What's new

India (317/5) beat England (251) by 66 runs to win first ODI at Pune

A lot of ageism fueled propaganda against Dhawan but he continues to prove his destractors wrong. Clearly still the best ODI opener in Asia after the great Rohit Sharma.

Well the bar is pretty low don't you think?

Next best are Imam ul haq and Tamim Iqbal.

Openers from other countries are irrelevant because India has a dozen of them that are better than what other Asian countries have.

Dhawan is still the best ODI opener in India after Rohit. He is no longer a spring chicken but you cannot tell it from his performance. He deserves to play in the 2023 World Cup.

Nothing more sad than watching a touch player lose his timing. KL presenting a pitiful display of batting.

Kl has talent however I have seen him get bogged down more often then not in ipl and t20 recently, eats up too many balls at the beginning, I’m sure there are others waiting in the wings so he needs to take his chance.

Most ODI 90s in Last 10 Years

7 Kane Williamson
6 SHIKHAR DHAWAN
5 Virat Kohli
5 Rohit Sharma
5 Glenn Maxwell

What if we gave better, younger options though? Why would we persist with oldies then?

Best buddies together, let's hope they help each other get back the form

Dhawan needs to be phased out, he shouldn't be dropped straightaway.

I agree but it should not be the dhoni mistake. Dhoni was done and should have retired after 2017 CT at the very least. England consistently gave chances to Roy/Hales/Bairstow as openers for the entire cycle of 2015-2019 . We are already 2 years into thos cycle and we haven't tried out our options.

Bhaag Viru Bhaag , I'm sure you are happy to see KL as the keeper batsmen. Even though I rate Pant, I would have gone with KL as keeper for the ODIs after Kohli said Rohit and Dhwaan would open. :inti

KL looks like a different player whenever he is playing as a keeper batsman. He should play as a keeper batsman in LOI teams. :inti

Yeah. Always prefer KL as a keeper batsman. :inti

The abundance of batting talent in India is just keeps on increasing. Whom to play and whom to bench is the biggest dilemma for captain. Krunal Pandya now...phew.

Talents like Pant, SKY, Washington etc is warming the bench.

This middle order batting firepower was missing from our ODI cricket for so long.

Anyone trying to break in to the team better score 50+ or get 3+W.
Almost a theme now.

All these players are playing fearless cricket and when you do that debutantes can perform miracles until the teams figure them out a bit and then we find out if the given player is international quality or not.

100 partnership up between these 2 in just 9.2 overs.

318 is the target for England. Should get there in 45 overs.

This pitch is good for batting.
Not sure 317 is enough or not, we could have played better in power play.

Highest SR on debut ODI innings

255.00 Shahid Afridi (102 r/40 b) v SL 1996
187.10 KRUNAL PANDYA (58*/31) v Eng 2021
136.96 John Morris (63*/46) v NZ 1990
136.84 Roland Butcher (52/38) v Aus 1980
131.25 Ben Hollioake (63/48) v Aus 1997

Very emotional interview there from Krunal couldn't get the words out his mouth. The Pandya brothers are a bit eccentric in their behaviors sometimes but credit where credit is due, well played by krunal and won some hearts with the emotion at the end.

To come anywhere close to Afridi's debut innings is a tremendous achievement.

What did they figure out?

They have got plans to counter what he does etc, Not many teams for instance bowling him spin anymore compare to say when Pakistan bowled him fakhar in CT final when he was relatively new lol. So it gets harder to perform in international cricket when teams start to figure you out.

I thought that was Afridi's second match or something. Maybe he dint bat in the first match i guess.

After the start India had I feel 317 is at least 30-40 runs short, England will probably win this one but it won't be easy at all.

England will probably win the match easily but at least next time Rahul, Dhawan, Rohit, won’t waste so many bowls to get set. First match is almost always gifted to opposition by India.

He scored 205 runs in his last 3 ODI innings in Aus and there was no steady diet of spinners being fed to him.

Great to see him achieve this feat. fastest 50 (26) by an ODI debutant
Take a bow Krunal

I didnt say he cant perform or will be dropped from the team etc. I said it gets a bit harder in international cricket to perform over the years (there is a cut off somewhere) because teams figure you out also there are other variables too such as hows your team is performing and if the main bowlers have had to bowl earlier, pitches etc.

With Thakur, good for nothing Prasidh Krishna and Kuldeep, ENG will win this in 45 overs like a walk in a park. 350 was on the cards but as usual our slow starters Rohit and Dhawan killed the chances. Only Bhuvi is the hope. If he picks a couple of early wickets, there is a chance.

Fair enough

Bitter sweet day for @Bhag Viru Bhag today. One Pandya failed but the other performed.:srt

It's a shame we're still sticking with Chahal and Kuldeep. Ashwin is a must.
