What's new

Arsenal FC | 2022/23 Season

So disappointed. We played so well for large parts of the game but lacked killer instinct. We are so technically and tactically brilliant to keep possession, play around the press and progress the ball to the final 3rd, but always in these big games our attackers lose their bottle to put the ball in the net. Then, stupid naive defending gives them 3 chances and 3 goals.

Improved performance, but same result again away to the big 6. Gutted.

Agree with this.

At times it was as if we were trying to walk the ball into the net.

We need improve our record against the big 6. Last season we won 3 and lost 7 - leaving much to be desired. Out of those 3 wins, we only won 1 of those away from home.

naive defending. Gabriel and Ramsdale have been at fault for over half the goals we have conceded this season. our midfield without the ball is poor. The fact the club ignore trying to improve midfield until last day of TW shows how naive and incompetent they are.

Next away game is brentford lets see if we have Actually improved or not this season.

I am not bothered about the lack of Pepe replacement. People are confused about the signing of Vieira but he is not there to compete with Odegaard and ESR - he is there to provide cover on the wings.

The plan is to utilize him the way City utilizes Bernardo. Arteta, like Pep, would rather have a slow but intelligent player on the wings who can keep possession rather than an explosive player who will lose the ball more often than not.

The major criticism that I have over the recruitment this summer is that Arteta/Edu have yet again failed to sign a deep lying a playmaker - a proper number 6.

Someone who can dictate the tempo and recycle possession. It is key to the type of football that Arteta wants to play and it inexplainable how this position continues to be neglected.

Liverpool wasted no time in getting Arthur to cover for Thiago because Klopp knows his midfield will not work without a proper pivot. He was there for the taking all summer but Arsenal failed to act before Liverpool.

There is plenty of talent in the market in this position and I hope it is the biggest priority for next summer. If Arsenal make the top four (which they absolutely should), I really hope they inquire about de Jong who would be perfect for Arsenal.

You cannot succeed at possession based football when your midfield options are Xhaka, Partey, Elneny and Lokonga. These players cannot hold onto the ball and they are going to get murdered on the counter which was one of the main reasons why I had no expectations from the United game. Our midfield is not press-resistant.

Zinchenko has the intelligence and technical ability to play this role but Tierney is made of glass so that is not going to work out either.

Arsenal fans panicking after one loss lol

Its not panic after 1 loss, this was 1st test of the season and same frailties of last season were exposed. Most fans can see that midfield is weak and squad has holes in it which were exposed yesterday and will continue to happen across the season.

Be a bit more optimistic you grumpy sod :)) They will finish in the top 3 unless they bottle it

Arsenal began their Europa League campaign with a 2-1 away victory over Zurich.

Arsenal took the lead through debutant Marquinhos converting from Eddie Nketiah's cutback after 16 minutes.

But Zurich equalised before half-time courtesy of Mirlind Kryeziu's penalty after Nketiah fouled Ola Selnaes.

Nketiah restored Arsenal's lead in the second half, heading in at the far post from Marquinho's cross. Mikel Arteta's side face PSV Eindhoven in their second Europa League game next Thursday.

Thierry Henry has claimed that reported Arsenal target Leroy Sane can be one of “the best in Europe” but the winger needs “killer instinct”.

Sane previously had a spell in England with Manchester City. He joined them from Schalke for a fee that could have risen to £46.5m with add-ons.

The Germany international was a key player for three seasons between 2016 and 2019. He was involved in 20 goals in 31 league outings in 2018/19.

England need a shot in the arm and Ivan Toney could be just the drug

For many Germany-born players, the pinacle for them is playing for Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga giants were consistently linked with him prior to him suffering a serious injury to his ACL in 2019.

After recovering from this setback, Sane joined Bayern Munich before the 2020/21 campaign for a potential total fee of £51m.

Sane was in and out of the team last term and Arsenal were interested in signing him during the summer.

The player’s contract does not expire until 2025 and he impressed on Tuesday night as Bayern Munich beat Barcelona 2-0 in the Champions League group stages.

He scored his side’s second goal as they picked up their second victory in Group C.

