Could Jasprit Bumrah be India's greatest ever bowler?

Would love him to take 400 test wickets but I don't think with that stressful bowling action, he has it in him to take that many wickets.

As an Indian cricket fan want one WC and one Eng,SA test series wins with him contributing heavily.. don't care about his wickets record

if this guy is back to his best and at his peak, no one from the current modern era comes close. Absolutely no one. Not cummins and definitely not rabada.

This is true!

Would love to see us lifting trophy in front of home fans. Test series win in SA may still seem distantly possible one day but to win in England, we need to first get over the mental block we've imposed on ourselves.

What, a 50-over World Cup? Lifting the trophy in front of home fans?

Been there done that!

Next 5 years are important for him. If he wants to succeed and help India win in International Cricket then he has to stop playing in IPL. He is an injury prone bowler. He got injured in IPL before our last England tour as well. Now he is going to play 5 months of tamasha cricket in the next 8-9 months. :inti

I know. But the next WC will be played entirely in India, something which has never happened before. Besides it'll be last WC for Rohit & Kohli at least. Would love them to sign off from their illustrious careers with a WC win at home.

we are 100% winning it but I prefer to win a series away in England and Australia in tests

tests is always the real cricket format despite its flaws.

I really do not understand how you are so over confident.

Firstly, We dont have killer spinner and a killer spin AR, like we did in 2011. For the spin AR, depending upon Jadeja's batting, he could play the role. But we need a really top spinner, which Jadeja is not. Pandya will be of no use in that WC, and we will need to go with 3 pacers + 1 Spinner + 1 spin AR. Kohli could take a gamble to play Pandya by playing 2 pacers + 1 Spinner + 1 spin AR + 1 pace AR. Though, this could backfire.

Batting, I think we will be decent though.

However, even if I was confident, I would not go out claiming that we would win 100%. Because, firstly, Kohli does not have a track record of winning ODI trophies. Secondly, you never know in Cricket.

india are just too strong in odi and tests in general. Provided india actually select the right player, they are destined to win the WC comfortably. There is plenty of batting talent and bowling too as bumrah will be in his prime by 2023. saini and a few others will step up. prasidh krishna is an excellent talent. shami is still only 29 and he is a tank. They could have won the world cup in 2019 if dhawan had not got injured. Rahul in the middle order with dhawan batting, I have no doubt the 2019 WC would have been India's. politics and selection bias ruined our chance.

Wonder if he’ll ever be the same after that injury. Many fast bowlers past have lived by the sword and died by it.

As said in the IPL thread. What back injuries impact the most is the ability of pacers to ball yorkers and looking at Bumrah I think he is clearly struggling at the moment. Will need to put in hard yards but, as said previously on few occasions its a difficult action to carry on for long time so will need some real effort which is not impossible but tough.

I spent my lockdown period on PP knowing that Shaheen and Naseem are already better than Bumrah and Shami. So, no surprises.

jasprit bumrah as long as he is fit and healed, he will always be the best bowler. Great bowlers can have off nights. I am sure many here are hoping to see him fail. We shall see though. I am a little concerned about his action too but he still has the pace.

India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah said the freedom he enjoys playing under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in Mumbai Indians set-up has been a huge confidence booster for him in his career. Bumrah is an integral part of Mumbai Indians’ team, which won record four Indian Premier League titles under Rohit’s leadership.

“For me, he (Rohit) has always given me the freedom, he has always told me to express yourself (myself), be whatever you want, be it any situation, take ownership of your own bowling, so that gives me a lot of confidence and a responsibility that I’m responsible for whatever I’m doing,” Bumrah said.

“So that’s a big thing for a captain because then he gives a bowler so much of confidence. He trusts you so much and he trusts the decisions that you will take and that’s a very positive sign.” Not just Bumrah, Rohit’s captaincy has also come in for praise from fellow teammates and Mumbai Indians’ coaching staff.

“He is always open to take suggestions on the ground. I have seen him a lot of times when there is a crunch situation, or when he is put under pressure, that time he is very calm, cool and composed. He takes tough decisions during that time,” Mumbai Indians batsman Suryakumar Yadav said in a video posted on the team’s twitter handle.

While Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene termed Rohit as a “very instinctive leader”, former India speedster Zaheer Khan, who is part of the team’s support staff, described the right-handed batsman as “a thinking cricketer.”

“You have this very relaxed, cool looking guy. His mannerism when he bats, he’s got that elegance, which you can call it lazy elegance. But he is very intense and hard-core, when it comes to thinking about the game,” Zaheer said.

“He actually channelises his energy very well. He’s very good with controlling the emotions of the pressure situation, he likes to take that pressure on himself.”

If Cummins is hitting then looks like he is not back to his best. Will take some time for him.

