I'd wait before jumping into conclusions. Flat pitch, sad bowling attack, sunshine. He survived one good testing spell, but still a long way to go. The 5 match series will give us a good indication..
Yeah i know but after Kohli went India could have collapsed with inexperienced guys like Rahane and Jadeja to come. Yeah it has been a flat pitch but a good knock nonetheless. Could be his first 100 outside India

lol some players need more convincing than the others...Pressure situation...England bowling well, two of our best players back in the pavilion, the guy holds one end up and still nothing to right home about? Obviously he is going to fail in the 5 match series...New ball is going to swing and he is going to nick one...that doesn't mean that he is not good...Better players have failed in swinging conditions...Give credit where due, under the circumstances this is a fantastic innings for India.

Agreed mate. Full marks to Vijay! But I'd wait before calling him a 'reliable' batsman.. Hope you understand my point here..

Only Pujara, Kohli and to certain extent Rahane are reliable in Indian line up at the moment..

I agree but currently taking into account the 3 series we have played with this lineup, I would call only Kohli and Rahane as the reliable batsmen...Pujara for me had a great series in SA, in NZ struggled to get going after spending lots of time in the middle...Here again he has gotten out after a good start albeit to a brilliant catch....Pujara too needs some convincing overseas along with Vijay and the rest....Rahane for me has been India's best player across the three overseas series.

Retrospectively, I agree with you. Played some good innings and hardly ever failed to impress..

One thing about the Indian batting line-up is that the stroke-play of almost all top and middle order batsmen is easy on the eyes. Until you get to Dhoni that is :D

Just a matter of time before Pujara converts his starts.

The ball he got today was a beauty. So was the catch.

It was a cruel way to get out after doing all the hardwork.

Kudos to Anderson and Bell.

Well 300 seems a long way away now...If England can get Vijay, they can bowl us out under 250...which will be fantastic on this wicket.

270-4 will be the best India can hope for.. I'm sure we'd be 230/8 at the end of day's play

If Indians are struggling to hit Plunkett, imagine them against Johnson

14 more overs for new ball.. I'd ask them to make most of these overs before Anderson and Broad come back and normalcy restores again

As England and SA proved recently Johnson isn't that easy to play. Indian batting will also struggle but need to find a way to play him. England played him miserably and SA struggled too and both are supposed to be good players of pace bowling. So not sure we should be expecting miracles from subcontinent teams in Australia.

I was hoping that VJ gets out so that i can watch Kohli n Pujara bat, what irony we are 4 down with our best 3 bats back in the pavilion :)))

Coming out respectably is the thing I'm looking at. England were sh*t. But South Africa showed character. You can challenge guys like those only with your technique + grit. Plunkett isn't bowling too bad either, but Johnson is at a next level.

Dhoni playing the right way, but why so much shuffling?! Play normally man..

Dhoni is really ugly to watch compared to the rest of Indias top order

Well played VJ- hopefully this is will be his second coming- and cement that RH opening slot for a good few years....

Dhoni walking the talk. Even on a harder track, he should have the same approach because his defence is never going to help him see off tough spells.

Michael Holding and David Gower tearing into the BCCI and ICC on the issue of DRS... bold stuff

Was there any decision which went against England in this innings? Everyone knows BCCI's stand about DRS and it is not a new thing...Not sure why they keep talking about it every time....How much every they bash BCCI, they are not going to change their stance on it. I don't agree with the BCCI but what are you going to do?

Just turned on the TV. Murali Vijay. Respect. The pitch seems a bit sub-continental though?

The pitch is same as how it was during SL series...Check Broad's interview on cricinfo.

With the passage of time, everybody well used to DRS and every other country using it in their series, it does become more and more ridiculous not to be using it. Which means for the Sky viewers who are used to seeing it in every series other than against India, it is definitely an issue to discuss. However I didn't think a broadcaster would be so directly outspoken about the BCCI and ICC.

It's only 'not a new thing' for Indian fans, who never see it.

This pitch may seem easy (from a distance) but those who had watched Murali Vijay's century would know how incredibly hard work it was.

Anyways its not a green track or even a very sporting track.

We will know what's what once England bat.

Agreed. Additionally, he had to absorb enormous pressure when Anderson and Broad made massive inroads by removing Pujara and Kohli in succession.. They were getting massive reverse swing

Yep.

Murali Vijay played a gem.

Pujara, Rahane and Dhoni with extremely valuable contributions.

Eng needs to get few wickets with the new ball tomorrow. They kind of allowed Indians to get out of jail when they were 4 down with only 160-170 runs.

Much opening better day in comparison to last tour when Zaheer got injured after few over and Dhoni had to bowl few overs later in the day.

Good start to the tour for India. They'll be the happier side I reckon after the first day.

It will be interesting to see how Indian bowlers bowl on this wicket. I suspect Jadeja having a great say in this test match with the ball. This looks like an ideal wicket for his type of bowling...England may have missed a trick by not picking a spinner but then again they need to have a good spinner to play against India.

England v India | 1st Investec Test | July 9-13, 2014 | Nottingham | Day 2

Here's the card after Day 1. Can India push on with the bat and get themselves in the driver's seat? Or will Engerlund stage a recovery with the ball?

Deja vu for me! 1st day vs South Africa, last series, India ended on 255-5 on a relatively tough Jo'burg pitch. We were all out for 280 then....

As the cliche goes - the first hour would be crucial. If English bowlers peg us back in the first hour, the innings can be restricted to around 330. If Dhoni and Vijay negotiate the first hour successfully, I expect us to get close to 400.

I would say yesterday was England's by a nose until MS intervened.

Well done to Vijay, and to Broad for being so economical on that road.

Plunkett should be coming over the wicket and pitching it up, not this round-the-wicket chin music.

People of India. We wish to apologise for holding you back when we colonised your country. To try and make up for it we have instructed the groundstaff at the five test grounds to produce wickets that are the same as ones you play on at home.

We really are sorry for the British Empire.

Enjoy!

You might have ruled us for over 200 years but you didnt expect us to follow you all the way back and take off all your jobs....

:nasser

Eng bats well > Excellent batting by Eng
Opposition bats well > The wicket is flat nothing in it for the quicks
Eng bowls well > Brilliant bowling by Eng
Opposition bowls well > Eng batsmen having a bad day

England zindabad. Hopefully India will be all out by the time they get to 300.

Vijay's double hundred, Dhoni's 100, Binny's and Jadeja's fifties waiting for us..

Stokes at 8 and Broad at 9. As if the Indian bowling needed a further challenge to bowl the opposition out!
