Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has included batsman Anamul Haque Bijoy and left-arm spinner Taijul Islam for the upcoming Sri Lanka series.

Anamul replaces Liton Das while Taijul replaces Shakib Al Hasan, with both Shakib and Liton having been allowed a break for the series. Both Shakib and Liton had asked for a leave after the World Cup.

Abu Jayed Rahi, the pacer who was with the World Cup squad but did not get a game, has been excluded from the Sri Lanka tour while the rest of the members of the World Cup squad will travel.

"Shakib and Liton are not going to Sri Lanka. So we included Bijoy and Taijul in their position. Since Bijoy played well in domestic cricket, we included him while we needed a left-arm spinner in place of Shakib and Taijul was the choice. Rahi has not been included from the World Cup squad as we had to announce a 14-member squad," chief selector Minhajul Abedin told reporters on Tuesday.

Although there were question marks over injuries of a number of key players during the World Cup including Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Mohammad Saifuddin, all four of them have been deemed fit to take part in the Sri Lanka tour, where Bangladesh will play three ODIs -- on July 26, 28 and 31 -- all in Colombo after a practice match on July 23.

The team will depart for Sri Lanka on July 20.

Bangladesh squad: Mashrafe Bin Mortaza (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Mahmudullah Riyad, Mehedi Hasan Miraz, Mohammad Mithun, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mushfiqur Rahim, Rubel Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Soumya Sarkar, Mosaddek Hossain, Taijul Islam

I am absolutely livid.

Bangladesh cricket will go nowhere if they keep on making these blunders. Mashrafe has no business being in ODI team right now.

No Shakib? No Liton? Wow.

I will not be surprised if SL wins this 3-0.

BD lost the plot completely. Too much politics and too many stubborn/delusional people.

Not surprised with the team. Wont be surprised with the results.Absolute bizzare that Mash wants to continue playing while being an MP. Less said about Bijoy, the better. that guy isnt International material

I know Bangladesh aren't minnow anymore but how could Shakib ask for a leave? Is he playing some T20 cricket?

Losing Shakib is like losing half the team. SL favourites now

They are still minnows based on their WC performance.

Oh man Bangladesh players seem to have similar issues to their Pak counterparts...no one wants to leave?

Look at Hafeez? dragging his feet.

And Mushrafe now with those heavily strapped knees coming in at 70-75 mph...you have absolute nowt to offer.

And then you have Morgan who is thinking of calling it off at 32? ....lol

lol... amazing ... abs amazing ... lol

Sakib deserves the break, poor chap had all of the Bang nations hopes on his shoulders... he needs rest but unless Lition had some serious family issue (i hope not), he would be stupid to take time off.. this was the time to put his stamp on the team.. he had a decent outing in a couple of WC games and why leave now .. poor..

Bad call to retain Mashrafe. They need to build for the future and they can’t afford a specialist captain.

I believe Shakib is going for Hajj.

Look at Bangladesh going to Lanka and winning a couple of matches and everyone forgetting how ordinary we were in the world cup. We failed where it matters

Good long term planning by Bangladesh a master stroke infact they've passed PCB in forsightedness Masharafe will pas his valuable experience to young players

Shakib is going to attend in Hajj!! Liton is going to Marry in this month!! Both of them applied for leave & rightly granted!!!
And Mashrafee!! Typical sub continental mentality!! Won't retire untill kicked out!!!

With Shakib out, they had no choice but to retain Mashrafe as a captain.

Looks like Shakib and Liton have valid excuses (Hajj and marriage). I hope rest of BD players will take responsibility to win this series. This series win can give us a bit of momentum.

Mashrafe has to go. This man has nothing else to offer and is now a clear liability. He is losing respect by delaying retirement.

The future of Mashrafe should be cleared by Mashrafe & BCB. In all fairness, he should be given a farewell ODI match/series at home. But I see no point of him playing in overseas series.

I would have played Taskin Ahmed in place of him.

Bangladesh :)))

And Pakistan also considering Hafeez for captaincy :))) brothers in arms

What about Mahmudullah or Soumya Sarkar? These guys could skipper.

Mortaza is finished even at county level!

Motaza is in ruling party, he can do what ever he would like to, free vacation, why not. Future of BD cricket, who cares ?

Mashrafe was a useful player even a couple of years back but he should retire now

Who cares about Bangladesh squad ?

Way more interested to see who Sri Lanka select and seeing more of Fernando. They need to select some decent bowlers though.

Love your enthusiasm omorst7.

BD will find it hard to break free from the minnows tag if players like Mash keep clinging on to the team. His power and politics mean nobody can drop him, unless he drops himself.

But he's too selfish to do that.

Dude, we'll remain as minnows forever until the players take the game seriously and work hard. Unprofessionalism is the reason Chandika left his coaching job.

I can assure you that players do take the game seriously and work hard.

However, if the required level of talent isn't there, no matter how hard you work, you can't beat the top teams at the right time.

Bangladesh have two main obstacles and hence they may not become a top side anytime soon (probably never). The two obstacles are:

1) Politics: Our selectors/coaches/captain don't have 100% freedom. Our ruling party interferes in all matters and that includes cricket. Until and unless we eliminate political influence, we can't move forward.

