The 2016 U.S. Elections Thread

Immigration has been the single biggest issue for the masses in the last 20 years now.The GOP elite refused to do anything about it because of corporates wanting open borders causing immense frustration.Trump has tapped into this successfully. He is a shrewd man.

Clinton only won states that Democrats stand zero chance of winning in him the general election aside from mass.

Sanders won the states they have a chance to carry.

Lol Rubio won his first state thanks to Somalis who have ruined Minnesota.

Trump is easily going to take 25% of the Democrats with him and cruise to victory.

Ben Carson to FINALLY drop out of the race by the end of the week. Here's the highlight of his campaign:

Cruz winning Texas is no surprise. Its his home state after all . If he didn't win texas then he doesn't really stands a chance to win anything . I am surprised by Trumps rise though, this is unreal !!!! . It'll be a fun election . Wen;t to vote in teh primaries yesterday , There were at least 150 people where i voted. They were saying it was the highest turnout for primaries .

Not really, Clinton was overtaken by Obama in May of 2008, its just March and her strongest states (the southern ones) have gone.

Naa brother. Sadly Bernie is done. I think Bernie has started a revolution, people will look at him as a hero down the road in 30 years when US catches up with rest of the developed nations.

Hahaha People think Trump is going to deport 11 Million people, build a wall and act all crazy as he sounds now. Trump will not do that. Trump is dumb, but not that stupid. He will act less crazy and radical when he becomes a president. His far right supporters will be disappointed when he becomes a president.

Building a wall isn't difficult at all and I could see Mexico paying one way or another.

He won more votes from Hispanics than the two Hispanics Running against him in Nevada.

Lots of people want a wall.

overall it was the best possible result for trump. rubio, kasich and cruz won just enough to keep going but not enough to take away from trump's momentum.

Lol, the posters who are happy about Trump's view on Palestine .. Seriously guys!!
The absolute hater of Muslim world, who suggest carpet bombing Muslim regions, you like his opinion because he thinks its inconvenient to interfere in Israel Palestine affair. Going by his hyperbole, He would carry out a genocide of entire Muslim world if he needs to feel a sense of Security.

And our fellow posters go YAAAY. Trump is sensible on Israel. If finds the need for Israel, he would lead the American tanks rolling into Gaza and wipe out Palestine the next day. Jewish lobby doesn't concern him for now, but ideologically he is far worse than any right winger in Israel.

Just

Bernie looks like VP candidate with Hillary. This has been suggested many times.
Neither Bernie and Hillary seemed opposed to this idea ever.

You must try so hard to kiss up to whitey, don't you?

No idea how Somalis voting for Rubio en mass can be equated as me "kiss up to whitey. "

I promised you weeks ago Trump would dominate and youve got egg all over your face.

He is going to act like a typical conservative president. He will reap up the votes but he will settle down. He knows he can't afford to be the most hated leader. Don't listen to media, US media are funded by big corporates who fund the democrats and the republicans. Remember this is the primaries, many won't vote at all.

Hillary isn't different from the conservatives. Hillary is controlled by the corporates, the media stations are too controlled by them. Bernie supposedly have suffered a major defeat according to the media. The truth is that she won the states that she was expected to win. The upcoming states aren't her strengths. The states that Hilary has won so far are the states that will always vote towards the republicans. Media is being way too negative on Bernie's matter because they want him out. Bernie is the only one that isn't being controlled by anyone.

Its all about the lesser evil man, Hillary will win by a landslide against Trump.

If Bernie gets nominated, Michael Bloomberg would have jumped in and ensured Trump presidency.
Americans are still to much attached to capitalism as a core ideology to not be affected by Red Communist flags that will be associated with Bernie by Republicans.

Trump got a kicking at the Fox debate last night. Cruz ripped him for funding Democratic presidential candidates in the past, Rubio attacked him for his vagueness on policy and the fraud that is Trump University whilst the Fox moderators actually did some journalism for once and found Trump's sums just don't add up.

Oh and Trump boasted about the size of his brass. Only Donald Trump.

