Australia v Pakistan | 1st Test | Brisbane | Dec 15-19, 2016 | Day 4

Let's go for the win!! I believe!!! (no matter how impossible it may be).

Must channel that inner tuktuk spirit. Aussie bowlers once again get favourable overcast conditions.

If there ever was a time and need for an epic tuk-a-thon then this was it

This is one of the rare times where going for the target will be easier than playing for a draw. Both cases are nearly impossible but scoring 400 more is more likely than surviving for 2 days by blocking

I spoke with Wasim Bari just before the team bus left the hotel and politely suggested that he'd better pray for rain.

He replied that no, they would fight it out.

Admirable really.

(I also gushed that he had the best hands I'd ever watched a wicketkeeper have).

As I returned back home (120 km South of the ground) I went through the rain around 75 km South of the ground.

You must have some life my friend......

1) You've met Wasim at Lancs
2) Athers was your School Mate
3) You stumbled across Trent Boult walking across you one day at which you realized that he's not tall enough
4) You just met Steve Rixon in an elevator
5) And now Wasim Bari !!!!!

Am I missing any others ??

Very true.

Pakistan probably missed a trick in not playing the likes of Nawaz, Yamin and Hasan Ali for this Test only.

The conditions which wrecked the First Innings (cloud + lights) were easy to predict.

A better selected team would have sent Yamin in at 43-2, Nawaz at 55-3 and Hasan Ali at 60-4, leaving Younis, Misbah and Shafiq to enjoy Day 3's beautiful batting conditions.

Some really weird sentences used in the commentatory box..

It looks so awkward.

Have you only just learned that I'm a cricket groupie?

I was actually due to stay at a different hotel for this match. At the Adelaide Test a beautiful woman came and sat next to me at breakfast. I initially thought "what's going on here?" But then her partner joined her. It was Michael Slater.

I never intrude with the players, so when Slats went up for some more food I quietly asked the lady where they were staying in Brisbane. (I was ambivalent about where I'd booked, but I get a thrill from seeing the superstars of yesteryear).

She told me that she wasn't going, but she asked him on my behalf, and he replied "the old Sheraton" which I know is now the Sofitel.

So I changed hotels! And this morning I got ridiculous pleasure from seeing the Wagga boys (Taylor and Slater) ignore each other while sitting at the same breakfast table!

The trick is to book rooms with Executive Lounge access. Channel Nine book them so that their commentators don't get bothered by the general public at breakfast. People like me - and everyone else in the lounge - know who they are, but we are too polite to intrude.

And the ex-players generally like the attention so long as they are not intruded upon.

When I was chatting with Rixon in the lift last night I didn't even notice that Mickey Arthur was standing next to me until he got out!

Oh, by the way, the two Channel Nine presenters whom I didn't see in the lounge were Waqar and Warne. Warne's nocturnal habits mean that he never joins the others for breakfast. I've been wondering whether Waqar actually ate with the team - I hear that he is on really good terms with Mickey Arthur. None of the Mohsin Khan-style bitterness seems to be there.

I was disappointed about not seeing Waqar - he is a huge hero of mine.

Cricketers are like everyone else. They love being congratulated on what they did well.

Steve Rixon was really happy to be recognised for what he had achieved as NZ coach. Wasim Bari was proud that forty years later people still congratulate him on his wonderful wicketkeeping. And Slats beamed like a Cheshire Cat when I told him that I'd enjoyed his career and thought he should have got 20 more Tests!

I can see how the 2009 and 2010 teams were easily corrupted though. I can't corrupt Ian Chappell or Mark Taylor, so my access to them isn't a problem.

This Pakistan team has really tight discipline. There were team management people patrolling the lobby ensuring that nobody could approach the players. That's how I stumbled upon Wasim Bari.

It's a really well-run international sports team.

watching those Wasim clips is incredible... the bowling, the attitude, sad to see the fast bowlers we're producing now

Probably 2nd best all-round WK among peers - Marsh was best against raw pace, but not much against spin; Kirmani was by far best against spin, Knott was probably better in every aspect but spin; still probably I haven't seen anyone with such soft gathers. Probably, 2nd slip won't hear the sound of his gathering. Bari was damn good against every type & extremely self-protective guy - he batted at 10/11 for his 15 average & knew that, he is just couple of bad match away from drop; he never allowed the reserve WK to play even practice matches. I read that in 1982 tour, he was in his last limit - still played almost every tour match (18-19 in total over 10 weeks), even with bruised finger, till the Test series was completed, so that Imran doesn't get a look at reserve WK (Yousuf??).

May be mean & selfish, but I don't see such passion from current generation - it's probably natural justice that Umar was out of the team for a year.

