Indian general election - April and May 2019 - Discussion Thread

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday offered to resign as Congress chief after a humiliating Lok Sabha loss that saw him lose even his stronghold of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

Sources told India Today TV that Gandhi told a group of senior Congress leaders including his mother Sonia that he takes full responsibility for the election defeat and that he is willing to resign as the party's president.

However, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala denied the reports of Rahul Gandhi offering to resign.

Sources also indicated that the Congress Working Committee (CWC) will meet in a week to discuss Rahul Gandhi's offer.

Addressing a press conference, the Congress president wished Prime Minister "all the best" and hoped that he looks after the interest of the people.

When reporters asked what went wrong according to him, Gandhi said it did not matter today what he thinks but told Congress party workers to not feel dejected and have faith.

"Today is the day to wish Modi all the best, hopes he looks after the interest of the nation," he said.

"I told before the campaign that voters will decide the final verdict and they have given their verdict," he said.

As the final innings of the Lok Sabha elections are set to come to a close, it would be safe to conclude that the Narendra Modi-led NDA government has improved its performance in 2014 and emerged as a stronger force.

This guy is pure class man.

Had he been a bit more competent, he would have made an AMAZING PM.

He was handed over things too easily and that led to his undoing.

Let's see what's Congress's next move.

A bh@kt talking about living in a bubble. However if demonitization couldn't bring you out of your bubble, nothing else will.

Thankfully we are a keyboard warrior alone. Part of campaigning including door to door and mohalla discussions. If you do that you will see that it takes only couple of days to realize what and how people think.

Talking about door to door campaigns one thing we discovered was that it is a completely dying form of campaign for all parties except BJP. We traveled around six southern districts in karnataka and few northern districts in kerala. Except few houses in kerala, who were met by communist party members , not a single other party had visited them. Most of the other parties based there campaign solely on public rallies or whatsapp. That was surprising to see and my first such experience in thirty years of door to door campaign. Earlier almost all parties used to go local houses and used the hold meetings. It was almost like they have given up

LOL What a dramaybaaz type post. Have some shame, hes one of the founders of your country.

Nehru and the Gandhi Dynasty is the reason why India has the Kashmir issue now. When we were on the way to capturing all of Kashmir, this dumb a** put a hold on it and went to UN to find a solution. The result is what you see now, here I SPIT again because I had to type his name................

Pots and Pans and Pans and Pots .. Bye Bye Sidhu...

BJP vs Congress........

And yet Rahul will still keep his job. If Congress has any sense they’d make someone like Amarinder Singh, the only Congress politician who deserves any credit right now, President of the party.

Errr NO, Jinnah was no visionary, he was agent built by the British to cause divide between hindus & muslims. British made him and he eventually took their ideology and helped create Pakistan...

Yes before Jinnah , Hindus and Muslims of the subcontinent used to hold hands and slip along the Ganges singing songs about their friendship...

Yes before Jinnah , Hindus and Muslims of the subcontinent used to hold hands and slip along the Ganges singing songs about their friendship...

Maybe not but they would be dealing with the issues as one country and not war mongering for the last 70 years. Also, you forget Hindus and Muslims do coexist in India today. Just because Pakistan exists does not mean India is not a multi-religious society. They may not all be singing kumbaya but at least India is still functioning with a democratically elected government

And you are naive to think the results are 100% legit seeing the number of weeks between voting and *electronic* counting given how the electronic systems can, and have, been hacked.

Enjoy!

I know that.

EVMs can be hacked.

1. The thing is that polling in India takes place in 6 weeks due to the population size and the geography of India.

2. Hacking EVMs at a large scale to win elections is pretty unrealistic.

3. Moreover, when the results are 300 vs 50...it's just pointless to even talk about EVM hacking as the cause of one's failure.

There is nothing wrong in questioning EC and EVMs.

Nothing is unquestionable.

BJP fans did the same in 2014.

As for EC & EVM issue, watch this

I was planning to read up more on this.

Not that it would have changed election results in any way but to understand what really happened.

----

As for grace, leave it bhai. :))

Rahul Gandhi has more grace in his pinky finger than the 2 supreme BJP leaders can manage in 10 lifetimes.

Class gets you nothing if it is accompanied by amounts of stupidity that Gandhi brings. I know you hate modi, but what Amit Shah and Modi have done has been nothing short of brilliant in terms of developing and managing a brand.

He was a pariah as late as 2009-10, he built a brand out of his name for the next 5 years as Congress's corruption and cutting their local leadership at their knees approach at last started to show the results. Even this campaign, Gandhi and the idiots around him decided to attack Modi's strongest selling point, his integrity and nationalism, anyone with half a brain would have told them, you attack your opponent where is weak not strong.

How will the EVMs be hacked? They are stand alone machines with no network capability.

What is so classy about this?

Bit more competent? He needs to be way more than "bit more" competent. He's the reason Modi is ruling the roost.

Congress has 5 years. Good time to kick Rahul out and revive the entire party.

How will the EVMs be hacked? They are stand alone machines with no network capability.
EVM hacking is very impractical and everyone knows it. Here are some points

1) all software burnt on ROM during manufacturing. No one including manufacturer can change it afterwards
2) no hardware for any kind of networking
3) limited to five votes per minute and maximum 2000 per EVM
4) they don't even have power cables to avoid disturbances due to sudden power surges

Only way they can do anything is by physically changing the hardware internally. To avoid this every one of them is secured and tested the day before in front of all party representation. They test voting and count the results in front of party representatives. From this election there is a large scale VVPATS verifications too. So we can get off this bandwagon.

