Mohammed Shami returned career-best figures of 6/56 against Australia on day four of the second Test in Perth, but the hosts took a healthy lead and then reduced India to 112/5 in the fourth innings.

India have thus lost half of their side chasing the 287-run target and Hanuma Vihari (24*) and Rishabh Pant (9*) have their task cut out for them on the final day.

Australia started the day at 132/4, with Tim Paine and Usman Khawaja at the crease. The duo frustrated India, getting stuck in and refusing the visitors a chance to break through their defence. They added 72 runs for the fifth wicket before Paine was dismissed by Shami for a 116-ball 36.

Finch, who retired hurt on the third day, came back to the crease but was dismissed off the very next delivery, as India got a foot in the door. Khawaja, who top-scored in the innings with a patient 73, fell to a short ball from Shami to give the pacer his fourth five-wicket haul.

Pat Cummins (1) and Nathan Lyon (5) were dismissed in quick succession by Jasprit Bumrah and Shami respectively. But Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood hung around to add 36 valuable runs for the final wicket, before Starc's woodwork was disturbed by Bumrah in the 94th over with the total on 243.

The Australia pacers came out with their tails up, hitting the deck hard to create pressure on India's out-of-form opening pair of KL Rahul and Murali Vijay. The ploy worked, as Rahul was dismissed by Starc even before the visitors opened their account.

Chesteshwar Pujara, who is India's top scorer in the series so far, could not replicate his heroics this innings, falling to a peach of a delivery from Hazlewood. A lot rested on the shoulders of Kohli, who walked out with his team in a world of trouble at 13/2.

Vijay and Kohli tried to steady the ship after the early wickets, notching up a 35-run stand for the third wicket. However, the India skipper was baited by a tactical trap from Nathan Lyon, as the off-spinner tweaked his line to bamboozle the right-hander. Kohli drove hard at the pitched up delivery, only to edge the ball to Khawaja at first slip.

Vijay followed soon, as Lyon used the rough well. Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari fought with a 43-run partnership for the fifth wicket. The India vice-captain went on the counter-attack, getting 30 runs with this approach.

However, the pacers responded well, peppering Rahane with short balls to push him back in the crease. He yielded finally, cutting a good length delivery from Hazlewood straight to point.

Scores:

Australia 326 & 243
India 283 & 112/5

If these two can bat out a session , Australians would be under pressure

Pant batting a whole session will be a miracle. I will give him few overs before he swipes at one of Nathan Lyon's deliveries to deep square leg.

Hit out guys...what's with this tuk tuk. Go out with all guns blazing.. this is boring meek surrender

Dr. Strange: I can see fourteen million six hundred and five possible outcomes.
Kohli: In how many do we win?
Dr. Strange: None

Umesh gone, Starc spectacular bowling to the tail enders. I would hate to be out there.

Collapsing like in the Monkeygate Test at Sydney.

I hate it when India and Pakistan show no guts or spine.

Indian team is collapsing like pack of cards.

Credit to Australian tail for showing gutsy spirit at Adelaide. From this point onwards Australians are in rhythm and will probably win at MCG as well. Brute of a pitch was that.

Kohli should be ashamed of his selection choices.

Where’s the poster that said “No Indian team with Kohli in will get out for less than 150”?

I came office 1 hour early as i had a feeling match will be over before lunch and i was correct, thoroughly enjoyed 5 wickets in 10 odd overs.

Or Shall I say the best players in the world lost to a temporary captain. Kohli needs to be humble as at the end of the day we know what happened  So much arrogance can destroy you

What selection blunder can we expect from Shastri and Kohli in next test? Someone should open a thread on this

Indian tail cracks me up. They get the whole gear with pads and helmets to literally get buckled the moment they attempt to bat.

Are international team tails that bad? Except Cummins, it seems everyone from Aus can handle themselves to some extent if not more.

come on let's not get carried away. It is Australian team. No A/B/C/D. Remember pakistan was B team in 1992 cuz no waqar and saeed anwar (2 best players). whatever is available is the team.

If Indian team without Kohli can become India B why can't Australian team without Smith and Warner become Australia C? :inti

Even Cummins can handle it. He has played well in the 1st innings and also played a part in the 1st test

Very happy for Australia. I hope this win brings more fans to the stadium for the next test. They were quite well behaved in this series so far.

Rahul and Vijay should be dropped now. They remind me of Shiv Sunder Das and Devang Gandhi. :inti

Let Rohit and Mayank open? or Pandya?, Ashwin :wa..

I honestly will prefer watching any Tom Dick or harry open the innings rather than those two

Yeah congrats Australia, they were by far better team and the victory margin shows that.

My Indian XI for next match

Agarwal
Ashwin
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Vihari
Pandya
Pant
Ishant
SHami
Bumrah

Theoretically a longer batting and more bowling options.

More likely they will pick Vijay and drop Vihari

There would be no openers in Test cricket if PP had its way.

Every time I see a bunch of teams with tai lenders thrown up to open. Consider how long the tail lasted against an old ball and a bunch of bowlers in the 4th inning, 5th day. Then imagine your part time openers against a fresh set of bowlers and a rock hard cherry. It is not a good idea.

Congrats to Tim Paine for winning his first test as the Australian Captain. The Australian Team needed this boost after a series of loss, hope to see an even stronger and dedicated Australian team show up in Melbourne. This was a fantastic test match and an excellent pitch. Loved watching both teams bowl and this Kohli's 100 has to be one of the top test knocks of the year. :kohli

This was expected & i posted it on day 1 match thread . If only Jadeja was in place of Umesh , we could have had a closer contest .

India player like India. Nothing to be surprised here. That first test which they won by just 32 runs was an anomaly. Normality has restored again. They will most probably lose every single match from here on.

Kohli going overboard with his misbehavior and sledging might be the turning point of the series and will fire the aussies and bring a sense of nationalism and pride in them. They weren't exactly hot favourites but the fact that a visiting captain has decided to take the liberty of daring to sledge will force the Aussies to do away with this new vision and mission statement of being nice guys.

The Indian captain has forgotten that he may be okay with sledging but his other ten team mates may not be able to handle what will come their way

Congrats Australia, outplayed us comprehensively. 1-1 heading to Boxing Day test, series set up beautifully. Hope we get our selection right for starters.

Good win for Australia. I'm not even that happy about India getting beat anymore, not in the position to celebrate our rivals getting beat when we lost at home to NZ who we should be beating comfortably in the UAE
