[VIDEOS/PICTURES] Mohammad Haris - International Performance Watch

Future T20I opener surely?

May get his chance on a regular basis after this T20 World Cup I reckon.

Hes got a long way to go Unfortunaltely pakistan has seen many that have burnt brightly initially then totally lost it

We have one in the squad haider and many other examples

Give him chancss but lets not hold our breath Hes not our saviour If he doesnt learn n improve his game he wont be anywhere to be seen in 12-18 months and will be another wasted talent

Outstanding prospect, give him all the confidence and allow him to open

Another match winning innings from him. Babar and Rizwan really screwed us over again, but he came to the rescue once again. He should be opening but as long as Babar is captain, that won’t happen.

6 sixes in 37 balls in international cricket

That’s 1 six every six balls! All against pace as well!

He is having the same impact Fakhar had in the 2017 CT. It is a trend with Pakistani players, they raise their game when they are thrusted into the team in a tournament. Maybe it is the surprise factor.

Unfortunately, almost no one is able to sustain the performances in the long-term. However, for now, Haris has earned his place in the team and he should be opening.

agree with this.

Which is why i laugh when fans say drop rizwan and babar. Both those two players are consisstent and here to stay.

Harris is batting marvelously, but having watched this team for the past 15 years, i know that a new batsman always come in our team with soo much glitz. THey end up slowing down after an year

For me it is not his runs or strike rate, it is the situations he has performed in. He is showing that clutch factor which Pakistani batsmen lack.

I wish if I had the crystal ball to see future of an individual. Or is it certain BUGHZ that helps fortune tellers?

Adding Wasim Jr to the team provided us so much balance.

Adding this guy has provided a whole bundle of positive intent and energy.

The other teams will already be thinking about dealing with Haris because of his impact even if for only 10 balls.

In T20, a leg side hack who can actually connect is more valuable than a technical player who plays too many dots.

Good thing is he didnt just go hammer and tong at every ball. Took calculated singles and doubles too

Breath of fresh air at the moment

Yes hes predominately legsided and will need to improve his off side play to have a future but for now its just what we need someone with an uncluttered mind coming in seeing ball and hitting ball

He'll make a lot to damage and probably go on to win the cup for his team before teams figure him out being a leg side hack and devise a plan against him.

An unknown and unpredictable hack is more dangerous than a technically correct blocker when you have no more than 120 balls to bat. :inti

Teams should eventually figure him out. But, he has been a good surprise package.

He reminds me of Shahid Afridi (in terms of intent).

Whoever is backing/selecting this tullaybaaz, arrogant hack should be sacked immediately. He shouldn't be anywhere near 2XI domestic squads let alone PCT.
Even Azam Khan is 100 times better than this hack.
Haseebullah hasn't debuted in First-class yet, even he seemed better in Pakistan Cup & was also a prolific scorer in age group cricket (U19 WC, Asia Cup).
On what basis is he Selected in PCT, 1 PSL hacked Fifty???
Is he a prolific Domestic Scorer? No.
Then, on what basis is he selected.
His attitude also seems iffy, with all his #BetheBest theatrics.
I guess, it is Ramiz who is backing him, after he scored that 50, when he said that he should be back.
He shouldn't be anywhere near the team for atleast 2-3 years.
His selection is as bad as Musa Selection for Aus tour.
People don not realise how good Rizwan is & how much there is a gap between him and next best WK.
He hasn't been been that good yet in ODIs, but I am pretty sure he will come good, as shown by his List A performances. But then, Teams aren't regularly playing ODIs these days, he needs few matches before WC23 for settling in ODI setup. People were also doubtful regarding him in t20s before he shut their mouths forever.

Come again pls

Yes he will be figured out.

The only way to avoid that is to continue to work on his game.

But for now, he is the surprise package for Pakistan.

At the moment he is like a new Imran Nazir, but not a leg side hack, as described by some "googled" expert, has all the shots and has a lot of time to play. He seems to be a hard working young man who I hope will work on his game and will improve his shot selection .

He needed a break and recognition like this and he got it and deserves it. Will be pick up in many other T20 leagues as wicketkeeper batter and will get more experience , great for him and for Pakistan .

Exactly. Just look at the lofted shot over cover in today's innings, no way a leg side hack like Ridwan.

