LONDON, THURSDAY - Sri Lanka has officially complained to the ICC for the manner in which their team is being treated in the ongoing 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Team manager Ashantha de Mel said that they had written to the ICC complaining about the type of pitches prepared for the Lankan matches, the practice facilities, the hotels and the type of transport provided for the team.

“This is a World Cup where the top ten countries are taking part and I feel that all the participants should be treated equally,” said De Mel.

“What we have found out is that for the four matches we have played so far at Cardiff and Bristol the ICC has prepared a green pitch, and at the same venues where the other countries have played the pitches are brown and favourable for high scoring,” pointed out De Mel.

The manager was referring particularly to the match between England and Bangladesh at Cardiff where 666 runs were scored (England 386/6; Bangladesh 280) and Australia v India at the Oval where both teams topped 300 runs and a total of 668 runs was scored on flat brown pitches.

“The pitch being prepared for our match against Australia on Saturday here at the Oval is green. It is not (a case of) sour grapes that we are complaining but it is very unfair on the part of the ICC that they prepare one type of wicket for certain teams and another type for others,” said De Mel.

The manager further pointed out that even the bus that has been assigned to transport the Lankan team is a small and cramped up one with less seating capacity whereas for instance Pakistan have been given a spacious double-decker bus.

“Even the practice facilities provided at Cardiff were unsatisfactory. Instead of three nets they gave us only two and the hotel we were put up at Bristol did not have a swimming pool, which is very essential for every team for the fast bowlers especially to relax their muscles after practice. The hotels that Pakistan and Bangladesh were put up at Bristol had swimming pools,” pointed out De Mel.

“We wrote to the ICC listing all these shortcomings four days ago but so far we have not had any response from them. We will continue to write to them until we get a reply,” he said.

Certainly it is no way to treat a former World Cup champion nation. Sri Lanka were past champions of the World Cup having won it in 1996 and were finalists on two other occasions in 2007 and 2011 whereas countries like England, New Zealand and South Africa have yet to lay their hands on the most coveted silverware.

De Mel was also quite critical of the timing of the World Cup being held in the early part of the summer that has resulted in several matches being affected by bad weather. Sri Lanka had both their matches played at Bristol against Pakistan and Bangladesh abandoned without a ball being bowled, while only 7.3 overs were bowled in the match between South Africa and West Indies at Southampton.

“What they should have done is played the Ashes series first and then held the World Cup in the latter part of the summer which is generally dry. It seems like the Ashes has more clout than a World Cup,” De Mel said.

PRADEEP BOWLS AT PRACTICE

The good news for Sri Lanka is that Nuwan Pradeep who dislocated the little finger of his right hand at practice ahead of the World Cup game against Bangladesh had a bowl at the Oval nets today (Thursday) before rain curtailed practice.

“Nuwan bowled for about 15-20 minutes and he did not feel uncomfortable, but we will have to check out whether he can field without feeling any pain in his injured finger,” said De Mel.

“We will have a fielding session for him tomorrow (Friday) and if he gets through, he will be available for selection for the Australian match,” he said.

I know England gets the best batting surfaces. Not sure about others. India played on a bouncy pitch against SA. Same way BD vs SA match was a flat pitch where BD actually won. England is never going to get a bouncy or seaming pitch in this world cup.

Only England have gotten batting belters all other teams have had pitches that are up or down. So if you are playing England next except a high scoring pitch.

SL is right, why is England not playing on green tracks and getting all flat decks.Poor SL is getting slaughtered on green pitches, how can their batsmen get any rhythm.

Add India to that aswell. They will get flat pitches entire tournament.

This is all pre-planning by ICC to minimise any chance of upset. They are striving hard to have an Ind vs Eng final

yup. But i reckon india and aussies are going to beat them..lol..
We got a flat pitch against them, a nice bouncy one against the windies (i felt we got a bit ambushed there lol), adn then a bowling pitch against the aus..all those matches were great matches,,

I think the lankans have a point. They are being treated poorly because they dont put bums on seats..end of. It would be amusing if they surprise everyone and sneak into the semis then shock the world by getting into the final lol..

In 2003 world cup, pitches were true pitches. No uneven bounce. Bit of pace , bit of bounce, bit of movement while it was great for batting. This is the first time i see alarming difference between pitches. Add weather conditions. On some pitches with grass and cloud it is even harder. Ideall you want true pitches in every match. Bit of something for everyone.

The Lankans are not whining. These are genuine complaints. We all know how fair ICC is so let’s not even second guess the poor Islanders.

Fair points. But then it's clear now that an India-England final will get the most money for ICC.

