Said it right in front of a shell shocked Shoaib Akhtar yesterday in the studio who then said then who won all those matches against Bharat and kept a high W/L ratio against batch rivals to which Hafeez again said it was more of Imran Khan’s legacy than 90s team’s.
I am not sure if i totally agree with this but with this statement Hafeez has touched a sensitive topic which not many 2010s, 2020s era Pakistan cricketers go. It’s usually a one way traffic with the 90s era cricketers bashing everyone who came after them. I think last i heard someone talking a similar tone was probably Shahid Afridi during his captaincy days.
Mohammad Hafeez speaking during a TV show:
"Winning an ICC event creates an inspiration among the fans. I am a huge fan of players from 90s, but when it comes to leaving a legacy, they left nothing for Pakistan cricket. They won no ICC event and lost badly in 1996, 99 and 2003. There was a time when we could win a final but ended up losing badly. They were mega-superstars but they couldn't inspire people by winning the ICC events. Then, things gradually changed as we faced difficulties. In 2009, we won the ICC T20 World Cup, although we had lost the 2007 final. In 2009, under Younis Khan’s captaincy, we managed to win, which brought a wave of inspiration.”
“Unfortunately, Pakistan cricket faced a major bad incident, which led to a long exile of cricket from the country, and we still haven't fully recovered from it. Then came the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy win, which was a huge inspiration. Today, people idolize Babar Azam, and the reason is that even though his role in that event wasn't a major one, he was a part of it. The 2017 trophy had a massive impact on Pakistan cricket, and it brought cricket back to the country.”
“Winning ICC events is very important. Unfortunately, the players from the 90s, despite their incredible talent and superstar status, couldn't win such events."
In an online conversation, Rashid Latif stated that the blame lies with cricketers from the 1990s, though he did not mention any names:
“These guys are wreaking havoc. They keep praising each other now, but all throughout their lives, they fought. Just throw some money at them, and they are ready to do whatever.”
