England capitalized on Rishabh Pant’s injury during a tense opening day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford. Pant had contributed 37 runs in a vital partnership with Sai Sudharsan before a failed reverse sweep attempt off Chris Woakes struck him on the right foot. Despite receiving treatment, Pant was forced to retire hurt.

Sundharsan, recalled for this match, was punishing England for Jamie Smith’s earlier drop but eventually fell for 61, hooking Ben Stokes to long leg. India ended the day on 264-4, with uncertainty surrounding Pant’s availability for the rest of the innings or match.

Chasing a series-clinching victory, England benefited from skipper Ben Stokes’ decision to field first after winning his fourth straight toss. Under overcast skies and on a responsive pitch, India showed resilience—Yashasvi Jaiswal compiled a cautious 58, and KL Rahul added a typically composed 46.

England’s bowlers were initially ineffective with the new ball but improved post-lunch. Woakes earned a deserved breakthrough by dismissing Rahul, Liam Dawson struck in just his seventh delivery on his return to Test cricket after eight years, removing Jaiswal, and Stokes trapped Shubman Gill lbw after the Indian captain left a delivery.

Sudharsan, dropped on 20, rebuilt alongside Pant, whose injury proved to be a crucial—albeit unfortunate—turning point for England.

Pant's injury was entirely self-inflicted. Pure stupidity trying to reverse sweep such a full delivery off a pacer.

Pant is too talented a player to be batting like a clown. You can bat with controlled aggression without these bizarre shots, random bat throws and what have you.

Now the team suffers as a result.

England making this mistake again and again. You need to understand you can do this only if you have good bowlers, England do not have them.
Not only good bowlers it depends on batsmen too.eng have absolute ftbs apart from root to grond it out during tough conditions.so they doesn't want to take any risk.

Whenever a player plays reverse sweep against fast bowlers it is already pre planned, so it was not Pant's mistake but misfortune.

Pant will come back to bat tomorrow
He is a tough guy

Pant is better than Harry brook ever was
Brooks has outperformed him in every conditons. (Nz, pk and eng) main test will be aus and india for brook

Trying to reverse sweep a pacer is quite risky as Pant found out the hard way. It doesn't seem like he can bat further in this Test.

Pant is way better than Brook

England is brook’s home town so you would expect that and pant averages pretty close to what brooks does in this series anyway.

Pant doesn’t get to bash pak on concrete slabs

Brook is good on flat tracks but pant is better in every other condition.

Pant is an overrated clown. A better keeper bat then Dhoni in test but thats about it.

Jamie smith and Brooks are true talents in test cricket atm

All im saying is Brooks has outperformed him by miles in NZ, Pak, and they are atm somewhat equal in Eng.

That is all. Going by numbers atm.

He is not a proper batter. It is why he tries to be funky.

He is a modern day T20 hack. He tries to slog his way out of trouble.

Brook is a hack who cant even play on eng spicy surfaces .not even one good innings on tough pitches of India, wi, eng across the formats. Kept on sweeping with out even checking the length of the delivery on spin pitches.

Ridiculous shot from Pant... Totally unnecessary One... It might cost his team big time.

Pant’s injury was the reason England won in Lords and I think his injury in this game will likely lead to a series win result for England. He is a kind of player who puts the pressure back on opposition and he was doing exactly the same.

You lost cause of Brooks

Pant is comfortably better than Brooks and Jamie Smith both. Jamie Smith has done nothing as of now to be even compared with Pant except that he too is a keeper batter like him.

Pant is overrated in Test cricket? He has already done the unimaginable that Most players haven't done in their entire Test careers and he is still 27 year old . Pant can Play in any test team's as an pure batsman alone .
But again, you give your opinion only by looking at the scoreboard .

Yeah he scored just 61, amazing, you have been proven right.
61 is nothing in test especially after playing slower then molasses, anyone can achieve it by playing slow on dens, I'd be do it easily against this England attack.

Hit a 200 and I'll be impressed

Brooks is easily the best young talent in the world. Indians need to stop their obsession of being No 1.

Can't have it all. Dude avg 57 with 9 centuries and 12 50's.

Stokes looks like the most threatening bowler for England. Pushing Anderson into retirement not looking like a good decision.

You don't understand cricket... (OR it is just the normal Pakistani bias against Indian Players). He inflicts fear factor in opposition and takes the game away! That becomes crucial in any format (including tests). That's why guys like Hayden, Sehwag, etc, became successful in test cricket... Not that all these guys have solid defense needed for test cricket (otherwise they wouldn't survive & woundn't be consistent). Stokes the captain has confirmed that he fears Pant the most... Even in the last test, if Pant continued batting in 1st innings for 20 more overs, game would have completely gone out of England's hand! Pant has already won many tests, series for India...

Let Brooks take England to one WTC Finals (which is afterall played in their own den! They cannot qualify even for that!) Pant has taken us to 2 WTC Finals (and unfortunately couldn't play in 1 finals otherwise would have made impact against his favorite team Australia)

Jamie smith did nothing on pak turning tracks.pant always contributed on even worst pitches.

England will win wtc in 2027. That much i guarantee.

Also jokes aside you guys need to cool it with these weird metrics on Foreign batters and biased metrics on indian batters.

Brooks is a much better batter then KP in test cricket on Sena pitches. He will dominate bangaldesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka as well assuming no dustbowls are curated.

India is where he may struggle though due to lacking a defensive technique vs spin. We will see how he performs.

But dont over analyse. He is a terrific player and in this tour only Bumrah has troubled him, not the pitch itself like you guys are claiming. On current form he is > Root who atm i feel is playing conservatively for his standards this series.

Only indians cam compare a 42 avg batsmen to a 57 avg batter lol
Stats don't speak everything... He is riding on home Bazball pitches (more than 50% matches). Let Brook get a chance to play 5 test matches in India, his average will suffer... Then England will have to make an additional quick trip to Pakistan to inflate the averages of their batsmen! Pant doesn't get the luxury to play day in and day out on Bazball pitches OR Pakistani roads... (Otherwise he can score multiple tons like he did in this tour!) England could convert Root into Sachin with the aid of these pitches (othwerwise he wouldn't be reaching even Ponting)

Even in India we are been creating non-batting friendly pitches for some years now... I think time has come for even India to prepare super-flat (slow-turn) pitches in India... This can boost the confidence of our batsmen (good run at home will improve their confidence even when they play outside...) I think the time has come... (especially after that NZ whitewash where the expired oldies also got washed out)

And Pant averages 44+ not 42 at the moment...

Quote the > post and not this one.

I already answered. Am not going to repeat myself

Lol was going to ignore this until I saw the root comment.

Root avg 50+ in every country excluding dustbowls where he avg 45 and 47 vs pk and India Einstein.

Aus is the only place he has been poor. Cone up with a better excuse for root. Nowhere near Ponting lol.

Take accountability and admit India has contributed towards giving him 3000 runs not pitches. Its india's fault.

Wondering when & how did Pakistanis became such loyal supporters of English team & players  Maybe because their own team/players can't stand a competition with Indian players!
