What's new

West Indies [289 & 415/6d] beat England [77 & 246] by 381 runs in the first Test, lead series 1-0

England in some deep deep trouble here.. 61/8 and a defeceit of 228 runs means England are almost out of this test match unless West Indies batting collapses in their 2nd innings..

This is Barbados & this is Kensington Oval :) I was surprised to learn that at 264-8, people were putting it as ENG's day!!!!

Even if they can, WIN should never enforce follow-on, rather make ENG chase on 4th innings. WIN made a little mistake by not picking a genuine spinner, but I can understand their logic - against 6 lefti, Bishu probably won't have been that effective, Chase can trouble Poms in last innings. Net, net WIN will need 300 for 4th innings, and I hope they are not blown away for <100 2nd time.

Time to see what Sam Curran is made of... :vk

He is going to throw kitchen sink at every ball and getting away. Not many bowlers are trying bouncers at him. He is weak when the ball is slanted across and when bounced.

You clearly haven't seen Sam Curran bat.

Very good bowling attack this for Windies.

Some decent pace and variety.

Well, they aren’t are they?

But this shows that Broad should have played, probably Wood too to exploit the back-of-a-length variable bounce. Pitch-up swingers like Curran aren’t right for this surface.

He's in for batting. As an Indian I can tell you he can win match from here :yk

This Joseph looks good. Very nice easy flowing action. Ball just kisses off the surface and flies through. Will be handy in England.

Brilliant from Windies .

Looks like a duke ball they are using . I would enforce follow on while bowlers are in good form

Yeah, asumming the follow-on is an option, it would make sense to make Anderson and Stokes bowl again on no rest.

Bilal7 actually said England are the best test team in the world. topspin Hitman:)))

Spot on, it's better to make England bat last. WI will be nervous if they have to chase anything over 100 on this pitch.

They are stupid to leave Broad out for few extra runs from Curran. He would have been handy here. Ball is just seaming around all over.

When you pick 1 & 1/2 bowlers & rest on their batting utility this is what you get . Stokes is a genuine 5th bowling option - Rashid , Curran , Moeen :)

England deserve this for not picking specialist bowlers. Broad would have done better than Curran and I think Leech would have done better than Moen and Rashid as he would have at least been able to keep it tight. Specialists doing the job for WI. Bowlers have bowled well , Hetmyer and Hope scored.

West Indies well ahead here.

Roach top speed 136 kph. This guy bowls at 130 to 135k . It is jus that impeccable length and movement that is causing world of trouble for the pommies. They neither go forward nor backward. Just stuck.
Majority of wickets falls to 135-140k.

Curran is a sitting duck against bouncers. India had the excuse of not having prior knowledge. But other teams should start bouncing him out.

They were chest thumping about their "depth" lol we saw the "depth" today

Problem with this Windies attack is they are hot and cold on times.... But when they are on song they are treat to watch...

Side NO is on back foot, and the shoe just needs to touch the line. But, here SG is safe.

Anyday I’ll pick specialists over all rounders who don’t make the team on batting or bowling merit. Moen doesn’t make the team on batting or bowling merit, same with Rashid. Leech can keep things tight even if he isn’t picking up wickets. Also Broad is capable of running through a side, Curran is still young and his batting won’t make up for running through a side.

Awful selection by England.

MMHS people were making fun of BD including BD fans when we got destroyed for 50 runs in WI.

At least we didnt get blown away in our home conditions.

Windies performance today proves that the England's test series victory over India is sooooo fake

yes "Neither nor team" . Bit of batting, bit of bowling bit of fielding give them a false sense of security.

Watching a bit of this match, I think we dodged a bullet when we won the series against West Indies because if these kind of pitches were prepared when we visited, we wouldn't have won the series let alone a single test match

:yk2

They won 5 tosses in a row. Also India's awful selection like not playing pujara , Bhuvi getting injured. India should have won 3-2 on another time. Curran saved them in 2 tests from that happening.

This WI team wouldve won the ODI series in India too if it was a 3 match, but Ind knew that 3 match series against WI is always going to be risky.

This is a fantastic bowling unit. I like the leadership of Holder. He definitely can be modern day Lloyd for them.

England have been dismissed for 77 in their first innings on Day 2, in reply to West Indies 289; Tea has been taken with England trailing by 212 runs; For the WI, an outstanding display of fast-bowling by Kemar Roach to take 5/17!

Guys - this thread for WIvENG only - other discussions elsewhere.

Great stuff from the Windies.

This is why Pakistan's series victory couple of years back cannot be disregarded.

This is humiliation for England. Lost a Test at home and now on the brink of a horrific defeat.

First I missed Boult demolishing England last time they toured there.

Now I didn't tune in for this carnage.. :(

Wowow what a performance by the Windies I was expecting England to win this series comfortably. But oh boy are The Windies showing fight!

Had some cheap totals in WI lately.

PAK 81 all out (2017)
BAN 43 all out (2018)
ENG 77 all out (2019)

Due to a combination of an improving WI attack and spicier home pitches instead of the spin friendly Caribbean dustbowls of recent years.

This West indian attack will give tough time to any team. Thanks God pak won the series here in 2017.

How insecure England team is about their batting? Stokes - all rounder, Ali - all rounder, Rashid, Andu and curran - all rounder.

With hindsight I think the side should have been:

Jennings
Burns
Bairstow
Root
Buttler
Stokes
Foakes
Moeen
Broad
Wood
Anderson

England should stop filling up team with batsmen jsut for the sack of depth. One all rounder is more than enough. Stokes is doing that. Then they should go for 4 best bowling option.

The pitch quickened up after first two sessions on day 1. A bit like Joburg pitch

Normally, grass covered wicket with a little moisture always quickens on day two. Once the sun takes out the moisture from top surface, it gets compact and if the base is solid (Barbados is), it bounces & carries better. Not the worst for batting, if batsman is good on back-foot, but genuine quicks will fly on Day 2 more than Day 1. These type of wickets actually takes toss out of equation - a little more moisture, and we were blown away for 43; but that doesn't mean it's always a bowl first wicket; batsmen need to plan innings by session and negotiate tough hours.

Poor review - that beautiful shape will never hit sticks against a lefti (or it has to strike pad out side line); almost unplayable for right handers, but Jimmy has to pitch it further up to get LBW.

Anderson will be in business for atleast 20 overs. They have to see him off. Ball is doing a lot for him.

MMHS WI have all the ingredients to be a good test team.just need a good spinner and with more experience i am sure their bats will come good.
