South Africa defeat Pakistan by five wickets in second ODI to level series 1-1

Graeme smith was referring to how animated he is a captain even kohli has calmed down but when he himself never leads from the front it can't have a good effect on the team. Smith was being kind on air, clearly thought he should calm down and was mincing a few words but it was clear what he meant. Didn't like that he came to bat after shadab and talat when the team was in trouble either.

You are added to the list - now Bhakths will come back to put you in place next time PAK wins or Sarfraz scores some runs. Even today, had PAK won, you would have read epics on his tactical nuances and vision of batting at 8 to guide the tail.

Didn't even need to.wait that long. Saw them crawling out of the Woodwork when it looked like pakistan might win at 80-5 and then act like it was all.bevause of him that they were I'm that position. :))

Excellent performance by these two. Yes they have been lucky at times, but they showed a lot of resilience. Well-deserved win for South Africa - time for them to stamp their authority on the series and win 4-1.

Van der Dussen has the mentality to excel at the top level. Good find for South Africa.
Aren’t you suppose to support Pak? Pak was a number one test team not so long ago plus won a CT ODI tournament. I am not sure what your complaint is?

I am real, at least so far in PP. One of the biggest reason for PAK's demise in cricket is speed gun - next time, please keep speed out of discussion with me. Fahim is absolute trash - our Mashrafee at 120K can teach him how to bowl in an International game.

Talat's batting potential is good, need to bat higher - he can't do worse than Mian Malik against pace.

What did Talat do in anywhere so that he should be brought back in team? His FC average is around 35. I think the FC average of a good batsman should be above 45, or at least above 40 for a pakistani. He didn't do good with bat, proved to be a fluke

Andile Phehlukwayo achieved career bests with both bat and ball and teamed up with rookie Rassie van der Dussen to earn the Standard Bank Proteas a famous series-levelling victory by five wickets with 48 balls to spare over Pakistan in the second Momentum ODI at Kingsmead on Tuesday.

The margin suggests a comfortable victory, but it was anything but the case as Pakistan bossed the middle part of the game through outstanding performances by Hasan Ali with the bat and Shaheen Afridi with the ball.

Hasan led an inspired Pakistan fightback from a disastrous 114/8 with only 18 overs left in the innings as he shared a Pakistan ninth-wicket record partnership of 90 off 80 balls with his captain, Sarfraz Ahmed, the latter playing in his 100thODI.

Hasan finished on 59 (45 balls, 3 sixes and 5 fours) while Sarfraz scored a supporting 41 (59 balls, 2 fours).

Their final total of 203 was certainly competitive and it looked a lot more than that when Shaheen blew a hole in the Proteas top order, taking three wickets in his first three overs. Leg-spinner Shadab Khan then backed him up by dismissing David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen cheaply and at 80/5 the Proteas looked a long way away from their target.

But Momentum Man of the Match Phehlukwayo (69 not out off 80 balls, 7 fours and 2 sixes) and Van der Dussen (80 not out off 123 balls, 9 fours) produced the sort of grit the Proteas will need when they travel to the ICC Men’s World Cup in May. Their unbroken partnership of 127 was a Kingsmead ground record and included the former’s maiden ODI half-century.

He also had career best bowling figures of 4/22 and for good measure took two catches off the bowling of Kagiso Rabada in the opening power play for a thoroughbred all-round performance.

Phehlukwayo, like Rabada, seems to have been around for a long time but he is even younger than Rabada at 22. He has certainly put up his marker as a contender for the critical No. 7 batting all-rounder position in the Proteas first choice line-up.

He rode his luck at times but there was no denying the quality of his strokeplay and its timing with none being better than the cover drive to raise the century partnership.

Van der Dussen has now made an aggregate of 173 runs which is the highest by any Protea in his first two innings in this format. What has impressed even more has been the temperament he brings to the job and the fact that he is a quick learner. After struggling against the Pakistan spinners on debut on Saturday he was their master this time.

The third ODI takes place at SuperSport Park on Friday (13h00 start, CAT).

Could Pakistan have won the match from 80/5 chasing 200 against SA in the same conditions. Doubt it very much, exposes the garbage bowling and captaincy

i remember sri lanka were 150 odd and we bowled them out... afridi 75 and a 5fer.

say what you want about him but he did win us some matches Pete Rose

This is a ‘how long is a piece of string kind of argument’. If any one of the current lot play 15 years for 300+ Odis I can guarantee they will give as many of not more performance than afridi. Part of the reason why some of our cricket is so poor is because teams like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh (of the past) helped prolonged the careers of that mediocre generation of cricketers

i agree

His List A average is better; but that's not the main reason. It's about role profile - in UK, you need a batsman who can bowl few overs of medium pace, so that teams can pick 1 spinner at least. Ideal candidate for that role was Umer Amin - I still think, he is hard done by PCB; but since he is not in contention, next is between Yamin & Talat.

PAK was in this position, not "because", rather "in spite" of him. And, that's actually true for CT as well and that Lord's Test as well (check the shot he played just before lunch FGS). And, this guy with his Coach is playing politics here - kept Rizwan out for Talat!!!!!!!!

Sarfi is a very average captain, can’t think outside the box , with 5 down the game should’ve been over in the 5-8 overs & typicaly a Pak team is the most likeliest to wrap things up but what a horrible bowing show 🤦🏽*♂️ the SA no7 deserves credit for somehow surviving & then staying till the end

This defeat is on a failure to read conditions. This was a new ball wicket. Once the ball got older, batting eased out albeit the pitch was double paced.

You just had to be patient, aim for 4 RPO after 30 overs and then aim for 235-240 which was defendable. Fakhar and Babar were going along nicely, but once Babar fell to the short ball trap it all went downhill bar Hasan Ali's late blitz. Yet again our ineptitude against the short ball was exposed despite spending a month in the country.