2) Mental blocks: This is probably the most significant one and it is an issue with many lower-tier teams. They get psychologically bogged down once there is too much pressure. Bangladesh is a team that mostly relies on confidence rather than skills; when they lose confidence, they lose badly.

Mortaza ruled out of Bangladesh’s tour of Sri Lanka

Tamim Iqbal will lead Bangladesh on their tour of Sri Lanka after regular captain Mashrafe Mortaza was ruled out through injury.

The right-arm seamer picked up a left hamstring injury during training, later revealed to be a grade 1 tear, ruling him out of action for between three and four weeks.

Tamim does have previous international leadership experience, having skippered the Tigers in one Test in New Zealand in 2017 following an injury to then-captain Mushfiqur Rahim. This will however be his first time leading in ODIs.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board declined to name a replacement in the squad, which has already been announced. The sides will play three ODIs in Colombo, on 26, 28, and 31 July.

Sri Lanka’s sports minister has ordered the sacking of the national cricket coach after a lacklustre World Cup campaign that saw just three wins from nine games, officials said Friday.

Chandika Hathurusingha and his assistants would be fired after Sri Lanka’s upcoming one-day series against Bangladesh, a Sri Lanka Cricket source said.

Sports minister Harin Fernando has ordered the coaches “should go after the Bangladesh tournament,” the official said, adding that Fernando had wanted to make the changes before the World Cup.

Under-pressure Hathurusingha had insisted last week he would stay to see out his contract.

“I have another 16 months,” he told reporters after returning to Colombo from the tournament where Sri Lanka finished a disappointing sixth. “I hope to remain until my contract runs out.”

Hathurusingha also acknowledged that team management had to “accept responsibility for what happened.”

Bangladesh arrives in Sri Lanka on Saturday to become the first foreign sports team to visit the island since the April 21 suicide bombings that killed 258 people.

The series starts on July 26 and ends on August 1 at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

The contracts of fielding coach Steve Rixon, batting coach Jon Lewis and fast bowling coach Rumesh Ratnayake will also not be renewed when they end, according to Sri Lanka Cricket officials.

Sri Lanka cricket was in crisis when Hathurusingha was appointed in December 2017, after a successful three-year spell in charge of Bangladesh.

They had just been hammered in Tests by India at home and away, and played poorly in one-day internationals. Under Hathurusingha, Sri Lanka notched up Test wins against England and Australia.

The likes of Niroshan Dickwella, Lahiru Kumara, Akila Dananjaya and Lakshan Sandakan, who all missed out on Sri Lanka's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 squad, are back for the ODI series against Bangladesh.

Four players – Milinda Siriwardena, Jeffrey Vandersay, Suranga Lakmal and Jeevan Mendis – are exclusions from the squad that travelled to England for the World Cup.

Overall, as many as 10 players (listed below) return to the fifty-over squad after varying duration of stints on the sidelines.

29-year-old Dinesh Chandimal, who led the side until as recently as October 2018, has been overlooked once again.

Meanwhile Nuwan Pradeep, whose World Cup campaign was cut short due to an onset of chickenpox, makes a comeback.

Mashrafe Mortaza has been replaced by Taskin Ahmed.

Mohammad Saifuddin has also been ruled out. 33 years old (who will be 37 by 2023 WC) Farhad Reza has replaced him.

Though Reza has topped the wicket chart in List A DPL competition, will he be an option for WC 2023 I doubt. I would rather want to see some young pacer like Khaled Ahmed or Qazi Onik given a go in the ODI side.

Another interesting name is Afif Hossain who is a batting allrounder, bowls spin. He can be groomed for the Shakib role.

COLOMBO: The Bangladesh cricket team arrived in Sri Lanka amid tight security on Saturday, the first foreign sporting side to visit the island since the deadly Easter attacks earlier this year.

More than 250 people were killed in the April 21 bombings targeting hotels and churches that were claimed by Islamist militants, and Sri Lanka has been under a state of emergency since.

The Bangladesh team was provided with a level of security usually reserved for visiting state dignitaries, with additional deployments at their hotel and armed guards for their motorcade.

“We have special security arrangements at match venues too,” a police official said.

Bangladesh will play three One-day Internationals on July 26, 28 and 31 at the R. Premadasa International Stadium in Colombo.

Sri Lanka had previously expected New Zealand to be the first foreign sporting visit.

The Black Caps arrive next month to play two Tests and three Twenty20 Internationals.

The first Test against New Zealand will be played in Galle starting Aug 14, and the second will begin on Aug 22 at Colombo’s P. Sara Oval, while the three T20s will be played on Aug 31, Sept 2 and Sept 6.

Why is he hanging around? Can't bowl can't field can't bat. Asian cricketers just don't know when it's time for them to retire. That's what happens when they are built up like gods in their respective countries, they get a false sense of ego even when they know deep down that their time is up.

COLOMBO: Bangladesh were comfortable with the high level of security as they became the first foreign team to visit Sri Lanka since the Easter bombings, skipper Tamim Iqbal said on Monday.

