The vast aisles and the stands of Old Trafford will be brimming with excitement as fans celebrate, perhaps, the most anticipated clash of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019.

Overview

India v Pakistan
Old Trafford, Manchester
2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Match 22
Sunday, 16 June; 10.30am local, 09.30am GMT

With their last game against New Zealand being washed out, Virat Kohli's men will be eager to take the field as they face Pakistan in Manchester on Sunday. While their wins against South Africa and Australia came on the back of all-round efforts, it won't be an easy start for the Indian top order, which, in the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, will be up against an in-form Mohammad Amir.

With KL Rahul set to open, the no. 4 spot yet again leaves room for discussion, with Dinesh Karthik and Vijay Shankar in contention.

Pakistan, who registered a remarkable win against England, lost to Australia by 41 runs in Taunton. Their bowlers made a strong comeback in the latter half of the innings, but it was the batting effort that let them down. Sarfaraz Ahmed might consider drafting in Haris Sohail into the playing eleven in place of the experienced Shoaib Malik, who has failed in each of his three outings in the tournament so far.

The World Cup head-to-head result, which firmly rests on India's side with six wins to none, would be of least importance considering the unpredictable nature of the Pakistan team. The Sarfaraz Ahmed led side, which is capable to beat any opposition on their day, will look to produce a result similar to that of the ICC Champions Trophy finals from two years ago.

Key Players:

Virat Kohli (India): In Shikhar Dhawan's absence, Virat Kohli will now have an added responsibility. The Indian captain has often produced his best performances against Pakistan in multi-nation tournaments and will eye another big score on Sunday.

Mohammad Hafeez (Pakistan): Hafeez starred with the bat against England, scoring a quickfire 84 which powered his side to a 14-run victory over the hosts. With Pakistan desperately needing a match-defining innings as they seek their second win in the competition, Hafeez, who averages 48.60 against India, could be their key man at Old Trafford.

Conditions:

It is expected to be a dry and clear start to the day with some early sunshine, but its the afternoon hours that come with a heavy rain threat. Teams batting second have won four of the last five matches at Old Trafford and with rain expected to play its part, both captains will be tempted to field first.

Squads:

India: Virat Kohli (c), Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, MS Dhoni (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, Vijay Shankar, Rohit Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav

Pakistan: Sarfaraz Ahmed (c, wk), Asif Ali, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Imam-ul-Haq, Shadab Khan, Shoaib Malik, Wahab Riaz, Haris Sohail, Imad Wasim, Fakhar Zaman

India v Pakistan

• India have won four of their last five men’s ODIs against Pakistan, however their sole loss in
that time did come in an ICC tournament in England, the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy final
held at The Oval.
• India have won all six of their previous ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup matches against
Pakistan, five of those victories coming having defended a first innings total.
• India have lost only two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup games since the completion of the
2007 edition (W16, T1) and have picked up two wins from as many completed games thus far
at the 2019 tournament (A1).
• India and Pakistan have met once before in a men’s ODI at Old Trafford, that clash coming
in the 1999 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup with India winning by 47 runs.
• Since beating Pakistan at Old Trafford in the 1999 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup India have
played just one ODI at the venue in Manchester, losing by three wickets there to England in
2007.
• Pakistan’s loss to India at Old Trafford in the 1999 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup was a sixth
straight loss at the venue for them, since then though they have won twice at the
Manchester venue, beating New Zealand in the semi-finals of that 1999 tournament and
then England in 2003.
• Mohammad Amir returned career best ODI bowling figures of 5/30 in Pakistan’s most recent
match, their 41 run loss to Australia in Taunton; however he has failed to take a wicket in four
of six previous ODIs against India.
• Virat Kohli (India) is 57 runs away from becoming the ninth player to score 11,000 ODI runs,
Sachin Tendulkar currently holds the record for the quickest to reach the milestone at 276
innings, Kohli has played just 221 innings so far.
• Rohit Sharma (India) has made scores of 95, 56, 122*, and 57 in his last four ODI innings, the
longest run of 50+ scores in his career in the format, if he manages another 50 in this match
he’d be the fourth player to do this for India (Tendulkar, Kohli (twice) and Rahane).
• Imam-ul-Haq has an ODI batting average of 57.2 (1,486 runs), of players to score 1,000+ runs
in men’s ODIs only two players have a better average, Ryan ten Doeschate (67) and India’s

Virat Kohli (59.5).Capture.JPG

Getting different weather reports. Seems we might get a reduced game with on/off showers? Or is a complete washout likely?