Henry praised Sane after this win, claiming that the winger is capable of “being up there with the best in Europe”:

“If he starts to score goals, which makes a difference right, if you see and talk about the chances Bayern Munich had in those games, a lot of the times it was Sane, but he didn’t finish it,” Henry told CBS Sports.

Arsenal are contemplating a move for Portuguese free agent Xeka, with the former Lille midfielder, 27, having been offered to the Gunners and other Premier League clubs

Mikel Arteta says Ivan Toney's career "is a great story" as he prepares his side to come up against the latest addition to Gareth Southgate's England squad.

Toney was called up on Thursday for the forthcoming Nations League fixtures against Italy and Germany after five goals and two assists in his opening six games.

"I cannot think of stories like this that have been so successful in Spain," said Arteta, of Toney's sojourn through the divisions with Northampton and Peterborough after being sold by Newcastle.

"It's about showing consistency, quality and belief and that it can happen at any age. It shows that opportunities are open for everybody."

Toney's trajectory has been echoed by Brentford, whose rise through the divisions to becoming a Premier League force has been just as impressive.

"The clarity and vision of the club and how they have executed it deserves a lot of credit," said Arteta.

"Thomas and his staff have done an incredible job and they are constantly evolving.

"We are very aware of how difficult it will be to beat them."

Team news - Ajer returns; Odegaard out for Arsenal
Brentford v Arsenal (12:00 BST)

Despite defeating Leeds 5-2 last time out, Thomas Frank makes two changes to his Brentford team.

Norway centre-back Kristoffer Ajer makes his first appearance of the season, while Josh Da Silva returns to the side.

Shandon Baptiste drops to the bench and Keane Lewis-Potter is not involved.

Captain Martin Odegaard is missing for Arsenal as Thomas Partey returns to the side after injury and there is a first Premier League start for Fabio Vieira - the midfielder signed from Porto in a £34.2m deal in the summer.

Scotland defender Kieran Tierney also returns as Oleksandr Zinchenko is injured and Albert Sambi Lokonga drops to the bench.

2-0 so far..

Goal from Saliba and Jesus excellent controlled performance.

One of Arsenal’s best halves of the season so far. They have made Brentford (who are widely agreed upon to be a solid PL outfit) look like a pub team.

Having Partey back in midfield makes such difference. control in possession and no gaps in front of defence when we dont have the ball. well done so far. This is why we cant afford to have him out injured.

Amazing goal from The New Vieira.

This is a proper hammering now.

3-0 this is how we should be doing in tough away games.

Well done to the young lad.

Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka tells Sky Sports: "We have a different mentality this season. we kept going and are training like we play and have class with the players that can make a difference.

"You have the class in the front and they make the difference. More than happy we are in a good way but a long way to go."

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus: "From the start we showed what we want to do in the game, create chances and score. That is what I believe we did.

"He found me for the goal and I am so happy to play with him, he is an intelligent and quality player."

"The celebration was for my guy Vinicius Jnr, it needs to stop and it was for him."

Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri became the youngest ever Premier League player at 15 years and 181 days as the Gunners defeated Brentford to return to the top of the table.

Mikel Arteta sent on the schoolboy midfielder in the closing moments with his side leading 3-0.

Arsenal's travelling fans greeted Nwaneri's appearance by singing: "He's going to school in the morning."

William Saliba set Arsenal on their way to a sixth win in seven top-flight games this season after the France defender climbed high to head Bukayo Saka's corner in off the post.

It was 2-0 inside the opening half an hour as Brazil forward Jesus, a £45m signing from Manchester City in July, headed Granit Xhaka's measured chip past David Raya.

Portuguese midfielder Fabio Vieira capped a dominant Arsenal display by marking his first Premier League start since joining from Porto with a goal from 25 yards.

Brentford were unbeaten in their previous three games and could have climbed to fifth in the table with a win, but they rarely threatened as forward Ivan Toney, who has been called up by England for the first time, struggled for service.

Arsenal had started the weekend top of the table but dropped to third after Manchester City and Tottenham won on Saturday.

This win, however, put the Gunners on 18 points, one more than their nearest rivals before their next match against Spurs in the north London derby at Emirates Stadium on 1 October (12:30 BST).

Arsenal were bullied in the corresponding fixture last season and tamely went down 2-0 against newly promoted Brentford on the opening day of the 2021-22 campaign.

