ah.. 1st this is a test thread. Even in ODI's he averages 45+. If i'm not mistaken he averages 50+ at 2nd dig (while chasing). I stand corrected, if thats the case your argument has no water.

Whats his average in World Cups? I think he has done well there too. Again i stand corrected.
Don't need to look at stats, you just have to see him bat.

I strongly agree.

The pressure player for SA has always been Smith.

Time and again you see the likes of Kallis and de Villiers losing their wickets under the cosh.

It doesn't. But that's where the perception that SA are mentally weak comes from. It shouldn't, as it's two different formats, but that's where it comes from. Same as the OZ rugby scrum. It can perform well and dominate teams like England during off years, but everyone remembers our scrum getting crunched during WC time and that's what everyone remembers.

Win the WC and it will kill that perception for good.

lol your scrum has always been weak. The breakdowns have never been Australia's strongest suit either.
But your comparison is irrelevant to the point at hand. Every rugby union game is a test match (no ODI VS Tests).

Ah Rugby? :)

soso can you finally admit this AB's team is special?

Played against 16 and had no ball for 40 mins yet we still gunned down the English last week :)))

he scores runs everytime i see him bat. Hence we need the stats to dismiss my notion. Again what does AB average in world cups. And what is his average batting 2nd in ODI's as well?

special and resilient. What a game that...

Just watch him in a KO game, he's nothing like the gun player you usually see he's always fidgety at the crease and forces shots that aren't on.

Not true about the breakdown. When we had David Wilson in the late 90s and then George Smith and Phil Waugh in the early 2000s competing for the No7 spot our game was based around quick recycle and clearance from the breakdown. It was when we lost those fetchers and backrowers like Kefu that we lost the Bled to the ABs and haven't remotely looked like winning it since.

You can choose to ignore or disagree with my comment as you choose. You asked where the mental block issue was coming from. IMO it's because you have folded at every WC which is what people remember. The point is unless you win the World Cup everyone will see you lot as chokers. Whether it's in Tests or ODIs. It's not logical. It just is.

And to be honest the only real choke was in 1999.

Well they folded pretty bad in the WI as well. Gave us a good game in the pool match but then were 5 down for 50 or something in the knockout.

Humbug! The bad maths in 2003 was comical, and there were a couple of great ones in the 2011 World Cup: bowled us out for 190 but ended up losing, and then the way they went out in the quarters to NZ was epic.

The fun starts 9 minutes in.

again i need stats. For starters i dont know how many KO games he has played, runs he scored and how he got out etc. You cant form a baseless opinion and shove it down throats. It does not work like that

basicaly people are stupid? Is that what you're telling me?

we've produced some resilient players, thanks. How many teams have chased 400?
World Cup or not that aint changing
Had that been a world cup KO game you probably would have lost.

You don't have resilient players who are capable of winning you a world cup, I would love to be proved wrong but I don't think I will be. Your players freeze when the lights are up and it's do or die.

It's a lot harder to break a bad perception then it is to gain one.

For instance people like Dhawan mocking Watson's injury is apparently fine for some because of stuff Steve Waugh may have said 15+ years ago.

I don't think this Australian team is an 'uglier' or has less sportmanship than any other team going around but you can bet everyone thinks they're the worst.

Nobody in the current team has even played with Waugh.
Most wouldn't have even played with Hayden.

South Africa goes as favorites all the time and somehow from winning positions messes it up. The current odi team doesn't have any quality batsmen, sorry JP, Faf, Miller, AB, Smith, Kallis all are chokers barring :amla

That was disgraceful and should have been banned for a match or two.

Dhawan is a village idiot :rana but boy he bats like a baws :sachin

You won't find a gentleman in the current Indian side, the great man has retired :sachin

People form perceptions on all manner of things. Just like the perception of the AB was that they were only good in between WCs. Until they got the monkey off their back by winning the WC at home.

Put it this way. You can be on time for work 95% of the time, but if the 5% of the time you are late is when you have meetings with senior management and you make them wait, the perception will be that you are always late. Even if you show them stats that you are on time 95 % of the time.

It's simple. Win the WC and that perception will go away. I don't know how much clearer I can make it.

I came to discuss some Ashes and see you guys talking about SA chokiness. Can't that be talked somewhere else. Let's discuss how England got pasted!!!!

Soso wants to fly the flag for his country. It was either humour him or listen to the Indians talk about how the IPL improved Jonno :D

Well done Australia they have played some excellent cricket so far and that despite some of the weaker links in the team failing (watson, Smith, Bailey etc...).

If Australia can take a 1-0 lead if can boost there confidence and they can then hope some of the fringe players in the team can up there performances as the series goes along.

England once again seem to have started a series looking drunk and disorganised out in the middle.
