asked to Wicket keep in LOIs, released from wicket-keeping, asked to bat in middle order in LOIs, back to opening in all formats, now asked to captain... I don't when he is going get a settled role in the team & becomes consistent...