Babar Azam in his post game speech to team:

"Whatever happens, we have to give our 100 per cent. We played as a team in the last two matches and we have to continue doing that. Harry [Mohammad Haris], you are playing outstandingly, but finishing the match [on a high note] will boost your confidence level. As our seniors told us, if you finish the game, you will play differently. Apart from these minor things, performance was outstanding"

I was under lots of stress when Babar and Riwan were busy in their tuk tuking , when Harry came, things changed for better.

Pakistan are gonna ruin him with that kinda of talk, dude was the MVP, pak needed 7 to win when he was out, with 6 wickets in hand, that is finishing the game, its this kinda out of date thinking that will fill his head with doubt, and goes someway to explaining why management think run a ball 50s are good innings.

i rarely ever say anything against captains, etc, during tournaments but this really got my goat.

Had to come in and yet again save Pakistan while the stat padders at the top were aiming for run a ball fifties. Nearly led to a repeat of the Zim match.

I read a story where IK dropped a batsman (maybe it was Mohsin Hasan Khan or someone I don't recall) who was obviously batting for his stats regardless of the team's needs. You need that kind of ruthless captains to win tournaments. Here captain himself is the biggest stat padder.

That kind of talk is rich coming from the captain who hasn't performed once in the whole tournament so far. Finish the game why? His whole style of playing is similar to Maxwell/Finn Allen/Shahid Afridi. Come and play as the aggressor, bring down the RRR. Put the pressure on the opposition, and he did that successfully twice in a row.

If the captain's gonna bring his own players down for playing a match-winning knock then how will anyone play at their best with full confidence?

That's the type of talk that ruins young brave batsmen which they already have done so with Haider. His job isn't to finish or play some sort of long 50-60 ball inning. His job is to get 20-30 quick runs. If he gets more and keeps scoring quickly, great but his role is to attack and attach hard. Don't change the approach to play long innings or try to "finish the game".

It's also asking a lot for a batsmen so young who hasn't even that much domestically. Just let him attack and do his thing.

So many people were writing off this kid too after a poor ODI series performance and the way he looked in the T20 match vs England but we've seen him play quite well in PSL and domestically so it is nice to see it translating it to International level. This type of approach will of course lead to some variable results but this is why its important to back players who have performed domestically & PSL because it will pay off. Extremely happy for the kid and he has been a breath of fresh air.

Back in the day you’d cal him a ‘walking wicket’… modern times they call him impact type of player…

Not really, such impact players worked in the past too.

A prominent example that I can think of right now is the SL WK Kaluwitharana. He would barely score more than 25-30 but he would score them quickly (for the time) at the top of the order and was the perfect partner for Jayasuriya.

Impact players are always valuable, but their value is subjective and it depends on the composition of the team as well. They are not for everyone.

Agreed.

It feels like a bit like 'senior junior' culture where Babar's ego means he must criticise the newbie to keep him in his place.

Sarfaraz was the worst in the world at this. Screaming at his players while barely being able to buy a run himself. At least Babar is not abusing anyone like Sarfaraz was.

He is an impact player. With the choices we have. He is is great. Limited ability , but so far he is effective.

Babar's "finish karna hai" talk has really angered me. Based on this alone, he should be sacked after this tournament regardless of the result. Why is it the job of the youngest player in the team to finish games for you? He should be playing at the top of the order and given a license to take risks and try to give us brisk starts. What has he got to do with finishing?

Babar is really getting on my nerves right now.

This is probably the worst msg that Babar could provide to Harris. Goes on to show that Babar is such a dud and would just say cliched stuff regardless of how much it makes sense.

The guy’s job is to up the ante and strike big, how can you ask him to also finish the match? What are you trying to tell him? It can be either one or the other. With every single word I hear from Babar’s mouth, I am left even more confused how this brainless guy is captaining Pak.

I had the exact same reaction as you when I saw that video. How clueless is this guy Babar, and how clueless are the yes men Saqlain, Yousuf, et all to let him spew nonsense every time.

Also how many finishers do we need? Iftikhar also considers himself a finisher. Nawaz is also supposed to be a finisher. Shadab as well? So what is it?