Its funny seeing Fox and the Republican establishment desperately trying to put the genie back into the bottle. Fox created this monster. The candidates have all become Rush Limbaugh. This is who the GOP are, they've engaged in dog whistle politics for decades, encouraged casual racism and sexism - only now Trump comes along and just blurts it out in public.

dont know how i felt about moderators clearly picking on trump more than the other guys. just seems like a calculated attack on just him to trash his personality. they should at least try to appear a bit more neutral

Fox are the media arm of the Republican establishment who hate Trump. Its interesting how divided the American right-wing are - you have Glenn Beck who opposes Trump, Mark Levin supports Cruz whereas Breitbart support Trump.

What is LAUGHABLE is these right-wing nuts complaining about Trump's "vulgarity" and they wouldn't want their kids watching the debate !

So Trump saying we should bring back waterboarding and doesn't care if we torture innocents, Cruz saying we should carpet bomb the Middle East and not worry about civilian casualties, that the US should ban Muslims from entering, being pro-gun to the point where they don't even care if lunatics shoot up a class of schoolkids, being anti-science, anti-immigrant and anti-black - ALL of that is OK but Trump referring to his privates is "vulgar" ! Rank hypocrisy.

Guy in sherwani gets kicked out of Trump rally :))

Saqib's video prompted some awestruck responses on the internet. One man asked: "Let's get to the important business. Where did he get that jacket? I need that jacket or something close to it. Not kidding."

Another commentator suggested that "the reason he got kicked out was that Donald trump got jealous of his hair," while someone confessed that "to be fair, I thought that was Prince until he started talking."

And Donald Trump's take on all this? He allegedly said Saqib looked like an 'Elvis impersonator.'

trump had a comparatively bad day yesterday but rubio had an awful one. i don't understand how he is less likable than cruz. i know cruz is favoured by the evangelicals but he has no personality at all!

Unbelievable, this race is not over yet.

Bernie Sanders wins Michigan despite being down 22 points in recent polls ! Despite still being behind in the delegate count to Hillary Clinton, its huge. If he’d lost it would've been difficult to state he can still challenge the Clinton machine. He will likely be able to use this win to get another round of fundraising and gives him momentum heading into the big states on March 15.

Its still an uphill battle don't get me wrong, the delegates are divided proportionally meaning Clinton still picks up delegates despite her defeat, but Sanders is alive and kicking.

Rubio is Latino, not a good thing to be if you are running for a republican candidate. He isn't manly enough, doesn't have the confidence or the body language of a good leader. The elder generation is very good at picking up these things. Cruz is Latino as well, but he is White, so he is alright. Cruz also sounds like the people of Southern US population.

Cruz isn't Canadian. He was just born there when his parents were there for work. Cruz sounds like an American, kinda dumb and backwarded.

I guess to americans he is. I have posted the pic available on internet.

For the first time in US history big corporation, superPacs, and most importantly negative media coverage is not having a significant impact on the overall election result at least so far. Donald Trump has big donors and actual indiviluals running and controling US politics shaking in their boots with his self funding campaign. I might not agree with everything the Donald says but he is by far the better choice as US President for US and the rest of the world than the bought out puppet politicians.

I might add the stand that Trump has taken on the issue of Israel and Palestian would have sink any US politician republican or democrat, its a testement to his appeal that he is overcoming the odds despite unprecedented effort by the media and the elites to stop him.

If being Latino or Hispanic was a major hurdle than he wouldn't have gotten this far. Cuz is a Hispanic too. And Ofcourse he would have a Texan accent considering he grew up and lived there all his life. Rubio didn't grow up in one state and was in Florida hence the neutral accent.

As far as the elections are concerned it was interesting to see Sanders make a comeback and pull a shock win. But the state wasn't winner take all so the delegates he will get are essentially the same as Clinton will get from Michigan. On the other hand Clinton won by a significant margin in the second contest so she is well well ahead of Sanders. With the super delegates likely to go with Clinton the race is pretty much done in the Democrat side. Sanders' campaign got it wrong big time by not focusing enough on minority voters. Another interesting thing to note is that Sanders is getting more support from traditionally Democrat states while Clinton is sweeping the South and other states which almost always vote Republican in the Presidential Election. So as far as Presidential elections are concerned Sandera might have been a stronger overall candidate after getting the minority vote.

