The never ending tournament is once again about to begin :)

Not sure how it ever was in the first place. These leagues are for the local fans only. Why would anyone in Pakistan care about what for example, the Mumbai Indians do?

There was no PSL back then & Pakistani players were playing in the IPL, plus the IPL's bollywood connection. These factors made the league very popular in Pakistan. Even the bollywood has died in Pakistan.

It was nice of RCB to retire Gayle and abd’s jersey, they could do it because IPL has been played for so many seasons now.

The Indian Premier League is set to begin on 31 March 2023. The 16th edition of the tournament will bring about some major changes in the playing conditions, set by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The ardent fans of the game have already seen these rules either in international, domestic, or franchise tournaments, but it will be a different ball-game all together when they come into practice in one of the most pressure tournaments in the world – the Indian Premier League.

The IPL have introduced two of the biggest changes in the tournament, first, the Impact Player Rule and second, the ability to review No ball and Wide ball calls by the batting and the fielding sides. Arguments have been made about the hindrance DRS reviews would cause to the flow of the game, but as per a section of cricket fans, this should make the game fairer.

Impact Player Rule

Imported from the Australian Big Bash League and tried and tested in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the ‘Impact Player Rule’ might turn out to be game-changer in the IPL 2023 season. According to the Law, teams can change one player in the middle of the game to suit the conditions of the match and the ground better to their favour.

The Impact Player can be introduced at any of the following stages:

Before the start of the innings
After an over finishes
At the fall of a wicket or if a batter retires
In between an over

Restrictions

Teams are only allowed to play with 4 overseas players, and a non-Indian player will not be allowed to replace an Indian player if the team already has 4 overseas players in their playing XI. The teams can however choose to field 3 overseas players in their original XI and then draft in one overseas player later on in the game.

Critics have argued that the Impact Player Rule will reduce the reliance on world-class all-rounders because one can always substitute a batter for a specialist bowler in the second innings of the game. But Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma does not think so.

“I don’t know whether it will impact an all-rounder, an all-rounder will always be an all-rounder. He will give you an option of bowling him anytime and making him bat anytime. Yes, with that 12th player, you can always fill that gap of having a 5th bowler or an extra batter. But you still want to put your best players on the park. There may be a slight difference to it but I don’t think it’s going to impact so much in terms of having an all-rounder. Like I said, we will see what the other teams do and try and learn from it as well, “ Sharma said ahead of the IPL in a Mumbai Indians press conference.

No Team Sheets at Toss

Captains do not need to give out team sheets at the toss any longer. The teams now can nullify the toss advantage by drafting in the teams as per the result of the toss. They are allowed to file XI players with 5 substitutes; out of the 5 substitutes, they are allowed to choose one player as an impact sub during the game.

Experts have argued that this will allow the teams to make 2 separate playing XIs, one of which they will choose dependent on the result of the toss.

DRS Calls

Players now are allowed to challenge wide balls and no balls, called by the onfield umpires. This was seen in full effect during the Women’s Premier League where BCCI used the technology for the first time.

Teams reviewed tight calls during the death overs of the innings, when things went down to the wire. For that matter Mumbai Indians’ pacer Izzy Wong got two of her rank full tosses reviewed in the final of the Women’s Premier League game.

The ICC Playing Conditions Changes

ICC made several changes in playing conditions in September 2022, which have already come in effect. One of the biggest changes was actually not a law change per se, but a clarification to de-stigmatise the non striker’s run out, also known as Mankading.

“The Playing Conditions follow the Laws in moving this method of effecting a Run out from the ‘Unfair Play’ section to the ‘Run out’ section,” ICC wrote in a press release.

In the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League, one will get to see the following (major) changes:

When a batter is out Caught, the new batter will come in at the end the striker was, regardless of whether the batters crossed prior to the catch being taken.

Saliva will not be used to polish the cricket ball.