If every pitch behaved the same way it makes for dull cricket. The ICC curators have been unfairly criticised by some - they deserve credit for restoring bat-ball balance in this WC and for producing a variety of pitches.

It's up to the players and teams to adapt.

yes I remember..and the two best teams got to the final. I'm not sure whats going on in this tournament. As a Pakistan Im angry because we haven't taken our chances..had a great chance to beat aussies and the windies and blew both of them, then screwed over by the weather..

the pitches have been very up and down and inconsistent but flat for England and I have ti say for india too..we will get a belter at old trafford on sunday..

Well if they are not exaggerating in their comparisons about the hotel, transportation etc they have every right to complain.ICC needs to be consistent with their facilities for every team.

As for the pitches, apart from the England matches, the rest of the teams have faced mixed pitches so i wouldnt say that they have treated only Lanka unfairly in that matter.

That pitch against Afghanistan was the greenist pitch I have ever seen.

I wonder if it was true HD that made me see more of the grass? I watched it at someone else's place who has very high quality setup.

ICC statement:

"We employ an independent pitch advisor to work with the host curators at all ICC events and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 is no different," a statement read.

"We are happy with the wickets that have been produced across the event so far in English conditions."

"As part of the four-year planning process to deliver this event, we have liaised with all teams to ensure they are happy with their set up and are available to work with them should any issues arise that have not been previously anticipated," the statement continued.

"At the heart of our planning is the philosophy that all 10 teams are treated equally to enable them to have the best possible preparation for the event."

what kind of response is that? So SL complains about the treatment being not up to their satisfaction and ICC responds that it is up to their own satisfaction :)

This is the type of answers that irks me. Administration will always give these type of replies. Even at my workplace if we Lodge a complaint, then similar replies are provided. And that's the end. You can't pursue any further.

All teams should be treated equally in terms of facilities and schedules. Pitches can vary, this is England in the middle of the wettest June on record but pathetic from the ICC this.

You could see from the color of the pitch. Not sure what the motivation is. But i don't see any green in any of the England matches. Others played on atleast one green tinged pitch.

I think Pakistan too has already played two matches on green pitches.

ICC should prepare a green pitch for the England vs Australia match.

England are only getting pitches which suits their batting...

Sri Lankans whinge too much. If they spent as much time trying to improve their cricket, it would not matter what kinds of pitches they got.

What green pitches are Lankans talking about? In their first game, kiwis scored 137/0 in 16 overs. Against Afghanistan, Lankans were 144/1 in 21 overs before Nabi took 3 wickets in 1 over. So don't think their grievance has much merit.

Genuine points by SLC other teams should also jump in this format the venues and pitches are designed in a way that India England nand Australia have max. chance to progress heck on even in today's game the boundaries were longer as Eng knew they were up against WI

With the amount of washouts icc gonna need a eng v ind or a pak v ind final to break even!!

They going to do that by hook or by crook.

How is India getting flat pitches. Some people have to whine everything concerned about India. If Pakistan is putrid in handling bounce how is that India's fault. Pakistan has no reason to complain about India.

SL yes they have gotten the most greenish pitches.

The pitches wasnt their main complaint but they facilities on offer. ICC think because Sri Lanka is a small nation they can get away with treating them differently.

Since this big 3 nonsense, the ICC as an organistion have become more pathetic by the week.

I never like official complaints abiut pitches unless they are dangerous...can't play on a pacey pitch? Drop out of the tournament.

What does sound quite bad is the drop in quality in terms of transport and hotels that the players have apparently been afforded in comparison to other sides. Why has the ICC not yet responded to these claims?

I don't have any problem with green pitches or brown ones, but there should be consistency across the board. It does look odd when you have nice golden pitches for some games, then suddenly you see heavy green surface on others. Obviously wickets will vary from ground to ground, but during the bilateral series Pakistan played with Engand, they were all beauties for batting on, and we never saw grass on any of them.

I think Pakistan too has already played two matches on green pitches.

ICC should prepare a green pitch for the England vs Australia match.

England are only getting pitches which suits their batting...

For Pakistan's benefit, eng should get a belter vs aus.

Not the first time the Lankans have complained at an ICC tournament.

Add India to that aswell. They will get flat pitches entire tournament.

Both of India's matches were on difficult tracks with awkward bounce. Anyone who saw at least 50% of either match would attest to that.

In fact, if the IND vs NZ match would have happened on the 13th, that too would have been on a spicy seaming track as it was raining for 4 straight days before that.

So basically every pitch India's played on has been assisting bowlers. It's just the quality of Indian an Australian batting that they managed to cross 300 runs in each innings. As we saw, a weaker South African batting lineup only managed 230 on a more or less similar track.

