What's new

England v South Africa l 3rd Test l Edgbaston l 30/7/08 to 03/08/2008

england were trying to claim a catch where ball clearly bounced before it went into strauss hand.

Atherton in the commentary box was making out that it is difficult to judge whether the ball had bounced, even though it was very clear the ball had bounced

McKenzie 72 out LBW Flintoff. Great decision by Aleem Dar :125:
SA 135-4 after 39 overs - trail by 96

Flintoff has 200 test wickets now (69th test)

Flintoff's got the fewest five-wicket hauls of any bowler to get 200 wickets, with two. The next two closest bowlers are Kallis (4) and Courtney Walsh (5). This cric-info brought to you by Gnasher McStattan and Statsguru's creator Travis Basevi. Thanks for that, chaps

S.A less than 50 behind now with 4 wickets down....Kallis and Prince looking solid......innings defeat looming for England ?

Effectively 3 wickets as one of the 4 was Paul Harris

True. Still De Villiers and Boucher to come. I expect at least a 150 lead now.

Sounds about right - Kallis is due for a hundred; Prince and de Villiers are in prime form and Boucher is always useful. England are up against it with none of their bowlers looking too dangerous (bowled OK at times but they haven't really looked like running through SA)

They look very medoicre to say the least. I'm sitting here bored out of my skull , actually hoping for S.A wickets to bring some excitement to the game/series..

:) I wouldn't get too cocky my friend...for sure SA are dominating England in this series but arrogance can breed complacency sometimes...not that the SA bats look like getting complacent

England haven't come to the party. The series has been far too one sided to be entertaining. Since the first test S.A have dominated every single session of the series.

Flintoff to Kallis. Big LBW appeal and not given

66.5 Flintoff to Kallis, no run, another fast yorker, hits the toe and that's plumb. Surely. No! My word - Kallis has escaped there. Flintoff is furious

Flintoff is absolutely raging. It's very rare you see him lose his cool, and he's asking Aleem Dar about it - he just cannot believe it. Time to cool down, I think...and he's off to deep square leg

Kallis 64 bowled by Flintoff - another yorker
SA 226-5 after 68.4 overs - trails by 5 runs

Brilliant little spell from Flintoff - back to his best and he has made a top class batsman in Kallis look like a tail-ender. Reminded me a bit of his over to Ponting (and Langer) in the Ashes at Edgbaston.

What did I tell you saffer...never a good idea to get too ahead of yourself!

72.4 Flintoff to de Villiers, OUT, got him, Flintoff's on fire here! An 88.4mph bouncer which lures de Villiers into a hook, but he top-edges a skier above Sidebottom at fine-leg. Steadying himself, he takes it comfortably and England are right back in this match
AB de Villiers c Sidebottom b Flintoff 5 (17b 1x4 0x6) SR: 29.41

SA 247-6 after 74 overs - lead of 16 runs
17 overs left today

bad light stops play. Probably end of day
Prince 37(92) - Boucher 11(13)
SA 256-6 after 76 overs - lead by 25 runs

England = hopeless except for Flintoff

But they're fighting back well against South Africa though...and saffer was saying earlier that SA will be quietly confident of putting one across the Aussies...?

doesnt matter...great performance from drunkoff but all SA need is a 150 lead...and if the weather is sunny 2moro as it seems to be and boucher and prince get a partnership, with the lower order throwing the bat england will still lose....good stuff from drinkaloff today though..great yorker!!

good bowler who loves himself too much, whenever he takes a wickets he thinks he is the king $h!T

i think the aussies would have done their homework on him and they will bring him back down to earth

I loved the evening session. One thing that hasnt been picked up on is who Flintoff was actually bowling to. Kallis, the one player who could claim to be a better all-rounder in this generation than Flintoff. An amazing contest.
Personally I think you cannot choose, Kallis is more effective and consistent while Flintoff is more hot and cold, but can be sensational. The irresistable force of Flintoff vs. the immovable object Kallis, to use an old line. Kallis has actually been crap in this series, it was a lucky 60 today. The England bowlers seem to know how to bowl at him, just got to work out everyone else as those are the players giving us the problems!

As for the match, bowl them out for 300 and have a decent chance of winning the game, but if they get to 400, lose the game. Pretty simple, could go either way. Could turn out to be another England-SA classic, each series between the teams in the modern era usually has featured at least one.

