Trump pauses some reciprocal Tariffs for 90 Days, Raises China Tariffs to 125% [Update@post270]

Had said this a few days back when this discussion started, that it was more about China than anyone. China is viewed as a national threat, a long term security threat and a global threat. Much more about tariffs. Here's a BBC link that seems to confirm this :

Also locally the US market needs a mild reset. Inflation was out of hand, commercial interest rates are ridiculous 10-12% , const costs are out of whack and honestly the low unemployment rate atleast in Texas needs a reality check. A mild recession kind of situation may not be bad honestly so that the market can return to baseline level.
I've been trying to gather all of the same arguments for tariffs to try and understand things better. Luckily Noah Smith's done the job for me combing through Twitter.

  • “Tariffs will get rid of trade deficits, which are bad for America”
  • “Tariffs are a negotiating tactic”
  • “Tariffs will reduce inflation”
  • “Tariffs will reduce interest rates, making it easier to finance the national debt”
  • “Tariffs are actually tax cuts”
  • “Tariffs will bring back American manufacturing”
  • “Tariffs will put the U.S. economy on a more sustainable footing”
  • “Tariffs will weaken China relative to the United States”
  • “Tariffs will make America more manly”
  • “Tariffs will force Americans to live more modest, austere lives

A lot of them are nonsense but I think you've picked 2-3 semi-sane ones out of those and there is definitely a small possibility that those goals will be achieved. For example, if you think that a mild recession will hit China hard and cool down the US economy, you may be right.

It's just that there are better and more precise economic tools for all these objectives. There isn't that much need for the US to hurt itself in order to hurt China. Better tools would be globally co-ordinated import bans on targeted products, manufacturing alliances with friendly countries like Mexico and India etc.

Instead Trump chose to fight the whole world at the same time - allies and enemies alike including countries like India that have been begging the Trump administration for months to tell them what it would take for a trade deal. Only to roll the ridiculously calculated tariffs back within a couple of days. It's impossible to find logic in all this.

India rejects an offer of BRICS countries to trade in New joint local currency, and tries to negotiate tariffs with the United States. :kp

India has wisely rejected the BRICS proposal to adopt a joint local currency, opting instead to pursue strategic tariff negotiations with the United States. This is a display of sharp foresight and economic realism—prioritizing long-term national interest over ideological posturing.

NEVER EVER TRUST ON ROUGH STATE CHINA .

:kp

BRICS was formed to province to world order.

It wasn’t formed to go to war against one country.

Bharat will do whatever is best for its people. Being the founding members of BRICS we will guide them in the right direction.

agree, trump is somewhat of an anglophile, i think the only choice the UK has of securing long term prosperity is greater economic integration with the USA. its tough because trump is so volatile, but if you can promise him a few pics with the king he might just be swayed lol. my long term hopes for the UK arent huge, but other than trying to suck up to the US, i dont see many other options.

Americans in general are anglophiles. They used to hate the Brits for a couple of hundred years or so, but since they established dominance and Brits accepted secondary status, things have changed a lot. They are watching British tv shows and adopting a lot of the British slang, same way as Brits adopted a lot of American slang through their tv and films.

People really need to explain how exactly US tariffs on China are supposed to fix the trade deficit, especially when the rest of the world isn’t following suit or matching those tariffs. As mentioned earlier, China can absorb a 15% drop in exports to the US.if global demand remains unaffected. So unless there’s a coordinated global effort, these tariffs are more symbolic than strategic.

Let’s not forget, the orange clown had to walk back his own tariff strategy after realizing it was backfiring. US Treasury prices dropped, markets reacted, and the genius move had to be quietly undone.

China won’t blink first. They have a point to prove and the economic resilience to withstand the pressure. The idea that people will suddenly flood the streets to protest Xi is more of a fantasy than a realistic political forecast. That kind of public unrest isn’t going to happen, at least not without global alignment against China, which isn’t the case.

It’s also time to accept that the U.S. is no longer an industrialized country in the traditional sense. It’s a post-industrial, developed economy with no appetite for low end manufacturing jobs. No one here wants to pick cotton or assemble a $10 iPhone that retails for $1000. The current global system, with developing nations producing goods for US brands, isn’t a flaw, it’s the foundation of modern economic growth and tech innovation. It’s how societies evolve.

This isn’t about nationalism anymore, it’s about business. Countries operate like corporations now. Growth comes from investment, not isolation. Just look at Hungary, their foreign minister recently pointed out that China has become a top investor with 17 billion Euro pouring into the automotive sector, all without political interference. Compare that to Pakistan, where China has invested billions while deliberately staying out of domestic politics.

