What's new

England vs Pakistan | 3rd Test | Southampton | Aug 21-25, 2020 | Day 1

Amir has been a big loss for Pakistan. He was instrumental for keeping the side unbeaten in the last two tours of England.

Amir, Abbas and Shaheen >>> Naseem, Abbas and Shaheen

Naseem needs more domestic cricket because he just doesn't look threatening at all. His presence in the side has made Pakistan look like a bowling attack with just two pacers.

Funny how everyone was writing Yasir off before the series, and now he's been our best bowler of the series. I do hope to see some magic from Shaheen and Abbas in this test though.
Naseem is pretty much bowling like Wahab. Hasn't been able to setup a single batter.

Yasir looks much better with Mushy around. While his control is still lacking especially early on, he's been one of our most threatening bowlers in this series.

Yasir's last 4 overs or so (with a new ish ball and on day 1, session 1) have been quite brilliant!! With just a bit of luck, could have had another wicket . . Problem with him is his consistency . . if he can keep it up, he will be good today!

That’s first maiden of the morning session!!!! PAK loses heart the moment Captain loses toss - bowling first isn’t the worst thing here.

One maiden is just unacceptable with the new ball. Shows how bad the bowlers have been with their lines and lengths.

I think that last play & miss is the reason for his FC average. Good stroke player, but not likely to want to wait too long or want to play an ugly inning. So far he’s only really shown one gear.

Have observed the same. Whenever Yasir has touched his peak as a bowler Mushi was around. Though I would prefer lack of dependency incase he isnt around for the sake of Pakistan and for Yasir as well to reach that 300+ wickets mark.

Agreed, looked lost without Mushtaq. I guess the decision to not retain him was a masterstroke by Sethi right?

Pakistan haven't had much luck this morning! Could have easily had a couple more

Top stuff from Shaheen here. Just needs to be patient

A 1-0 defeat would be very flattering indeed, since this series had 3-0 England written all over it.

No it didnt. England barely won the first match, it was actually Pakistan which capitulated from a winning position and second match, it could go either way.

Haha Root not trying to late cut that one. He seems to be playing with the idea that idea that if one more falls, it could be trouble

Yasir has benefited from mushy , as for naseem he will learn from experience, wahab been a pathetic bowler through out his career in tests

Amir ruled himself out of contention to be fair. Again though, Misbah has a buddha or bacha selection policy.

You need two seasoned guys between the age of 22-30 as your new ball pair, with one of Shaheen and Naseem to develop at their own pace instead of overexposing them too early.

Instead Misbah and Waqar have put so much pressure on the two youngsters (to cover their own backs when we lose so they can say it's a young team still learning etc), already expecting them to win away series in Australia and England for us.

Not everyone to be honest - there are people who do understand the value of Yasir & understand cricket a bit as well. But yes, considering a bowling show by the cyborg version of Starc and the born agin Fred Truman, Yasir indeed is delivering above expectations of many here.

When I was watching Yasir in Aus, I never imagined that I would say this that when in his groove Yasir has been a treat to be watch in this series.

This is just beautiful from Shaheen. Starving Crawley of that vital single before lunch. Keep your control Shaheen, bowl it again and again.

Crawley is on 49 since I started watching ..... might wait there for another hour adding lunch. Ok, it needed a post from me ...

Crawley should terrific concentration once the boundaries dried up.

This little spell from Shaheen is a great manifestation of game awareness at this young age. Simply great stuff.

Would like to see this patience by other bowlers against other batsmen as well.

Good 50. Well navigated in the end.

Man do PAK need to think whether they have 4 or 3 bowlers in this game/series. They pulled the RR down a bit but next session is just so important. Trust Waqar to be clueless as always.

Other then few loose deliveries, a really good session of test cricket.

Pom’s session - 2 wickets was per but PAK conceded at least 15 runs more for 28 overs.

Don’t think so. Was decent but hardly terrific concentration. Threw his bat out twice. I feel he was only holding back because he was on 49, and less to do with the impending lunch break.

DAY 1 - LUNCH

ENG 91/2 (28.0), CRR: 3.25

Crawley 53* (80)
Root 10* (28)

Shaheen: 8 - 1 - 24 - 1
Yasir: 9 - 1 - 28 - 1

Min. Overs Remaining: 61.0

I would have played Curran as well. He is s very underrated cricketer, maybe due to his short stature and baby looks. But he brings more to the table than Archer.

Don't worry, this is last time Broad and Anderson are playing together in a test match. They are just waiting for Anderson to complete 600 wkts. He looks way past his prime.