No set positions for Ifti, Harris (even though he already is the best fit for top 3), Shadab, Nawaz or Shan.

Sending Nawaz in to protect Harris from left arm spinners was joke of the day :)))

The guy who is woefully out of it mentally and is a bowling allrounder coming in to shield the guy that tore apart SA’s fabled attack of the tournament at 3, as if Haris is a tailender. Now I’ve seen it all. :)))

This isn’t like NZ series where we had no aggressive batsman and so were forced to promote Nawaz. With Haris in the team it’s counterproductive. Imagine Axar Patel promoted ahead of SKY.

Thick tank continues to surprise all of us, as long as we keep winning despite their tactics and not because of them, they will continue these circus clown tactics

Good player but I'm not sure about him being sent to open the batting against Boult and Southee. It might pay off and he may bat beautifully or he might fail and lose the good form that he is in.

Tough call to make but I don't see the team making such a drastic change. We will probably see Haris staying at #4 and Shan opening the batting with Rizwan.

Don’t think Baba is telling him to be a finisher he was telling him the equation was 3 of 17 don’t try to be a hero just finish game off !

Timid Misbah mindset

This is the reason why we are not playing like the best in the world.

Who cares if he may or may not fail?

Sure you want to rephrase this? You don't care if we win or not due to senseless batting from a player?

As previously mentioned in this very thread, Haris has the skills to play unorthodox shots in unconventional areas and is fearless. What he has showed in last two matches is that he can potentially play shots both sides of the wicket.

Kind of talent you stick with and groom. He is a quality keeper, safe fielder alongside being potentially and impact player with the bat. Inducted a season or so too early for my liking but has proved himself in last two T20I knocks where he provided the impetus to the team.

No I don’t want to rephrase that. I don’t care if a brave player who has the ability to turn the game on its head from any situation fails or not. Because he is my gamble, I as a captain am the one taking the big gamble on him to win me the match, or do something that will make the match easier for the rest of us who are incapable of handling the tough work.

It’s a major difference in mindset. Why are Australia playing Stoinis, Maxwell and David in their team?

Why are England playing Livingstone, Hales, Butler in their team?

Why are NZ banking on Phin Allen who offers nothing else besides batting?

If you want to be the best, you can’t worry about failing all the time. Pakistan always worry, ‘yeh na ho jaye woh na ho jaye’!

This is why I feel Pakistan would make three excellent changes to this side by replacing RizBab and Shan with Khushdil, Asif and Haider. Just let the three boys go out there and bat like there is no tomorrow! Honestly, who cares?

He is the only player in the squad who can play Sweep and the Ramp Shot.He also changed the match on its head in the last two games.

He should definitely open when there are only 2 fielders allowed outside the circle that's where he would be more useful or play as a floater and come in during the last powerplay any other position he would be another afridi type hit and miss player

People should just enjoy the ride and mot expect much

Im so happy for him, but worry that NZ will work him out and gove him nothing to hit the onside

His task will be to overcome that, and i hope he does because he is truly a breath of fresh air. Eager to see him in ODIs as well

Me too. We’ve been heartbroken many times when players like this break out, start like a tsunami and then turn into some saucepan steam.

My only concern right now is that I hope he’s not a Legside Larry. I haven’t watched all of his domestic highlights but the ones I’ve watched shows him targeting the leg side more often than not. And we’ve seen that too many times recently before player in question is found out.

He is definitely not a tullaybaaz. Reminds me a bit of 2016 pre fixing Sharjeel.

But I trust him for now, and he is young enough to overcome whatever weaknesses may be in his game. I just home he gets guidance from the right people, and not someone who completely revamps his style and technique and turns him into a d u d

Mohammad Haris in an interview:

"My game is such that I take the attack to every bowler,"

"I didn't look at the bowler, whether it was Rabada or Nortje or whoever else. I just backed myself and my own strengths."

"Everyone has their own role in the team and they have to fulfil that,"

"I'll be happy to play anywhere, really. I have confidence in my shots when I play through the air that I'll be able to clear the rope. It's great when you perform well and help the team out. Now it's about taking the momentum through. We have a lot of confidence. We came in winning the tri-series and that gives us confidence, too."

