The Windies’ win in the third one-day international has added spice to the series, making the last two games potentially engrossing contests.

Overview
India v Windies
4th ODI
Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai
Monday, 29 October, 1:30pm local time, 08:00am GMT

If anyone expected India, seven places above the Windies in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings and playing at home, to dominate the five-match ODI series, it certainly hasn’t gone to plan.

India did win the first ODI comfortably, by eight wickets with 47 balls left in their chase, but the Windies fought back to tie the second game and were convincing in a 43-run win in the third. India, such a force in the format, have been driven by Virat Kohli’s excellence with the bat, but the Windies have found their heroes, none bigger than Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope. Ashley Nurse, though, made the crucial difference from down the order in the last game, scoring quick runs and helped switch the momentum.

The two of them have been outstanding. Hope scored 32 in the first ODI, but has since hit 123* and 95, while Hetmyer has scored 106, 94 and 37. That’s 487 runs! Kohli, of course, has been on a level far above that of the others, scoring 140, 157* and 107, but at least in the last two games, it’s not been enough for India.

“We are not looking to compete anymore. We are looking to win,” said Marlon Samuels at the end of the third ODI, and that’s almost a warning to the Indians, one that they need to take very seriously.

With the exception of Kohli, India’s batting has been a bit patchy. Rohit Sharma scored 152* in the first game but has just 12 runs in the two innings since then. Ambati Rayudu’s 73 in the second game was a good effort, but that’s the only other score of 50-plus for the home side so far.

The likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant and MS Dhoni will have to do more to make sure it’s not a matter of India faltering when their captain falters.

The good thing from the Indian point of view is that their spinners – Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja – have done well. But, then again, Ashley Nurse, Samuels and Devendra Bishoo have been impressive for the Windies too, so there’s not much to choose from there.

And while Jasprit Bumrah marked a good comeback to the XI with a four-for in the third ODI, Jason Holder, Kemar Roach and Obed McCoy have been impressive for the Windies too.

It’s all level, but the Windies look like they mean business. For India, who remain favourites despite the setback in the third game, the batsmen must provide Kohli the support he needs.

Key players

Virat Kohli (India): No one bar Kumar Sangakkara has scored four centuries in a row in ODIs, and Kohli is now part of a nine-man group with three. Another one will put him level with the Sri Lankan champion, and looking at his form, he might get there in Mumbai. That will be motivation, certainly, but for Kohli, it will be important to keep scoring runs anyway to make sure India have a good chance.

Shai Hope (Windies): Along with Hetmyer, Hope has kept the Windies dreaming in the series. A compact batsman, Hope is starting to make a big mark in ODI cricket, and this series might well be the start of great things for him. He doesn’t look like he wants to let go of the opportunity.

Conditions

They don’t play a lot of international cricket at Brabourne Stadium any more – the last ODI was way back in 2006, the final of the ICC Champions Trophy, when Australia beat the Windies. There should be runs to be scored, though, and the weather should be just right.

Squads

India: Virat Kohli (c), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Ambati Rayudu, Rishabh Pant, MS Dhoni (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Khaleel Ahmed, Umesh Yadav, KL Rahul, Manish Pandey

Windies: Jason Holder (c), Fabian Allen, Sunil Ambris, Devendra Bishoo, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope (wk), Alzarri Joseph, Kieran Powell, Ashley Nurse, Keemo Paul, Rovman Powell, Kemar Roach, Marlon Samuels, Oshane Thomas, Obed McCoy

India will come back strongly. I guess this match will be most exciting of this series because of its importance.

Will India comeback strongly in the 4th odi vs WI.

Ok India lost the 3rd ODI with a noticeable margin and in 4th ODI WI will be high in confidence but I strongly believe India will give a strong reply to West Indies. Now, They will be more focused and take WI with damm seriousness which I feel India is not doing till last match.:virat

Kohli would've rested himself for last 2 ODIs had India been 3-0 up by now. Now he'd play both the ODIs.

Drop Dhoni, Rayudu.

Not going to happen... Kohli is in awe of Dhoni's DRS taking abilities, who in turn is in complete awe of Rayudu's biryani cooking skills...

Early exit from WC on the cards! Making it to Semis is also going to be tough with this kind of team selection, policies, captaincy, dependency, etc! England, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, NZ and even WI will push hard at the world cup! If the pitches are flat we are doomed (do not have the fire-power in the middle order to outplay other teams which are much stronger in that department! Even Bangladesh can surprise us!)

This was the best chance with peak Kohli! Not sure what happens next time around (unless the future brigade all get seasoned with Kohli to guide them - of course not doing the ghost role like Dhoni!)

Finals? I'll be pleasantly surprised if we reach semis at this rate!

1-1 against WI at home after 3 ODIs? Questions will have to be asked about Kohli's captaincy especially coming on the back of being trounced in test series against Eng and losing ODI series to them especially after being 1-0 up!

Kohli is a terrible captain really. I thought he would have bigger balls. He is a mental midget compared to Dhoni and Ganguly, who were born leaders.

Playing XI is fine. Just bring Jadeja in for Chahal because in the absence of Hardik, we need the extra batting.

Pant should play this match too, if possible. Or Kedar can come back in as well. Pant will be getting game time in the T20Is.

Thank goodness Dhoni is still in the team. Pant is nowhere near ready for international cricket yet. Still needs a year or 2 of grooming. If we were forced to go with Pant in the WC, we would lose 9 out of 10 chases.