So here’s the real truth, America’s two decades late to this race. Compete, innovate, or get comfortable playing catch up. Because trying to sabotage China instead of outpacing them is like blaming the scoreboard instead of training harder.

If your response to this comes from an “India will benefit” angle, don’t bother. And if your username includes “Texas,” spare us the emotional spin, this is about economic reality, not patriot points.

Most things Trump does are symbolic and gimmick-ish.

I don't think he has any long-term strategy. He is in it for the kick; he treats it like a reality TV show.

Once you slap 100pct traff then what's the point of increasing any further?

E.g if the cost of an iPhone goes from $1000 to $2000 then no body is going to buy it and manufactures are not going to export it so what exactly is the purpose for increasing the levy any further?

Can anyone explain this to me?

From an outsider, any increase over 100pct seems like the action a child would take in a primary school playground

China strikes back at Trump tariff hike, US stands its ground

U.S. says 75 countries want trade talks. Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan, others, push ahead with negotiations

BEIJING/WASHINGTON/LONDON, April 11 (Reuters) - Beijing increased its tariffs on U.S. imports to 125% on Friday, hitting back against President Donald Trump's decision to hike duties on Chinese goods and raising the stakes in a trade war that threatens to upend global supply chains.

U.S. markets churned as China's retaliation intensified global economic turmoil unleashed by Trump's tariffs. One U.S. survey of consumers showed inflation fears have mounted to their highest since 1981.

"Recession risk is much, much higher now than it was a couple weeks ago," said Adam Hetts, global head of multi-asset at Janus Henderson.
Foreign leaders have puzzled over how to respond to the biggest disruption to the world trade order in decades. Trump's administration has stuck to its guns, touting discussions on a number of trade deals it says will justify its dramatic upheaval in policy.

The ***-for-tat tariff increases by the U.S. and China stand to make goods trade between the world's two largest economies impossible, analysts say. That commerce was worth more than $650 billion in 2024.

"The president made it very clear: When the United States is punched, he will punch back harder," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Friday.

The dollar slid and a sell-off intensified in U.S. government bonds, the world's biggest bond market. Gold, a safe haven for investors in times of crisis, scaled a record high.

With the dollar weakening, selling of U.S. assets was perhaps most exemplified by the drop in prices of the U.S. 10-year Treasury note , long considered among the world's safest investments.

The decline drove its yield - which moves opposite to the price and is critical for determining things like interest rates on mortgages - up to a two-month high. On the week, its yield has climbed more than half a percentage point, the largest weekly increase in more than four decades.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is closely monitoring the bond market, Leavitt said.

A second day of data on U.S. inflation showed price pressures were not yet building broadly across the U.S. economy, although the Producer Price Index for March did show industrial metals prices rising due to import levies on things like steel and aluminum, in place for a month now.

At this point, all it takes is a “Make America Great Again” chant and Trump might tweet you a thank you right after ditching the tariffs he swore were genius.

We should send flowers to China for sending the biggest consumer products and services buyers in the world and makers of the best defense equipment in the world right at our doorsteps. We will just play with Trump’s ego, make him feel good and negotiate a great deal for ourselves amidst the storm to secure our economic rise in the next decades in this pivotal moment.

I don’t see a regime change in US for next 8 years either. Vance is next in line.

At this rate, even AOC could steamroll Vance.

Trump is holding an emergency meeting with @Devadwal. Expect a 175% tariff announcement by tomorrow. @Devadwal reached the US with 10 tiffins full of Pav Bhaji, just in case the negotiations get spicy. Stay tuned. :yk :inti

I don't think Devadwal understands the consequences of these tariffs. He supports/cheers for the sake of it. No fundamental understanding. :inti

These tariffs directly affect American people too. Their costs can rise significantly due to this tariff war.

India before 1991, had average Tariffs at 120%, so you are thinking of a complete end product.

Think of it in terms of:
Capital Goods- Used to produce capital.

Consumer Goods- Used by consumers , example the corrupt rich in India and Pakistan buying different goods from other countries for their consumption.

Now goods can also be categorised differently but think of it this way, what if Samsung Camera is so far ahead of what Huawei has, that only a tariff of something over 100% would work to make Hauwei good in China.. very basic example but along those lines.

Smart leaders care more for their people. So if it means stroking someone's ego to get a great deal for their countrymen so be it. And the reverse applies too. If Trump has to pamper someone to get good benefits for US Citizens that is fine as well. Posters herebust are jealous and so propping up China which is a rogue state with no democracy and no elected governments.