Any unfair and deliberate movement from the fielding side (including keeper) while the bowler is running in to bowl could now result in the umpire awarding five penalty runs to the batting side, in addition to a call of Dead ball.

Match officials will award penalties to teams who do not complete their overs inside the stipulated time. In case of slow over rate, teams will only be allowed four players outside the 30-yard circle, till they catch up to the required number of overs inside the allocated time.

IPL reminds me of the long summer fasts in the UK never ending.

On a serious note the new sub rule is diabolical to say the least.

Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting has used the latest episode of The ICC Review to expertly dissect the upcoming IPL and provide his thoughts on the teams that will prove hardest to beat, the inexperienced players he expects to become household names and just how the new playing conditions will affect the tournament.

Ponting will lead a new-look Capitals squad into battle over the eight-week tournament, with Australia veteran David Warner captaining the franchise in the absence of regular skipper Rishabh Pant.

And while Ponting is hoping the Capitals will be able to build on their fifth-placed finish in 2022, the Australia great acknowledged just how evenly matched most of the teams are and believes this year's event is the most open for some time.

"It's a tough question…as very rarely does a team dominate the IPL from the start to the finish,” Ponting noted on The ICC Review when asked by host Sanjana Ganesan as to which teams – outside of his own - he thinks will reach this year’s final.

"Obviously Gujarat (Titans) last year were amazing, a brand new team and were able to win the tournament.

"The other finalist last year, Rajasthan Royals, I think have got a really, really good squad. And we said that last year, immediately after the auction, we were pretty impressed with what they were able to do and put a good squad together. They've only built on that again this year. I think Rajasthan will be there, thereabouts.

"It's a hard game to judge and a hard game to understand who's going to win. Who stands up in the moment will generally win more often than not. But if I'm looking at the squads, Rajasthan has got a good squad as anybody."

Ricky Ponting's team will be without Rishabh Pant for the season. Ricky Ponting's team will be without Rishabh Pant for the season
And while Ponting said he is still doing his homework on the make-up of other squads and was reluctant to single out opposition players that he expects to shine, the former Australia captain was quick to name two rising prospects from his side that he believes will prosper.

Ponting expects young India star Yash Dhull to build on the performances that saw him named captain of the Team of the Tournament at last year's ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup and predicted emerging all-rounder Aman Khan as another player that may have a breakout event.

“Yash Dhull, the ex-India U19 captain has had a really good domestic season and I'm hoping that he gets some good opportunity to play for Delhi Capitals through this season,” Ponting said.

"The other one is Aman Khan whom we traded from Kolkata (Knight Riders) for Shardul Thakur. He's been ultra-impressive in everything that he's done so far in our training camps and when we played our first practice game the other night he dominated that.

“I think he made 72 not out off about 38 balls and he is big, tall, strong and powerful.

“I don't know what a lot of the other squads have got as far as young talent's concerned, but I know we've got a couple here that are very, very good and we're hoping to be able to showcase them as the season goes on."

Ponting believes the new playing conditions that have been introduced for this year's edition of the IPL will take some time to get used to and the Delhi coach said he was keen to see how opposition coaches adjust prior to his team's first match against the Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday.

Teams don't have to announce their playing XIs until after the toss this year and can name four players as substitutes and can use one as an Impact Player during a match.

"I like what they (tournament organisers) are trying to do by trying to get more involvement in the game and get different players involved in the game and I am interested to see how it works,” Ponting said.

“Different teams are going to use the impact player in different ways and I am really intrigued to see how that will work.

“Let's wait and see. It's a nice innovation and it's definitely going to give a lot more work to the coaches once the game starts.

"I mean, normally as a coach, once the game is started, there's not much you can do to influence the outcome of the game. But with this. I think there's some significant ways that you can tactically influence the game.

"I know the captain's the only one that can activate the impact player but the coaches will be doing most of the thinking on the sideline and passing information to the captain.”