The Republican field believe it or not is closer in my book. However it's a sorry take. I know many people here don't want Trump to be the nominee and would take Ted Cruz over him but the reality is that Cruz holds the same views as Trump on most issues. He is a politician so more politically correct in expressing those views so you don't see as many controversial statements from him. But don't make the mistake that his views are radically different and that he will be better for minorities and is any less bigoted. In fact he is more dangerous. He genuinely holds the views he espouses whereas with Trump it's more a case of playing to the gallery. In fact there is a high likelihood that when and if in a position of power he will not really pursue his more radical views and there is already evidence that some of these statements were for media and public consumption. However Cruz is genuine in the views he holds and is a politician with experience. His record as Senator points to his extremely conservative record and credentials. Rubio would have been a decent candidate but has a couple of major things going against him. First is that he is a first term Senator with a terrible attendance record. The Republican electorate hates Obama and often point to the fact that he was a junior senator too when he ran for Presidency. So they tend to equate that with Rubio who has an eerily similar political career path so far. So the experience with Obama makes them Skeptical of Rubio and this hurts him. Among others the major hit to Rubio in my opinion is the mood of the electorate. The American people especially the Republican electorate is angry. They partly blame this anger on the activities of the Washington elite. Hence the support for an outsider like Trump. However it's wierd to see Rubio not get this at all. He keeps accepting and pushing for nomination from the GOP establishment and every day you hear some Republican senior political figure endorse him. And the more he is positioned as an establishment candidate which is the last thing he would want to be known as. However the damage is done in my opinion and he has clearly picked his side.

The best hope to defeat Trump is for one of the other candidates to win winner take all states and hope for a broker convention where the senior GOP figures will have enough leverage and sway to dump Trump

I might add the stand that Trump has taken on the issue of Israel and Palestian would have sink any US politician republican or democrat, its a testement to his appeal that he is overcoming the odds despite unprecedented effort by the media and the elites to stop him.

In a subsequent Republican debate on CNN, as all the other candidates engaged in what has now become a ritual contest over who is the most pro-Israel, Trump briefly departed from the usual script.

“It doesn't help if I start saying, ‘I am very pro-Israel, very pro, more than anybody on this stage,” he declared.

Nevertheless, he went on to insist, “With that being said, I am totally pro-Israel.”
Doesn't sound like a principled stand.

The big Repub donors seem to be backing Rubio because they can control him like they did Bush, instead of backing Trump who they cannot control.

I wonder if the neocons would actually prefer Clinton to Trump? :13:

Robert Kagan - Papa Neocon - has already said Clinton will be a great President. And they fear Trump.

What r the chances of trump winning, can someone enlighten me...seems like he easily came out top in republican party

very high if somebody else was in his position but since it's trump there are other permutations at play atm.

rubio out.

If it comes down to Trump vs Hillary then its Trump, America might have elected a black president but i doubt if they are ready for a female president yet.

Why do you say that US is not ready for a female president? They don't think women can do the job ?? what's the reason ?

Disappointing night for all Sandersnistas. They just called Illinois for Clinton, and after trailing in Missouri, she's got the lead there too. That could make it five out of five, and the momentum from the Michigan upset is gone.

So most likely it will be Clinton vs Trump. Congrts to Clinton for winning and being the first female President. Even republicans might vote for her over Trump. Hopefully Sander's supporters won't stay at home.

Wow can't believe Trump has come this far, always knew America was full of dumb nut cases but never knew it was so bad that a clown like Trump will come this far. All the sane people i know support Sanders so it's surprising that he is not even a leading candidate in his party.

If Trump becomes president somehow then it will definitely be a black day in American history.

Sanders is a joke..Grandpa should go home to Vermont and eat Ben & Jerry's. As for Trump. What has he done who regular politicians have not done already...exploiting people's fears, telling people what they want to hear, making promises which can never come true, finding a convenient scapegoat in form of China, Mexicans, Muslims etc....As for his personal life, JFK and Bill Clinton were even worse womanizers. And what will happen to American if he becomes President. Nothing. If America can survice decades of rule by career politicians whose only purpose in life is to get themselves re-elected and hang onto power, I am sure it can survive Trump as well, who by the way is far more centrist than people give him credit for.