Speaking to reporters two days after arriving in Colombo, Tamim said security was not a concern for them although the hosts had arranged tight protection following the April 21 attacks that killed 258 people.

“The security has been fantastic ... The facilities they have given us are top notch,” he said. “We are feeling very comfortable. There is nothing except cricket [that] we are thinking of. The boys are enjoying the hotel and if they want to go out, it is completely safe for us.”

A local Islamic extremist group was blamed for the April 21 suicide bombings against three churches and three luxury hotels in Colombo. The authorities on Monday extended a state of emergency by a further month till Aug 22 giving more powers to security authorities to arrest and detain suspects.

Tamim said Sri Lanka had played in Bangladesh despite violence in his country and said his team’s visit was also a part of reciprocating the solidarity shown by their hosts.

The Bangladesh team members are provided with a level of security usually reserved for visiting state dignitaries, with additional deployments at their hotel and armed guards for their motorcade.

Reporters covering Monday’s press conference with Tamim and his hosts were subjected to airport-style security.

“We have special security arrangements at match venues too,” a police official said.

MALINGA TO QUIT

Veteran Sri Lankan pace bowler Lasith Malinga will retire from One-day Inter*national cricket with the first match of a three-match series against Bangladesh, skipper Dimuth Karun*aratne said.

Malinga was named to the 22-man Sri Lanka squad for the series.

But speaking at the team’s press conference in the Sri Lankan capital, Karunaratne confirmed the 36-year old fast bowler and former captain would only appear in the first game.

“He is going to play the first match. After that he is retiring. That’s what he said to me. I don’t know what he said for the selectors but for me he said he is playing only one match,” said Karunaratne.

Malinga, 35, will leave as Sri Lanka’s third highest wicket-taker in ODI cricket with 335 wickets in 219 innings so far.

Only Muttiah Muralitharan (523) and Chaminda Vaas (399) have taken more wickets than Malinga in ODIs for Sri Lanka.

He was Sri Lanka’s highest wicket-taker at the World Cup, claiming 13 scalps in seven innings.

Malinga retired from Test cricket in 2011 but continued to remain available in other formats since then.

Bangladesh will play three One-day Inter*nationals on July 26, 28 and 31 at the R. Premadasa International Stadium in Colombo.

Sri Lanka had previously expected New Zealand to be the first foreign sporting visitors but the Black Caps will now arrive next month to play two Tests and three Twenty20 Internationals.

The first Test against New Zealand will be played in Galle starting Aug 14, and the second will begin on Aug 22 at Colombo’s P. Sara Oval.

The three T20s will be played on Aug 31, Sept 2 and Sept 6.

Sri Lanka’s bench strength pleases Karunaratne after 3-0 sweep

SL v Ban, 3rd ODI, reaction

Following his team’s clean sweep of the three-match one-day international series against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne expressed satisfaction at the bench strength displayed during the course of the triumph.

Sri Lanka had three batsmen amass over 100 runs in the series, as opposed to only one such player for Bangladesh. Moreover, the performances of some of their youngsters, such as Avishka Fernando, who once again provided a glimpse of his immense potential with a match-winning 75-ball 82 in the second ODI, came as encouraging signs for their future.

In the third ODI, Dasun Shanaka and Wanindu Hasaranga came good with bat and ball. Sri Lanka will also take heart from the fact that Player of the Series Angelo Mathews carried his late World Cup form here to finish as the highest run-scorer from either side – just the kind of initiative they needed the senior player to show after losing yet another high-profile star in Lasith Malinga

"The young players grabbed their chances really well," Karunaratne said after the third ODI on Wednesday, 31 July. "If there's a lot of competition and there's a strong bench, if a player is injured I can easily bring another player.

“I think this is the way we have to build a good line-up. This is the time we have to bring some youngsters for the next couple of years. We've had an issue recently, where we didn't have that strong bench. But players are now ready, and they'll grab the chances that come their way."

Karunaratne also pointed to players such as Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka, both of whom have spent the last few months out of the team, to further reinforce the wide pool of talent available to tap into as they begin to build and plan for the next four-year cycle, culminating in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, in India.

"You need a lot of players to build up that competition within a team so that players are constantly putting pressure on each other to perform," he said. "If you have a strong bench, the players who are in the team have to take that responsibility. There are a lot of players trying to get that chance, so there's pressure on the XI. I have a team I can work with. The youngsters have a great energy about them as well."

Karunaratne did, however, admit that Sri Lanka aren’t particularly well-stocked at the moment in terms of wicket-taking bowlers. That was manifested in the fact that three of the four highest wicket-takers in the series against Bangladesh belonged to the visiting team.

Especially with Malinga having now retired from ODIs, Sri Lanka are in great need of a bowler who can show similar incision. “We need to find bowlers who can get us wickets," Karunaratne said. "We have to find those players who deliver in tough situations. Today, pretty much everyone had a bowl, and they came up with wickets. That's what I expect when I make a bowling change – that whoever comes on will build pressure and make those breakthroughs."

SL absolutely have every reason to be pleased. They didn't just win; they thrashed the opponent.

But, real test begins when they face NZ. If they beat NZ, they are on the right track.
