With the series levelled at 1-1, West Indies have a great chance to win an ODI series against India, a feat they haven't achieved for more than 13 years.

Overview

India v West Indies, 3rd ODI
Barabati Stadium, Cuttack
Sunday, 22 December; 1:30pm IST, 08:30am GMT

West Indies' last bilateral ODI series win against the Men in Blue dates back to May 2006, when they triumphed 4-1 in a five-match affair at home. In a bid to break that streak, West Indies secured a convincing eight-wicket win in the first ODI this series, but they went down in the second game due to indisciplined bowling and a lack of intensity in the field.

While the batting has shown marked improvement, largely revolving around the stabilising effect of Shai Hope, skipper Kieron Pollard will be well aware that one aspect alone will not be enough to trump the team ranked second in the MRF Tyres ICC Men's ODI Team Rankings.

For India too, batting has been a stronger suit, with Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant showing their mettle in the inexperienced middle order. The bowlers, however, have failed to make early breakthroughs and poor catching has been a matter of concern for skipper Kohli. With Cuttack expected to be another batting-friendly surface, India are likely to persist with five genuine bowling options in their playing XI.

Remember the last time:

KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma continued their fine run as an ODI pair in 2019, adding 227 in 37 overs to lay a solid platform. Kohli departed for a rare duck but late fireworks from Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, that included a 31-run over from Roston Chase, powered India to 387/7.

The West Indies batsmen, aided by some sloppy catching, found themselves on course till the 29th over, with Nicholas Pooran unleashing stroke after stroke in company of Shai Hope. Mohammed Shami however, dented the progress, removing Pooran and Pollard off consecutive balls to trigger a collapse. Kuldeep Yadav joined the act and bagged his second ODI hat-trick as the visitors were eventually bundled out for 280 in the 44th over to give India a series-levelling 107-run win.

What they said:

Virat Kohli, India captain: "It is always good to see the team getting 40-50 extra than what you would've thought at the start of the game. I think it all boils down to the good foundation. Catching has been disappointing. It is not the representation of the kind of standards that we set. It's very important to maintain standards and live upto it. We are one of the best fielding sides in the world."

Kieron Pollard, West Indies captain: "There are some youngsters and there are some talented ones, I have spoken about them again and again. Nothing happens overnight, it's about putting the pieces of puzzle together, it's work in progress. We deserve to go out with a bang, our heads and shoulders are still high. We'll come back and fight hard."

Conditions:

It is expected to be sunny and warm in the afternoon but will get progressively cooler as the day goes along. Dew might make it difficult for spinners under the lights and another high-scoring affair can be expected. The last ODI played here in January 2017, saw as many as 747 runs being scored across two innings as England fell mere 15 short of India's 381/6.

Time for Pant to score 41 (29) against a weak WI and the Indians will start creaming over how good he is.

Speed demon Shardul hitting 133 kph in his very first ball, impressive!!

Quite surprising that it's D/N game at Cattuck & IND opted to field!!!

This is like a rash. Even guys like Jadeja are dropping cathes. Got both hands to it. Despite dive it was catchable easily.

Shami averaging 21 this year with 42 wks in 20 something matches. Best odi bowler in the world currently perhaps only after Bumrah.

Easy win for India in this game good end to the year for them oh my bad they gave the World Cup on a plate to newzeland so not that good of a year but baffled by windies approach even Lewis the hitter 21 off 50 balls *** was he doing wasting so many balls might have just gotten out 21 off 10

Dew is expected in the latter part of the game. Any team would prefer chasing in this game.

But this one might be a bit tougher as the wicket isn't a belter - anything over 250 could be tricky. I think, WIN blasted the first game but they are quite vulnerable chasing side; failed twice against AFGs in T20 under heavy dew, chasing reasonable targets; they won't have won here chasing, but now has a better chance to put a total here & defend.

chase is not a odi batter. darren bravo must replace him, bravo is the missing link in this windies odi batting line up. neglecting him is proving detrimental for windies

and hetmeyer must open the batting, will bolster the partnership with lewis. hope is a pure no.3, not an opener.

infact, hetmeyer must open in tests as well,

For some reason, WIN delayed Cornwall, may be for fitness. But, his List A stats are relatively better than FC stats. They should definitely build Cornwall for 2023 WC.

his test debut was overdue 2 years
and his odi debut is due for 3 years, he probably is windies best spinner barring narine.

dont know why windies are persisting with avg spinners like hayden walsh, pierre, when they have cornwall and narine

Politics may be - comes from one of the weakest members (Antigua).