A lot has changed since then and this is a very different Gunners team full of grit, determination and character.

After a first setback of the season at Manchester United in their previous Premier League game, all eyes were on how they would respond against a Brentford side that embarrassed United five weeks earlier.

Despite the absence of influential captain Martin Odegaard because of injury, they dominated from start to finish.

Gabriel Martinelli once again put in an eye-catching shift, Saliba was strong at the back while Saka, who also teed-up Vieira, finished with two assists as the Gunners swept to a third clean-sheet away win of the season.

Ben White, left out of the latest England squad, also played a key role while the margin of victory could have been more but for two fine saves by Raya at 3-0 to keep out Jesus and Saka.

Arsenal have not played in the Champions League since 2016-17.

There is still a long way to go, but signs look promising for Arteta as Arsenal continue to build on a strong start and give their supporters hope they can qualify for European club football's most prestigious competition.

Awesome performance from Arsenal.

Title contenders for sure.

If Partey was playing against Man U, I'm sure we would have won that game.

Lokonga left gaps in defence which allowed Eriksen to exploit. He was responsible for 2 of the goals conceded that day.

We need a much better back up for Partey in the January transfer window but realistically we'll probably end up signing one or both of Luiz and Tielemans on a free for them to join us next season.

I actually think we need two top quality midfielders if Arsenal want to take it up a level. lakonga is simply not good enough and agree he was at fault for 2 goals at united. Also elneney is out of contract at end of season and needs to be moved on.

Tielemens and luiz would be decent options but long term i dont think either elevate Arsenal to next level.

in january or summer we need to buy two top class midfielders; one who can play deep n dictate play like a xabi alonso or carzola, the other needs to be a creature like a rosicky/cesc type player.

our midfield will hold us back from the elite level to all round depth and quality is improved.

Excellent once again today.

Made a tricky fixture look easy.

Top of the league with 18 points from 7 games.

Brilliant start to the season.

Alan Shearer column: 'This is a different Arsenal - but they are not title contenders yet'

It's not time to talk about them as title contenders yet, but people now know that this is a different Arsenal to the team we saw just 13 months ago.

The Gunners' 3-0 win at Brentford on Sunday epitomised their progress under Mikel Arteta, because we all remember what happened in this fixture on the opening weekend of last season - when the Bees didn't just beat them, they bullied them.

Everything was different about Arsenal this time - in attack and defence, plus the way they controlled the game, and with their attitude and intensity. They ran out comfortable winners.

Part of that was down to how bad Brentford were, but it was Arsenal's performance that made the Bees play so poorly.

I was expecting Brentford to come out flying, knowing what worked last time, and trying to hurt Arsenal. They tried to play that way again, but it didn't work because they faced a very different Arsenal team.

This Gunners side is not only bigger and stronger, it is also more committed. They were better in every department and dominated right from the start.

When the Bees did attack in the same way they had at Arsenal before, with long throws or crosses into the box, they got absolutely no joy at all.

Their two strikers, Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo, hardly got a kick because Gabriel and William Saliba dominated them so much, and it was the same all over the pitch.

Yes, Brentford gave Arsenal too much time and space for their second and third goals, but those were far from the only occasions that they could not get near to them.

Only four of the Arsenal team who started that defeat against Brentford began Sunday's game too - Ben White, Kieran Tierney, Granit Xhaka and Gabriel Martinelli.

In just over a year, Arteta has not just built a different team, he has transformed the mood of the whole club.

He deserves great credit for that, because he got a lot of criticism after the way they started last season, with three straight defeats.

This time, they have won six out of their first seven league games and go into the international break at the top of the table. They deserve it too.

Snapshot of the top of the Premier League: 1st Arsenal, 2nd Man City, 3rd Tottenham, 4th Brighton, 5th Man Utd & 6th Fulham
The Gunners were ninth after seven games last season. They have only dropped points once in 2021-22, in their defeat at Manchester United on 4 September
It's been a strange start to this campaign by some of the big clubs, with Liverpool being nowhere near the levels we know they can be.

Chelsea have been the same, and they have had more upheaval after their change of manager.