Such a Baniya mentality, we will always remain traders and dealers, nothing innovative or technological.
How so?? Ind can never be a manufacturing leader. So tgey have to work out whats best for them. And these would be defense purchases mostly I'm assuming. Recognizing the right time is an art. Reality is Ind is quite a bit behind China and has to deal with a rogue state at its doorstep aligned by a couple of other rogue nations. So Ind first is the policy and so be it.

It’s not just about manufacturing, we haven’t made a single programming language, one comes out every 5 years.

Our best company from IT is Postman, it’s just how we think, trade export etc.

Yeah just like Xi is holding an emergency meeting with you halbass and the pak posters.. :amir2

Folks tend to forget sometimes that Ind is still a developing country. Cant compare Ind to us and China. Ind just has to focus on as tge saying goes stay and get better in it's own swim lane

Looks like Charles gasparino was on the money on Fox News. ROW threatened to collapse the bond market and orange loon wet the bed.

Of course, it was all about China from the beginning. :inti
That's the point but China and delusional peoples are fall in the Trump trap :kp

You sound like sweepy and bhaag virus.

Make it a bit more intelligible and elaborate with details. The emoji does very little to help.

Do you have any points with data that you can put forth?

Hey, don't drag me into your chit chats if you can't handle the heat later or you will end up storming off again, grumbling and scratching like a grumpy cat just like last time. :rabada2 :inti

handle the heat? from you? LMAO. don't you get offended by phrases such as **** out of luck?
Yeah, from me. Doesn't take much to rattle a keyboard warrior like you, does it? Throwing around ghetto slang like it makes you a certified angrez. All bark, no bite. And when all else fails you start crying about the mods. You and that American cow cruiser act tough but fold faster than a paper.

@Devadwal posts emojis but your posts are full of asterisks. Who are you? A wannabe Canadian rapper?

And no one gets offended by words. You are in a forum. You will be knocked down in 2 seconds if try using this language in real. Chal nikal ab. :inti

Yup. that has really put the fear in me.

F'n Idiot. Go worship your Pappu doll.

Oh Bhai leave rpant alone even if temporarily. He has single handedly given trump supporter a spanking. You can go after him after trump fully reversed the tarrifs.

Guess you have reading comprehension issues.

arivu ketta kudhi
Hey Einstein, who dragged Pappu into the conversation anyway? The real genius here is you thinking forum rants make you some kind of alpha. Just because we don't stoop to your level and the mods are giving you a free pass, you think you are winning some imaginary battle. Like I said, your macho act only works on screen. Try this attitude offline, and you would be folded like a lawn chair in two seconds. But then again, you are probably a 60kg keyboard warrior trying too hard to sound tough. :yk :inti

Thats some real heat there. definitely put me in my place.

think I definitely hit a nerve their with the Aatish reference.

you claim to be indian and yet do nothing but carry the water for Pakistan here all day.

Guess Tavleen is not isolated case in India

Calm down there. I don't even know who Aatish is. Enlighten me, who is he, and how exactly does he explain you pretending to be a budget Canadian rapper in a forum? :rabada2

I am an Indian, you can cry all day long and abuse your paw paw. :inti

I didn’t mean to interfere in your glorious fight, but I’ve heard you use that term a few times. If he’s fighting on a keyboard, then what exactly are you using?

:murali
Good question. I am using a keyboard too. Same tool, different skill level. I am playing chess, he is drooling on the pieces. :genius

And you are not interfering, spectators are always welcome. :yk :inti

Thou does protest too much :inti
There are plenty of others who protest too, so what's so special about Tavleen and Aatish? Care to share some sources? I would like to know who they are and how they are relevant to me. Or are you just trying to sidestep this conversation by tossing out random names and pretending you have struck a nerve? Because, honestly, I have no clue who they are. Lol :yk :inti

Trump has given iPhones an exemption from tarrifs alongside other electronics.

Daily mail a right wing UK based newspaper has described it as a major win for China.
Nah. you don't know what you are talking about..China doesn't make any of those products.

@deltexas will be here real soon to explain it to you.

What does China intellectual property theft have to with exempting iPhones and computers from tariffs?

If anything, the biggest theft of intellectual property is in smartphones and computers and Pharma

@rpant_gabba clearly needs some mental assistance and support. Whatever he is experienced in his childhood, he seems to think everyone else has gone through the same. I can now understand why he uses ghetto language here. :sree :inti