England has to try and get SA all out by 300 and the match is still on. 350+ by SA which doesn't look likey and match is for England to save and will be remarkable if they do. Listening to the commentary what strikes me the most is that England bowlers for most part are not bowling good and not making the batsmen play the ball. Something they have to fix if they want to win

the batsmen were facing bad light and no sightscreen...don't get over excited...S.A still way ahead in this game.

Why not ?

Because we are 20 runs ahead with 6 wickets down we need to think we can't bat them ?

wow.....give it all a re-think...

Brilliant stuff from Flintoff today with the ball. England need one huge session tomorrow and need to knock over boucher and prince early to have a chance of putting pressure back on south africa.

well england will only put pressure on saffies if they manage po post a very high score, the saffies are in control, taking early wickets would help england but that will not put any pressure on saffies as they have got a lead...

No doubt that England have got themselves somewhat into the game. However South Africa still have the advantage and unless the English batsmen suddenly all find form and the South African bwlers suddenly lose it , it's England with all the worries for now.

It was good cricket yesterday afetrnoon though. Lots of chat and needle. That's more like it.

Sidebottom got Prince for 39 earlier

Currently 276/7

Apparently "The Nudge" dropped Boucher.

So The Nudge has made 4 runs in this game, bowled 2 overs for 12 and dropped 2 catches :dna

Monty dropped a sitter but Vaughan took a brilliant catch

314 all out, 83 run lead

And Vorn pushed very hard for his inclusion. Oh dearie dear Vorny!

Nasser calling Aleem Dar's decision "ridiculous". As if there are any better umpires in the world (except Taufel perhaps) than Dar. Whatever, Nasser.

Vaughan is out and now England are reeling with still 44 runs behind.

The deficit now is only 13. England 70/2 with 59 overs left in today's play.

Strauss goes Just as England looked like building a good partnership.

if SA had a quality spinner along with these pace men they would be unstopable and would crush england as england are known to be poor players of spin

if the weather holds out for the next couple of days, i see another SA victory unless the england middle/lower order can set a total of 250/300

Collingwood is woefully out of form, I don't know why he is in a team. He is a sitting wicket for South Africa.

Well, according to Michael Vaughan, "he's a good bloke to have in the dressing room" (or something to that effect)

Yeah, I forget they are good mates.

Ting Ting Ting!!! Bell out ct off Ntini
Eng 104-4 after 30.1 overs - lead by 21

Ah, marvellous. Andre Nel's back into the attack. I do enjoy watching Gunther. In an era dominated by media-savvy players, vomiting clichés left right and centre, it's a relief to have someone so utterly bonkers, not to mention a fine bowler.

Gunther's fuming with himself, or with life in general. Perhaps the credit crunch has caught up with him and he can't shake off its growling grip

Collingwood has a vein on his neck which is only apparent when he's batting. Right now, it looks like a small branch from a tree. He's pumped

Collingwood 25* - That's Collingwood's highest Test score of the season. Enough said.

Saffer, mate...if Nudgy boy and your most hated former South African KP carry on like this...you never know...

Is England's crowd-pleaser Paul Collingwood in good enough form to have played his trademark nudge round the corner yet? If so, South Africa could be in big trouble. It's a lethal shot that shreds and demoralises bowling attacks.

Morkel taken off after going for 32 runs in this 3 over spell
Pietersen 92 - Collingwood 49
Eng 216-4 after 52 overs - lead of 133

Fair's fair - I have criticized Nudge a lot but he has stood up to be counted under pressure today. Well played!

Pietersen 94 out ct at mid on off Harris
Eng 219-5 after 53.1 overs - lead of 136

Brainless batting - Alec Stewart on radio

53.1 Harris to Pietersen, OUT, Harris has got him! Pietersen's gone! Skipping down the pitch and going for the glory shot over the top, but he picks out long-on, and he swears black and blue while trudging back to the pavilion. He is absolutely apoplectic with rage - and understandably so. He might just have thrown the game away for England

streaker on ground and crowd makes noise :125:

More streaker info. "A quick handstand on the pitch, then hurtled out of the clutches of the stewards. Eventually collared near Andre Nel, who offered him his cap for modesty."

Flintoff 2 out ct at short leg off dangerman Harris

Eng 221-6 after 53.5 overs - lead of 138

A lead of 200 would make this game very intresting as S.A are prone to collapses chasing sometimes.
