West Indies [318 & 200/6] beat England [204 & 313] by 4 wickets in the first Test at Southampton

International cricket is set to resume after a break of nearly four months, and the players on either side are eager to put on a performance befitting of the occasion.

Overview

England v West Indies, 1st Test
Ageas Bowl, Southampton
Wednesday, 8 July; 11:00am local, 10:00am GMT

The first Test between England and West Indies is a truly special occasion as it marks the resumption of international cricket after a break of nearly four months. The last recognised game of international cricket was an ODI between Australia and New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground before the rapid spread of COVID-19 put a pause on all major sporting activities around the world. That match was played behind closed doors as a precaution against the spread of the virus – a measure that is set to remain in place for forthcoming international matches.

While the greater significance of the match will not be lost on players, they have insisted that their drive for success will not be diminished. In fact, the prolonged break is likely to spur the players on to try and excel.

Led by Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel, West Indies have a sharp pace attack well capable of running through the world's best batting line-ups, especially if offered support from conditions. With some cloud cover expected over the next few days, the fast men will relish the prospect of bowling with the Dukes ball.

England's batsmen showed promising signs on their victorious tour of South Africa late last year. In the absence of Joe Root, the likes of Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley will be especially keen to build on that promise, if given the chance. Stand-in captain Ben Stokes will be keen to make an impact with the bat too. The bowling attack looks very well-rounded on the pace front. The swing prowess of James Anderson, expertise in seam movement of Stuart Broad and unsettling pace of the likes of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood could pose big troubles for the visiting batsmen.

Remember the last time

When the sides last met in a Test match, England won by a handsome margin of 232 runs but not before West Indies had won the series by handing England a couple of humbling defeats in the first two games of the rubber. Roach was especially lethal during that series, picking up 18 wickets at an average of 13.88. With the bat, Jason Holder finished as the top run-getter with 229 runs against his name, 202 of which came in an unbeaten innings at Barbados. The other men to score hundreds during that series were Shane Dowrich, Roston Chase and Root.

What they said

Ben Stokes, England stand-in captain: Everybody is ready and raring to go. You've got to look at it as we're walking out on the field to represent the country. When you've got the three lions on your chest, nothing makes you more proud. I know there's not going to be anybody in the crowd to hear or get that energy from, but we know we've got hundreds of thousands of people watching us from around England who want us to do well.

Jason Holder, West Indies captain: We did well in the last series against Afghanistan. We've won against England and we've done well on the back of top-order really. You go back to the series against England, Shane (Dowrich) got a century, Roston Chase, I got runs probably in the lower half, there were still very significant contributions from the top order.

Conditions

There is plenty of cloud cover to be expected through the course of the Test with the threat of intermittent showers. The overcast conditions promises to make for a spicy contest, given the quality of bowlers on either side. But spinners can be expected to become increasingly important as the game progresses. In the last Test played here, Moeen Ali's off-spin fetched England nine wickets in a winning effort against India.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed interim changes to its playing regulations, which include the ban on the use of saliva to shine the ball and allowing home umpires in international series.

The ICC Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) ratified recommendations from the Anil Kumble-led Cricket Committee, aimed at mitigating the risks posed by the COVID-19 virus and protect the safety of players and match officials when cricket resumes.

COVID-19 Replacements: Teams will be allowed to replace players displaying symptoms of COVID-19 during a Test match. In line with concussion replacements, the Match Referee will approve the nearest like-for-like replacement.

However, the regulation for COVID-19 replacements will not be applicable in ODIs and T20Is.

Ban on applying saliva to the ball: Players will not be permitted to use saliva to shine the ball. If a player does apply saliva to the ball, the umpires will manage the situation with some leniency during an initial period of adjustment for the players, but subsequent instances will result in the team receiving a warning.

A team can be issued up to two warnings per innings but repeated use of saliva on the ball will result in a 5-run penalty to the batting side. Whenever saliva is applied to the ball, the umpires will be instructed to clean the ball before play recommences.

