After noteworthy wins in both their warm-up matches, Australia, the defending champions, begin as hot favourites against Afghanistan in the fourth match of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 in Bristol on Saturday.

Overview

Afghanistan v Australia

County Ground, Bristol
2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, Match 4
Saturday, 1 June; 1.30pm local, 12.30pm GMT

The Aussies have lived up to their reputation, peaking just at the right time. Not many would've given them a chance until a few months ago, but emphatic series wins in India and UAE, and the return of their stalwarts, Steve Smith and David Warner, makes them one of the most dangerous sides in the tournament.

While Aaron Finch hasn't been able to carry his form in the warm-ups, Usman Khawaja's consistency adds up to a formidable top order. Their bowling unit is as strong as any in this World Cup, with skills and experience alike in both pace and spin departments. A collective, well-rounded performance in both the warm-ups, including a 12-run win against hosts and tournament favourites England, present enough challenge for the skipper and the staff to pick the final eleven.

On the other hand, a heavy defeat to England in their last warm-up, by no means, would dismay the ever-confident Afghanistan side. They might be the least experienced team in terms of ICC tournament appearances, but are capable of unsettling any opposition with a skilled set of match-winners in their ranks.

While their win against Pakistan gave a further evidence of their capabilities as a unit, a batting collapse against hosts England would've acted as an eye-opener. Skipper Gulbadin Naib will hope for a good start from his top-order batsmen against a strong Australian bowling unit. Considering the opposition, the enigmatic spin trio of Rashid, Nabi and Mujeeb might well have a strong influence in the game's outcome.

Key Players

Rashid Khan (Afghanistan): Currently ranked third in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Rankings for bowlers, the 20-year old will look to bring his experience of playing against most of the Australian batsmen in the Big Bash League, into play in batting friendly conditions in Bristol.

Steve Smith (Australia): Steve Smith's century against the hosts, England, in their first warm-up game gave us a fair glimpse of his skills and a staggering fortitude. His abilities to counter spin with his sublime wrists, would come in handy against the quality of Rashid and Nabi in the middle overs.

Conditions

Saturday is expected to be a fine, dry and warm day, with lengthy spells of sunshine. West Indies amassed 421 against New Zealand here in their final warm-up game on Tuesday and another run-fest can be expected with short boundaries at the County Ground. Dry conditions might bring spinners into play as it did in Afghanistan's win against Pakistan last week.

Squads

Afghanistan: Gulbadin Naib (capt), Mohammad Shahzad (wk), Noor Ali Zadran, Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmat Shah, Asghar Afghan, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Najibullah Zadran, Samiullah Shinwari, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Dawlat Zadran, Aftab Alam, Hamid Hassan, Mujeeb ur Rahman

Australia: Aaron Finch (c), David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Shaun Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, Pat Cummins, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa, Nathan Lyon

Some stats to ponder upon

Australia has played two ODIs against Afghanistan, winning both including a 275-run victory
at the 2015 World Cup that is Australia’s highest winning margin by runs in ODIs.

• Australia will appear at the Bristol County Ground in an ODI for just the third time, having
picked up a win and a loss in their previous two games at the venue against England.

• Australia have won their last eight ODIs on the bounce heading into this fixture; the last time
they won more in succession was a nine-game streak from March to September in 2015,
which began with a 275-run win over Afghanistan.

• Australia have won 13 of their last 17 ODIs played in England and Wales against teams other
than England (T1, L3); though, their last such fixture was a 20-run defeat to Sri Lanka in June
2013.

• Afghanistan have won three of their last five ODIs (L2) and will be looking to secure back-to-
back wins in the format for the first time since winning three on the bounce between August and September 2018.

• Afghanistan have won seven of their last 11 ODIs played in Europe; their last four such
victories have all come after having lost the toss.

• Steve Smith (Australia) boasts a batting average of 56.9 at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup,
the third-highest of any Australian to have played at least 10 innings; he’s scored one century
and four half-centuries in his last five World Cup innings.

