The aisles and stands at the iconic Lord's will neither be empty, nor quiet, as cricket's oldest rivals face off in the 32nd match of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 on Tuesday, 25 June.

Overview

England v Australia
Lord's, London
2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Match 32
Tuesday, 25 June; 10.30am local time, 09.30 GMT

England, who started their World Cup campaign with four resounding wins from their first five games, suffered a shocking 20-run defeat against Sri Lanka on Friday. The hosts, who came into the tournament as overwhelming favourites, now enter the toughest phase of their competition, marked by three tough games, starting with the one against Australia, needing a win. To add to their woes is the unavailability of Jason Roy, who has been sidelined due to hamstring injury.

Australia, powered by some monumental contributions from their openers and the wicket-taking form of their strike bowlers, currently occupy the second position in the points table, with five wins in six matches. Marcus Stoinis' return has further bolstered the team's balance, as the all-rounder returned figures of 2/54 in the previous game, against Bangladesh. The middle-order, which hasn't been able to contribute significantly in their last three games, is likely to face a stiff challenge against a well-rounded England attack.

Australia are ahead on the head-to-head count, with 81 wins to England's 61. However, the hosts have had an edge over the five-time World Cup winners in recent times, having won nine of the last ten games against them. With the stakes high for England, and Australia looking to continue their dominance, an exciting contest could be on the cards on Tuesday.

Key Players

Jos Buttler (England): The wicket-keeper batsman has the potential to change the course of any match with his exemplary batting skills. Buttler, who scored a match-winning 110* in his last outing against Australia, will once again be an important player for the hosts, against an in-form Australian bowling unit.

Aaron Finch (Australia): The Australia captain has been leading from the front in this tournament, having amassed 396 runs in six innings so far. Finch, who set the tone for Australia's World Cup campaign in 2015 with a stroke-filled 135 against England, will once again look to play a long innings on Tuesday.

Conditions

Though lingering overnight rain is expected to ease out by morning, the day is expected to be largely cloudy. Heavy and thundery showers might develop, leading to a delayed start. Teams batting first have won three of the last four games at Lord's, which makes the toss crucial.

Squads

England: Eoin Morgan (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler (wk), Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, James Vince, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

Australia: Aaron Finch (c), David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Shaun Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, Pat Cummins, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa, Nathan Lyon

• England and Australia are poised to meet for 8th time at the ICC Men’s Cricket World
Cup; Australia have won five of the previous seven encounters in the tournament to
England’s two.
• England have managed to register victories in 12 of their last 14 men’s ODI games
played against Australia (L2); they had tasted defeat 11 times out of a possible 12 to
them immediately beforehand.
• Australia have only suffered one loss in their last seven men’s ODI matches played at
Lord’s versus England (W5 T1); this is the first time these sides will have faced each
other at the famous venue since 2015.
• England have logged three victories in their last four men’s ODI matches at Lord’s
(L1) and have also won four of their five ICC Men’s World Cup games there;
England’s last such fixture in St John’s Wood was a comprehensive eight-wicket win
over Sri Lanka at the opening game of ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 1999.
• After suffering a loss to Sri Lanka last time out in Headingley, England will be looking to
avoid recording back-to-back men’s ODI defeats for the first time since January 2017
(v India); they haven’t tasted successive loses on home soil since September 2015
(the second of those games coming against Australia at Lord’s).
• Australia have an impressive record at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, winning 11
of their last 12 matches at the tournament; the only loss in that run coming against
India at the Oval in this edition of the competition (9th June 2019).
• Joe Root (England) has managed to record a score of 50+ in six of his last seven ODI
knocks for his country (including two centuries); the Yorkshireman had gone seven
innings beforehand without a half-century.
• Eoin Morgan has registered 1,815 runs in men’s ODIs played out between England
and Australia, 217 more than anybody else; he’s posted scores of 85 (September
2015) and 89* (June 2012) in his two most recent ODI knocks against Australia at
Lord’s.
• David Warner registered 166 off 147 balls in his side’s last game (against Bangladesh
at Trent Bridge), it was the second-highest ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup score ever
recorded by an Australian batsman; he is now responsible for the top two knocks in
that list (178 v Afghanistan, 2015) and comes into this match having posted tons in
two of his last three ODI knocks.
• England’s Jofra Archer and Mark Wood have claimed more wickets from short balls
than anyone else at ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019; picking up eight and five
respectively

Honestly feel a bit for England here and Eoin Morgan.

It will be his last WC and years of preparation and suddenly they are looking as they might not even qualify.

I am supporting England, they have worked hard and entertained us with 400+ runs, don't want them crashing out. Hope they give it their all and win hearts and the match :leo

They will get a flat pitch somewhere in these 3 games and that will bail them out.

What is the weather like :yk3

Seems like cloudy all day. Would have been ideal conditions for Jimmy.

If Poms lose today they will prolly crash out, I doubt they will beat India. Against Kiwis they have a chance.

England are flat track bullies. They have a good chance if the track is flat. If it is a spicy track then they are a mediocre side. In any case, it should be an interesting match.

Almost everyone from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and West Indies will be supporting Australia for this match. We need England to lose 2 out of 3, most probably against Australia and India.

Cloudy conditions, bowling-friendly pitch.

Starc and Cummins with the ball.

You know what is going to happen.

Battle of the titans!
Don't miss this one folks, has the potential to be a world cup classic!
Australia can go a long way to knocking england out of their own world cup!
Get the popcorn and hold on to your seat this is going to be one heck of a rollercoaster ride!