Manchester United made a really poor start too but they have recovered well, while Tottenham are still unbeaten and are right up there along with Manchester City, who are still the team to beat.

I still think Arsenal's main target is a return to the top four for the first time since 2016, and they have not done too much wrong so far.

Their next two league games at the start of October, at home to Spurs and Liverpool, will tell us more about whether they can sustain this strong start but, right now, their fans will be enjoying what they are seeing.

Jesus shines while Toney struggles

Mikel Arteta 'really pleased' with Arsenal performance
Toney has had an exciting week after getting an England call-up with the World Cup only a couple of months away, but this was a game to forget for the Brentford striker.

We know Toney usually relishes a battle with defenders and thrives on balls into the box, but here he lost most of his aerial battles and it was one of those days where he has to hold his hands up and say the opposition centre-halves were better than he was.

I am sure he will recover from this pretty quickly though, especially because he is going away with England for the next 10 days or so. He should get on at some stage against either Italy or Germany too, and it is a big chance for him to impress.

Only one striker stood out for me at Emirates Stadium on Sunday though - Arsenal's number nine.

Gabriel Jesus has been brilliant since joining from Manchester City in the summer, and with four goals and three assists so far only Erling Haaland (with 11) has been involved in more Premier League goals than him this season.

We've seen Arteta improve the likes of Xhaka, who showed great desire and determination against Brentford, but Jesus is Arsenal's real game-changer for me.

His move was seen as his opportunity to be the main man after often being on the bench at City and he has certainly taken it so far.

Jesus is already a huge part of what Arsenal are about now - it's not just his goals and creativity that make him so important to them, it's his relentless energy and willingness to run in behind defences too.

BBC

Top 4 is minimum must this season and also competitive cup runs, no excuses.

we do need to still get a winger and midfielder in january.

Jesus is now on 4 yellow cards so 1 more he will miss a game soon. hopefully not the liverpool game.

That's a problem because he needs to avoid a yellow card for the next 12 matches for that count to reset. Realistically speaking he's gonna get a caution some time soon.

If I was Arteta, I'd advise him to do a tactical one. Get a yellow during an away trip when the game is done and dusted so he can miss the next game which hopefully happens to be at the Emirates against a non big 6 side.

I rather have him starting against the big 6 rather than Nketiah.

Jesus has been our best player this season. An absolute revelation. If I remember correctly, out of all games we've played in the PL, he's been MOTM in 4 of them right?

Vieira is a smart signing. Arteta signed him as Arsenal’s Bernando and if he becomes 50% the player Bernardo is he will be a great signing.

Arteta is slowly putting up the pieces to bringing Wengerball back and to play the type of football City play.

Players who are comfortable in possession, technically sound and good at decision-making. Vieira provides cover in the wings, at number 10 and can also drop deep to play as a number 6 and number 8.

Arsenal fans have been clamoring for a winger but there is no use of a trickster who will lose the ball more often than not and set up counter-attacks for the opposition.

It would take a remarkable collapse to drop out of the top 4 this season. It is sealed in my opinion, and the next missing piece in the puzzle is to sign a proper deep lying playmaker, someone who is press resistant and can dictate the tempo.

Arteta needs to find his Gundogan and I am sure he will address this position next summer.

I would do a bit of scouting and find a player with a higher ceiling. Tielemans and Luiz are solid players but they are not world class, and a world class deep lying playmaker makes a huge difference.

I’m sure there are plenty of hidden gems in Spain, France, Germany, Italy etc. that Arsenal can snatch before the big boys get a look at them.

There is a reason why no big team wants Tielemans or Luiz. They are not at that level.

100% spot on ive said this to, our new midfield targets need to take Arsenal to next level and Luiz and Tielemens dont do that, solid players and better then eleneny and lakonga but we need elite midfields or hidden gems.

Agree on tactical foul as are next league fixtures are

Spurs (h)
Liverpool (h)
leeds (A)
Southampton (A)
Forrest (h)
Chelsea (A)
wolves (h)

so forrest game would probably one he could miss and we would get away with it.

Hate saying this as a united fan, but this is now a serious football team.
Need things to unravel soon for arsenal otherwise this is a title challenge.
Partey and Jesus stay fit all season and I'm very worried.
Need back to back defeats to pull them back into the pack please

I think Arsenal will win most of these matches.