Australia should have declared at a target of 600, unnecessarily declared so soon even before 500.

Aussies will win it comfortably, inside 300 runs. Only way the can be denied a win is rain - Smith kept 215 overs for that.

Yeah, it was Saleem Yousaf. I remember watching him and Saleem Malik as sub fielders in the Headingley Test, because the opening bowler Ehteshamuddin couldn't walk for four days after he had bowled five overs in a row.

And no, I'm not exaggerating.

They wouldn't have been able to make Pakistan bat under lights if they had went for the target of 600 yesterday.

I called it last night - ban helmet in practice session; it's creating faulty technique from complacence.

Pakistan got a small partnership and some people are worried if this batting line is full Tendulkars.

Edges flying all over the place already this morning. Can't really claim to be in control. Azhar took a nasty blow there, thankfully it wasn't too bad. Seen a lot of helmet knocks this test match with all this bounce.

pakistan Does not have Tendulkars , Dravids and Kallis in the batting . This is bound to happen.

Imran wrote it some where - Ehtesham faked fitness & got into the team, he was not even club cricket fit. Imran batted for 7 hours & bowled probably more than 7 hours to cover that (batted for 120+ & bowled ~60 overs & he had to be on field for every minute). After that, he made sure that every fast bowler passes his fitness test. From 82 to 91, I can't recall a single bowler limping out for on field fitness issues.

On the subject of how well the management is policing potentially corrupt hangers-on around the team.....

I was waiting for my car from valet parking - I was checking out - when I saw Wasim Bari in an armchair patrolling every movement in the lobby. He was watching like a hawk.

I approached him and congratulated him on his career, and mentioned that the website PakPassion had asked me to take pictures and asked if I could have a photo.

He didn't know what PakPassion was, but recognised that I was English and asked me for more detail. I ended up showing him the website on my phone.

He was polite and courteous but also firm and professional.

I was really impressed. They have clearly learned the lessons of 2009 and 2010 and are not going to let it happen again. Middle-aged Pakistan fans with English accents are viewed with suspicion, and rightly so.

Allright shot on the offside by Azhar, 2 runs. Only 399 more left.

And then they say India is a bigger draw than Pakistan down under :)) - What delusions !!

Junaids - that little mischief cost Ehtesham his career. He was easily the most talented pacer of his generation & played for almost 15 years in FC - never ever under Imran since. This guy was like a mad dog against whoever didn't follow instruction - Ehtesham, Haroon Rashid, Dalapt, Qasim ...... it's halt, aim, fire .....

I don't care if we win or lose at this point as long as YK, Misbah and Azhar get into some form.

Junaids you were right mate Just saw the above ^^^^^ post on my Social Media feed !!

My dad was a GP (family doctor) who had designed his working hours to be 8-10 and 4-6 daily primarily to maximise time in front of the cricket on TV in summer.

I vividly remember when Ehteshamuddin turned a strange grey colour after he had bowled the first couple of balls of what turned out to be his last over. My dad said to me "if Imran doesn't take this fat bloke off, he's going to drop dead on the pitch."

Astonishing really.

I just have a question out of curiosity.

Do England and Australia play Tests outside the Ashes?

No fielder nearby on the offside. They can easily tap the ball there and keep taking singles.

Convict - I think, AUS should pick 5 bowlers in IND than 6 batsmen. If the opening pair don't make it 5 down by 60, IND 'll bat once. One extra batsmen doesn't matter much, if Aussies are to face 450+ against 3 spinners. Only chance is to blast IND for ~250 & bat positively - in slow burning game, hardly any team has a chance to win after 15 session Test in India.

It's not that easy bro.... Trying to dab at the off side requires a slightly angled bat and doing such here (on an Australian Bouncy pitch) could mean nicking off to slips !!

A significant part is that it's a Day/Night match.

But the Aussie public was bored to death when India toured two years ago. They had lost 4-0 three years earlier to a bowling attack of Siddle and Hilfenhaus so Cricket Australia commissioned flat, grassless tracks for Harris and Johnson so that India would keep wanting to return, setting up huge TV rights sales.

Every single Test featured Australia scoring 500+ and India replying with 400+.

Pakistan are the perfect visitors, except for TV sales overseas. Their bowling attack is really good, but their batting guarantees a happy ending for the Aussies.

Played 3 (?) Tests, but I need to check. Ashes centennial at MCG, MCC bicentennial at SCG & one Test sometimes in early 80s were not part of Ashes.

That's what the bowlers want them to do because it will bring the slip cordon into play. Better to be patient and make the Aussies bowl straighter so they can just clip it off their pads.

Alhamdulliah First hour safely negotiated !!

just 5 more sessions to go !! :yk