Almost 800,000 applications for tickets and more than a billion viewers expected worldwide – when India take on Pakistan it’s always a must-see event.

Sunday’s clash at Old Trafford is the most eagerly-anticipated of all the group-stage matches at this ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur said in his pre-match press conference that careers will be defined by the fixture, while the fact the sides have met just twice – in any format – in the past two years, makes the excitement all the more palpable.

Throw in the match’s importance in the race for the knockout stages and it’s easy to see why it will be one of the biggest global sporting events of the year.

So what could prove to be the decisive factor in Manchester?

Ending the World Cup woe

Pakistan have the better of the overall head-to-head record – winning 73 of the 131 ODIs contested between the sides, to India’s 54 – but at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, it’s a different story entirely.

India have come out on top in all six meetings at the global showpiece, starting with a 43-run triumph back in 1992 and most recently securing a 76-run victory in 2015.

It’s quite a statistical hoodoo for Pakistan to overcome but they can take heart from the last game the teams played in England – Fakhar Zaman’s 114 and Mohammad Amir’s 3/16 helping them to a huge 180-run win in the ICC Champions Trophy final at the Oval almost two years ago to the day.

Amir’s resurgence

Speaking of Mohammad Amir, he wasn’t in Pakistan’s initial 15-man World Cup squad but once injuries gave him an opportunity at the tournament, the left-arm seamer has seized it in style.

Three wickets against West Indies, two against England and brilliant figures of 5/30 against Australia have put him among the tournament’s leading wicket-takers.

The 27-year-old’s battle against the Indian top order could prove decisive and Amir will be particularly encouraged by his recent record against opener Rohit Sharma – trapping him LBW with his third ball in that 2017 Champions Trophy final, having dismissed him in the same manner with his second ball in the Asia Cup a year prior.

Amir has proven himself a bowler for the big occasion and occasions don’t come much bigger than this.

Kohli’s class

With KL Rahul expected to move up from No.4 open the batting for India in the absence of the injured Shikhar Dhawan, more pressure could fall on the shoulders of Virat Kohli at three.

Fortunately, the Indian skipper seems impervious and has carried the team on his back plenty of times during his 11-year international career.

Kohli demonstrated his form with a classy knock of 82 against Australia and has a healthy average of 45.90, with two tons and a half-century, in his 12 ODIs against Pakistan.

The number one batsman in the ODI rankings also sports a ridiculous 70.33 average over the past four years in the format – racking up 5,697 runs in that time – so limiting the damage he can cause will be a vital, if unenviable, task for Mickey Arthur’s men.

Babar looking to build

He’s still only 24 years old but Pakistan hope that in the long-term, Babar Azam can be their answer to Kohli.

That’s a huge ask for any young player but the classy right-hander is certainly on the right track and is already ranked as the number one batsman in international T20 cricket.

Heading into this World Cup, Babar had played 64 ODIs in which he had made 2,739 runs at 51.67 (including nine hundreds and 12 fifties), with a strike rate of 85.96.

Those are numbers that compare favourably to Kohli at that stage of his career – after 64 ODIs, the Indian superstar had accumulated 2,347 runs at 43.49 (including six hundreds and 16 fifties), with a strike rate of 82.14.

It’s what Kohli did next and how his game developed that puts him among the all-time greats but Babar, who is yet to clear 50 in four matches against India, could certainly take another step down that path by leading Pakistan to victory on Sunday.

Bumrah bringing his best

As the number one bowler in the ICC ODI rankings, Jasprit Bumrah provides India with another consistently potent weapon with the ball, although he hasn’t quite hit the heights in his four one-dayers against Pakistan.