Chelsea away will be a tough game.

What do you think about Leeds v Arsenal? Any hope for Leeds?

Yesterday was the most stress free game I've watched Arsenal play in a very very long time.

We simply dominated from from first whistle to the last.
Awsome performance.

The next two games are huge and will define the season for us.

Arsenal are looking good. They are the dark horses for the title.

Honestly, we should settle for Top 3 just for now. Around March we can see where we are and go for the charge if it is possible

I’ve not seen the fixtures in detail but I feel Arsenal will have a prolonged period of seriously tough fixtures

The best thing they could have done is make sure to win all the winnable away games. They have done that so far

Winning an away game against lower league/mid table sides without much fuss.

Apart from last season where you were depleted, i never see this as an easy game. It should be a good fast paced fixture and i think it will be a high scoring game. These are games where Arsenal need to show same control we did at brentford this weekend.

Arsenals away form in last 6 years has been main reason for not finishing in top 4.

Spurs, liverpool n chelsea games will show if we have improved in big games, cant be naive like we were in man united game.

No title challenge, just a top 4 finish and win a cup this season would be realistic i hope.

Arsenal cannot risk 4th position knowing how some CL failure side from the premier league can possibly go on and knock them off by winning the Europa cup.

I personally feel UEFA needs to start considering 5 spots to Premier league for the CL as they have 5 or 6 high quality sides.

No, the Europa cup winner gets the CL spot even if they finish 10th in their league. 4th position has to make way.

UEFA really need to look into this rule especially considering the highly competitive nature of the PL as compared to the other European leagues

UEFA really need to look into this rule especially considering the highly competitive nature of the PL as compared to the other European leagues

From PL website:

A maximum of five Premier League teams are eligible for UEFA Champions League qualification.

In the event that a Premier League club win the UEFA Champions League and another win the UEFA Europa League and neither of these clubs finish in the top four of the Premier League, the club lying fourth in the table will drop into the UEFA Europa League group stage.

If a Premier League club win the UEFA Champions League and another win the UEFA Europa League and neither have qualified for UEFA competitions through their league positions or by winning the FA Cup or EFL Cup, they will qualify for the UEFA Champions League and the club finishing fourth in the table will drop into the UEFA Europa League group stage.

I think this rule was changed three or four years ago.
If an English team outside of the top 4 wins the Europa then 5 teams qualify for the CL.

Jesus will almost certainly pick up a yellow in the derby, because of his tenacious style of play and pressing in the most highly-charged game of the season. It will probably be a match of many yellow cards, it's Conte's first trip with Spurs to the Emirates.

Lol relax. Arsenal always capitulate every season, providing entertainment to fans of other teams. Same will happen this season.

Arsenal are looking good. They are the dark horses for the title.

City absolutely walk the league this year if Haaland stays fit and nobody else even comes close.

Arsenal are looking good but lack depth in key areas. A tougher fixture list in October should restore some semblance of accuracy in the league table by November. I expect City to establish a lead at the top by then which they will never lose.

City will be challenged but obviously are the favourites to win the league. Arsenal could be their closest challengers this season with both Liverpool and Chelsea struggling. Haaland is looking like a snip for what City paid for him. Arsenal will and can strengthen their side in January with some good signings to add to the good work done by Arteta during the closed season.

Tottenham are superior in every department. They don't play fancy meaningless passes nor is their 'keeper hyperactive so going under the radar. They remain unbeaten

Ex-Arsenal Head of Football Raul Sanllehi has admitted Unai Emery's second season at the helm soon became "hell" after the Gunners had already missed out on Champions League football.

Emery guided the club to fifth-place in his first campaign, missing out on fourth spot to rivals Spurs by a single point. He did, however, forge himself a second chance to spare Arsenal's blushes by reaching the final of the Europa League where Emery's side met Premier League rivals Chelsea in Baku.

With a place in the Champions League up for grabs, the Gunners suffered one of the most miserable nights in their recent history and were thumped 4-1 by a rampant Blues side largely inspired by an in-form Eden Hazard in what was his final game for Chelsea.

