Said it right in front of a shell shocked Shoaib Akhtar yesterday in the studio who then said then who won all those matches against Bharat and kept a high W/L ratio against batch rivals to which Hafeez again said it was more of Imran Khan’s legacy than 90s team’s. 😳

I am not sure if i totally agree with this but with this statement Hafeez has touched a sensitive topic which not many 2010s, 2020s era Pakistan cricketers go. It’s usually a one way traffic with the 90s era cricketers bashing everyone who came after them. I think last i heard someone talking a similar tone was probably Shahid Afridi during his captaincy days.

Mohammad Hafeez speaking during a TV show:

"Winning an ICC event creates an inspiration among the fans. I am a huge fan of players from 90s, but when it comes to leaving a legacy, they left nothing for Pakistan cricket. They won no ICC event and lost badly in 1996, 99 and 2003. There was a time when we could win a final but ended up losing badly. They were mega-superstars but they couldn't inspire people by winning the ICC events. Then, things gradually changed as we faced difficulties. In 2009, we won the ICC T20 World Cup, although we had lost the 2007 final. In 2009, under Younis Khan’s captaincy, we managed to win, which brought a wave of inspiration.”

“Unfortunately, Pakistan cricket faced a major bad incident, which led to a long exile of cricket from the country, and we still haven't fully recovered from it. Then came the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy win, which was a huge inspiration. Today, people idolize Babar Azam, and the reason is that even though his role in that event wasn't a major one, he was a part of it. The 2017 trophy had a massive impact on Pakistan cricket, and it brought cricket back to the country.”

“Winning ICC events is very important. Unfortunately, the players from the 90s, despite their incredible talent and superstar status, couldn't win such events."

In an online conversation, Rashid Latif stated that the blame lies with cricketers from the 1990s, though he did not mention any names:

“These guys are wreaking havoc. They keep praising each other now, but all throughout their lives, they fought. Just throw some money at them, and they are ready to do whatever.”

Does Hafeez even remember the type of cricketer he himself was? Shoaib Akhtar was a spoilt primadonna, but please ...... anyone who saw them both would know their respective worth.

I am bit disappointed with Shoaib Akhtar. He is all guns blazing generally but when his 90s fellows needed his firepower the most and him sitting right there in the studio, he had no counter to Hafeez. In a way that’s also the sad story of Shoaib’s cricketing career, maybe Hafeez have a point. Wasim wouldn’t have let this happen on his watch bro. Heck Yousuf would have taken him apart like he did Rambo back in the day lol. Moyo takes no prisoners bro.

I think maybe Shoaib wanted to avoid a repeat of the Dr Nauman episode in 2021. Getting into spats on live TV is not good for your broadcast career.

It is arguable that Hafeez's perspective is valid, given the documented history of 1990s Pakistani cricketers engaging in disruptive behaviors such as infighting and political rivalries, which negatively impacted the sport's development.

Did Sana Mir add her usual to the discussion as well?

Whether he says truth or not , they should discuss only about current cricket. It is like asking harsha "have you ever played cricket" during a cricket related discussion. It is unprofessional to drag each other through mud. Hafeez already had a spat with Vaughan if i am right. This guy can easily be triggered.

You have to hand it to Hafeez

“people remember Babar Azam for 2017 CT”🤡

Why no mention or credit to Sarfaraz in this monologue? Because Misbah said you can’t credit him as it’s against SNGPL and ICA policy?

90% of your cricket fans outside of Pakistan in UK and other countries where you have a strong fan base is because of the 90s players.

We fell in love with Pakistan cricket because of players like Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Inzimam ul Haq, Shahid Afridi, Waqar Younis, Abdul Razzaq. These guys were genuine superstars unlike your fake king and queen.

What’s Hafeez on about???

Reaction of Shoaib Akhtar when Hafeez made that statement... LOL

dWQW5aq.jpeg

Why should a player's worth be solely defined by trophies? The iconic 90s Pakistan players left a legacy far beyond that. This just feels like a cheap 'gotcha' moment with the simplistic view of 2>1.

Did Sana Mir add her usual to the discussion as well?

So it was Shoaib Malik who started this by saying let me add something on a ''lighter note'' and Hafeez took over. Later Sana Mir jokingly said bro was this light hearted? :D

Gloves off lol In the name of blaming Akhtar he has blamed Akram, waqar, Inzamam, Saeed Anwar, Saqlain, Mushtaq everyone from the 90s. This is like cricket forum fight now.