The bowlers are young and they’ll make mistakes, getting tired of this drop them lark, young players need experience, they have raw talent and playing international cricket will help them, its the OAP’s like shafiq and azhar that need replacing!

Those who have watched, how has it been so far?

By the looks of the scorecard seems like it has been England's session as their run rate is good despite just the loss of 2 wickets.

Crawley likes to attack and put the bowlers off their line, but has the bowling been poor overall or good batting?

Need to strike early after lunch, else England are heading to 300. My money is on Abbas.

When listening to andrew strauss he puts me to sleep....what a slow roast pathetic drawl....any one else feel the same?

When they finally got a sort of dry wicket, they lost the toss lol.

Anyways, should do their best to keep England below 300 here.

It is refreshing listening to the ECB chairman, and England concerned commentators on how they see the ECB and it's role in growing and supporting the game. I also like that the Chairmen don't come in and wholesale changes happen. They allow for continuity with small changes over time.

True. Though English fans on Twitter are cursing the hell out of Graves for creating The Hundred.

Most relevant as a Pakistan fan is that he said he wants ICC to look at fairer revenue distribution.

Why don't they try Fawad Alam for a few overs? His left arm spin will give Pak a different angle.

Because if Fawad gets hammered Pakistan will be pounded into the ground. Pakistan is basically one 50+ partnership away from complete disintegration.

Abbas to start. Sun is out so English batsmen will want to cash in.

Fans need to relax it is not the end of the day yet. I have a feeling Pakistan will dismiss Eng for 250. Yasir is bowling well just need a good support from abbas and shaheen and naseem with tight bowling. Throw alam as well.

The way PAK pacers are bowling and Poms batting first here - I can only see a tiered, tiered man at the end of day 3-4 ...... Yasir Shah.

They got a drier wicket at Trafford, won toss as well, then Poms dropped their way to allow PAK post 300+. Everything was lost in just about total 4 hours play - fort with bat, then with ball.

The Hundred is a gimmick and I hope it dies a quick death.

That second point is the most important. IF the ICC wants to grow the game, revenues need to be distributed more fairly AND more needs to be put into smaller teams like Ireland and Afghanistan along with Scotland/Netherlands/Nepal etc. That next tier. Not only will that make the WTC more competitive I think but also the One-Day League will be more intriguing.

I fully acknowledge that the BCCI brings in the largest share of revenue and should get more of the distribution than the rest. However, if you look at something like the NFL or NBA/MLB (to a smaller extent) they share revenue equally. It has allowed smaller market teams to compete year in and year out with the larger market teams (the ones bringing in the most money). It makes the viewing product more enjoyable for the fans. BCCI/ECB/CA need revolutionary and courageous leadership and forgo some money on their end for the betterment of the game at large.

If Naseem is the second coming of F. Trueman, then I am glad that I did not watch cricket in the 1950s and 60s.

Did anyone see the side on graphic about batting location vs crease against Abbas? Lol, no real option but to get lbw into play by keeping them pinned to the crease.

Naseem looks so average

He is a teenager, playing his 3rd test on the trot. He still has lots to learn as well. Give him some leeway. He's going to have moments of brilliance and moments of ordinary bowling. Amir was the same way when he was first onto the scene. Shaheen and Naseem are lucky to have Abbas on the other end to learn from and contain, it is similar to how Amir used to have Asif (for a short while) on the other end allowing him the freedom to attack more.

That graphic right there shows how Abbas has been worked out. With the Duke he can still be a challenge to face but I don’t think he has the same potency with the kookaburra.

Warne calling him a great bowler but I guess some wrist slitters here who have never held a cricket bat or ball know better

Yup, but I think we are still missing a trick here by keeping Rizwan back. No point just trying to beat the edge if the LBW is out of the equation.

Only period we've looked like taking a wicket was Yasir's spell just before lunch. Like I said, it's going to be a long day.

Warne praises everyone. His personality as a commentator is completely different to his personality as a cricketer.

As a cricketer, he was arrogant and fiercely competitive. As a commentator, he is a glorified cheerleader who thinks everyone is an all-time great.

There is also never a bad leg-spinner whenever he is commentating.

Mamoon was right all along. Naseem is not as good as the hype made him sound.

Hype brigade will now throw shoes at Waqar for months because he is not fixing his “technical issue”. Watch this space.

Most comms do. If anything, they only prefer to pick out flaws after someone has been dismissed and even those in a very civilised manner even if it is the umpteenth dismissal in the same fashion.

Last comm I can recall openly calling ** was Ian Chappell maybe.