3-8 (3 overs). 10 wickets in this tournament and among leading wicket-takers alongside Rabada and Boult.

Back to his best??

What an over from Bumrah!

Bumrah in the 17th over: 0, 0, W, 0, W, 0

Taking 3/14 in 4 overs

That's why he is the best in the world.

Form is temporary, class is permanent.

he is a very good player but he needs to prove it again vs australia in tests and also against england away in tests. He did well there last time whilst playing with an injury. Lets see though. If i were india, i would never use bumrah for home test games, umesh averages 21 at home.

Bumrah needs to stay injury free if he wants to be one of the best ever.

I hope money doesnt get to him and he starts neglecting tests like some of these other great players of the past.

I will still prefer test series wins vs australia away and england over the world cup anyday. Hell i would take test series wins away in those 2 countries over 2 world cups.

Having worked closely with him in the IPL, former New Zealand quick and bowling coach of Mumbai Indians Shane Bond is confident that Jasprit Bumrah is the best fast bowler going around in the world. Bond, for whom this isn’t the first time praising Bumrah, explained the combination of several nitty-gritties, coupled with the desire to be head and shoulder above the rest is what makes Bumrah the best in the world.

“He has a desire to continue to be the best bowler in the world. I think he is. I think he is the best fast bowler. He is a gun,” Bond was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald about Bumrah.

Being regarded as the best fast bowler in the world takes quite a bit of doing, especially when your peers are Pat Cummins, Kagiso Rabada, Trent Boult, Mitchell Starc, Mohammed Shami among others. But one would believe Bumrah deserves the tag given what he’s achieved just four years into his international career. Since his Test debut in early 2018, Bumrah became the only Asian bowler to take a five-wicket haul in South Africa, England and Australia. Last year, he became the fastest Indian pacer to 50 Test wickets.

And besides, the fact that he has excelled with his unorthodox action is one of the factors that make Bumrah special, reckons Bond.

“He hadn’t played yet and people say: ‘Will he be any good?’ There was a lot of talk about his action and that he will get injured and this sort of stuff. He is certainly unorthodox in the way his actions looks. He has a short delivery stride but he has got a strong, braced front leg, he has a supple wrist and, obviously, bowls fast and can move the ball around and is very, very skilled,” Bond said.

“He has also got that very strong belief in himself. Sometimes you meet players and work with players that don’t have that. With him, it’s definitely not like that. He has an air of confidence about his own game.”

Touching upon his action, Bond feels that even after four years, there is a surprise element about Bumrah and his bowling. “He doesn’t run in fast. He sort of trots in and then the last few steps he really accelerates. He, obviously, has those straight arms which are a bit different. But for a guy that is not that big and doesn’t run in too fast, he has got good acceleration and he is genuinely quick,” he explained.

“I think that sometimes that can shock you as a batter. But the other thing is he has the ability to shift the ball both ways.”

Scored his maiden FC 50 today for India A!

Jasprit Bumrah smashed his maiden first-class half-century in the ongoing practice match against Australia A at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday. India were in trouble at one stage after losing nine wickets for just 123 runs on the board but Bumrah along with Mohammed Siraj put on a 71-run stand for the final wicket to lift the team total to 194. When the visitors' innings ended, Bumrah received a 'guard of honour' from his teammates as he made his way back to the dressing room.

In the second practice game, which is being played with pink ball, Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and opted to bat in Sydney.

India got off to a poor start as they lost Mayank Agarwal in the third over.

Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill then put on 63 runs for the second wicket.

Shaw smashed 40 runs off just 29 deliveries in an innings studded with eight boundaries.

The middle-order failed to get going against the swinging pink ball as Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha and Rishabh Pant all fell for single-digit scores.

Bumrah saved the day with the bat, remaining unbeaten on 55. He smashed six boundaries and a couple of maximums.

Bumrah also picked up a wicket in his first over on Day 1 of the second practice game.

Australia A were 36-1 in 10.4 overs before rain stopped play in Sydney. They still trail India by 158 runs.

The incredible rise of India as a formidable fast bowling unit has impressed one and all, and former captain of the Australia cricket team, Allan Border is mighty pleased with the kind of fast bowlers Virat Kohli possesses. The fast-bowling stock comprising Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav has helped India dominate with the ball overseas, making the onlookers believe that India’s bowling line-up has what it takes to pick up 20 wickets in a Test match.

Of the five pacers, the one that has impressed Border the most is Jasprit Bumrah. Ever since his India debut in 2016, followed by his maiden Test match in 2018, Bumrah has emerged as the leader of India’s pace attack. He became the fastest Indian pacer to reach 50 Test wickets, getting to the landmark in just 11 Tests. It was in IPL 2014 that the world first spotted Bumrah and ever since, his rise in world cricket has been phenomenal.