Defeat for Arsenal ensured another season in European football's second-rate competition. Sanllehi has since discussed how much of a blow that was for the club while the Gunners were trying to restructure the way they operated.

Speaking to The Athletic, Sanllehi explained: “It was crucial for Arsenal to make the Champions League, we had a good coach in Unai, but losing the final to Chelsea made us stay in Europa League, which made the second year hell for Unai.

"It had been the one-boss model. All respect for Arsene [Wenger] — what he did for Arsenal is unique and probably at that moment in time the best way to do it — but you had to develop, and that is what happened."

In the aftermath of Wenger's departure, Arsenal seemed unprepared to try and implement the next stage of their story. Sanllehi's job was to discover the right structure, something he feels he had achieved until his own dismissal from the club.

Sanllehi explained how he believed the age-old model of having one figure to oversee everything, effectively what Arsenal had under Wenger, does not work in modern football. Yet when he was axed in August 2020, the Gunners streamlined their structure and changed the job title of Emery's successor Mikel Arteta.

The current Arsenal boss went from first-team coach to first-team manager, something Sanllehi has made his feelings crystal clear about.

"They have betrayed the model a little bit now," he added. "By going back to the manager at the top, that is a mistake, but that is their mistake. I would have not allowed that to happen. But that’s fine, it is working so far for them."

Working for them appears to be an understatement, given Arsenal currently sit top of the Premier League and Arteta has just scooped the manager of the month award for winning every game in August.

Arsenal are reportedly battling three Premier League rivals for Alex Baena after identifying the Villarreal winger as a possible alternative to Mykhaylo Mudryk.

Arsenal are still interested in signing 24-year-old Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa to replace the injured Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey, 29. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta failed to bring in Luiz in the summer but is set to make a third bid for the Brazil midfielder, after having two rejected on transfer deadline day. (The Sun)

we need to be looking at better players then Luiz and Tielemens longterm if we want our midfield and team to go to next level.

Emile Smith Rowe will be out of action for Arsenal until at least December, the club have announced.

The England international midfielder has endured a disjointed campaign so far due to a groin injury, which has limited him to just four cameo appearances for Mikel Arteta‘s side.

Arteta: Zinchenko, Partey & Tierney all 'part of the team'

Mikel Arteta says Oleksandr Zinchenko, Thomas Partey and Kieran Tierney are all "part of the team" ahead of Arsenal's north London derby with Tottenham on Saturday.

Partey and Tierney were sent home by Ghana and Scotland during the international break with muscle and concussion injuries respectively.

Zinchenko, along with captain Martin Odegaard, missed the 3-0 win over Brentford before the break but both players could also feature at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday lunchtime.

Spurs architects of their own downfall in this one, as well as Arsenal playing very well.

Deserved win, 4 points clear.

What a win!!! 4 points clear of the league, sent the crap back down the road.

What a wonderful day to be a Gooner.

Spuds got dealt with.

Beautiful goal by Partey. Jesus should have scored more today.

The only downside is my concern with Gabriel as LCB, he continues to choke and make silly defensive mistakes.

He's not at the same level as White and Saliba as pure defenders.

Wow what a season so far for Arsenal.

Looking very solid and organised.

Champions contenders?

Brilliant game.

Gone are the days when we go one down or the opposition level the score and the players drop their heads.
Also the stadium is rocking from start to finish.

Of the senior players, Xhaka has been superb and Partey looks like a player whose had a huge weight lifted off his shoulders.

Icing on the cake is seeing Tommy, Nketiah and Viera coming on as subs.
We actually have depth in the squad.

Top 4 looks a distinct possibility...long way to go. Liverpool ran away with the league with this start 3 years ago...now it's just about top 4..

About Martinelli

His ball control and confidence reminds me so much of Cristiano Ronaldo when he was young and new at Manchester United

I would dearly like him to be a bit less selfless now and go directly for goal instead of always looking to assist others first.

Maybe it’s time for him now to play directly behind the CF in Odegaard’s position. He would be an absolute nightmare to handle!

Arsenal maintained their position at the Premier League summit as an outstanding display overpowered Tottenham in the north London derby at Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta's side were superior throughout and Spurs' cause was not helped by Emerson Royal's red card for a second-half foul on Gabriel Martinelli.