Non-neutral umpires: The requirement to appoint neutral match officials will be temporarily removed from the playing conditions for all international formats owing to the current logistical challenges with international travel. The ICC will be able to appoint locally based match officials from the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Officials and the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Officials.

Additional DRS reviews: The CEC has also confirmed an additional unsuccessful DRS review for each team in each innings of a match, keeping in mind that there may be less experienced umpires on duty at times. This will increase the number of unsuccessful appeals per innings for each team to three for Tests and two for the white-ball formats.

The ICC Cricket Operations team will support Match Referees when processing Code of Conduct breaches, and a neutral Elite Panel match referee will conduct any hearing remotely via video link.

An earlier media release on the recommendations of the Cricket Committee and details on appointment of match officials is available here.

Additional logo allowed: Meanwhile, the CEC has also approved a relaxation of rules on apparel logos for the next 12 months.

A logo, not exceeding 32 square inches in size, may be placed on the chest of the Test match shirt and sweater in addition to the three other logos allowed as per regulations. As of now, logos on chests are only allowed in ODIs and T20Is.

Both nervous and excited at the same time for a match not involving Pakistan. This is a breakthrough game. The winner doesn't matter as much as having a good, healthy, competent game. All my best wishes to both the England and West Indies teams.

International record at the Ageas Bowl

England → Matches: 26 | Won: 16 | Lost: 9
West Indies → Matches: 7 | Won: 2 | Lost: 3

England haven't lost any of their three Test matches at the venue!

Two excellent bowling lineups and two slightly dodgy batting units should make for an entertaining series.

Cannot wait to hear the comforting sounds of bat on ball once again after so long.

Long overdue when you consider that football has been back on for three weeks with zero social distancing and people can get absolutely drunk in a pub....

Very impassioned and emotional pieces to camera from Michael Holding and Ebony Rainford-Brent. Nasser nearly in tears too.

Toss has been delayed due to a damp outfield which's a fitting start to the English summer, yet the weather was scorching during the lockdown.

Delayed toss due to wet outfield!

Welcome back to cricket in England :D

So much for July. Should have played in May when the sun shone every day.

Given the frailty of both batting lineups, 5 days is probably not needed to ensure a result.

Cricket has already started, wait is a part of it. :misbah3

On a side note I hope we get some action involving bat and bowl soon as well as thats also part of cricket.

has hardly been raining for the last three hours, if at all. just pathetic

Toss at 1.30pm, with start of play at 2pm.

gonna be hilarious when it does actually start raining at 2pm

Broad with super human abilities. :babar

Wont really matter too much as root was going to score 60-70 if he was playing

I’d be happy with that from him.

But he might also have got 200 which none of the top four are likely to.

Anyway I am looking forward to the new Wood-Archer pace age.

bit of a long tail for eng....bess, wood, jimgrump & jofra .....something for windies to exploit? wish rakheem cornwall was playing...he's a sight..:)

Bess bats some and Wood can smash twenties.

England and West Indies players all took a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement before the first Test in Southampton.

Match officials also took part, while both sets of players are carrying a logo on their shirts.

Speaking on Tuesday, stand-in England captain Ben Stokes said: "We have a massive opportunity to do something really powerful as an England team.

"We are doing that by showing support towards the West Indies."

There have been protests around the world since the death of American George Floyd in May.

Floyd, a 46-year-old unarmed black man, died after his neck was knelt on by a police officer for nearly nine minutes while he was being restrained.

Premier League players have knelt at the beginning of every match since English football's top flight resumed following the coronavirus lockdown.

Some drivers took a knee at last weekend's Formula 1 Grand Prix in Austria.

In Southampton, the players and officials knelt for 30 seconds, and there was also a flag carrying the crest of West Indies and the Black Lives Matter logo hung in the tourists' dressing room.

