New Zealand won a close first Test but were blown away by Yasir Shah in the second thereby setting up a potentially thrilling series finale.

Overview

Pakistan v New Zealand
3rd Test
Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi
Monday, 3 December, 10am local time, 6am GMT

Yasir had a quiet time of it by his standards in the Test series against Australia, picking up eight wickets in two matches.

But the team wanted more from the man with 87 wickets from 14 Tests in the United Arab Emirates before the start of the series against New Zealand, and he has delivered in spades.

In the first, as his team lost by four runs, Yasir picked up eight scalps, and then he had 14 strikes in the second game as Pakistan won by an innings and 16 runs, taking his tally up to 109 from 16 in the UAE.

Now, he needs just five more wickets to take his career tally up to 200, and most followers will back him to achieve the feat in Abu Dhabi, in his 33rd Test.

If he does, it will go some way in putting Pakistan in a position of advantage against a team that has shown great commitment and fight in the series so far.

The first Test wasn’t even a real see-saw affair. New Zealand scored just 153 in their first innings and eventually set Pakistan 176 to win. Easy, people thought, especially when Pakistan reached 130/3 with Azhar Ali and Haris Sohail in the middle, and Asad Shafiq, Babar Azam and Sarfraz Ahmed to follow.

But debutant Ajaz Patel decided to change the script and did it so well that Pakistan stopped four runs short. In the second Test too, while Yasir’s eight-for shut New Zealand out for just 90 in the first hit, they battled to 312 in the second – an impressive effort despite the end result.

Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls have been in excellent form, Ross Taylor, Tom Latham and BJ Waling have all scored at least one half-century, and the bowlers impressed in the first Test. So there is a fair bit of firepower in that squad and a lot of spunk.

That’s something for Pakistan to worry about, but they have their form players as well, not just Yasir. Azam, Sohail and Ali have looked good, and Hasan Ali has been among the wickets too.

Pakistan might miss Mohammad Abbas for this game, but with the talent in their ranks – both Mir Hamza and Shaheen Shah Afridi are around to fill in if needed – they should be reasonably confident.

Key players

Yasir Shah (Pakistan): When in the UAE, Yasir is a different beast. He was in complete control of his craft in Dubai, even drawing comparisons with Shane Warne. When he gets going, Yasir is usually difficult to stop, and Pakistan will expect him to continue on his roll.

Henry Nicholls (New Zealand): With Jeet Raval and Latham at the top, and Williamson and Taylor next in, Nicholls might have been expected to play a lesser role than he has. But he has stood out with half-centuries in the second innings in both Tests, 55 in Abu Dhabi and 77 in Dubai. He’d want to get to three-digits next, and looking at his form, it could well happen.

Conditions

Not terribly hot but nicely sunny, the weather in Abu Dhabi is as good as it can be for Test cricket. There are runs to be scored, especially on the first three days, but spinners will back themselves to have a big say.

Squads

Pakistan: Sarfraz Ahmed (c & wk), Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali, Babar Azam, Bilal Asif, Faheem Ashraf, Haris Sohail, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Hafeez, Saad Ali, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Yasir Shah

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (c), Tom Blundell, Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Ajaz Patel, Jeet Raval, Ish Sodhi, William Somerville, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling (wk)

Would have liked to play an extra seamer. Faheem instead of Bilal who has done nothing.

Wish to watch a bit of decider, but our good buddy PCB has arranged the 3rd Test with perfect timing - 1 AM, Monday morning start :(

Freaking Hafeez, we just can't get rid of this guy. I've never hated a cricketer more.

Unless we loose 3-0 there will not be any major change in the team. As long as Inzi there players like Hafeez, Shafiq and Imam will not go anywhere.

I think if he doesn't perform in this match, he will be dropped or replaced by another batsman for the SA tour.

Do you have an idea when Izi willl get rid of Imam, Hafeez, Bilal and Shafiq?

Then he will be back in next UAE series. No faith on Inzi unfortunately.

We did for a while. But our youngsters just did not do enough to keep this buzzkill out for much longer.

Advantage NZ. You expect Pakistan to mess up a target of 50 when they bat last.

Bilal Asif playing

I wonder why did you expect a change - didn't read my pre-Test post of 3rd Test XI? I know Ul Haq more than most here and, Arthur is proving exactly why no one recalls him for his 5+ years in SAF's success and why he was sacked by CA....... not to say much about Sarfraz here, as he himself is leading from the front on team's shoulders.

