South Africa, who will aim to end their ICC Men's World Cup 2019 campaign on a winning note, face a stiff challenge as they will be up against an in-form Australian side in the final game of the league stage at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Overview

Australia v South Africa

Old Trafford, Manchester
2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Match 45
Saturday, 06 July; 13.30 local time, 12.30pm GMT

Australia have been a dominant force in this World Cup, winning seven of the eight matches so far. While the openers have been giving good starts consistently, Alex Carey, the wicket-keeper batsman, has shown his class with a match-winning performance in the last game against New Zealand. The bowling unit, led by the ever reliable Mitchell Starc, has been further bolstered by the inclusion of Nathan Lyon in the playing XI. Victory against South Africa will ensure that they head into the semi-finals as the top ranked team in the points table.

Middle-order batsman Shaun Marsh might've been ruled out of the tournament with a fractured forearm, but the Aaron Finch-led side has found an able replacement in Peter Handscomb, who had played a crucial role in the series win against India earlier this year.

South Africa, plagued by injuries and poor form of their key players, have had a disappointing World Cup. The four-time semi-finalists find themselves at the eighth position in the points table with two wins from eight matches. Chris Morris, Rassie van der Dussen and Imran Tahir were the only notable performers for a major part of the season. In the nine-wicket win over Sri Lanka, however, both skipper Faf du Plessis and Hashim Amla were at their fluent best.

The World Cup rivalry between these two sides is defined by the historic semi-final clash of the 1999 edition where Australia inched past the Proteas after a thrilling tied finish at Edgbaston. South Africa have had the upper hand in recent times winning eight of the last ten completed matches. Recent form and on-paper team combinations however, suggest otherwise.

Key Players

David Warner (Australia): The Australian opener has been in a rich vein of form, having scored 516 runs from eight innings in this World Cup. Warner, who scored a stroke filled 173 in his last outing against South Africa in October 2016, will look to produce a similar performance to carry his glorious run into the knockouts.

Faf Du Plessis (South Africa): The South African skipper showed his class with a fluent 96* in his last outing against Sri Lanka. Du Plessis, who averages 51.58 against Australia with four centuries to his name, will eye another big score against one of his favourite opponents, to power his team to a victory in their last game of the 2019 World Cup.

Conditions

A narrow band of patchy rain and drizzle is expected early in the morning which will clear away by the time the game starts in the afternoon. Cloud cover is expected for a major part of the day. Teams batting first have won each of the four games played at Old Trafford in this World Cup so far.

Squads:

Australia: Aaron Finch (c), David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Peter Handscomb, Alex Carey (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, Pat Cummins, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa, Nathan Lyon

South Africa: Faf du Plessis (c), Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock (wk), Hashim Amla, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Chris Morris, Andile Phehlukwayo, JP Duminy, Dwaine Pretorius, Beuran Hendricks, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir, Tabraiz Shamsi

• South Africa have won seven of their last eight men’s ODIs against Australia, four of
those victories coming when chasing a target and three when defending one.
• This will be the 100th scheduled men’s ODI between Australia and South Africa, the
head to head record is extremely evenly balanced so far, Australia have 48 victories
to South Africa’s 47, there have also been three ties and one no result.
• Australia and South Africa have met in five previous ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup
matches, South Africa won the first clash in 1992 but Australia are unbeaten in the
four meetings since (W3, T1).
• Australia met South Africa twice when the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup was last
hosted in England, in 1999, Australia won the Super Six stage clash by 5-wickets
before their famous semi-final at Edgbaston which ended in a dramatic tie with
Australia progressing to the final thanks to their higher Super Six placing.
• Australia have a 50% win rate from their 14 men’s ODIs at Old Trafford, alternating
between victory and defeat across their last five games there, losing the most recent
such match, a 1-wicket defeat to England in June 2018.
• South Africa have won two of three previous men’s ODIs at Old Trafford, the last of
those fixtures was in 2003 and their sole defeat at the Manchester venue was in 1994.
• Hashim Amla has 27 ODI centuries to his name, more than any other player for South
Africa and the fifth most of any player in men’s ODIs, he only has one in 23 previous
innings against Australia though, his average of 33 against Australia is his lowest
against any side he has faced more than once in the format.
• David Warner and Aaron Finch have both recorded five scores of 50+ at ICC Men’s
Cricket World Cup 2019, no Australian player has ever recorded six scores of 50+ at
an edition of the tournament.
• Australia’s Mitchell Starc (46) needs four wickets to become the fifth player to reach
50 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup scalps (Glenn McGrath 71, Muttiah Muralitharan 68,
Lasith Malinga 55, Wasim Akram 55); Starc’s bowling average of 13 is the best of
anyone to take 20+ wickets in the tournament’s history.
• Chris Morris is three wickets shy of 50 career ODI scalps, he is South Africa’s leading
wicket taker at ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, however he is yet to bowl against
Australia in an ODI.

