Liverpool FC | 2022/23 Season

A club like Liverpool can't continue like this

Although klopp should go there's no way these owners will invest in the team so it's pointless sacking him .

We need 2 changes new owner plus a new manager to bring something else to the table.

Liverpool fans need to somehow detach themselves from this emotional connection they have with Klopp. Yes he's won you the only Premier League title in your club history however the reality is he hasn't recovered after losing the Champions League final last year.

Liverpool were at one point Quadruple bound but ended up losing out on the League and Europe's biggest prize. This has clearly shattered his confidence and ability to manage his players.

He's also to blame for neglecting the midfield. You can't have so many forwards without reinforcing the Midfield. The signing of Gakpo baffled me because it was done merely to stop Man Utd acquiring him instead.

Just like how Wenger and Pochettino never managed to recover after the 2006 and 2019 Champions League Finals (respectively), Klopp also finds himself in the same predicament. This also happened to him at Dortmund after they lost to Bayern in the 2013 Champions League Final. I remember at one point Dortmund were in the relegation zone during the middle of his last season with them.

There's a reason why Pep is a far superior manager. He wouldn't sink this low (even if he had less funds).

How Klopp has kept his job is quite astonishing.

They should sack Klopp and bring in Tuchel.

It seems that everything is hinging on the new owners coming in, spending money, rebuilding the squad and deciding on Klopp's future.

It looks like this season is a write-off unless they can win the Champions League.

Looks like Liverpool players are already in season over mode now :)))

Looks like Liverpool players are already in season over mode now :)))

The likes of Salah are already on the beach it seems.

Ageing team - Milner, Henderson etc legs have gone and need replacing.

Liverpool will listen to offers this summer for their 31-year-old former Cameroon international centre-back Joel Matip, whose contract at Anfield runs until 2024. (Football Insider)

This whole talk of an aging team is nonsense. Sure they are players like Milner & Henderson that are old and need replacing. But what about players like Salah, Fabinho, Robertson, Gomez, Matip, Alexander Arnold, Van Dyjk, who are all underperforming? Are these players too old as well now?

The reality is that if any other team were putting in these sort of performances and getting battered in every away game, the manager would come under serious scrutiny. But because it is Klopp, he is getting a free pass. People are making all sorts of excuses for Klopp by playing the age card of the players and it is annoying.

Sky Germany report that Naby Keita is "on the verge of leaving" Liverpool at the end of the season.

He's been another Klopp flop signing. Never really settled at LFC.

Klopp seems to be losing the plot which can't be good for the players.

Arguing with reporters, refusing to answer questions and openly questioning the transfer policy of other teams.

Looks like a man in freefall.

Cody Gakpo might have joined Liverpool too early and is struggling to find his feet in an underperforming team, says new Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman.

The 23-year-old forward had a breakout World Cup in Qatar, scoring three goals in five matches as the Netherlands reached the quarter-finals.

However, he has yet to score in six appearances for Liverpool since joining from PSV Eindhoven in January.

"He has ended up in a team that is not doing well," Koeman said.

"If you don't score or you're not important and you don't win any matches, it's very difficult, especially for a young player.

"If that was someone aged 28, with experience, it would be different."

BBC

That was more like it from Liverpool.

They were in the mood and bossed the match from start to finish.

As great a break away goal the first one was it did start with Everton hitting the post. From there on Nunez ran full length of the pitch eventually finding Salah who only had to poke it home. What Pickford was trying to do will forever be a mystery:viru

Good to see Gakpo getting on the score sheet with a simple tap in. Ronald Koeman is talking stupid with his Gakpo having joined Liverpool to early comment. Had we waited for the summer then Chelsea who were also interested in him would have snapped him up in January.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says Monday's 2-0 win over Everton was "a massive relief" and "the performance was a statement" to the rest of the Premier League.

Why do you want JK to depart when he is the best man for the job?. He is a natural Liverpool manager who has won it all for us. Give him some £300 million then watch him take us to the top again. Like all managers he will make his share of mistakes too. There is no one else out there who I would rather have as manager.

Liverpool's pursuit of a top-four Premier League finish gathered further momentum at the expense of Newcastle United's similar ambitions with a crucial win at St James' Park.

Jurgen Klopp's side, who secured their first league win of 2023 in the Merseyside derby against Everton on Monday, took control with two early goals from Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo.

Newcastle's miserable night worsened with a first-half red card for goalkeeper Nick Pope, ruling him out of next Sunday's Carabao Cup final against Manchester United at Wembley.

