Pakistan's shaky start to the tour saw them being bundled out for 141 in the first ODI, chased down by England with nine wickets to spare inside 22 overs.

Overview

England v Pakistan, 2nd ODI
Lord’s, London
10 July, 11:00 am local

Pakistan’s dependency over the top-order trio of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman has remained exposed lately if the three fail to deliver, especially all at once. For the middle-order to reach stability and consistency, Pakistan have had to make changes to find the right balance.

Whereas, England have made use of what resources are available to them. Ben Stokes returning to international action after recovering from injury and being handed the captaincy has seen the flourish of Stokes, the leader.

With still 20 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League points up for grabs, Pakistan would want to ensure they obtain them and rise up to the second position in the standings, right behind England who currently are at the top with 75 points.

Remember the last time

The new-look England side was able to group together in unprecedented circumstances and still deliver to the hosts’ white-ball prowess. England registered a comprehensive nine-wicket win over Pakistan thanks to Saqib Mahmood’s early exploits with the ball as he returned with 4/42.

The visitors were bundled out in Cardiff for just 141 runs in the 36th over after which unbeaten fifties from Dawid Malan (68*) and Zak Crawley (58*) helped England finish the chase in the 22nd over.

What they said

Babar Azam (Pakistan Captain): “We are working on our lower middle-order. We try to give them confidence. The effort is centred around giving them the space to let them apply their game on the field and the more experience they will accumulate, they will grow more in confidence.“

Saqib Mahmood: “The message we’ve had and something (Ben) Stokes reiterated after training was that yes it is weird circumstances but at this given time, everyone here deserves their place and everyone here is the best player for that position they’re in.”

Guys in and around London keep updating about the current weather.

Extremely overcast here in north london.
I'm around 6-8 miles from Lords.

However my app now shows just cloudy all day long whereas yesterday it said 70pct chance of rain pretty much all day.

As of now it's not raining and we could get a full game

Hopefully sense prevails and Faheem is dropped.

Since 2019, he has played in 13 ODIs and taken 5 wickets in those games, with a bowling average excess of 75.

In those 13 games, he has scored just 103 runs, a batting average equivalent to that of a tailender.

Our bowling attack should be Shaheen, Hasnain, Haris and Hasan due to a lack of other options.

Usman Shinwari should have been considered for a tour this long, because we don't have many spare fast bowlers.

weather is gloomy, might be a reduced over affair today. let's hope Pakistan actually show up

Shouldnt be a problem starting the game on time from what i m hearing. Forecast has definitely changed from what it showed in the weather forecasting channels yesterday

I think nawaz and qadir should play in place of faheem and shadab. They are proper spinners and new english batsmen will probably struggle against some quality spin.
Moreover Lord's does assist spinners a bit.
And a new ball pair of shaheen and hasnain followed by hassan with the older ball

Do we realistically think that Misbah will change things up after just one game? Usually he sticks with the same team.

Pakistan has won 4 out of their last 5 ODIs at Lords.

Overall record won 6 lost 7.

Babar, Rizwan and Fakhar at least two of them need to fire big time. Rest of the batting lineup appears to be just making up the numbers. Hopefully a good contest this time around.

It's raining at Lords right now.

I'm at the ground, it's hardly raining. It's a few feather drops.

I see no reason why they would delay.

Because it’s cricket. The worst administrated sport ever. We need to kick out all these old men running the sport. No reason to delay the toss here at all

Rizwan has been disappointing in ODIs since his comeback, failing to produce anything of note in the last 7 innings. His keeping has been excellent, but that alone won't get him a place on the team. This may be his last series to produce something of note with the bat, otherwise, we need to find better options.

Fakhar, Babar, and Imam have to step up. With some overcast conditions, Fakhar and Imam have to provide us with a solid foundation, even if they take their time to get settled. I'd rather take 40 runs from the powerplay with no wickets lost than sit at 60 or 70 with 2-3 wickets down.