No kidding.
Shots fired by Hafeez.

I am waiting to hear response from Wasim, Yousuf, Razzaq type outspoken cricketers.
Shoaib let the 90s players down by letting Hafeez get away with such hard hitting statement as he sat there and listened it all like he was guilty. He doesn't realize Hafeez verbally violated him right there in front of desi cricketing community worldwide. He should have taken Hafeez on.

Hafeez being a total baddy these days. When did he become a gangsta in Pakistan cricket lol?

Shoaib so full of himself, comparing himself to Ronaldo...Siuuu 🤡
Couldn't agree more, he has a good heart but a total narcissist. The other day I was watching a video where he publicly humiliated Kamran Akmal on national television over his pronunciation of an English word—despite his own English being scratchy at best. He is as paindu as Kamran and Umar, only with better looks and talent.

Ronaldo is one of the most hardworking sportsperson in human history. He is also obsessed about his fitness. Akhtar was the opposite.

100% agreed. Ronaldo unlike Shoaib isn't involved in drugs and alcohol. He's a prime role model for any kid

Ronaldo generally gets a very bad rep, and deservingly so, is because of his larger than life ego. The guy's narcissism would put Imran Khan to shame. But no one can question his talent/ability and work ethic.

@Savak @Cpt. Rishwat @DeadlyVenom @Rana @Slim @Usman Chadda @IAJ @BouncerGuy @kingusama92 @KingKhanWC @FearlessRoar

Thoughts guys?
You think Hafee will be attacked for this?

I’m expecting a strong reply from many ex cricketers of the 90s
Hafeez is generally just a dumb dude who tries to be over clever. He has a weird way of getting his point across and is always full of angst.

90s players set the tone for our cricket. Those players are still respected across the globe. One small example - As much as we mock them - when a foreign country wants an insight from Pakistan they call in one of the 90s greats for a commentary or punditry stint, or just for their cricketing opinion.

You think any channel outside of Pakistan wants the services of Hafeez? Only Michael Vaughan engaged him on a podcast and that was for subtle trolling.

He needs to tone down his opinionated comments because he could actually speak some sense if he strips away the angst and hostility.

Bro Gilly can’t hide his sarcasm it was evident. My favorite cricket podcast by far. Them dudes just be having fun and pulling each others leg day in day out.

Someone had to say it it’s all about beating ind in world cups & winning test series in Aus & SA more than half of 90s team are convicted fixers. That in turn gave Salman Butt confidence to destroy pak cricket once & for all.

You said Gilchrist was told he has 3 matches to perform or he is out of the team.

Can you provide a source reaffirming your claim?

Not thing in Hafeez’s defense here is that these 2010s, 2020s era cricketers have had enough of bashing from the 90s. At some point someone was going to say this and it had to be Big Old Hafeez, who is still in his Vol3.0 mode.

Are you kidding?

He was arrested for sexually assaulting a women in 2005? Further allegations of sexual assault in 2009, then the country of spain literally charged him for tax evasion 😭😭.

The first 2 were never proven but the man had an entire government call him out lol.

Ronaldo is a role model in terms of fitness, hard work, dedication, and loyalty to his friend, since his best friend sacrificed his career for Ronaldo and when Ronaldo made it, he ensured that his friend would live in a mansion, get private jets and have a thriving lifestyle.

But he isn't exactly controversy free lol.

The most pure famous person who is virtually perfect from all ends is Keanue reeves once he got his John wick look attached to him.

That guy has a good body, good work ethic, and despite being super rich, just lives in a normal home, eats with the homeless and just walks like a casual in the street. No body guards, no fancy stuff etc.

Blame Akhtar and hafeez all you want but Ronaldo isn't a cinderlla story. Dude has an entire government hating on him.

They were pulling Hafeez leg too lol but he was so serious and agitated telling dumb stories about how he caught players sleeping during a test match.

We are lucky that we get to change the channel when he is on

This is the experience our poor players had when he was team director
Pakistan cricket team’s director Mohammed Hafeez is reportedly making a lot of players in the side “restless” and the major reason behind the simmering disquiet is his tendency to hold “long meetings and lectures”. According to media reports, some players, who were not named, are unhappy with the meetings held by Hafeez during the tour of Australia and now in New Zealand. “He holds very long meetings and gives long lectures and some of the players get restless because same things are repeated,” one media report said.

