Virat Kohli - The Mega Discussion

Really these days I am tired too read so many posts that are not even true.
I mean guys, before posting things, if you can't remember things, you can check on Cricinfo if the informations are true.

None of the players you mentionned played even one test + the conditions were not easy for batting.

Here is the link where you can check scorecards in case you didn't know!
http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/series/423771.html

Well, I was responding to another member who was referring to an ODI series, and in the 2010/11 season at that.

he will learn when all the responsibility on his shoulder in test arena! he is young and new to test cricket and as time goes on he will learn art of test cricket!

@ Marshland
Well Shan posted this:
Umar Akmal average 35 while playing 12 out of 16 of his tests in NZ, Aus and England. This Kohli is must overrated batsman ever, average of 35 on dead tracks.
So he was talking test cricket.
Shakil quoted him and posted these stats. These are also test cricket stats:
UA averages 63 against NZ, Kohli averages 100+ (granted it was in India but Kohli has not played any match in NZ)

UA averages 33 in Australia, Kohli averages 37.5 in Australia.

So a little early to disparage Kohli for Umar Akmal

MRSN then quoted shakeel and posted the following comment, so he was also talking about Test cricket as he was commenting the stats of test cricket.
don't think Kohli would have lasted too long against that NZ attack in those conditions UA scored so many runs in..

And you came up with that quoting MRSN....
We were playing a slightly weakened attack at times - Hamish Bennett was being given a go in preparation for the World Cup, then you had the Kyle Mills and I think even Oram and Styris covered a few overs, alongside Franklin.

Anybody would have plundered a lot of runs against them.

Well, I was responding to another member who was referring to an ODI series, and in the 2010/11 season at that.

Do you even know, that the year Umar Akmal played Test in NZ there was no ODI's, and the ODI's you are talking about are on the next tour, one year later. And on the second tour, Umar Akmal was not in the starting XI in Tests...

Sorry mate but you are completely lost....

So too proove your point, you talk about matches not from the same format, not from the same year...

that's not a proof. that's half statement.

Any individual with hald decent IQ that watched the matches will know it, and I checked it on Criciinfo too. If you don't eblieve me and you didn't watch the matches you can go on an check.

But it's quite obvious:
1st test: 1st ininnigs: Pujara was not out,
2nd Test: 1st innings: Pujara was the 9th wicket to fall.
2nd innings: Ghambi was the last to went out.
3rd test: well the test just finished, so you should remember!

And Except 1st test, i don't think that defeats my point.

Some situations needs to consider here.

He comes at 5. More often than not, except 1st test, after sehwag goes, there's a collapse. He is coming after tendu. And as he starts to play his strokes freely after the cautious start, by that time, tendu goes out.

Kohli goes into shell because he feels he needs to steady the ship.

Then comes uv. After some flashing boundaries, he goes out. Kohli sucked into shell again.

When dhoni comes out, kohli knows he won't stay longer. So he goes deeper into the shell to preserve his wicket. (in the mean time, dhoni goes out).

Then comes ashwin. Perhaps this is the time in which, he is comfortable. But by that time, the tail already started, opposition smelt the victory.... And psychologically, he isn't yet strong to do what laxman used to do.

And Except 1st test, i don't think that defeats my point.

Well here is your point:
He was suffering from the other end!
But that's not true, as he was always the first one to go expect this one last innings in the 3rd test match.

Part in bold: Never happenned and you make it as it is happenning every innings or second innings.
Tendulkar was in patnership was Kholi just once, and Kholi was out.

Kholi never played shots too as you mentionned...

Same for all the rest, in a total of 6 innings it happenned just once, and it was the last innings. You have a short memory mate.

I am not continuing with you on this subject as I see you can't even accept fact.

Kholi played like a legend, as did Tendulkar, it was all due to Pujara if they couldn't make more runs, if that can mak you happy.

@Mobashir - Apologies, might have twisted some memories there!

Apologiy accepted!

It is interesting to debate on things, but when the fact aren't correct, then it is just blablabla for hours...

Just like our friend Itachi is doing...

:kohli has always been terrible against good teams except Sri Lanka. Good to see this joker is getting exposed on home dead tracks as well.....

England's bowling attack is pretty much the only one to not have recently failed in at least one country. Even South Africa, who overall have a better unit than us, struggled to take wickets in UAE. Meanwhile whether England have been winning, or losing such as in UAE and Sri Lanka, their bowlers have been exceptional.

lol. Looks like people have already forgotten the massacre at the Oval.