Matthe Hayden about Haris:

"I watched him closely over the last month and he was the one individual that came into every net session and faced all of our quicks. For me, that was like McGrath, Warne, Lee, and Gillespie. If you could face those bowlers and you were playing well then you knew you had a great chance of making runs in the actual game.

"Not even in the squad, and yet performing like he should have been there from the start. Great story."

"It's no surprise to see Harry come in and play so beautifully. He's got a very good technique on our fast, bouncy wickets and he's got a freshness. One of the things as an outsider coming into this tournament is pretty much the entire cricketing community with the amount of programme is fatigued to some degree. To have a young fresh face with nothing to lose, just to play with great freedom has been a wonderful expression for him personally but also for Team Pakistan."

He hasn't anything done yet significantly to called upon as a talent and reliable hitter. Final 2 games may become a turning point in Haris's career. But I m not convinced so far by his hitting, seems like another Asif to me.

Haider Ali ,Khushdil are not international standard player. Pakistan should find and invest on others.

These kinds of premature praise will kill Haris whatever potential he has. Pakistani players don't possess that quality to absorb praise positively.

IK did the same to likes of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Aaqib Javed, Inzimam and Mushi and many more. He encouraged them and made them believe there was no reason they couldn't be the best in the world and------------the rest is history.

Good to see Hayden encouraging Harry, no point in hold back the praise for a rookie.

Fail to understand the need by our players and fans to refer to Harris as Harry. This foolish colonial mentality is one of the reasons why we fail to progress as a nation.

If you want to give someone a nickname, there are plenty of options in Urdu. Would you ever see a Western player taking an Urdu nickname? Would a Mitchell Starc ever become a Mikail? Would a Harry ever become a Harris? Absolutely unneeded and displays our slave mentality.

I see him as a potential t20 star and turning into a very good LOI player. He has got confidence, eyes, and bat speed. Not all pakistanis are the same as you so eloquently described in another post.

He's going to need support when he doesn't score runs, because the way he plays means he will definitely get out early a few times just because of the risks he takes. I don't know if this is the same guy who came out trying to whack his first few balls and play ramp shots against England and got out after a few balls, I thought he was a bit headstrong then, but I do like how he hits shots. Unlike Fakhar he seems prepared to hit throught the line rather than drag from outside offstump to leg. Very exciting player, and a matchwinner for the long term hopefully.

May be, time will say. I have seen many Pak batsmen with short lifespan who were termed as potential star.

Ramiz Raja deserves full credit for Mohd Haris selection. According to news reporters the selectors and Babar Azam initially wanted to go for Sarfaraz Ahmed because of his experience but Ramiz stubbornly insisted that Pakistan back young blood and potential for the future ie Mohd Haris and Haris didn't have enough domestic performances to justify his selection.

Looked a bit scratchy today but still, solid attacking intent. Will be useful against the pacers in Melbourne

He prefers pace but is scratchy against spin.

First Pakistani T20I batsman who actually looks like a T20I batsman.

He shows how quick 20s/30s are more impactful in this format than perhaps grinding 50s.

In the domestic setup he’s apparently compared to Mohammad Yousuf so there’s more than the explosive cameos as well I guess, if given the chance to showcase it.

Will make a lot of our batsmen "insecure", which for many will be good for their own.

That four vs Ferguson was amazing. I doubt anyone else can play that shot in whole Pakistan

This must be a great learning curve, exposure and experience for him to get under his belt; still very young and early in his international career. So far so good. Just hope this isn’t a patch where he falls out like Haider did.

I really like his intent and approach to the game - he looks very confident and has self belief in his abilities.

I would argue his inclusion is a major part of the way the openers played today. He gave them a kick up the bum with his intent in the past few games.

Looks very weak against spin, but really strong against pace and the bouncer which is a huge positive.

Needs to work on his game against spin and he will be a force.

Needs to play 2 proper FC seasons to get that right and I hope he keeps his fearless attitude.

That shot through the covers, past midoff, was unreal. I didn't expect that from him, never in a million years. And that too, to a ball pitching at yorker length, on leg stump no less. Let's not forget it was Lockie bowling. One of the shots of the tournament!

I said he will need to learn how to play on the offside or he will be found out, and what a way to show that he indeed can. Still needs to keep working hard but he can be really good limited overs player.