Sanders ain't no joke, Clinton's been pushed all the way in this campaign. Remember at one point in the national polls Sanders was trailing by 50%. In Kansas he was down by 10% but won by 35%. He won Michigan despite trailing by 20%.

The key for Clinton now it looks she's the likely nominee is to mobilise those Sanders supporters who may not turn out in November.

The comedy has been on the GOP side if anything. Trump many years ago said if he was to run "he'd run for the Republicans as their base will buy anything" - prophetic words.

The win in Michigan was a fluke. After resounding victories in Ohio and Florida, she really is unstoppable. She proved she can carry the big states, the South and now the Mid-west. That win in Ohio came despite Sanders outspend Clinton in Ohio for over a week before the voting. I know Grandpa is here to play the long game but its really more about pushing Clinton to the left and going into the convention and having his moment at this point. He has no way to win the nomination. As for his poll numbers rising, there really wasn't any alternative to Clinton on Dem side so he end up getting all the anti-Clinton votes plus his usual white liberal hippie crowd.

Clinton has name recognition that was always going to be hard to beat. Looking at issues more people agree with Sanders than Hillary. Bernie has been able to drag her to the left on many issues. If she runs against Trump or Cruz she probably can stay on the left and still win.

Trump in a CNN poll has a 73% unfavourable rating with women - and that was before his comments that women should be punished for having an abortion !

Head to head with Hillary Clinton he trails 51-35.

So does Cruz still have a chance to win? I actually prefer Trump over Cruz.

In any case, I hope Hillary wins. Starting to get really annoyed with Bernie. One thing I've noticed about Bernie and Trump is that they tap into the emotions of the voters. Their campaign is based totally on emotions and not policy.

I thought they only way to be president is you have to be born in the USA.
No you have to be a natural born citizen ie be an American at time of birth which either as a result of being born in the US or being born to an American citizen

Considering that I will most probably be returning to the US in a few years it seems from a personal perspective these would be my top choices:
1) Clinton
2) Trump
3) Cruz
4) Sanders

Bernie is stumbling right when it matters: before the NY primary. Just when it seemed he had momentum and cutting into Hillary's lead in NY, that interview from a few days ago is giving the opposition plenty of fodder. I hope he can turn things around these last few days.

NY primary just a week out! Hopefully Bernie can some how come out on top. If he can win here, then he can win anywhere after this.

Why is the NY primary closed though? Making it closed pretty much denies the right to vote for such a large number of people.

I don't see Clinton becoming the next US president. If Sanders doesn't win the nomination , then all his supporters will vote for the Trump in general election because both them are very anti- free trade.

The NY Daily News interview was an ambush from the start, as proven by them now endorsing Hillary. If you read the transcript, it turns out its the Daily News editors who've got their facts wrong again and again.

Take the exchange getting the most attention: Sanders’ supposed inability to describe exactly how he would break up the biggest banks. Sanders said that if the Treasury Department deemed it necessary to do so, the bank would go about unwinding itself as it best saw fit to get to a size that the administration considered no longer a systemic risk to the economy. Sanders said this could be done with new legislation, or through administrative authority under Dodd-Frank.

This is true, as economist Dean Baker, Peter Eavis at The New York Times, and HuffPost’s Zach Carter in a Twitter rant have all pointed out. It’s also the position of Clinton herself. “We now have power under the Dodd-Frank legislation to break up banks. And I’ve said I will use that power if they pose a systemic risk,” Clinton said at a February debate. No media outcry followed her assertion, because it was true.

As the interview went on, though, it began to appear that the Daily News editors didn’t understand the difference between the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve. Follow in the transcript how Sanders kept referring to the authority of the administration and the Treasury Department through Dodd-Frank, known as Wall Street reform, while the Daily News editors shifted to the Fed.

On drones, the Daily News asked: “President Obama has taken the authority for drone attacks away from the CIA and given it to the U.S. military. Some say that that has caused difficulties in zeroing in on terrorists, their ISIS leaders. Do you believe that he’s got the right policy there?”

