West Indies [318 & 200/6] beat England [204 & 313] by 4 wickets in the first Test at Southampton

WIN still has a fair bit of batting left - these two, Blackwood, Holder, Dorwich. This Chase guy is real threat here; for a batsman averaging ~30, he has five hundreds in 58 innings, means the day he stands, plays long. 65 overs left today - a lead of 125+ and 10-12 overs to Pom openers this evening, WIN should settle for that.

Always felt Chase is a clutch player. Has been dismissed for 10 or under in 21 of those 58 innings, nervous starter for sure.

This Test, thanks to CV-19 has proved one thing that Imran introduced 35 years back: In a game like cricket with so many areas of marginal calls; there should NEVER be any umpire from one of the two participating countries, not even the fourth one.

Archer hasnt been getting much movement. Naturally doesnt swing the ball much, relies mainly on seam movement. He is getting nothing here so will have to deceive the batsman either by varying lengths or pace.

Getting some movement now

Getting some movement now

Couple of slower balls (The knuckle balls) and a bouncer over the head of the keeper in the last over. I guess he realizes too that he isnt getting much. Never been a big mover of the ball, even if we see his world up wickets they were mainly from slight seam movement (Which can be great if one has accuracy like Archer), pace variation and length variations.

Archer gets the most seam movement of all English bowler when he is bowling at full pace like he did in the Ashes. Trouble is, he can't sustain it .

He doesn't rely on swing

He has the ability to get enough seam movement to take wickets. You dont need a lot just enough to get the outside edge or miss the inside edge to hit the pad or the stumps. I agree he has been struggling to sustain it since NZ test tour.

This pitch is not offering as much of the wicket, couple of really good wickets from Gabriel when the ball moved in after pitching were cross seam deliveries (Denly one was 100% not sure about the Sibley one).

Shaheen Shah started mainly with seam movement but now he has worked hard and gets banana inswing going on occasions. Archer needs to work on getting some swing as well which can be beneficial in certain conditions like these.

He doesn't rely on swing

True that is what I have said. He relies mainly on seam movement if there is something on offer in the pitch otherwise he tries to use his pace and length variations.

Day 3 - Session 2: WI lead by 8 runs

212/5 (71.0) CRR: 2.98

Chase 18* (84)
Dowrich 20* (25)

Min Ov. Remaining: 47.0

Mark Wood falls after delivery almost every other over.

After Tea, England will get the second new ball - if WI can survive that one with not more than seven down by 100th over, they’ll win this Test. There is not enough time left for England to recover from 100+ deficit and then post a total to knock 10 wickets .... it’s like a four day Test now.

Dom Bess needs to bowl quicker on this pitch. It is how brother moeen destroyed us twice .

Day 3 - Tea: WI lead by 31 runs

WI 235/5 (80.0) CRR: 2.93

Chase 27* (115)
Dowrich 30* (48)

Min. Overs Remaining: 38.0

If west indies get lead of 100 they will go on and win the tests

Windies really in control after these 2 sessions today. Chase-Dowrich partnership looking very solid, but new ball due now and will surely be taken immediately. England need Anderson to do something with it and quick

All about WI coping against the second new ball now. A lead of 100 will put them in the driver's seat.

West Indies now have a great chance of winning the Test. But, they need a lead of 150 runs minimum.

WI need to get this partnership going , any lead of 75 plus will make it tough for England. But 100 - 120 runs lead would put WI in strong position.

Archer's slowed right down in this first spell since Tea. Not sure if that's deliberate to maximise swing or if he's still feeling stiff.

Does anyone have the pace statistics of the match so far? Especially for the England bowlers?

Windies need to put their head down and aim for a 150 lead.

With these two going good and Holder still to come, they can pretty much bury England by lunch tomorrow.

England is missing Root not only his batting but his captaincy as well.

Root would have used part timers this time or he himself would have bowled.

Chase needs to get a hundred here, Poms will struggle to make WIN bat again thereafter. I think, this track is going to crack further with more uneven bounce and double pace - add to that gloomy sky, not looking good for Stoke’s first Test as Captain.

A lead of 150 and then a couple of early England wickets and who knows.

Good stuff this from Windies.

Anderson has been the only saving grace for Eng front line pace attack in this innings.

ENG 204
WI 276/6 (93.0) CRR: 2.97
Day 3: 3rd Session - West Indies lead by 72 runs

England in fine position as long as lead doesn't go past 100.

England just need one big partnership. If England set a target of 220-250, they can win.

Good ball from wood, nice to see middle stump out of the ground.

Stokes shows why he is the best all rounder, he is a crucial batsman and a game changer with the bowl. Of course, shouldn't take anything away from holder

Stokes is leading from the front.
Highest runs scorer in 1st innings and now highest wicket taker for his team as well in 2nd inning.

ENG 204
WI 318-all out (102.0) CRR: 3.12
Day 3: Innings Break - West Indies lead by 114 runs

Eng may score 300 to give a target of 200 which will be comfortably chased by windies if the pitch dries more on day 4 and 5

114 runs lead , Poms have done well here , to make sure they are still in the game , if they bat well here

Eng may score 300 to give a target of 200 which will be comfortably chased by windies if the pitch dries more on day 4 and 5

I don't think WIN will be able to chase 200 in 4th innings, 4th innings chase is always tricky for teams like WIN, Pa, SL.

That 30 runs last wicket partnership is going to be most crucial here. Poms can win this with a score around 320 in this innings.

Gabriel already on target. Bowling full and getting the ball to move.

Chances of getting 320 is very low for England although with Stokes on their side, anything can happen.

Yes Stokes can do anything. They also have Pope and Burns, both of these players are very good players, they are very crucial.

Excellent spell of bowling. Burns and Sibley have done well to survive, they know when to leave the ball

If rain stays away, England should win this. Batting last on this pitch should be difficult.