India's top 6 (including Kedar) looks good. When Hardik comes back things will look even better. But I still feel we are one all-arounder short. India cannot play modern day cricket with 3 tailenders in the XI.

Pathetic decision to drop Pant. Kohli once again showing how clueless he is as a captain. Hope they lose!

This!

Dhoni is biggest schemer..... ever! All of Virat's batting prowess is overcompensated by his mind mindbogglingly clueless selection policies...

Dhoni will always be known as the one who most selfishly dragged on and on and blocked path of many talented youngsters for so many years.

Absolutely shameless creature this guy is!

India batting first after winning the toss. Two changes in Indias playing 11 ,Ravindra Jadeja in for Y.Chahal and Rishab Pant makes a way for Kedar Jhadav.

Solitary change in West Indies playing 11, Keemo Paul coming in for Obed McCoy.

game about to start , should a cracker of a match.

Despite playing for 5-odd years now, Dhawan has played just 114 ODIs.... Weird..

He may only act macho. In reality he is just a subservient yes man to leeches like Dhoni.

Yet dhoni continues while pant gets dropped. Excellent decision by team management. I hope they lose again to the windies.

They have selected Jadhav because he can bowl as well. Apart from 1 or 2 changes this is the team that is going to represent India in the World Cup. Get used to it. :inti

Despite hitting 3 6s in first 7 overs, RR is still only 6. Shows how many dots we've played.

And then people question us as to why we want Rohit as limited overs captain.

Don't think Rohit would be much better but anyone would be an upgrade over Kohli....

For all his faults, Pant will only learn while being in team and not cooling his heals outside. Dhoni himself was terrible in his first few outings for Indian team.

Great support for BCCI as usual! Pant is ready for Test Cricket, but not ODIs! Great logic! It is because Dhoni thinks so!

1 or 2 changes are sufficient to make this team quite a bit better. Also if you are suggesting that I don't complain about it what is the point of visiting a cricket forum :srini

With 'well wishers' like these, does Indian cricket need any more enemies?

Hi msd. How are you?

Paul copied Dhawan's celebration when he got him out :))).

Someone posted at Cricinfo,

Vivek: "Next in batting up: Rayudu, Jadhav, Dhoni, Jadeja... Its full of CSK line up!!! Hurry boys"

lol, who says Indian cricket isn't plagued by nepotism?

I think, one big elephant most people are missing in IND team before WC is Dhawan’s form - apart from couple of innings in Asia Cup, he is messing too many starts. Missed once more on this Mumbai track, which is probably 350 per!!!!

This is true! Dhawan has been underwhelming for quite some time now. His patchy form was one of the reasons why India couldn't win ODI series in Eng.

Dhawan Almost always scores in icc tournaments.

Dhawan Almost always scores in icc tournaments.

But he is in the wrong side of 30s now. He was probably player of the tournament in 2004 U19 WC, almost 15 years since then and he wasn’t firing in last ICC event either. If he can come back in 2019, good, otherwise top 3 dominates probably 80% of India’s tactics - he can’t fail there.

Can't wait to see uncles crawling their way to a mighty score of 220.

Dhawan did well in 2 champions trophy and 1 world cup tournament he has played in. Dhawan has a habit of looking mediocre in bilaterals and then really stepping it up in tournaments. I fully expect him to do that again

With Kohli dismissed cheaply for once, don't think we'll score 300. Anything less than that on this batting beauty, we are cannon fodder for the likes of Hope and Hetmyer.

If either misses out, Windies are just as likely to collapse. They're heavily reliant on those two.

Didn’t notice, ATR’s ODI stats are better than List A - Zaheer Abbas way or Imam Ul Haq way?

Dhawan has been the top scorer for India in every 50-over multi-national tournament since his debut.

His avg in such tournaments is 65 which is the all-time record for highest average.

It’ll be indeed great if he can maintain that in 2019.

Rayudu can't change gears. India should look for a better no. 4 considering Dhoni is a no.5.

If Rohit can stay till 50th over, India to score in excess of 340+.

From 227/2 in 37 overs, only this Indian team has the ability to fold <300 in 50 overs. Such is the fragility of this middle over, just 6 months before the world cup.

Lol that 6 from Rayudu. Looks like a good number 4 find.

I was quite frustrated with his start today
Thought he would throw it away after getting boring 30-40
But happy to be proved wrong

Your perception was wrong to begin with. Since his comeback back, Rayadu has had a SR of 89.

Since his comeback he has played just 10 Odis and didn't get to bat in 2 innings

So the sample size is too small to make any perception
I am happy with his performance in this series and wish he continues performing like this

Funny how rohit has raised his standard that even score of 162 is looking small by his standard.

Nowadays, opposition players come running across to shake the batsman's hand even if he scores 130. What's with this nonsense these days? This sort of stuff hardly used to happen in the 80's and 90's. What's with the overt display of 'sportsmanship'?? Looks fake.

Before his comeback he had played 30 odd matches out of which 20+ were 2014 or prior, when SRs weren't as high as they are today. So there wasn't enough sample size for you to come to any conclusion about his "slow" batting either.

Some players just get judged and typecast because of perception, not reality.

Agree with that
Maybe I am just scrutinising him way too much

Easy batting track. Inexperienced bowling attack and rayudu cashes in. Fair play to him for performing though i still feel he will fail when it matters most.

India have lost their review in the 4th over itself
MSD is failing even at taking reviews :viru