• Rashid Khan has taken four five-wicket hauls in ODIs for Afghanistan, as many as every other
Afghanistan player combined.

• David Warner (14) and Aaron Finch (13) have hit the fourth and fifth-most ODI centuries
respectively of any Australian player; only Ricky Ponting (29), Mark Waugh (18) and Adam
Gilchrist (16) have hit more.

• Mohammad Shahzad comes into this game on the back of a century in his last ODI outing,
the sixth of his career; he’s managed to back up only one of his previous five ODI centuries
with a score of 50+ in his next appearance however.

Lets hope Australia bats first. Then, At least we’ll get to see more than 80 overs played.

Australia coach Justin Langer has asked fans not to boo Steve Smith and David Warner during the World Cup.

The batsmen recently returned from year-long bans for their part in the ball-tampering scandal and were jeered throughout the warm-up victory over England in Southampton last week.

Defending champions Australia start their campaign against Afghanistan in Bristol at 13:30 BST on Saturday.

"They made a mistake and paid a big price for it," said Langer.

"The media talk about earning respect and it's really important that people show respect as well."

Smith and Warner were given a hostile reception at the Hampshire Bowl, with both booed at the start of their innings and after being dismissed, while former captain Smith was also booed after making 50 and again when reaching a fine century.

Sections of the crowd chanted "cheat" at both players and fans wore costumes referencing sandpaper.

Smith and Warner, along with Cameron Bancroft, were found to have played a role in using sandpaper to tamper with the ball against South Africa in March 2018.

"After the experience of Hampshire, we have a pretty good idea what to expect - we've talked about it a lot and we can put strategies in place," said Langer.

"That said, when it happens it doesn't make it any easier. They are human beings, that's the truth - and that's what I find the hardest.

"I'm a dad and a lot of the time the kids see it. You feel for them personally and they are going to have to have thick skins.

"But I'd be disappointed by any player being booed at any cricket ground, regardless of what country they play for. It's never a good look when that happens."

Australia captain Aaron Finch confirmed Warner will play against Afghanistan after overcoming a glute injury.

Finch and Warner will open together, with Australia to choose between Shaun Marsh and Usman Khawaja to bat at three.

Afghanistan were thrashed by England in their second warm-up on Monday but impressed in beating Pakistan in their first warm-up earlier this month.

"They are a dangerous side - if you take your foot off the gas for a while, they will hurt you, and you still have to play at your absolute best to beat them," said Finch.

"Winning their warm-up game against Pakistan, they played brilliantly. They have got a huge following, with support all over the world now, which is huge for cricket."

Why Afghanistan why bat first.. had to ruin another one sided coming up. Bowling first would’ve got us to see some fireworks from Australia, at least.

One down for no run. Serves them right for thinking they could put on a score batting first.

Shame aus didn't win the toss. Would have liked to see the first 350+ total of the WC.

This deck must be the first flat pitch of the tournament . Well atleast Afghans have started off better than either PAK or Lanka.

Seeing a return to old fashioned ODI cricket in this tournament. However AFG batsmen were always likely to struggle against this Australian attack.

Afghans putting up a fight. Good to see them not fold like Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Poor by Afghanistan.

it's a 50 over match, play out your overs.

Zampa is turning out to be quite a resourceful spinner, why he always looks so serious tho?

This is how it's done.

Too bad these guys threw away some wickets

You start off cautiously and then find one or two overs here and there that you need to target 20 or more runs off of.

this Australian bowling will be thrashed by England on flat pitches. They are not that good after Starc and cummins

These guys are very courageous. You win half the battle. Confidently weaving unlike Hafeez like scardy cat resorted to a weak pull closing eyes dropping his head.

Afghanistan have done well here, score of 250 and we will have a fighting match. Rashid vs Warner & Smith, Game on Hai Bhai

:six

No surprise, Hafeez is the first to bail when the chips are down. When has he ever won a game for us from a tough situation? Hopefully, we'll see the back of him after this WC.

Gifting wicket to this Stoinis trundler.