SuperSport previously held broadcast rights to the IPL. Discussions with the rights holder have unfortunately been unsuccessful and SuperSport will therefore not broadcast the IPL as of this year’s edition.

The Indian Premier League on Thursday uploaded a couple of pictures of the team captains standing in front of the trophy ahead of the 16th edition that kicks off on March 31 in Ahmedabad. It is to note that nine out of the ten captains were present in the picture that was shot at the Narendra Modi Stadium, but Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma was an absentee.

I'm absolutely certain that with the 'Impact Player' Rule and to some extent the "playing XI to be announced after the toss" Rule, we will see more one sided games in this edition of IPL than ever before.

The impact player rule will further strengthen the position of the team which is on top in the game and reduce the chances of a turn around. The team behind will often use this 'impact player' only for damage control.

For example at 100/4 (11) chasing, say, 170, you'd say a wicket or two can expose the lower order and the game can change, but with an additional batter to come, this makes the equation very easy.

Similarly in first innings a team at 125/2 will not need any additional batters as they are comfortably placed, they can post a huge score and further strengthen their chances of winning by adding an extra bowler when they come on to field. While the team struggling might either add a bowler in the 1st innings itself for damage control or will continue to leak runs and hope that later an additional batter come somehow make a difference which will be difficult against 5-6 proper bowlers.

That excitement of targeting the weak 5th bowling option or a vulnerable middle/lower order will be gone.

Similarly even the Toss rule can help the team winning the toss to further strengthen their position by selecting a team that suits their decision while the team losing the toss will against select a team for damage control knowing they've already lost the toss. Again the excitement of selecting a team without knowing what you will do will go missing.

Last but not the least, the DRS review for wides and no balls has the potential to drag a T20 match for 5 hours. As it is, none of the IPL games finish even within 4hrs, when ideally a T20 game should last for 3.5 hrs at max.

As everyone was excited for the opening match of the IPL 2023 between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings, the weather in Ahmedabad changed for the worse.

Just as everyone was excited for the opening match of the IPL 2023 between defending champions Gujarat Titans and four-time winners Chennai Super Kings on Friday, the weather in Ahmedabad changed for the worse. On the eve of the match, the skies opened up lash the city with some heavy rainfall, accompanied by a storm. Angry, dark rain clouds gathered over the city and what started off as a drizzle enough to call off the practice sessions of both teams, it soon turned into a heavy rainfall.

Although rain played a role in bringing the temperature down by six degrees not only in Ahmedabad but in several other parts of the state, it did cast a doubt over whether the IPL 2023 opener between CSK and GT go as per plan. Thankfully, the forecast for Friday evening is nothing like Thursday, so far with AccuWeather showing 0 percent chances of precipitation.

Having said that, the nature of unexpected rains across the northern and western parts of the country, it cannot be counted out, but as of now things look just fine. On Friday, Ahmedabad will witness a maximum temperature of 33 degree during the day, which will dip to 23 between evening and night. Besides, unlike Thursday, the chances of thunderstorm too have crawled back to 0 percent, which means we are all set for the highly-anticipated IPL opener.

Actually that was a good move.. in tight matches
those 1 extra ball (or not) can be reason behind the winning and losing.. unlike lbw/caught behind captain won't call it by intuition..

Supporting RR & DC this year too..

Both have good chance this year. Impact player helps RR with balance this time.

I support MI and we aren't looking too good. Just one decent spinners and No Bumrah. Rohit, Ishan and SKY out of form:(

At least we won WPL:)

Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians have announced the replacements for two of their marquee players -- Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah. While Pant has been replaced by Abhishek Porel in Delhi, Sandeep Warrier has come in place of Bumrah in the Mumbai Indians squad for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season. While the fate of the two players was known for a while, both MI and DC took their time in evaluating capable replacements for the player and announced the names of the newcomers on the day the IPL 2023 season is to kick off.

Looks like a serious injury for Kane Williamson, lad left all NZ international commitments for this and now gets seriously injured in the very first game.
