South Africa finish Day 1 of the second Test against Pakistan in a commanding position at 316/4

Man, I remember when I had high hopes from Imran Farhat. How wrong I was. His record is still significantly better than Shan though. A batting average of 32 is something Shan can only dream about.
As much as I want it to be wrong, it's true I guess. But Imran Farhat was prone to playing selfish knocks especially after his return from ICL. He did play a few good knocks, (50 against SL in CT 06), 50 in that Karachi test vs India 2006.
But Shan, he may not play selfish knocks like Imran Farhat used to, he simply can not play a knock at all. How he manages to dominate the domestic is a mystery. And he's been able to maintain this good guy persona on social media etc.

He scored a couple of centuries at home the start of his career against South Africa and India. I like the way he batted too. The stance and style of playing. But he was a mediocre player.

The best seam attack to play from Pakistan Mir Hamza, KS, and Abbas. 1000 FC wickets between them. No freebies. Good test match bowling.
I like your posts and you as a poster.

But come one bro. Bowling has been pretty ordinary and quiet a few freebies so far.

Hopefully it's not a long term injury for PaK's sake and he is at his fittest for CT.

Else , even a past it India can smack Pakistan

This is not good. NO no no no

Never put all your eggs in one basket as they say and Pakistan have done exactly that here unfortunately.

This looks like a good batting pitch. Pakistan might end up regretting the decision to leave out Noman.

There's enough in the pitch for bowlers too.

I want our batsmen to apply themselves here especially if they get starts. If you get set and stay till 40 overs, you can get a century here.

This is the best bowling attack Pakistan has fielded in the last few years. Genuinely experienced FC pacers rather than make believe “pace sensations” who have pace and will come good one day, which never comes.
It’s not been ideal, but still a lot better than the bowling I’ve seen in tests in the last 3-4 years. Had get been here, it would have been worse as this looks like a much better batting surface.

Selection of Aamir Jamal is a defensive move, he's being played primarily to boost the batting and the captain will end up not trusting him with the ball. Should have selected Noman instead

We have now seen 3-4 edges not carrying to the slips and still the slip fielders are standing way back. Our players and team management seriously lack game awareness

The simple reality is that Pakistan is simply not producing quality express pacers that have the capability to bowl long spells and still be effective. If there were any in our domestic system, they would have come to the fore in QeA Trophy cricket. Whether people want to admit or not, these three are our best test fast-bowlers.

Do we have plan to produce test quality tall pacemen? Does it seems possible?

No guarantee with spinners in SA. You are making it seem as if spinners are a usual attacking tactic in SA.

He could've ended up being a complete liability too.

Don't just go by SA's selection of Mahraj. Last test series Maharaj was picked in 1st test and he ended up bowling just 3 overs in 1st innings and 12 overs and wicketkess in 2nd.

Spinners are a huge gamble in SA.

Yup! We have to field our best pacers in domestic, which are these 3 guys.

If there are 6’4 140+ seamers who are tearing apart domestic teams with control and movement, I would be the first one to put my hand up and say get them in the team.

But I simply cannot get behind imaginary bowlers. Or pace sensations who will develop into test match pacers one day, a day that never comes…

It's a good question that I don't know the answer to. I think firstly we should temper our expectations because its not possible for any fast-bowler to play multiple formats and bowl at 140+ in this day and age.

As far as producing more 140+ bowlers is concerned, I think the thinking needs to change. And the focus on FC needs to increase from a young age. Bowlers need to learn to bowl long spells at a young age so they can grow naturally while maintaining their pace. Because T20 cricket is destroying the temperament and attitude of our players.

As i said earlier in my prediction, SA is supposed to demolish Pakistan in this match as its very difficult for a mentally fragile team like Pakistan to fight back after that painful loss to the tailenders in last match.

I don't know about every test. but looking at this pitch, looks like they made a blunder leaving him out. It's not as seam-friendly as they expected it to be.
I think there should be a specialist spinner playing every test match. It gives the team better balance and covers all bases.
There’s a reason why Nathan Lyon plays every test match, even if it’s in Perth, MCG or wherever in the world.
This 4 pacer strategy is nonsensical.

There has to be some qualitative analysis too.

Musa khan is leading bowling charts rn. If he keeps this up for another season, will you say his selection is justified?

I can confidently say he can't have a test career. Similarly, I can confidently say Mir Hamza will never get his test average below 30 no matter how much he plays.

Pakistan are absolutely screwed in this match. This feels like a 400 first innings total pitch. Which means Pakistan will get like 260. They will probably save the epic collapse for the fourth innings in the run chase.

No Noman to give you that edge in the second innings, and they are effectively playing with 10 players Saim likely out of the match.

The problem is that the format changes nearly season. Nothing is allowed to settle. This season in particular the quality of cricket is highly questionable.

But coming to your point, those three, along with Mohammad Ali have been the best performing pacers for a number of seasons now.

For me there has to be a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis for selection of test pacers.

For me the big miss in tests for Pakistan in last 5 years has been Ehsan Adil, a bowler who I'm absolutely confident would've had a successful test career and should've been a lock in Pakistan's test team for last 5 years.

rn, Mohd Ali too is similar and needs to get his chances on decent bowling surfaces like this one. No pt bowling them on smooth home pattas.

Don't think so. For example there was absolutely no need to play a spinner in the last match. And when you have someone like Agha in the team who can bat and bowl fairly decently you don't always need a specialist spinner in SENA if the conditions are really face friendly.

WTH... CRAZy...this is crazy... MR BUTTERFINGERS ABDULLAH the pathetic has dropped the catch...

Why would you choose Abdullah Shafique of all players as a substitute fielder? He’s the worst catcher in the squad