Bumrah has taken just four wickets in those matches and the 0/68 from the Champions Trophy final in 2017 remain his worst figures in ODI cricket to date.

An average of 35.75 against Pakistan isn’t in the same league as his stellar mark of 21.98 during his ODI career as a whole but the 25-year-old has already demonstrated his quality during this World Cup with a scintillating spell in India’s opener against South Africa that caused fits for the Proteas top order.

Heading into the World Cup, nobody in world cricket had taken more wickets at the death than Bumrah’s 44 since his ODI debut against Australia in January 2016, so if the game does go down to the wire – India can boast just the man for the job.

Its shocking how different the BBC and MetOffice reports are. There will be no game at all if the MetOffice forecast is accurate. This world cup is officially scarred.

Arent there any locals from Manchester on PP? What weather do they see with their eyes right now?

I think everyone here will agree that unless India and Pakistan meet in the semis or the finals, this is the most important game of the tournament.

It will be by far the most watched game in cricket history and if it turns into a washout, then England has no right to hos international cricket tournaments any time soon. And I am confident all the sponsors will prevent a future disaster like this from occurring.

Hopefully we get a fair match in.

It's been frustrating for fans but every summer month is similar for England with rainfall.

I'm not quite sure why they couldn't have organised it for a backup day at the same ground next day for every match... teams & officials are already there... There's always a few days between games anyway & nowhere in England is more than a short bus or train ride away (by Australian or Pakistan or Indian standards) for the next game...

If some teams had to play with only a 2 day break or whatever as a result- thats fine. It's still a break & only a single ODI, 10 overs bowling & WC is supposed to be for the fans.

This is absolutely pathetic. Why couldn't they cover the whole damn ground. It is going to get one if the most sporting events ever ! Not some useless overhyped bilateral like the Ashes. England should be penalised for this. No more ICC tournaments should be hosted here for another decade.

Morning was mostly predicted to be clear... it's around game time & second innings that rain is most likely...

Sun should help dry the field out though.

sun will be out for the next 4 hours or so and seems like the drainage system has done its job so if there arent any showers during the game looks like the game will happen

Penalised for the weather?

If you print your e ticket outside the stadium what info do you need? Im thinking where i could print my tickets in manchester this early in the morning..

Penalised for the weather?

Duh-uh...Not penalized for weather, but obviously for not even bothering to cover the outfield fully when they knew the weather forecast since atleast a week in advance. Is ECB bankrupt to this level that they cant even afford to buy covers or pay groundsmen to do a better job of sopping the damp patches (not just this match but also the matches that already got cancelled). Knowing the unpredictable English weather, couldn’t these guys have bought some super soppers or something?

Sarfraz should show some guts and bat first. We have seen Pak is the worst chasing side. When was the last time we won chasing against a top side?? Against Aus, Hassan and Wahab saved Pakistan by scoring 80 runs. Without them, Pak was bundled out for 180. If Pak bowls first, then the match is gone. Even if India scores 200, Pakistan aint chasing it. Hopefully, Sarfraz and think tank see the stats for Pak chasing in the last 10 years and make a sane decision to bat first if they win the toss. Against Aus, had Sarfraz batted first the result may have been different.

BEST starting 11 Against India? Do you Agree?

Imam
Fakhar
Baber
Sarfaraz
Hafeez
Asif Ali
Shadab
Hassan
Wahab
Husnain
Amir

Am guessing its typical fickle angreez weather....sunny one moment, cloudy next, rainy third, freezin cold fourth, hot next....and so on...so its hard to predict...but all in all this will be a reduced overs game....as per my cousin who in is in Manc for the game....:)

Malik is wasting a spot when we needed him to contribute 30 odd runs against Australia he failed, should be benched Sohail in for him!

This image is crazy good.

