What's new

South Africa vs India | 1st Test | Cape Town | Jan 5-9, 2018 | Day 1 | Discussion Thread

They would be up against Morne, Steyn, Philander and Rabada. Definitely not a walk in the park. If Kohli fails I expect India to be dismissed under 200.

No it's not a walk in the park by any means. But there is a lot of hype and bluster about this team, they should back it up now.

Only if AB had got a 100, this was SA game. But as usual he continues to be the same AB and leave the job half done.

His teasing foreplays are annoying. I'll cut him some slack even after 60 odd overs there's movement, no one has looked in.

Unless there is an injury, can't explain why Pandeya is bowling now!!!!

Enough runs on board! We will wrap HTBs under 200 runs! Great going guys!

Common boys get them for < 300

Need to bat for at least 15 overs today.

NOOO, If India bats today they are in trouble, they look deflated.. Best to rest up and come back tommorow, let the Safricans scramble around for a few runs here........

In these situations someone like a Wahab Riaz comes in very handy who can blast away the tailenders. These runs from the tail are mighty valuable for the Saffers. India needs to get the final two wickets ASAP.

Ab got out tamely misjudging the ball amla's wicket was worse. If those 2 stuck around 350 would have been easily achievable, SA are as much responsible for the score as the pitch or our bowlers.

The ball nipped back for AB's delivery. Yes Amla played a poor short, but credit to Bhuvi. The delivery prior had nipped back and followed it up with an away swing. Amla would have seen Makram's dismissal as well, it was really tough to judge which balls to leave in that first hour.

I suspect that this wicket will even out tomorrow and India should be disappointed if they don't get a lead of around a 100 here. Historically, batsmen tend to cash in at Newlands on Days 2 and 3 as the wicket quickens up after the moisture disappears, which allows the ball to come nicely on to the bat. De Villiers and Du Plessis threw away their wickets today and should really have gone on to score hundreds.

How did Australia do on day 2 when the wicket quickened in 2011? The wicket wasn't anywhere near this green. Sun was baking hot as well, no cloud cover.
I love fly by night experts on South African pitches.

Haha nice joke wahab is as useless as ishant sharma

Wahab Riaz has taken total 13 wickets of batsmen from #7. Grand total of 13.

But yeah, it's a good theory.

Vern is a seamer and has a good record in SA. Jimmy swings it but has no record to speak of in this country. If you bowl well in South Africa you get your dew rewards.

Vernon philander swings the ball too. You should know it as a protea fan.

No need to get tetchy, I remember a similar wicket in 2009 for a test between Australia and South Africa, where Australia were bowled out for 200 by Steyn and Ntini on Day 1, and the wicket eased out to allow SA to pile on the runs on Days 2 and 3. I admit I might have read too much in to it and defer to local knowledge.

100 runs added by Philander, Maharaj, Rabada and Steyn itself.

Poor captaincy by Kohli, why spread the field for tailenders? Make them slog. Too many singles on offer. Bring the field up, all this aggressive talk....

Poor captaincy by Kohli, the fielders are in the boundary, no one in the inner circle is saving singles. There's a third man and fine leg, unbelievable.

Kohli doesn't want to bat today. He knows the more overs SA get to bowl today more Indian wickets will fall.

He prefers to bat tomorrow.

That's my guess anyways.. . :)

Hahah ashwin got his very first wicket in south africa what a superb away record

Naive captaincy. Had South Africa under pressure at 12/3.

But instead of then staying calm, keeping things tight and under control, Kohli went all out. Got too excited. In such a situation, building pressure and stopping the flow of runs would have brought wickets.

Instead India have leaked so many runs, its funny. Believing in his own 'aggression' hype. South Africa have got 100 runs too many here.

India still in a good position to get ahead in the test though. Have to bat sensibly...pitch should dry out and slow down over the next few days.

There's 20 overs left, if SA were to bat at two to the over that would be 40 easy runs.
With SA's bowling every run counts. I'm perplexed really, got to back your bowlers in these conditions.

Steyn/Morkel/Rabada/Philander should be one of the ATG bowling attacks in SA conditions.

If Steyn is 100% fit, they should be one of the best bowling attacks ever.

We will see that in the course of the series , how good they are.

About 35-40 too many for India's liking. They need to see out the remaining overs now with the bat.

Now we will see how quick the pitch is.

I bet Dhawan will be back before facing double digit balls.

Dhawan will not last more than 10 balls against Steyn and Philander. If he can and score some useful runs, all credit to him.

Will be interesting to see him getting beaten by the moving ball. With no feet movement, he will be a sitting duck.

Not having Rahul for these conditions is a mistake.

Now time for Indian openers to shine. VK&co's time to walk the talk.

They should have get them out earlier IMO.

India has a golden chance to build a lead.

There is still assistance for pace bowlers.

Outside of BK, the rest of the bowlers should be disappointed with their effort. Shami/Bumrah looked below par. Pandya did okay. Ashwin got 2 tailenders.

More is expected of Shami & Bumrah. They should watch SA bowlers and learn.

Getting Dhawan on strike for the first over wasn't a good idea, Murali bhai..

Have been waiting for this quite a while. Steyn back and right on the money.

India has done badly in the first game of the last series against Eng, Aus and SL. I hope they do better this time.

:four

outside edge.

0.3
Philander to Dhawan, FOUR, decent stride forward from Dhawan as he squirts this good length ball through gully. Opened the bat-face nicely there, keeping it along the groun

Third boundary was an edge .. thick edge....but first two he was in control

Indian fort has been breached, expect the Saffer infantry to make small work of the remaining defense now.

Vijay was batting like Azhar Ali... thankfully he is dismissed no place in cricket for such timid batting.

Just as I say that. Wow. Shikhar Dhawan. This is not an international level test class batsman.

Rahane and Rahul are waiting. Vijay can't play such loose shots and hope to retain his place in the team.