The only team that has played all matches on flat tracks is England.

Agree with you.

The should have kept these excuses for their local media's consumption after the campaign.

'Unfair' pitch conditions at The Oval favours Australia: Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka have complained to World Cup chiefs about the pitch on which they will face Australia at the Oval, believing it will give Justin Langer's side an unfair advantage.

Although their two most-recent matches were washed out in Bristol, Sri Lanka began their campaign on two bowler-friendly pitches in Cardiff, where they lost to New Zealand and clinched a narrow win over Afghanistan.

And heading into Saturday's crunch encounter against Australia in London, Sri Lankan team manager Ashantha de Mel believes they will face another green track which will aid their opponents.

"What we have found out is that for the four matches we have played so far at Cardiff and Bristol, the ICC has prepared a green pitch," he told Daily News.

"At the same venues, the other countries have played on pitches are brown and favourable for high scoring.

"The pitch being prepared for our match against Australia on Saturday here at The Oval is green. It is not sour grapes that we are complaining.

"But it is very unfair on the part of the ICC (International Cricket Council) that they prepare one type of wicket for certain teams and another type for others."

The Sri Lankan camp were also disappointed with the standard of training facilities and accommodation, according to de Mel, who said the concerns were officially brought to the ICC's notice.

"Even the practice facilities provided at Cardiff were unsatisfactory," he added.

"Instead of three nets they gave us only two, and the hotel we were put up at Bristol did not have a swimming pool, which is very essential for every team - for the fast bowlers, especially, to relax their muscles after practice.

"The hotels that Pakistan and Bangladesh were put up at Bristol had swimming pools."

The ICC confirmed they received the complaint but dismissed allegations about pitch and unfair treatment.

"We employ an independent pitch advisor to work with the host curators at all ICC events and the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 is no different," the governing body said in a statement.

"We are happy with the wickets that have been produced across the event so far in English conditions.

"At the heart of our planning is the philosophy that all 10 teams are treated equally to enable them to have the best possible preparation for the event," it added.

"As part of the four-year planning process to deliver this event, we have liaised with all teams to ensure they are happy with their set up and are available to work with them should any issues arise that have not been previously anticipated."

If lanka get flat belters, their bowlers will concede 400 + on them. ICC is actually doing them a favour by giving them green pitches.

“What they should have done is played the Ashes series first and then held the World Cup in the latter part of the summer which is generally dry. It seems like the Ashes has more clout than a World Cup,” De Mel said.“

What nonsense.

The main event gets played in High Summer - The Ashes.

The World Cup is less important to the British public so it gets played in the cooler, wetter part of the summer.

After all, viewing figures on British TV for this ICC World Cup are ELEVEN TIMES SMALLER than for the Womens’ Football World Cup.

Winning WC this year might push it to the main event bracket.

Eleven times smaller as the cricket world cup is on Sky and not terrestial TV.

Women's world cup is on terrestrial TV and that's why viewing figures are high.

Cancel the world cup of any more games are abandoned. As cricket fans, we should just boycott it.
Enough of this pathetic planning.

Sri Lanka look a bit silly now complaining about the “green” oval pitch given how easy it has looked for batting so far.

India will fare poorly if we get flat pitches. India will do best when the pitches are sporting..

LOL what are you talking about ? We are the #1 on flat pitches. Look how many 300+ scores in ODI and double hundreds we scored at home. If the pitch is flat, we take it easy and eat it.

Then why didn't the SL team get hotels with Swimming pools ? This a WC and you can place one of the 10 team in a hotel with swimming pools ? I wonder how Afghanistan is being treated. ECB is garbage. Watch how we treat players in the next WC.

This wc is made for the big 3 to get to the semis so not surprised. This wc is not even worth watching for others. Atrocious setup and planning, lost alot of interest in cricket because of this wc.

They don’t have the class of the top teams anymore.

Surprising, they were consistently a top tournaments team for last decade or so.

Cry babies

When you dont have players without brains and talents and right team selection , you will loose interest...

lol. didn't realise the sarcasm.

Haha, this is exactly what I was talking scout yesterday.

ICC is systematically making sure who should go to semifinal.

Just look at the pitch we got yesterday against Australia. It didn't offer any spin.

But I can bet that it would've been a different scenario if India was involved in the match.

This world cup is completely farce. There's no pride in winning on these doctored wickets.

Totally agree with the Lankan authority here.

Nobody is stopping Lanka from making 350 and putting pressure on the English batsmen and beat them at their own game. No point crying about it.

Cricket in general doesn’t matter to the British public.

You could have held these events in any order and it wouldn’t have mattered.