Looks like m taking off today.

thats a massive tail

for me the best we can do is this

1. Imam
2. Fahkar
3. Babr
4. Haris
5. Sarfraz
6. Professor
7. Asif Ali
8. Shadab
9. Hasan
10. Amir
11. Riaz

the only quesiton for me is dropping Asif Ali for Shaheen imo

Weather forecasters trying to confuse bookies may be. BBC & MetOffice could end up making more profits than ICC for this match. 100s of millions of fans all around the world keeping an eye consistently on weather.

You could play all 11 batsmen or all rounders.

Tail won't matter once either one of the team India or Pakistan crosses 300 batting first.

If it's a full game, the team chasing will lose 100 percent.

MET Office forecast is bipolar. :))

An hour ago it was saying 70-80% chance of rain, now it's saying 20-50%.

The pic posted above is encouraging. We might get a game after all.

Hopefully no more rain.

That doesn’t mean you should have 5 tailenders

As per latest weather report rain scheduled from 1130/12 onwards.

So we might get 2 hours play then after that umpires will decide whether to abandon match.

Media reporting Shadab & Imad both in playing XI. Shaheen & Asif dropped.
1. Fakhar
2. Imam
3. Babar
4. Hafeez
5. Sarfraz
6. Malik
7. Imad
8. Shadab
9. Hassan
10. Wahab
11. Amir

At what time this picture taken out...early morning 6:30 am today?

It will only stay like that until around 10 am.

Then rain clouds will enter and it will be very overcast until 1130 or 12. This is when it will start to rain and persistently at that.

Why is unfit fat belly Imad paying and is it a requirement that Malik had to play every India game?

Awful planning

Can’t afford to feed 20 overs of spin to Indian juggernaut

Max one of shadab/imad should play

We have to play 5 bowlers, Hussinan for Afridi, Shadab for Malik and Harris for Asif...

Full bowlers and full batsmen is best way to increase your chances of success. Malik and Asif has been lot less reliable...

Despite that batting first is vital. One of the top thee has to bat 35+ overs to ensure 300+, which can be converted to 340+, regardless 5 bowlers is must.

how sure are you with this ? I have read somewhere that rain will only start after 4pm

With the forecast and going by past games no way 50 over game will happen. Captains and icc can perhaps make a special case and start this out as 20 over game with 5 min break. By the time rain comes 30 odd overs should be done and 10 more can be squeezed in some point later , even have lights used for later in night if need be. Wonder if there is any provision in rules for icc to make such a move.

Honestly, against India, I would go with an extra pacer and 5 bowlers against India.

If 6 batsmen can't set a total or chase, I don't think 7 will chase or set a reasonable target either. Plus, Shadab, Wahab, Hassan and even Husnain and Amir can bat. OFCOURSE, They are not Brian Lara but they all aren't completely clueless with the bat like Junaid Khan or Waqar Younis.

Waqar wasn’t clueless with the bat

They need to pick a team for a 20 20 as we might only get 40 overs of total play today.

Why replace afridi with a spinner so stupid they could have tried m husnian his pace would have scuffed the ball for the reverse swing pathetic ... malik scored poorly in both games against india in champion trophy ...

Sure, I would include Haris for Asif that doesn't sound too bad of an option but the only problem is if Fakhar doesn't survive early. Our acceleration may suffer.

Well the weather was good as long as it lasted.

Rain will eventually come.

Pakistan team would want a full lunch especially Imad etc so 5 minutes is too quick.

Given if anything we are looking at 20 to 30 over game you shouldn't need batting till 11 and with wet conditions spinners may find it very hard. So it may be better to try our hasnain over IMAd given he has done well in t20 format and if he gets his Yorkers going could be more useful. Also big surprise factor as Indians haven't played him and wont be expecting him.

RAIN-1jpeg

Yesterday they tried using halogen lamps to dry the outfield lol.

Penalised for the weather?

I think he meant - penalized for not covering the entire ground...so that outfield remains dry....
on tv saurav just said - 2016 or so WC- T20 India vs pak-game, it rained, game started an hour later but had a full match.....there are heaps of grounds in sl that cover the ground...so why not in eng with a tournament of this magnitude....lack of man power maybe???