Pakistan's lack of game intelligence means a 2-0 was thrown away, and our poor record in Cape Town and Johannesburg means it'll be tough to win the series.

Than God you are not the part of pakistani team management. No person with cricketing brain would agree. Medium Pacers will be roasted on flat england decks

Before pushing the panic button, please understand Durban is a bowlers' pitch

Everybody wants everyone dropped.....smh

Before we make a bunch of pointless changes let's consider that BOTH teams struggled on this pitch in the first 30 overs, which indicates that when the ball was newer it was difficult to bat.

If BOTH teams top order crumbled it is obviously the pitch that was responsible.

Anybody who actually knows how to analyze stats would understand durban is a very slow pitch.

Take a look at the recent t20 in south africa....Durban had all totals of less than 150 whereas other grounds were 200 plus.

THIS OUTCOME SHOULD HAVE BEEN EXPECTED.

My personal issue is that we played Hussain talat over imad wasim when all the numbers indicate you need spinners here in the middle overs. Heck even the amateur analysts in the cricinfo match preview pointed this out. Our think tanks response was to drop imad wasim????

But forget it, nobody will understand this so instead go ahead and blame all the batsman.

Should’ve opened with Hasan here. Disgusting to see Faheem get the new ball despite having a dreadful seam position.

On Faheem, I’m getting increasingly frustrated because he’s yet to do anything notable with the bat in his international career and he doesn’t make it as a specialist bowler. If I were Inzi I’d start scouting for potential replacements.

Hussain Talat is an odd selection IMO. He clearly has glaring technical issues which have been exposed at the T20I level, namely issues with his grip. It’s clear the same issues remain yet they’ve picked him in a format where those issues will only be exemplified- it’s a lamb to slaughter kind of stuff.

This is why I did not celebrate our last win with gusto. Our next defeat is always within touching distance. We've no chance if this is the team we'll take to the World Cup.

Specalist captain pathetic comments have made sure this game is all about him and how poor our batting was will probably be ignored.

topspin remember when were told Faheem would make every side as a 2nd seamer :misbah

Now everyone saying he shouldn't be in the team.

What’s so funny is that he isn’t even on track to make the first team of a mediocre ODI side, let alone being “a top two bowler for most top sides” :rp

Agreed but when people criticise his captaincy like why didn't he bowl shadab sooner uday, something that even smith pointed out repeatedly, you have bhakts with be retort that he can't do anything. He doesn't bowl himself, it's like a cult with strange double standards. :))

Phehlukwayo and Van der Dussen reflect on record partnership

Wednesday, 23 January 2019

Andile Phehlukwayo and Rassie van der Dussen have credited one another for their record-breaking matching-winning partnership in the second Momentum one-day international (ODI) against Pakistan in Durban on Tuesday. The pair lifted the Proteas from 80/5 to 207/5 with a stand of 127 to help level the series 1-1 with three matches to play.

Phehlukwayo - whose match contribution of 4/22 and an unbeaten 69 earned him the man of the match award - says Van der Dussen’s calming presence during a high-pressure situation helped him stay in the moment and to execute his game plans.

“Personally I wanted to be positive,” he said of his intent at the crease. “ It was a hill to climb, there were still a lot of runs needed but we still had a number of balls in hand. Without Rassie there it would have been really tough. Credit must go to him, I think he played an unbelievable knock.”

It has been a frustrating stretch with the bat for the 22-year-old since his debut in 2016, his previous best score was 42 scored at the same ground in the same year. For him, it is a relief that the work behind the scenes is beginning to reap the rewards ahead of an important World Cup year.

“I put a lot of pressure on myself because I want to perform and contribute to the team with bat and ball,” he admitted. “All I can do is work hard behind the scenes and stick to my game plans. When I am out in the middle I look to implement that.

“I think it is the best performance I have delivered in a Proteas jersey,” he continued. “I’m glad that finally the hard work I have been putting in behind the scenes is paying off. There was a bit of luck but that is how the game goes. Hopefully I can take the momentum going forward.”

At the other end, Van der Dussen looked comfortable and composed as he continued his dream start to ODI cricket with his second consecutive score of 80 and above.

“I’ve played a lot of cricket in my life,” he said after the match. “As the levels go up the basics and fundamentals stay the same. When I am out there I try to play the situation and try to stay calm and cool under pressure. Whether it’s an international or domestic game I try to approach it the same.

“He is an aggressive type of player,” he said of Phehlukwayo. “He came in and changed the momentum of the game. He was the perfect player to come in. We always knew that if he came off he would get us close.”

The squad travels to Johannesburg on Wednesday ahead of the third match taking place at SuperSport Park at Centurion on Friday.

Phehlukwayo looked like on pieces of glass, it was quite fortunate of him he was being reviewed for SA broadcaster, who have been bias and shameless against Pakistan thruout series. Pakistani batsmen overshadowed the pathetic decisions of 3rd umpire and lbw projections of the broadcaster, due to their inability to play short or full of length bounce.

The batting continued to struggle against the short bowl. Hafeez soft dismissal on a slower bowl was outrageous. After many years he does'nt know how to play. This was expected from Inzi mafia.

Best thing of the match was Pakistani bowlers fielding, batting and bowling ready to give challenge unlike Pakistani batsmen.

19 year old Shadab Khan showed he has better mature technique than the Inzi nephew and all seniors combined. That hook shot off Olivier for six was an indication that the 20+ wickets he took will disappear to 20+ maximums if he plays against another opposition. Should send Inzamam a bouquet for helping him further his career.

With DeCock and Steyn returing, Pakistan has their work cut out in the remaining games.
