Saw the question being asked on twitter by a Pakistani lady yesterday and the poll result was about 50-50.

Indians generally tend to be jingoistic when it comes to Pakistanis but today I saw a lot of positive reaction for Arshad Nadeem qualifying for the final in the Olympics. So I was suddenly left wondering if the rivalry in sports was limited just to cricket.

Everyone knows that both the two countries have a bitter rivalry in cricket and therefore rooting for the other's defeat is not really surprising. But the topic of the thread is not about cricket.

The question is do Indians and Pakistanis cheer their rival country in the Olympics/Asian games/Commonwealth games for a medal, particularly if their own nation is not competing for that medal?

Just honest answers only. No fake aman ki asha answers and no trolling too.

Also would be great if the mods add a poll.

No I never ever support India at anything. That said abusing them is not in my genes either.

Coming from you, this is a silly question streety. I hope you are not trying to troll here.

We all know that India will never cheer for Pakistan in anything. Pakistan will cheer India only if it suits their interest, like in the last cricket WC when they wanted England to lose to India so they could get into the semis.

It's enough if the two don't keep going for each other's necks.

Yeah like the above poster said will only very reluctantly support India if it benefits Pak. If it means Pak can possibly go further in any tournament. 9/10 both Pak and India would happily lose a match if it stops the other from progressing.

Its a different situation with Nadeem. The Indian guy had already qualified and we got a chance to look at a Pakistani trying to make it as well to join him.

If there was just the Pakistani player with a chance to win, then I dont think the support would have been there as overwhelmingly as it was.

I understand the bitter Indo Pak rivalry but the results of the poll below from Pakistanis and general positive reaction from Indians for Arshad Nadeem's qualification (or even for Talha Talib) had me wondering if the bitter rivalry is just limited to cricket or it extends beyond cricket too.

I would rather support the devil then support India. Just the thought off supporting India at anything makes by stomach do summersaults as if I am gonna be sick. I would much rather support Man Utd against Liverpool then do India against anyone this is how much I love them. Do not believe in poll's in which only a very few mislead people take part in.

Damn if it means a diehard fan of Liverpool would rather support Manchester United, it really means something:yk

Nope never never.I will never support India.

Indians most Hindus especially northern indian Hindus hate Muslims so much.I have encountered it personally.

I was hoping india to come home empty handed but now they have won 2-3 medals it's not the ideal situation for me.

To be honest I have many Indian pal's and love watching old Indian film's but can never support them at anything. Weird but just the way it is:sunhappy I guess it's the same from the Indian perspective just replace the film's with our drama's.

Problem is many politicians , diplomats and military generals think likewise ( from both sides ) - 1 reason there is little chance for peace anytime soon

Imran Khan regularly attended Bollywood parties & conclaves in India in the past and now he rants about India non stop on twitter. Narendra Modi visits Pakistan to attend Nawaz Sharif's birthday party but now keeps ranting non stop against Pakistan at election rallies

As a first step we have to change our mentality from this state of permanent hostility

I always love a rags to riches tale so I never begrudge an Indian win in events like the Olympics. The subcontinent is a very tough place for poor people and there is little sporting infrastructure. For someone to make it to the Olympics against all the odds and win a medal( in a proper sport) is an incredible feat so I would definitely be happy if an Indian done so.

Never. Pakistan is the enemy.
Would not want even their U-11 to win so that is that.
Arch Rival for a reason.

You got to understand that the Indo-Pak relationship was much better during IK's youth back in the 1970's and 1980's. If he was young today would never be able to date a Zeenat Aman or Rekha so openly.

Today when he is a PM the relationship is much more hostile. He rightfully attacked Nawaz for inviting Modi to a personal event, a man who is openly a Pak hater making all kinds of threats in every speech. I also remember how furious the RSS people were during Musharraf's visit after Kargil.

RSS first and foremost needs to accept that Pakistan is a reality.

I don't mind supporting Pakistan if they have contenders.

International sport is merit based.

never, but both teams are so bad at olympics given their population itd be nice if there was some indo pak rivalry in something other than cricket.

Leaders should not think like petty individuals. They should be thinking for a better future

Unfortunately now both India & Pakistan have petty leaders at the helm who love ranting against each other to score political brownie points with domestic voters & stoke more hate & tension between the nations

:)) to be fair winning 4 medals (so far) and that too 0 gold would have been a bummer for me as well given how well our athletes have performed in previous events before the Olympics.

However posts like these make it sweeter.

I do appreciate your honesty though. Kudos.

I have never cheered for India at the Olympics, or any other sport for that matter, in my life. If their was an Indian Muslim competing in a individual competition, who had not made anti-Pakistan remarks, then thats the only scenario I can see myself rooting for India.

No I would never cheer for any Indian Muslim either even if they made pro-Pak comments. They are still Indian a country we have fought many wars with. No Indian Muslim does Pakistan or it's people any favours by speaking or thinking well about us. We don't ask them to keep one leg in both camps besides they or their forefathers made the choice during independence. Things are much easier with Indian non Muslim's then they are with their Muslim's.

On a related topic, I did stop at a Subway to get a couple of subs recently. The 2 guys preparing the subs were speaking among themselves in Hindi/Urdu so I asked them if they were from India. They said no, they were from Pakistan. As they looked like UPites rather than Punjabis, I next asked if they were from Karachi? Yes. Next question, were they Mohajirs? Yes again!

I gave them double the tip I usually give, so I guess I am favorably disposed towards to people from the subcontinent, whether from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal etc. :)

Nah, the day that happens cats will fly. It's like asking an Irishman if he roots for England or asking a Korean if he roots for Japan or asking a Mexican if he roots for El Salvador.

I am mostly indifferent but love underdog stories irrespective of national background. Since this is Olympics, we see many underdog stories from poor sporting countries which includes Pakistan. So unless the Pakistani is pitted against an Indian, I support the Pakistani athlete against the international field.

Only time supported Pakistan when Shoaib Akhtar was nailing those 160kmph thunderbolts. Man miss those days, what charisma he had.