England v Australia | Match 32, World Cup | Lord's | June 25, 2019 | Match Thread

The last team England beat Australia in a world cup match was way, way back in 1992! Ever since then, it has never been a match to look forward to. It´s after so many years that this match has become a cause of excitement.

I feel that the team batting second will win this mouthwatering contest.

I am not sure which team's win will benefits rest of the teams today. If Aus win today they will get 12 points and will be in semi. But Eng wins today they will have 10 points. Both Aus and Eng will have 2 match left and their points will be 10. Eng could lose next two match. And Aus also could lose next two match. Both team will stand at 10 points. Hence one of Pak,Bd Sri team can get to 11 points and will be in semi. Or Eng could lose all of the matches and 4th spot will be open.

C’mon England. If you play your best cricket, you will prevail. You are better than Australia.

The world needs England to put their best foot forward today. They have been falsely accused of being incapable of handling pressure and crumbling under the weight of expectations. Today is the ideal opportunity to silence the critics in the Home of Cricket.

When the three lions roar, the kangaroos will whimper.

Jofra Archer is undergoing a fitness test this morning. seems to be an issue with his side. He didn't bowl or field yesterday at training

In my opinion, is the most important ODI match for England since the 1992 World Cup Final. It is even bigger than Champions Trophy 2004 and 2013 finals, as well as the the 2017 semifinal.

Everything that they have done since the 2015 World Cup has build up to this moment.

Falsely?
They've failed in pressure situations so many times. Ct17, ct13, cwc92, cwc87. These are only some of them.

No pressure then?!!

Of course there is, but you can only handle pressure when there is pressure in the first place. Today is the moment for England. They are a better team than Australia and if they play with freedom, they will win.

What happened in the 80s and 90s has nothing to do with this English team. They did falter in the last two events, but it is time for them to show that they have learned.

I can't call this one!
Both are strong teams.
What i know is this will be a more competitive match than lindia vs pak!!

Have the feeling its going to be ben stokes as the lone warrior against the aussies!

I kind of feel England and Australia both deserve to go through so far.

That may change off course if they all lose and Pakistan wins all.

I personally don’t see Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka breaking into the top four. The order might change based on the results of the games of England, India, New Zealand and Australia, but I think these four teams will be in the semifinals.

If England are eliminated by India, they will be disappointed of course but they can still hold their heads high. India is a phenomenal side and these two teams have been the best in the world for a few years now, and they both beat each other 2-1 at home.

However, getting eliminated by Australia or New Zealand would be a massive low for England, and it will completely undermine whatever they have done in the last four years.

Crazy as it may sound I predict this.

Eng vs Aus Aus

Eng vs Ind Eng

Eng vs NZ Eng

Aus vs NZ Aus

Aus vs SA Aus

India vs WI India

India vs Bang India

India vs SL India

Pakistan vs NZ Pak

Pakistan vs Bang 50 50

Pakistan vs Afg Pak

If Pakistan do end up on 11 points, NZ will lose all their games and end up on 11 too.

NRR will come into play and unless Pakistan absolutely thrash Afghanistan and NZ don't do too badly vs Eng and India, Pakistan might be knocked out on NRR.

This is how I feel it could pan out.

Free to play!

Jofra Archer has passed his fitness test at Lord's.

England have won the toss and chose to field.

LOL can't believed there would be a time where Bangladesh and Pakistan fans are supporting Australia

If only Afghanistan beat India and WI beat Aus the tournament would be even more interesting right now.

So then, England to bowl first. I hope I got that wrong.

Go Australia!

Really looking forward to this. England will be bruised after a surprise defeat to Sri Lanka while Australia would love to put one over their archrivals.

Tahir and Shadab got some good purchase out of this Lords pitch on Sunday, even Imad got some to grip. Perhaps this was an opportunity for Aus to play both Zampa and Lyon. A lot of English batsmen are more comfortable with pace on the ball too.

I think you forgot that England got beaten by Pak and Sl and if they go on to lose to Aus and Ind. They wont be eliminated only due to india but also the other three teams which won against them
Winning in bilaterals doesnt make a team great until they perform at the big stage. Fact is that England choked in last 3 ICC tournaments. If they lose again. They will seen as chokers like SA. SA was the one of the top 2 teams going into WC 2003, 2007,2011 and was very good in 2015 but they choked in all attempts.
If Eng are eliminated no one will care about their bilateral wins and they will be labeled as another mentally weak unit

Supporting Australia just because of the overhyping of this English side. Look at the arrogance of English commentators and Captain.
Just want them to get thrashed.

I want Eng in semies and Aus out for that SA have to step up once and last time in their WC campaign

England lucky to win the toss. That's the only way they would have won. Overcast conditions, asking Australia to bat first.

Australia a better team but England have a chance here after winning the toss.

It baffles me as to why would any team like to bowl first in a high pressure game.

England have made the wrong decision. If Australia survive the first 10 overs, England is dead.

Australia have not lost to England in a world cup match since 1992.

Yes, cant always depend on fast bowlers as England do play them well

Blood hell it feels like i am watching test match. No one can match the crowds atmosphere we asians bring to the stadiums.

Australia's bowling today looks good on paper. That is also a sign of great and bold leadership that they're willing to change winning combination to further improve their playing XI

Why are wrist spinners in this WC not as effective as they were predicted to be? finger spinners are doing ok but most of the wrist spinners seems underwhelming

Aust will want to bat first & Eng will want to chase, so toss irrelevant. Lyon should play.