Arsenal made a fast start and took a deserved lead when Thomas Partey side-footed a precise finish into the top corner from 25 yards after 20 minutes.

Spurs were handed a lifeline before the break when Gabriel's foul on Richarlison gave Harry Kane the opportunity to score his 14th goal in 18 derby games and his 100th goal away from home in the Premier League from the penalty spot.

Arsenal were gifted the lead once again when Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris fumbled badly to allow Gabriel Jesus to score four minutes after the break, Antonio Conte's frustration made worse by Royal's reckless challenge on Martinelli that prompted referee Anthony Taylor to produce a straight red card.

Conte was attempting to make three changes when Granit Xhaka effectively ended the contest with a low finish past Lloris from inside the area.

Arsenal growing in stature

Arsenal's outstanding start to the season, aided by some smart work in the transfer market in the summer, has raised hopes that they might be coming out of a long period of post-Arsene Wenger transition.

The Gunners were bitterly disappointed to miss out on Champions League football on the final day of last season but there is an energy, verve and threat about Arsenal that suggests they can make a serious impact in this campaign.

Even in defeat at Manchester United last month, Arsenal showed signs of maturity and progress, emphasised here by the manner of their victory over the old rivals.

Arsenal flew out of the blocks to take the lead and even recovered from the frustration of handing an out-of-sorts Spurs a route back into the game via Gabriel's challenge on Richarlison.

Jesus has proved to be a superb signing, while William Saliba has been outstanding in central defence since returning from loan spells at St Etienne, Nice and Marseille.

There is still work to be done but Arsenal look like a club and a team who finally have a clear direction again, a mouth-watering mix of younger players and experience that bodes well for the future.

Arsenal's next game, here against Liverpool next Sunday, will be another significant test but there is growing confidence around Emirates Stadium.

Take every game as it comes

Quietly go about your business and keep picking up vital points on the road

If by February we are firmly in position to mount a title charge, then go all out and get the job done!

What about William Saliba?

That was a stunning, 10/10 performance. MOTM for me. Every time the ball came near him, he won it. Intercepting, winning a 50/50, dispossessing every player that dared to take him on with ridiculous ease. He just makes it look so simple.

The courage and composure on the ball to dribble and turn out of tough situations, even around his own box.

21 years old. I am convinced this kid is seriously special. Give him whatever he wants or we will regret it.

The was a world class performance by him. This man is a big difference this season!

Everyone who doubted Arteta should hang their heads in shame. They clearly don’t know the first thing about football.

It was obvious from the beginning that he was going to be a top manager and has a plan. Unfortunately, some people cannot see beyond the next result and have no patience.

Full credit to Arsenal for sticking with him and showing faith in his capabilities and not listening to the moaning of ignorant fans.

So looking forward to being in the away end at the Emirates Airlines Stadium, whatever its called.

Oct 9th LFC will bring this lot down to Earth if they aren't already by then.

Villa deserved a point today.

Same scoreline as yours and Newcastle are a better team.

Geordies were cheating, falling over with 1mph wind hit them. There should have been more time added imo.

Why would a Liverpool fan be bitter, have you been asleep last 4/5 years? :)

Im only mentioning Ill be at the 2nd best stadium in North London. Hope to see you there at the end when we teach you how to play football.

Please dont tell me like a few thousand Arsenal fans on social media, you dont believe you will win the PL?

I wasnt watching as Liverpool were playing.

I didnt mean Villa dominated but having equalised near 80 mins, reading how they worked hard, a point would be fair. But maybe they didnt..

Now tell me are Arsenal going to win the Premier League? :wenger

With the way Liverpool are embarrassing themselves this season, it would be very disappointing if Arsenal don’t whack them at the Emirates on October 8.

Arsenal is extremely unlikely to win the league this season but Liverpool are even more extremely unlikely to finish above Arsenal.

11 points gap with a game in hand is too much for Klopp who has more excuses than points this season.

Arsenal haven't beaten anyone above them in the League so far this Season ;)

Club needs to get to the world cup break in top 3 or top 2 positions, then the club needs to strengthen and sign a winger (trossard, Mykhaylo Mudryk) and at least 1 midfielder, strength and depth will be key to top 4 finish and winning a trophy this season.
