What's new

Australia [328 & 173/0] beat England [302 & 195] by 10 wickets in the first Ashes Test, lead 1-0

Well they still really don’t like Broad do they? Bowling at his head, sledging, trying to block him off whilst he is running singles, all sorts.

Australia will be all out for below 200 on this pitch. We all know how good they are against spin. England should have played a second spinner.

whats the history? also heard boos when he came out to bat, looks like a decent lad to me

400 was on. English threw it away by not pressing advantage when in control.

England pass 300, Broad playing some ballsy shots.

Some people getting ahead of themselves. It's a shakey Australian batting order with some new faces, and the pitch is turning. Australia's score is going to be somewhere around England's as well.

300 is a good first innings score on this pitch . England can concede a lead and still win

Poor shot from Bancroft.

lol @ Khawaja at 3, could be 2 down quick.

lol Usman, we are still his bogey team apparently.

I know I didn't make a post on the Ashes predictions thread but I have had a funny feeling that England will win at least 1 test on the tour. They were carrying a lot of baggage last time Down Under just like Dad's Army in Eng in 2015. Root is a young and ambitious captain whose captaincy has been refreshing compared to his mundane predecessor Cook. I predict 3-2 to AUS as they will lose the last match due to a lack of focus.

Almost an year ago , i seriously thought Renshaw and Haseed Hameed would open for their respective sides in the Ashes. Surprisingly neither is seen anywhere in the picture.

Form matters a lot for selection.

These teams don't muck around when it comes to the Ashes.

Renshaw has been in terrible form. Could not score any runs in the FC games leading up to the Ashes. Unfortunate but fair as he has been struggling for runs.

As expected really. The Aussies were too busy boasting of their pace attack to notice the frailty of their batting.

Blowing away my expectations here a bit at the moment, to be honest, but we really need to get Mr Smith because if not he will massively limit our lead, and we want 70 minimum.

Root needs to be more ruthless with his bowling changes, Woakes was delivering some total dross for a while there and should have been replaced very quickly.

Very impressed with England's bowling effort (much better than I expected) but their energy is fading badly here.

Need to get Smith out before the close or in the first few overs tomorrow if we want to win the match methinks....

When I first saw Shaun Mars, I had a liking for his game & thought that he would carry forward the legacy of the Aussie greats. Unfortunately he kept throwing it away, & also the fact that he kept getting injured at crucial times did not help him either. Anyway, the guy does play sublime shots, whenever he is at the crease. Hope he retires on a high, as the clock is ticking away for him.

Incredible batsman.

Soaks up pressure better than anyone else in Test cricket.
He's several levels above the second best Test batsmen in the world.

I thought Kohli was going to catch him during that golden patch, but nope. He's fallen away while Smith has continued to score runs and win matches.

Smith is best in the world by a distance, others are competing for second spot.

Fantastic day of the game.. This isn't a one sided contest.

Australians will bat last and England must be aware of that and hence if they dont let Australia take any lead in this inning, they would be having an edge.

Even 180 might be tricky to get in the 4th innings here.

England lost 6 wickets for about 100 runs today. Austraila will have to be watchful tomorrow as they don't bat as deep as England. Aussie batting will be heavily reliant on Smith & he would be keen to cover up the deficit, as any score they chase in 4th inning above 150 would be mighty difficult, given the nature of this pitch. Advantage England I would say at the moment.

Very good test so far. If England can take a wicket quickly they can take a good 50 runs lead.
England's bowling look a little fragile with Woakes and Ball not that good. Woakes will become better as the series goes on.
It's so pleasant to watch Shaun Marsh bat.

I think, Poms are struggling to manage the Kookaburra here. Took 4 wickets inside 25 overs, but not much threatening there after. If they don't remove Smith within 10-12 overs of 2nd ball, Aussies'll take a commanding lead here.

Need to get this Smith chap out. I still dont understand how he makes runs. Truly a modern player who is taking advantage of the poor test bowling across the world at the moment.

Never in control scoring at that pace at the Gabba. Australia were always in the driving seat. Whoever controls the RR on Aussie pitches wins.

Australia are batting slowly too. This is not a typical Gabba wicket.

I read that he nicks it just 8% of the time. The average for a top six batter in the modern era is 15%. That suggests extremely high skill.

Honours slightly even with AUS just ahead, the morning session tomorrow will determine the outcome of this Test.

Been a very good Test match so far. Honours still even. The match is moving at good pace so the game most probably will have a result. A 250+ target may be too much for the Aussies.

Highly unpredictable stuff, literally anything could happen and all results still a possibility. Been loving every minute of this.

Yeah me too, proper Test cricket. Pitch not the quickest, but good bowling is getting rewards and a fair balance between bat & ball.

Pressure on Paine here especially after dropping one.

Root captaincy here is good. Reading the game right. Short pitch with all leg side field is certainly right for now.