Contrary to popular belief, Dubai has never been a turning track. It offers something for everyone—providing some grip for spinners while also allowing early swing for bowlers who can exploit it. It's just a bit slower, but not excessively spin-friendly. Shami and Henry both took 5fers on this very pitch. Much better than pancakes where teams make 350+ for fun.

THREAD IS NOT ABOUT KEANU REAVES.. AND TROLLING ALSO... THANKS

In the 90s you only had one ICC event every 4 years so the importance of winning bilaterals and triangulars was high and prestigious.

Now that there's one every 1 or 2 years, winning an ICC event is the pinnacle to judge any player.

Would the 90s team choke in ICC events if they were as frequent then? Absolutely yes. So I agree with Hafeez that the dressing room shenanigans back then were also high.

Well saif Hafeez.
This shuts many up.

Its true, those wins were cause of Imran and the icc tournament was always the pinnacle of the game which is why Imran was determined to win that.

Rest of the guys did nothing and it was only than the team of 2000 came and won 2009 and than the 2010s team came and won the 2017 tournament which inspired the nation

Sports determines a players worth by winning the tournament and not some few games or series.

Not sure what Hafeez meant by no legacy. :inti

Pakistani cricket flourished in the 80's and 90's. Players from that period left a lasting legacy.

Exactly. The 90s cricketers couldnt do **** once Imran retired, infact people like Akram and Waqar ruined the team culture with their egos and attitude. Inzi was a product of 90s cricket and look what he did in ICC tournaments afterwards.

Atleast the later Pakistan team won 2 icc events

GUYS. YOU NEED TO WATCH YOUR POSTS.... WILL NOT WARN YOU AGAIN..

Give me some of that 1999 lime green Pakistan nostalgia

Some of the best memories of my life. Loved it all.

-Akram prime leader
-Akhtar thrilling run up
-Saqi bhai magic
-Razzler Jawaan fauji
-Afridi HBK
-Saeed Bhai engineering class
-Inzi bhai aura
-Youhana bhai minority empowerment
-Azhar bhai future dream
-Vicky bhai bench pe raub!

This is where your brand was globalised.

Lovely statement by Hafeez.

He has said it rightly, the 96, 99 and 2003 losses dint inspire anyone and he further said the infighting between the players iß all there.

No matter how much waqar and wasim act nice to each other now, their shenanigans have been well documented by alot of the youngsters of the 1999 team.

Win a match in England and all the bros in the stands would invade the pitch.

Honestly the peak era of Pakistan cricket

Those guys are just minting money sitting on channels to just talk smack. Glad that Hafeez showed them up

Nitpicking from Hafeez. While he gives Imran Khan credit for the 1992 World Cup victory, he fails to acknowledge the contributions of Wasim Akram and Inzamam. He mentions 2003 World Cup failure as well to further push his agenda. It's important to note that 2009 T20 World Cup semifinals and finals were won thanks to the performances of Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq, who were part of the era Hafeez was criticizing.

That whole era of 1998-2000 including the India tour was pivotal in PCB’s global outreach

You can’t explain it to these freshies bro

He gave credit to Babar Azam for 2017, not Sarfaraz

Do you think Akhtar was hardworking and focused on his fitness?
How else do you maintain a physical unit that produced 147Kmh+ throughout his career? When did Akhtar ever drop in pace? By that I mean become a medium pace bowler?

All the others, including the hosts, jumped in before he could add further comments and more details. The media is afraid of the 90's gen, the true lobby behind our cricket's downfall

He didnt gave credit to no one. He only mentioned that Babars fame rise started from the 2017 champions trophy

He said people remember Babar Azam because of 2017 CT.

No one remembers Babar because of 2017. They remember Fakhar, Amir, Hassan Ali and Sarfaraz.

Not just that, the 90's, post the 92 World Cup, were some of the most frustrating years.... with all the talent we had we should have been giving Lara's Windies and the great Aussies a run for their money...

yes we beat England in tests, but so did everyone else.... we had infighting, changing of captains starting with Miandad's ouster followed by the tussle between Waqar and Wasim...

It's almost criminal how a bunch of such talented players could have screwed it up so badly...

He meant Babars fame came from the 2017 CT. He got recognized in that event more.

No where did he said credit for CT goes to Babar.

While I am not aware to the specific details of any lobbying that may be in place, it is true that groupung within the team prevented it from reaching it's full potential during that era. Addressing these issues is imp to ensure that the current crop of players don't repeat the same mistakes. But it is also important to note that we cannot dismiss the achievements of that era completely as it will led to an endless debate.