I generally support SA over Australia anyday but if they beat Australia today, we end up on 8th. Win-win for me.

I expect Aussies to win this comfortably. South Africa is completely out of form.

It will be a copetitive match because Australia would want to finish top of the table. Hopefully South Afric, free from the pressure of choking will be able to give their best in this no pressure situation.

South Africa won the toss and opt to bat

Want to see Aussies chase 275+. So, hoping SA bats well and doesn't gets all out under 210.

South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first.

South Africa needs 300 minimum.

South Africa seems to have found their touch (too late!) But this is going to help India! (If India make sure they don't mess against Sri Lanka), we may top the group & play NZ.

Faf would want to end his world cup dream on a high. They played like their old self in the last match. Continuing with the form here...

Oh dear..... Indian dreams come true. Looks like we are going to see an INDIA NZ semi final.

Absolute disaster.

Each team plays for winning. No one thinks of positions of other teams

SA were always gonna win this
ICC would do anything for an India England Final

Nothing to do with ICC. South Africa is playing without pressure of choking and so they are giving their best.

South Africa struggles against spin. Aussies should use their part-time spinners along with Lyon.

This is the problem with SA. Dekock was a flop and there's just no batting depth. They have phehlukwayo and Pretorius coming up soon in the order. They will be a mid to lower mid team for a while. Top order can't bat long and there's no depth in the middle order

I am thinking like a Pakistani here... Australia are deliberately losing this match to avoid India in the Semis :))

That is not true, almost every team from 1-6 have same middle order but they have 1-2 key players at top who outshines other,

SAF-dekock,duplesis
Aus-warner,smith
Ind-rohit,kohli
Nz-willy,taylor
Eng-roy,bairstow
Pak-imam,babar

Now if you take these 2 out early ,any team would collapse.while other teams star players all played above average only SAF star players lost form.

As you can see in todays match, saf looks as good as any ,when thier stars play well

SA trying to make sure India wins the World Cup.

Friendly cricket boards sometimes help each other. Credit to CSA that they maintain good relations with BCCI and dont try due them for few million $$

Faf is old and will probably go. Also he was never in the Warner, Kohli, Rohit category. He was a ring or two below. Dekock and Markram were supposed to take SA forward. Markram looks similar to Rohit in his younger days. A few beautiful shots and then bust

There is no possibility whatsoever that AUS is meeting India in the semis. They are both at 1 and 2 no matter what and don't meet in semis. It's 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3. England is confirmed at 3 and NZ at 4 as they already played all their games

Good to see Cummins getting plastered. Dude thinks himself as wannabe-Mcgrath and was giving ‘warnings’ to other teams.😂😂😂 Come on Saffers, blast him to smithereens and show him his aukaat.

Ofc plesis is not same level, but he stepped up big time after divillers retirement.
sadly when he and dekock declined, amla and markram didnt step at all.or else it would have been a great wc for saf

Entertaining match on. Good to see SA playing well after their start to the tournament.

Faf Du Plessis is an excellent player.

Also I hope Smith scores big today.

And Pakistan lost from this middling Australia team with 2 batsmen and 1 bowler!!!!

cummins a fodder who is only good on helpful wickets. he is good in Australia and South africa where wickets are helpful. On any flat surfaces or rank turners or slow pitches he is completely useless. just like starc. australia is overrated and they will lose in the semis or finals especially if they lose the toss.

Smith is such a strange "cheat".

Thinks he has RvD run out and appears to challenge the umpire on why he went upstairs. As it turns out, RvD well in.

Not a likeable fella at all.

He's getting back in form.

Haha no century for VDD but good knock nonetheless.

Looks like a flat wicket so can SAF bowlers defend this ?

V Der Dussen what a find finally batted at no. 4 in for an exciting chase

I have no faith in overrated rabada but I hope the saffers can do It. spinners might do the job as the wickets will slow down later.

Come on SA... do it for India... we will owe you big time :)

I wonder league table would be different if these fixtures were played in Ascending order like Pakistan would be P 4 w4 p 8 :13:

Don't think South Africa are as bad as they have shown in this WC. Hope they make the harsh calls after this tournament that are needed.

Damn, if Oz lose this then it's a guaranteed spot for India in the final.

I have a feeling NZ will beat India. NZ tends to defeat India in big tournaments (World T20I was the latest). NZ has a mental block against Australia though.

Game is not over yet. Aussies bat deep.

India vs NZ at Old Trafford crazy things do happen any chance of Boult swinging it early on and India reduced to 25/3 and then labour to 250ish and NZ grind out with 8 balls left with Kohli bottling as skip. when the going got tougher #perfectSF

Dunno man, this Rohit dude's in red hot form.

Khawaja injured. Doubt he will play semi. Handscomb will probably play the semi.

Root dropped Rohit early in the innings. So did Tamim. Rohit probably wouldn't have scored that many centuries without dropped catches.

20/1 after 5.2 overs. Come on, Aussies.
