I think ball tampering is terrible, and should be policed more. It is cheating. But the way cricket works it’s like an open secret, every team tampers with the ball at some point of their history, including the international ones. And because everyone does it you can’t exactly make one guy a massive example while turning a blind eye to the rest.
I think even trescothick for England mentioned using sweets to alter the ball. Yet people made such a big deal out of smith, Warner who used a foreign object to tamper too etc. Akhtar admitted he regularly tampered with the ball in his book and that everyone does it. And because everyone does ball tampering I think it’s accepted especially when the balance between bat and ball is heavily weighted towards the bat these days.
I think particularly with reverse swing, people are ball tampering even if it can’t be generated without. But there are guys desperate to make the ball reverse swing as soon as possible.
I don’t know why tampering is just accepted in cricket world like it’s nothing. It’s definitely wrong. But because it’s treated that way, I don’t think we can go overboard with fakhar (or Shaheen) like banning them for a year or something. They’re just the ones that happened to get caught.