He can mean what he wants to himself,

Babar’s fame has nothing to do with the CT17. He didn’t rise to the occasion like the others did. He’s not remembered for 2017. It was in the lead up to the 2019 World Cup where Babar gained prominence with consistent good scores as an ODI batter, and that innings against NZ at Birmingham which gave him global prominence to kick off.

They could have done better and looking back it is frustrating but you must admit that the good times and the high points were epic

People remember Ahmad Shahzad getting dropped for Fakhar in CT17 more than they remember Babar Azam….

What does that tell you?

He can mean what he wants to himself, it’s still a load of horse…

Babar was always touted be a super star even way before 2017. PP has threads going back to 2012 for him.

Here's a comment from yourself acknowledging this.

Pakistan are so lucky to have a batsman if his quality considering the days of Inzi, Anwar, Yousuf and Younis are gone.

I loved Babar too. I had high hopes from him. He destroyed it all with his allegiance to Rizwan and how things came out in the open about his agency, plus the Misbah agenda against Sarfaraz which Babar happily enforced.

Thanks for exposing him.

So he was on the babar bandwagon.

Damn right I was. My emotions for players are genuine. If I hate him now, there is a bloody good reason for it!

Just because you fantasize something, it doesnt make it a reality.

Atleast you admit that you hate him. So for you this is something personal and not logiçal

I think the Pakistan team after 1992 to about 2007 were never the absolute favourites had a lot of good players. But still underperformed. People expected better. Post 2008 Pakistan has had weaker players, entering most tournaments as 6th, 7th even 8th favourites at time. And yet have had multiple tournament wins, no.1 test ranking, no.1 rankings in ODIs and t20s. And without playing at home.

Yet I see more meltdowns in recent times when we don’t win stuff than before despite the fact we had better players.

I think it’s much better to build a long term strong side. But we seem desperate to scrap the odd tournament win, chopping and changing, bringing back players etc. It’s just insane pressure. And we’re always in the same position next tournament. I’d rather have a focus on long chances for players at settled positions. And actually allow us to firmly make up minds about players. Don’t let the odd tournament disrupt that testing and building a side. Every time there are short term changes, panic selections, fallout and then the cycle repeats for the next tournament.

The goal really is to try and become amongst the favourites so you have a goal of winning every tournament. Not just scrapping the odd one.

I know New Zealand haven’t won anything yet but they’re doing it right. Building up a side that is now considered one of the better sides. It’s been a slow and consistent process. Remember back in the day in 2010 or so they used to be weaker then us. I’m sure they’ll eventually win something which will lead to more. And at least the others like India, England, Australia etc you can reason with them having better cricketing structures, talent pools, money etc. What NZ has been able to develop which such a small cricketing population is really very impressive. Plus you see them try to take advantage of all the little things that are controllable like fitness and fielding. Not just trying to rely on pure talent. Which is really very admirable.

Thanks for exposing him.

So he was on the babar bandwagon.

Bro his only agenda is Rizwan. He will side with anyone that goes against Rizwan and will go against anyone that supports him, even his own opinions. Recent example is Aaqib Javed, he's only supporting him because he dropped Rizwan from T20s.

GUYS.... STOP MAKING PERSONAL REMARKS AND STAY ON TOPIC.... THREAD IS NOT ABOUT RIZWAN..

What legacy is Hafeez talking about, the legacy of Sharjeel Khan, Azam Khan or the legacy Asif Ali left by winning 2 crucial games, are these worth more than 90s cricket.

Akhtar ' one over to SA in Sharjah in Early 2000s, heavier than all the legacy of Hafeez clan
W W . . W .

They could have done better and looking back it is frustrating but you must admit that the good times and the high points were epic
Yes beating India was always fun.
But, and this ties up with what's happening currently, we have always had absolute numpties at the helm who never sorted out our glaring issues and we're now at a stage where youngsters don't even want to play first class cricket so instead of being a great but inconsistently good team we're now a consistently bad team

If the 90s cricketers didn’t leave a legacy, what kind of legacy did those that came after them leave?

Hafeez saying Babar got fame due to CT 17 is the biggest joke. lol what?!? No one remembers Babar from that tournament

Major bhai and Rana bhai represent the two ends (philosophies) of the same coin that is Pakistan cricket. To someone they may represent two extremes but to me they’re the same person.

He clarified that although Babar didn’t have a great impact on that triumph but the kids associate his name to the Trophy winning team. He made a hard hitting statement but said in the most polite manner