@Topic- Kohli is just going through a bad run of form, he's a talented player and I'm backing him to perform in Nagpur. Was way overhyped by some Indian fans though, which is why his poor run is put into the spotlight.

I dont think his off side game is as bad as its made out to be. He's had a bad series after a while and has faced some quality bowling. Plus his responsibility has gone up now that India have lost 2 big legendary stalwards with a third on the way to retirement soon. His honeymoon period is coming to an end.

is this another Akmal better than Kohli thread?? :D

Just based on observation technique and temperament, and not stats, I think Kohli is much much better....

People confuse ODI performances with Tests! Two different formats, different skills required. He has yet to show us how that he's a top player in this format. He's really talented no doubt but it's yet to be seen.

I believe he will come back stronger from this, He is the kind of person with the attitude to learn from his mistakes and looking at him you know that he hates under-performing, i think he will work harder now and improve. Hes a young player in terms of test and he will become better with time

Don't worry, Wahab the Jacket Riaz will be the perfect tonic for Kohli's recent struggles!

This 'next Tendulkar' looks like he wants to overtake his hero's loss world record. :in

Don't worry..he'll be there with the team for the next few years and will have lots of opportunities... He is not going anywhere.here to stay

No I mean people discounting him after 3 tests...I mean he's got 1 more test in the series before people can rule him a failure etc.

But then I believe these jolts were necessary for him to get back to earth... The guy fell to hype and came crashing down... Hope he realizes and tones himself :)

No he didn't come crashing down, he is yet to find his mojo in Tests. He's been an ok player so far in tests.

Ive been saying for a while now that he is not a good test prospect. His off side game is flawed. Pujara on the other hand is the real deal. Rohit does have test match potential as well.

Finally countered the bowling plans and risen to the challenge. Well done.

A very hardworking cricketer. Whatever problems he may have, none of them are due to laziness in preparation of his game.

Good insight, in fact one of the specific points which separates him from Umar Akmal. Including the superior talent and temperament and intelligence and etc as well. Lols.

Leg side player, lacks strokes in the square of off side, England only bowling to him on the off stump with covers packed. How will he score ?
He has been planned out.

Good analysis. He looks so ugly while playing on the offside, it's no surprise that he is so uncertain about deliveries in the corridor.

I think he played most of his shots on off side today :razzaq
In ODIs too he has played brilliantly on off side till now.
If a player goes through a bad patch please don't come up with a foolish conclusion.

Gotta say England bowled really well in this series to him and planned well.
Kohli was always chained up for runs but today he refused to get killed. Playing 300 balls in itself is a good thing though for a player like him.

but but but Umer Akmal is talunted.

Good patient innings....

Kohli :14:

but dont worry...in few people 's excel books two years down the lane... this century will not count coz it was in subcontinent and it will put under flat track hundreds

if you look, most of them were through the drives(covers).
square of the off side is not his stronghold.

It was a good innings but I wouldn't jump in and say 'the next best thing in cricket' stuff, also will not write him off when he doesn't score!

I like how thread was there till he was not playing well for complete series..and then got merged into Kohli thread after today's innings ... :D

Did something similar against us last summer, struggled but kept working and got on top of the bowlers at the end.

Virat Kohil Golden year is over since he has turn 24

Epic Failures :))

Kohli has game, ie. grit/ will/ discipline. That is at least as important as the fact that he's talented. At this level, everyone's talented. But very few have game.

This guy 'll lead IND for long, long, long.....long time. Outstanding player, no doubt, my most favorite contemporary batsman. I do believe, in 15 years time he 'll be the closest to reach 100 Century record by his more illustrious countryman (but not even slightly close in terms of selfishness). Virat Kohli 'll fight it to the last ball - be it with bat, by fielding or even bowling. & he has a great attitude - a great competitor who doesn't pretend to be a good boy to maintain his public image; he 'll take the battle on & off the field. I believe, even with ball in hand, he 'll be a great partnership breaker simply through his sheer passion & competitiveness. I am bit old fashioned & feel myself to be lucky that I started watching Cricket in those "dark days" without those Match Referees.