Then comes the bigger issue: Shadab Khan. Whilst I appreciate that he can produce helpful knocks such as the one he did in the previous game, that alone doesn't fix his spin bowling. His downfall arguably started in that Sri Lanka tour of Pakistan, where he was taken to the cleaners against a third-class Sri Lankan side on a pitch that was spinning quite well. Of course, there were mistakes in that series from fielders which costed him a few deserving wickets, but his bowling form spiralled from that point onwards. For a leg-spinner, there are two major ingredients for success; consistency and confidence. The consistency applies in a variety of places, being able to pitch the ball in good places, but also consistently repeating the bowling action. Though he's a leg-spinner, his action resembles that of an off-spinner more, characterized by the shorter run-up and flatter trajectory. The issue actually arises from the fact that he doesn't put enough energy in the delivery of the ball because of the angle at which his body turns upon release. The best white-ball leg-spinners explode through the crease rather than slow down, giving them the momentum to bowl flatter but allowing them to get more revolutions on the ball.

The fact that his action resembles that of an off-spinner more is perhaps why he relies on his googly so often, because it feels natural from that angle. You compare him to Usman Qadir, and see that Qadir's body will naturally go towards the off-side when delivering the leg-break, whereas Shadab's body remains stationary and it's mostly his arms doing the work.

At the age of 22, Shadab has a very bright future, but his action needs remodelling and he needs to go into domestic cricket.

Right now, he will need to get as much confidence in his bowling as possible. Now is the time to take wickets, and he needs to take them quickly. There is a lot of potential in him, but right now, he needs to step up as a bowler.

Update:

11.15 toss
11.30 start

30 mins of extra time lost.

Can someone explain to me what the hell happened in the 1st ODI? Did we just lose to England B? I have been out of the loop for a while and come back to this disaster.

The worrying thing is our tail starts at 5. We need the top 4 to fire or at least 2 of them otherwise we will always be dismissed for a low score.

Can someone please explain to me how does Faheem Ashraf justify his place in the team? I don’t understand

If we loose the toss English bowlers will eat us alive. Expecting another low scoring match.

Less good news from Lord's. The covers are back on and that likely means the 11.15am toss will be delayed...

The toss has been delayed again.

I would rather go with Hasnain to open up with Shaheen. Rauf and Hasan cant do well with new ball

It's hardly raining. If this is the threshold for rain, then I don't think we'll be seeing any cricket until 2 or 3 at the earliest.

Good thing this sport is only played seriously by 8 countries. It’s awful

Lol they plan for a toss not instantly but after 30 minutes and rain comes in by then.

Too risky to do the toss while there’s a light bit of drizzle. One of the captains could slip and get injured while walking down to the middle.

It is still raining, not particularly hard but enough to prevent the toss taking place and play getting underway.

Bored waiting for the game to begin. Pakistan better put up a better performance today for their fans who invest so much time and energy to watch them

Some good news from Lord's for cricket fans

(All local times)

12:10 Toss
12.30 Game Start

Match is reduced to 47 overs a side

Should draft Azam Khan in - will be rain expected for the next few hours. Likely to end up with 20/30 over game.

Its houseful by the looks of it. Hopefully weather allows for a result and its a good match of cricket.

Good bolwing conditions but an attack that don't swing or seam the ball.

Probably the worst type of attack for these type of conditions

Remember the hate Afridi used to get, even though he averaged mid 20’s with bat and low 30’s with the ball. Faheem doesn’t get half the hate and criticism that Afridi would get.

Hopefully this is Faheem last series, I’d rather have Imad and Shadab paired together.

Good decision to bowl . Rain is predicted until 3pm so could be on and off still.

Nasser Hussain on Pakistan: "It's a very good seam bowling outfit. But, for me, it just looks like they're one batter short. Rizwan is a very good cricketer, but I'd like to see him at number five with four front-line batters ahead of him."

It's not a good seam attack. It's an attack that suited to low bounce wickets in the subcontinent

Need Shaheen to rip through their top order like England did to ours last match
