What's new

England beat Bangladesh by 21 runs in the first ODI

Fantastic spell from Adil Rashid, his variations are superb. Can go for a few but he's quality in this format, adjusts quiet well and seems to be one step ahead of the batsman

Actually, more than choke, it was always on the card. I thought the target was 20 more, but Sakib played exceptionally to bring in this situation. To me, still the turning point was Mushi's dismissal - you can't lob to mid wicket with 170 needed at just about 6.2/over, but already 3 down.

Always been meaning to ask you why mushfiq is in this team still? He's not dynamic and only plays the slog sweep. He was a good player in a minnow side but this is not a minnow side anymore. I think Bangladesh are just keeping him in the team because of his past contributions. He doesn't deserve to get in this batting line up at all. Isn't anamul a keeper too?

Joint MOTM for me for Ball and Rashid. Equally clutch. What do you think? HitWicket MMHS

The match is not over yet, but I would have given it to Butler. He added that 20 extra.

Rashid is bowling amazingly. Very surprised because in the past he hasn't impressed me much

Much better than Yasir has ever done in one days

I'd say it took him a while to peak and after some quality seasons for Yorkshire over the past couple of years came in to his own, has been fairly decent in limited overs but spinners tend to peak a bit late but he's really stamping his authority in the limited over formats now. Will get better with more experience in Tests

Well played England - great fight back. It was just out of reach but Sakib & Imrul made it almost there.

Back to work boys.

but I would still not forget their choke against India in the T20 WC. They need to believe in themselves. really sstruggling to finish off games.

When shakib got out i thought they will choke. The worst nightmare came true. Broken heart. This chance never gonna return.

Epic choke...still can't top the 2 for 3 balls choke in WT20 though :)) but good effort in trying to get close

Bangladesh is such a solid unit.

They are really really good.

Great effort fellas. A bit disappointed that you couldn't win.

England have been quality since WC 2015.

Sad this should had been done for Bangla they messed it up,they play in BPL in front of crowds and still messed this chase,no excuse at all,Shakib did well,Kayes needs to toughen up (although a good knock).

That batting order of Mahmood at 4 could be costly. In chase, always senior players should bat at 6 & 7.

Yes and its so weird to see them do same mistake again, wonder if he is asking them for that position?

Not surprised. These collapses have been happening all throughout the year. Bangladesh were on cruise control until the loss of Shakib's wicket. Batsman from 7-11 can't even hold a bat let alone bat. Tail is too weak. How can you exclude Nasir who is known for finishing games? Management is clueless. Fielding was also the difference between the sides. Great game of Cricket, and could've gone either way to be honest, and in the end, England were the deserved victors.

You're wrong - Bangladesh had more than covered the total by the last 10 overs and even then, in the last 5 overs they just needed a run a ball to win. Clearly the total was within sight, it was losing 6 wickets for 17 runs that cost Bangladesh the match which was partially because of choking but also because of fantastic partnership bowling between Jack Ball and Adil Rashid.

We were always 1 wicket away from defeat. You can check my post at the start - 280 was the margin. Today Sakib played an exceptional innings, but for last 50 runs, Imrul was a dummy. I called this when Mushi threw his wicket. In a chase of 300+, these things can happen - best is to finish the match by the set players. Ball & Adil hardly bowled un-playable balls.

Today's MoM was also wrong - best player of the match was Sakib, who didn't deserve as he couldn't finish the game. It was that extra 25 by Butler that was the difference. Had the target been 330, many other bowlers could have won it; had it been 280 - Adil or Ball won't have done any thing. The critical factor was last 4 overs of English innings.

It was a very good match as it swung one way then the next.

At the interval I thought 300 was too much for Bangladesh but they made a good fist of it despite losing regular wickets as they kept up with the run rate.

In the end Bangladesh though should feel bitterly disappointed - at 270/4 they threw it away literally when all it required was to take the foot off the gas and just play sensibly till the 46/47th over then go for big shots, if required.

Should have won this game easy with the position they were in.

Bangladesh did the same thing Afghanistan did in first ODI. I think Shakib was just getting tired at the end and wanted to finish the game in Lala style.

Bangladesh were 271-4, how can you say that 280 was the limit that they were going to score ? If you're saying that you expected them to collapse then Bangladesh are a garbage team IMO not even SA fail in a random bilateral match.

Besides that you said 280 was the limit, they actually made 288 which is much higher. Ball and Rashid may not have bowled many unplayable balls I don't know, but they certainly bowled tightly in their final spells and the combination of the pressure they put on the batsmen and the batsmen choking was the cause of the win. If you're always one wicket from defeat then does that mean the Bangladeshi tail starts at no 6 ?

Sure Shakib played a blinder, but the fact is that Bangladesh needed something like 39 off 50 balls with 6 wickets in hand - Bangladesh were strong favourites at that point and should have won, they just needed to milk singles but they choked under the pressure of finally beating a top team in good for albeit with half it's side missing.