This guy loves to bat - by saying bat, I mean he loves to stay at the wicket. He loves to middle everything - scoring runs is secondary to him. Sounds funny, but that's Virat Kohli - put value to your wicket & stay at the wicket. As he has every shot in the book, if he stays at the wicket, he 'll score & score quickly.

A perfect example of Virat's greatest strength was in display at Nagpur today. A natural aggressive player, put his best efforts to stay & resist throwing it out - he came in flying colors. Questions were raised for his approach towards the longer version & today Virat proved that he has the technic, attitude & mentality to challenge his weakness. That's most important - winning against your weakness.

Great knock young man; as said I am a bit old fashioned (much older than my age) & loved each & every ball today he blocked with dead bat. Not everyday you see a batsman fighting it out with bowlers & himself - Virat came out winning in flying colors.

Hope this stops any further comparison with Umar Akmal. These two are different breed - talent, attitude & intelligence don't come together in one package.

Well he is yet to be fully tested under test match pressure conditions abroad. But what today's innings showed is that he has the patience to grind it out for himself and his team. That is a good thing - test match temperament is something so rare in today's youngsters (esp. Indian youngsters). So Kohlis innings today is a right step in that direction.

Surely if we find more such youngsters, India can aspire to be a good test team in the next two years. Until then we need to be patient with these youngsters and give them time to commit mistakes and learn from it.

yea this knock should finish all that compaison with that joker Umer Akmal who is not fit to polish Virat's batting shoes.

This innings will help him to grow in stature. The best batting talent to come out of India after Sachin.

One decent innings on a flat dead track and people are again comparing this joker with :umarakmal who made his mark on difficult away pitches.

Laughable stock to look back n see that "Kohli vs Umer Akmal" thread that went for what? 50 odd pages?

Epic Failures :))

what in my post did I say wrong? Did I say he would be a failure in tests? No! Did I say he would never score? No! Did I say he's not talented? No! He hasn't set the world on fire yet in Tests! Everything I said was absolutely correct He has talent but he has to prove himself in tests just like he did in this innings.

How can someone even think of comparing V.Kohli with U.Akmal ?

V.Kohli is light years ahead in terms of Technique & Mentality.

Brilliant knock by Kohli under immense pressure. Showed a lot of fight and discipline.

He somewhat got tagged as an ODI specialist which was and is hard for him to overcome.

People are forgetting the fact that it took him around 2 years to hit his stride in ODIs, and he made his test debut mid 2011.

He is a world class player who'll be ranked alongside Ponting, Tendulkar, Lara, Kallis.

People are quick to downplay talent with the same notions every generation, conveniently forgetting the fact that every generation will produce world class players who will be better than the ones in the previous generations or will at least be as good.

It is too early

Let him do it for a few years

He is overhyped

A lot of players start well and don't jump the gun
and such bla bla

He is a superstar and it has been obvious for a good year now.

And please, he is miles ahead of Umar in everything, don't insult and disrespect him by comparing him to Kohli.

The excuse of Umar having to play at no 5,6 won't last long.

Failure is not when you fall down, it is when we stop trying. This guy is so hard working, wonderful attitude.

I hope he will lead IND in a years time :)

Kohli is too young to captain atm

that said, hes a wonderful player n could do well.its a big risk but worth taking

he may not be a youngster but that's still quite young to be a captain

anyway he seems a little too temperamental to be the captain to me

Same was said about Ponting.

You need a captain who has a bit of an x factor and can lift the team up with his aggressive attitude and not put them to sleep :misbah

He has already had success as captain at U19 level.

Kohli will lead the team Ponting led well:))

hes still finding his feet.captaining India is a very tough job.his own batting may suffer

ponting if i'm not mistaken was 27 when he became the ODI captain and 29 when he became the test captain so a bit more mature

also ponting was in his prime by that time while kohli i imagine is yet to get there

i'm not saying he will fail as the captain...right now could be a little too soon though

Ashwin is a better test batsman than Umar Akmal....leave alone Kohli

Ashwin is better compared these days to Sehwag.Gambhir, tend,Yuvraj and Kholi, and he seems to be a better batsman than them.
As a spinner , he is worse than a part timer like Hafeez!

so one good knock after 3 test failures?:D anyway congrats but still he didn't live up to the hype in this series.

Typical inning worthy of an Indian batting great....no onus for pushing for a win....

A quintessential selfish slow and safe innings on a slow flat deck in familiar conditions, and only with possibility of losing his spot facing him straight in the face....