Every thing can be manipulated. But as it stands EVMs are the least of our concerns. Opposition won the elections as recently as Dec 2018 which used the same EVMS. They also won the most surprising victory in 2004. This time everyone and their dogs knew Modi will be back. Only the extent of victory was open to debate which was answered correctly in exit polls. So let's move on

Congress won't be back in 2024. Bjp will be back may be with smaller mandate. Next opening for Congress is in 2029.

A candidate from Punjab who thought he only received 5 votes.

The reporter rubs salt onto the poor guy’s wounds by asking "When your own family doesn't support you, how can you expect outsiders to help you?" Lol.

In the end however he received 856 votes.

:)) How do you think we felt the morning after the Brexit vote or 65m Americans after Trump won ? Democracy is maddening, frustrating and sometimes even heartbreaking.

Sadly the major countries of the world is in the grip of right-wing domination. But as the saying goes the night is darkest before the dawn.

Time for progressives to pick themselves up and work harder than before, and demand better leaders otherwise we'll keep getting mauled.

Absolutely correct, Markhor.

The current climate is ripe for despots like Trumps and Modis to come to power, again and again.

Lynchings started the minute serial liar Modi said "inclusive". The first term was nothing, we will see the worst of the Sanghis in the next 5, have to brace ourselves for a bumpy road. We are living in a nightmare and it never seems to end.

Gambhir expressed support for a muslim victim and asked for exemplary action, but he faced abuses from the fraud hindus who accused him of appeasement. It is the fraud hindus who are giving a bad name to the BJP, which is about Inclusive Growth and Universal Trust.

Congratulations to all the BJP supporters, decimated the Congress completely. Everyone has agreed that BJP is going to homes and connecting, I can never support them but such a strong mandate should hopefully make them take stronger action on various fronts.

This!

And the worst part is that 40% of Indians aren't bothered with whatever happens with the idea of India, an idea on which our country was created by our forefathers.

However, one should know that Nehru and Gandhi were worst things to happen to India. Without them, we'd have been akhand.

So that tadipar goon is now India's home minister. Well done 56" and his supporters.

And that incompetent guy is India's defence minister. God save India from these nincompoops.

The dream team Rahul Gandhi and his *******’s what we wanted to see in Power alas not to be. We could’ve enjoyed few more scams, that would have been hit on everyy news channels. Not to mention all the terrorists attacks that we could’ve enjoyed in their tenure like the previous 10 years of Congress rule. Goosd to know Indians aren’t such fools.
Let’s wait and see what happens in next 5 years rather than going all doom and gloom because your kid friend Rahul couldn’t win. As if he had any chance to begin with.

****** are so predictable with their personal insults as if their master will thrash them for not defending him at every possible juncture.

How will the EVMs be hacked? They are stand alone machines with no network capability.

There are a lot of viewpoints floating around regarding EVMs but yes, ours don't have any network capability, so I believe they can't be hacked remotely.

EC also threw a challenge and none took it up.

But with that being said, I am hearing that EVMs can be hacked if you get access to the physical device. Or can be replaced.

There were reports about unsecure transporation of EVMs and EC came under severe criticism. They said those were reserve EVMs but still according to the law, even reserve EVMs must be transported securely.

In the past, there were reports about an EVM malfunction in Haryana I believe where the vote went to BJP no matter what what button was pressed. But I don't think that would have been the case in Lok Sabha elections or we would have seen a huge furore. However I am curious to know how did that happen?

For the Lok Sabha, physical verification of VVPATS were done across 20,000 polling stations and not a single mismatch was found.

I personally don't have any problems with EVM. Even if tampering happens, you can't do it at a mass scale so it's just pointless to complain about EVM issue.

However unsecure transportation of EVMs (whether main or reserve) should be considered as a serious issue.

Haha yeah frustrating as hell. :))

Time for progressives to pick themselves up and work harder than before, and demand better leaders otherwise we'll keep getting mauled.

So true.

No point blaming BJP for the state of India. They are what they are. Beyond pathetic.

The real blame goes to the opposition for not doing enough to challenge them. They simply weren't upto the mark.

1. Didn't project a national level leader (let TINA become a huge factor)
2. Didn't have a massive outreach program like BJP did
3. Nyay scheme was announced too late with a stupid ad (most people who were to benefit from it NEVER got to hear about it)
4. Wasting time with Chowkidar Chor Hai slogans even when leaders were saying that is not working at the ground level
5. Not focusing on local issues well enough
6. Not countering propaganda (God knows what must have been forwarded on those Whatsapp groups by the BJP IT cell)
7. Mistaking Twitter applause for real applause (BJP rightly focused on Whatsapp as opposed to Twitter)
8. Not developing local leaders (should have kicked out these useless oldie dead weights)

And the list goes on and on.

When did I disagree with any of that? Also I have given credit for BJP for their efforts. Their campaign was engineered amazingly well.

Also having an incompetent opposition helped massively.

This whole resignation drama is as fake as the ordinance shredding drama he did during UPA 2, its easy to offer to resign when you know the people who are going to accept/reject your resignation are your mother and your hangers on.

Nah. It wasn't. Ordinance was fake.

Whole world knew it.

This wasn't.

Rahul has been vehement about stepping down as the president. Even news channels were talking about it quoting private sources

Either this is genuine or Congress paid off all the news channels including pro BJP ones. :P

It's easy to say power is no big deal when you don't have access to it.

It is a big deal to say no to it when you have access to it.

For Rahul though, it's a bit easier, cos he was never after power.

It's not hard to see that Rahul Gandhi is a genuinely classy dude with a good heart.

I won't say the same about Sonia Gandhi.