“It’s incredible, his rise through the ranks just out of probably IPL. It started there and he has just taken the world of cricket by storm. He has an unusual action, everyone thought he is going to struggle with injuries and things like that. He has had a little bit of a niggle of late,” Border said during a discussion on Australia’s Cricket Network.

“He is the real deal, isn’t he? He just has the awkward action but he bowls at good pace, so not the classical way of doing things. It is very much an Indian thing really, they just let the kids develop their own styles.”

Over the years, Indian cricket have been known more for their spinners, although the likes of Zaheer Khan, Javagal Srinath did revolutionise the art of fast bowling in the country. However, in the last couple of years, that mantle has shifted to India’s pacers, which is deemed by many as perhaps the best fast bowling attack in the world at present. Weighing in on the same, Border said it was about time India’ fast bowlers ruled the roost and the world got to see more of them emerge through the system.

“India really needed to develop some fast bowlers, didn’t they? Every time they toured anywhere, they were presented with grassy pitches, pace-friendly pitches. So the days of playing three or four spinners are long gone,” Border pointed out. “Bumrah is an interesting one, because he has the shuffling run-up to the crease and really just explodes out of the hand. He can get some serious pace too; he can go to 140-plus.”

The left arm of God. It’s how Australians of a certain vintage remember Wasim Akram’s summer of 1989. Pakistan, marked by characteristic batting implosions, surrendered the series, but Akram left a lasting impression on those who watched, read or heard about the left-arm genius.

Excitement rolls in his soft voice, when noted Australian commentator Jim Maxwell recalls the years. “That was an exemplary exhibition of fast bowling. He did everything, swing, seam, reverse swing. The genius was in full bloom. The buzz around him was enormous, and he justified every bit of that,” he recollects.

Few fast bowlers, he says, have since captivated the Australian crowd like Akram. One who has, he says with spontaneous excitement, is Jasprit Bumrah. “I can only think of Jasprit Bumrah. I get the same vibes and excitement when I watch Bumrah, especially when I watch the short run-up.” Eight measured steps before the explosion.

For reputed cricket writer and historian Gideon Haigh too, Bumrah evokes memories of Akram. “The last quick to have such a buzz precede him was Wasim Akram. Prior to that, the West Indians of 1980s – Holding, Marshall, Croft. That bunch. It can safely be said that Bumrah is the most exciting pacer of this generation to set foot here for a series,” Haigh says.

"30-40 years down the road, (Bumrah's) going to tell his grandchildren, 'I batted number three for India'...

"He won't tell the circumstances."

:)))

Jassi was bit unlucky todayy with the dropped catches

Deserved a 5-ger, was on fire in early session but so many easy catches dropped off his bowling

4/56 for Bumrah so far in the 2nd Test - outstanding bowler.

Jassie, Jasprit Bumrah, the test bowler deserves a bit of appreciation I guess.

Great bowler but he is in poor form in white ball cricket hope he does well.

Increased responsibility on him due to absence of Ishant,Shami and even Bhuvi

But done well today. Hopefully his workload is managed

Should not play IPL and T20Is (except WC) anymore. Both Shami and Bumrah needs to follow this.

Shami must not play any LOI game IMO for some time now and should get rotated for home games.

Bumrah can play occasional LOI games and should get rotated for home test games.

Let Siraj/Saini get more experience for home tests alongside Yadav and play only one of Bumrah/Shami/ Ishant at home.

For WT20, we have Bumrah, Bhuvi and Natarajan and keep rest as backups.

Freak bowler. At times, unplayable. India have a gem in their ranks.

Bumrah certainly is on his way to challenge the greatest ever Indian fast bowler in tests unless his career is hampered by an injury but IMO he cant reach the heights of Kumble, the greatest current Indian test bowler as Bumrah as a fast bowler cannot have 18 years career as Kumble or even play close to 100 test matches

at best he could play anywhere between 60-90 test matches and it would only make Bumrah the greatest ever in test if he could get over 400 test wickets , which is highly impossible given that Bumrah would most probably have injuries along the way as he plays all the three formats so he wouldn't be playing that many number of tests matches to reach the rank of greatest ever Indian test bowler

To be the greatest you should have a long career and keep performing during that long illustrious career, I think Bumarah"s half the career is already finished and at best he can play till the age 35-36 all three formats which would fall short to other greats like Kumble or a kapil dev

In terms of his impact in Aus, he is right up there currently.

So you want them to play T20 WC straight without any sort of T20 practice in IPL or T20Is?

Yes. Maybe give him a series before T20 WC if required...like Asia cup etc. But his workload should be managed for the sake of Indian cricket. India will play 16 tests in 2021 - 2 against Aus, 9 vs Eng, 2 vs NZ, 3 vs SA. We need him fit for those games and the T20 WC. I like IPL but would not want him to burn out playing for Ambani's.