“I don’t know the answer to that,” Sanders said.

A nice gotcha, except that while Obama did announce publicly that at some point in the future authority would move from the CIA to the U.S. military, that decision was quietly reversed — so quietly that the news apparently didn’t make it to New York (though HuffPost did report on it).

Correct, but he was found short of answers all the same, and as hatchet jobs go, it was effective. Here's to hoping he has a clear victory in the debate tomorrow.

Debate is less than an hour. Too bad I'll have class at that time :(

Does anyone know where I could catch a good recording?

Voter suppression in an American election ?! I am shocked...not. Seriously, in a democracy you shouldn't make voter participation so difficult. That being said, the Sanders campaign should've known the rules and done a better job of getting the word out or fought to change them.

http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ration-frustration-sanders-democratic-primary

New York’s strict voter registration rules sparked mounting frustration and anger among Bernie Sanders supporters on Tuesday as some discovered they were unable to vote in the primary election showdown with Hillary Clinton only after arriving at their local polling stations.

The issue has been attracting growing attention in recent weeks as the New York race appeared to become unexpectedly competitive months after the 9 October deadline to register as a Democrat had passed. (New voters were able to register and choose their party affiliation until 25 March.) But there were plenty of voters who remained unaware of the requirement until they tried in vain to find their name on the list of eligible voters on polling day.

By Tuesday afternoon, New York City comptroller Scott Stringer had ordered an audit of the operations of the city’s election board after it confirmed that more than 125,000 voters in Brooklyn had been removed from voter rolls
. In a letter addressed to Michael Ryan, director of the state Board of Elections, Stringer expressed “deep concern over widespread reports of poll site problems and irregularities” as voters cast their ballots at polling stations across the city.

“As a result of today’s reported irregularities, my office will be auditing the management and operations of the Board of Elections in order to identify failings and make recommendations to improve performance going forward,” Stringer wrote in the letter. “As I am sure you would agree, whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, all New Yorkers deserve an electoral system that is free, fair and efficient – not one riddled with chaos and confusion.”

New York mayor Bill de Blasio said the “numerous errors” in voter rolls in Brooklyn were evidence that major reforms were needed to the election board and state law.

Ted Cruz announces Carly Fiorina as his running mate.

Let's see how well this merger turns out...

it really is funny reading this thread and the other trump one to see amount of people who bought into the garbage liberal pollsters were putting out about trump's candidacy. nate silver got it so wrong it's not even funny.

Cruz and Sanders are finished. Just run the blummin' election between Clinton and Trump. And God help us all.

Trump still has the problem of having the highest unfavourable rating (57%) out of all the candidates. Second highest unfavourable ? Hillary Clinton (52%).

These ratings are record highs for any party frontrunner since 1984. The general will be a battle to see who America dislikes less.

TBH this is not an excuse.

one should be aware of all rules months prior to the vote and at the very least the respective campaigns should lobby for voter registration

even Trump's own children were caught cold and werent registered in time and hence were unable to vote for Trump in NY

If there are enough independents strictly opposed to both then they have the choice to coalesce behind an independent

New York rules are kinda weird though, you can't change party affiliation if you're an independent after October 9th.

So much has happened since then, the race has been closer than anticipated so for once the New York primary is relevant yet registered voters must make up their minds six months in advance ? In most elections around the world, many make their decision on polling day itself.

Well now the US elections will be who people hate more Clinton or Trump. Will the hate for Clinton bring out more Republicans and independents or the hate for Trump bring out more Democrats and independents. Left leaning voters do have a protest choice in the green party candidate because of that I am thinking Trump has an outside chance of winning.
Will be interesting to see who they pick for vp as that pick is now very important to bring out the people that were opposed to them in the primary.

apparently it's almost impossible to get ur name on the ballot without spending a lot of money and man hours. that's the reason u see so few independent presidential candidates in usa.

Yes I know it's practically impossible

I was replying to the poster who said that both are not liked at all and seemed to suggest that American voters are stuck between a rock and a hard place and would ideally want neither

But that's not true because if there are enough who don't like either a third party candidate can make a serious run. However here that's not the case and the electorate is fine with the candidates to not need to look for a third alternate