Saini has bowled well. And he has taken wickets in middle overs with set plans.

Saini has heat but he will be clobbered by better oppositions he’s no Bumrah India will only have one Bumrah ever and that’s because of his action sainis action is normal so not hard to score off of like unlike Bumrah who has pace plus a demented action which makes it extremely difficult for batsmen

Is Saini injured? He is barely touching 140k, thought he was 145k+ bowler in IPL.

Bowled quite a few 145+ already in his first spell, fastest being 148.4. Sacrificing some pace for accuracy I guess, which is going pretty well for him atm. We don't need trundlers, we don't need phast Wahab Riazs as well.

U hate on that Shardul guy but I see he’s doing quite well outstanding economy rate

Lol so kuldeep got rocked out of the attack when these two fall he will come back and get more tail ended cheap wickets and Indians will praise his amazing bowling

Cant understand your problem.

Kuldeep Yadav: 9 overs with economy 5.6

Have to wonder why Jadhav is playing if he's not really going to bowl. Rather have a Pandey or any youngster who may do the same role in 2023.

Ok icc need to fine Polllard this is just ridiculous he’s calling for drinks every over like get on with it u mug

These WI newage batsmen are so amazing to watch. I am positive about a revival unless Windies Board dont mess it up again.

pooran deserved a 100.

he is more of a talent than hope and hetmeyer, once in a generation batter, potential to be a de villiers, must be nurtured at all costs

Navdeep Saini

First 8 overs:
Runs - 28
Wickets - 1

Next 2 Overs

Runs - 30
Wickets - 1

Just when we were thinking Indian bowling has improved, we suddenly started bowling again like old India. Kuldeep & Chahal's poor form a huge concern, Jaddu is just a darter, Shami is a poor LOI bowler too and Bhuvi/Bumrah out with injuries.

Not looking good at all. We need to find some good bowlers. Give Ashwin a chance perhaps?

Saini bowls at an average speed of 138 kph in limitee overs.
Thats fast medium at best for white ball cricket. Far from express

King_Kohli mate you didn’t reply to me kuldeep 6.7 why isn’t my boy chahal playing over this cry baby

Lewis played a strange innings at the top, maybe it will be the reason behind Windies defeat today.

Looks like a 275-ish pitch. But then again, with Rohit and Kohli in the team, India might be able to chase 316.

what a performance by pooran. phenomenal player.
saini good first 8 overs. Death over bowling was horrible. Needs to work on that. Potential is there.

How is he a trundler rofl? bowls 138 on average.

Nice to see West Indies already planning for the next WC. Looks like they’ve sorted out what players to take with them to India in 2023.

India with their batting should be chasing this against WI bowling

When playing India toss is very crucial because again their bowling without Bumrah almost anything is chasebale but if they chase than anything is chaseable as well easy win for India they will make a mockery out of this

Still lacking a quality spinner which is needed to win a WC in Asia. Chase is part time at best. But yeah I like the balance of the team.

These are good batting wickets. Guys like Pollard, Pooran are not new to these conditions. Both are monsterous strikers.

It is quiet a mystery how KL Rahul has been such an inconsistent player given the range of shots he is blessed with. There is literally no shot in cricket coaching manual he can't play.

No mystery. Look at the last boundary he scored off chase. Likes of Kohli would have square cut that along the ground but Rahul tried to hit hard in the air and the point fielder almost caught it. He needs to cut out on those aerial shots.

For one thing Kohli rarely cuts. He is predominantly a front foot player At best he taps it on the head.

yep agree with Mean and green. to beat india make sure you win the toss in the KO stages. If you don't they will take the game away from you even without bumrah and bhuvi.

India loses crucial KO games usually when they lose the toss under kohli apart from the one abberarion which was the 2017 champions trophy final.

most likely india will chase this down pretty easily. this is a pretty flat track

lewis and chase are the ones responsible for windies scoring 40-40 runs less, darren bravo is very much needed

so is andre russell, even for 5 overs with the bat and the ball

IN 2019 Rohit & Rahul have put together highest partnerships .11 matches 989 runs 98.9 average. Strunning. In contrast Rohit & Dhawan average 42.