Bilal actually makes more sense than MoHa & Faheem, therefore can't blame this selection, but the hypocrite guy picked identical 15 for 3rd Test, with 1.5 spinners in it; therefore no other option than Bilal, hope he does well here, bowling first, ball might grip a bit on Day 1.

This is not your typical Abu Dhabi wicket...expect a bit of swing with the new ball

Kiwis are quite ruthless in team selection - finger spinner is the key in UAE, unless you have a Yasir and they dropped Sodhi, which I think is correct call.

Pakistan bowlers have to be right on money from first ball here , no looseness

Any report on the wicket - I know it's the same wicket used for AUS & 1st Test of this Series, but haven't seen pitch report.

Its will be as usual , it will help spinners as the game progress. I think batting will be really tough from 4th day lunch on wards.

Pakistan should have played another specialist spinner here along with yasir .

I think the theory about "Finger spinners are more effective in UAE " is proving to be flat invalid. If you're good enough, then you'll end up picking heaps of wickets irrespective of whether you are a finger or a wrist spinner. Yasir Shah is prime example of that. And coming to New Zealand's selection, they've also dropped a work horse like Wagner for Tim Southee. That's ruthless as well.

What do you make of the pitch & what is a par score in first 2 innings on it ?

I doubt if you know about what you are writing - at least could have checked few data. Yasir isn't a conventional leggi, otherwise his bowling average in AUS won't match Bradman's batting average. Kiwi's have dropped Wagner, because with 5 bowlers they don't need a work horse; rather they need 3 new ball pacers to take care of first 23-25 overs ...after watching PAK's opening pair.

Looks good for batting so far. No substantial swing or seam . And I don't think it will turn much on first two days. So a great chance for New Zealand to win this ☺🙂

Going by Kiwi's batting tempo, I believe they are expecting this track to crumble lot before than predicted.

Kiwi's will not win this . Do you think draw will be on cards sometime during day 2 or 3 ?

Yasir isn't a conventional leg spinner???? :((
Alright, tell me WHO currently is a conventional leg spinner and how?

Stay tuned in PP for few more months, you'll get it. Now, I am watching a intriguing Series decider.

Shaheen bowling well but is a bit impatient. Goes for the very full delivery every over and gives away runs. He doesn't really need to, just needs to Aik for the top of the off stump. Batsmen are unsure whether to go forward or back because of his height.

His seam position hasn't been great though but the wobbly seam has caused some problems

The only English U19 debutante is probably Brian Close.

Yes, he has a tendency to try a bit too much. Perhaps test cricket will build up some patience. Gets a wicket as I write this.

That is because lack of expereince. Only thing I'm worried about is the leak of runs.

And he gets a WICKET! xD

Good review, but my point is if such LBW calls need review, then what's the job of field umpire?

How was that decision not given out? It was plumb.

First of many to come hopefully for Shaheen!

Hassan has been on the money as well for the past couple of overs

Hassan needs to get a wicket here with new ball. Pakistan need some more wickets before Yasir can come in.

Pak will have a big fight on their hands today the pitch and ground looks good to bat on the first day. Ravel has been batting confidently throughout the series it maybe his day today. Also expect big ones from Williamson. And Taylor, unless Yasir weaves more magic.

I believe we are in trouble here If NZ can get 350+ then there is only one winner on an Abu Dhabi track which crumbles faster then Dubai track.

Bilal is one useless selection you are practically playing with just 3 main bowlers with one of them on debut

Losing the toss effectively reduces our chance of winning by 50%.. only if we won this toss!!

Even 250-300 should be enough to trouble Pak

Yasir gets 2 off 2.

A very unlucky dismissal for Taylor though. The ball kept really low

Bilal will always struggle here. It's clear he relies more on bounce, rather than turn or accuracy.

Ofcourse we won't have much criticism of NZ playing at a RR of 2.7 here. If Pakistan starts doing it, watch all the analysts come out in full force :hasan

Yasir looks more threatening against left handed over the wicket plus looks like he have taken confidence from last test and showing some variations googly top spinner

We have lots of so called Pak fans with limited understanding of test cricket. Anyway first session to Pak despite llosing the toss.

Wow Yasir once again ripped through NZ before lunch. Will be surprised if NZ get above 200 here.

Where are those cricket fans who suggested that Yasir Shah is finished and time to introduce Shadab into Tests.

Tuning in now. 4 wickets after being inserted into the field on Day 1 is a good start.

How is the pitch behaving ?

Just catching up. Seems like a decent start.

Shart turn on offer for Yasir. Looks like drier and more abrasive than usual dubai surfaces