Asked before the match whether any show of support for Black Lives Matter would be repeated throughout the three-Test series, Stokes said talks between England and West Indies were ongoing.

As they practised on Wednesday morning, England players wore training shirts that carried the names of key workers who have served through the coronavirus pandemic.

The people named on the shirts were nominated by their local cricket clubs and included teachers, doctors, nurses and carers.

"We're only able to play this Test match because of the amazing job that key workers up and down the country have done to help us through this pandemic," said Stokes.

"Wearing their names is a real honour for us, and is a small sign of our appreciation for the incredible work they have done."

Don't think they have done that yet :))

ENG 1/1 (3.0) CRR: 0.33

Day 1: Play stopped due to rain

Play restarted - England need to rebuild now - anything above 250+ will be a challenge for WI

Cricket in England provides some great games but that happens when there is actually some cricket. Had some disappointments related to weather throughout the WC last year and now resumption of cricket in which we cant get 5 straight overs. :dw

Rain will be on and off for today and tomorrow I think.

Good segment by sky regarding the resumption of cricket in Pakistan. Hopefully we will soon see Eng, SA etc coming back to Pakistan.

The one documentary for which Atherton was in Pakistan during PSL?

No thats a different one. This one was a small one, from the time of MCC team tour (Just before PSL) and had interviews with Wasim Khan, Ehsan Mani, MCC team members including Kumar Sangakarra, Ravi Bopara, Ajmal Shehzad etc. Basically highlighted what happened in 2009 and now how the cricket in Pakistan has been reviving and how important it is to do so. Covered bit of events which MCC cricket team attended and how good the crowd was.

Sangakarra also mentioned how important it is for Eng, SA, Aus and NZ to tour as well and same was the stance of another one from MCC top management.

Day 1: 2nd Session - England opt to bat

This pitch is dry. It will break up on day 5.

I would have picked two spinners.

Lol plenty of seam/swing on offer . Easily the hardest place to bat-England.

Until days four and five. Then it will be sunny, and there will be no orthodox swing or seam. Jimmy might reverse it though.

Yes but the Rose Bowl then becomes a good place for spinners and they will get some sharp turn. Weather permitting, this should be an easy win for England .

I have a feeling Burns will score a hundred rest all will fail.

Burns and denly aren't the best batsmen in the world, but they consistently face min. 100 deliveries each even in tough seaming conditions like this.

Wonder if shan masood and azhar ali can do the same. Doubt azhar will survive more than 10 deliveries

Day 1: Tea - England opt to bat

ENG 35/1 (17.4) CRR: 1.98

Denly 14* (48)
Burns 20* (55)

Burns has all the makings of a classic test opener for the next decade.

I can’t comment on his longevity but I expect him to reach the level of Cook/ Graeme Smith.

His debut was overdue by 4 years. Would have been the top opener in the world by now.

He is good but he won't reach cook or graeme smith.

weather today in hampshire was iffy
but it was NOT 17 overs in a day iffy
what a lame welcome back to cricket

Perhaps but I wish we had more than just Bess. Even Root isn’t there to twirl a few.

Unless leach was unfit, he should have played ahead of bess here . This windies lineup is all right handers and there are no left arm seamers to create a rough for him!

I think the problem with denly is that he plays his whole innings at the same tempo. He should accelarate or may be try to be a bit more aggresive once he faces more than 70 balls. I usually see him getting out for about 30 off 95

Not much more that could be done. It was raining on and off all morning and by the time it permanently stopped for a good period of time they had a toss and were back on without 45 mins. Then we had the short break again due to rain and now this break due to a combination of bad light and what looks to be the heaviest rain of the day.

Good pace in the pitch, variable bounce, bit of seam movement and quite a lot of swing . Windies have planned poorly here. Not enough short stuff from around the wicket to burns and not enough fullish deliveries to Denly. Australia would have had them 3 down already in such conditions.

Rain ruling the roost at the moment.