Nunez powered home the opener from Trent Alexander-Arnold's pass after 10 minutes, then Gakpo scored for the second successive match seven minutes later, pouncing on Mohamed Salah's piece of creation to beat Pope.

The Newcastle keeper then left referee Anthony Taylor with no option but to send him off after 22 minutes when he misjudged a dash from goal in an attempt to challenge Salah. He slipped and had to handle to stop Liverpool's Egypt forward from racing clear.

Ironically, Pope's replacement Martin Dubravka is cup-tied for Wembley having played for Manchester United in an earlier round, leaving former Liverpool keeper Loris Karius as the most likely contender to face Erik ten Hag's side.

Newcastle were unable to overcome the handicap as they went down to only their second league defeat this season, the first also coming against Liverpool at Anfield in August.

It capped a disappointing build-up to Newcastle's first Wembley final since the FA Cup in 1999, but they still showed plenty of spirit despite their numerical disadvantage, Liverpool keeper Alisson turning Allan Saint-Maximin's shot on to the bar, while Dan Burn also rattled the woodwork with a header. The Brazilian also saved well from Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson.

Klopp will have left Tyneside highly satisfied after desperate away defeats at Brentford, Brighton and Wolverhampton Wanderers as Liverpool now stand only six points behind fourth-placed Newcastle with a game in hand.

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez has "a chance" of facing Real Madrid in the Champions League after injuring his shoulder against Newcastle, says manager Jurgen Klopp.

The 23-year-old was substituted during the second half of the Reds' 2-0 win at St James' Park on Saturday.

Nunez left the pitch holding his shoulder after an earlier clash with Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier.

"There's a chance, we have to see how he'll cope with the pain," said Klopp.

Uruguay international Nunez has scored 11 goals in all competitions for Liverpool this season after joining from Benfica in the summer.

Liverpool welcome La Liga giants Real Madrid to Anfield on Tuesday (20:00 GMT) for their last-16 first leg.

It is the first time the two sides have met since last season's Champions League final in Paris, which Real won 1-0.

"I watched it back this weekend," said Klopp of that match. "I realised why I hadn't before that.

"It was torture; we played a good game, we could have won it but they scored the decisive goal. You could see their experience, how little they lose confidence, they are there for their chance. That is what you can learn from them.

"We are different teams in different times. Let's see who goes through."

Liverpool go into Tuesday's match having picked up back-to-back wins over Everton and Newcastle in the Premier League, an upturn in form following defeat by Wolves and a dismal January in which they won just one league point.

Klopp has taken confidence from his side's recent performances, and hopes they have found their form at the right time.

"It is one of the biggest games in the world [with added] recent history and it will be a top game," added Klopp.

"I am really happy we play it now. Four weeks ago it would have been different, but life is all about timing and maybe we found back our feet in time.

"Now we have these two results and hopefully we can build on that but now we need to play two super games.

"If we don't play our best we don't have a chance. Real Madrid doesn't have to play their best [to] still have a chance."

Liverpool owner John Henry says he is not selling the Premier League club, but does expect some investment.

Henry's Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which bought Liverpool in 2010, said in November it "would consider new shareholders" in the Reds.

FSG chairman Tom Werner later said the club's owners were "exploring a sale" but could continue their "stewardship for quite a while".

"Are we selling LFC? No," Henry told the Boston Sports Journal.

"Are talking with investors about LFC? Yes. Will something happen there? I believe so, but it won't be a sale."

The American was speaking in a question-and-answer session conducted over email.

FSG has been open to investment in Liverpool for several years, and has recently engaged Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs in that process.

"I know there has been a lot of conversation and quotes about LFC, but I keep to the facts: we merely formalised an ongoing process," said Henry.

His comments were published prior to Liverpool facing Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at Anfield on Tuesday.

The Reds are go into the game eighth in the Premier League having won their past two games.

FSG bought Liverpool in a £300m deal following the controversial tenure of former owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

American basketball star LeBron James has been a part-owner of Liverpool since 2011 and has a 2% stake which cost him £4.7m.

He has since become a minor partner in FSG, which also owns baseball side Boston Red Sox.

In March 2021, RedBird Capital Partners, a private investment firm, bought a stake in FSG for about $735m (£533m).

Fenway have been good owners but this is poor. Testing the waters in terms of sale only leaves the club confused.

I dont think they will sell even a part share.

The club is overvalued and there's simply no middle Eastern buyer .

And no one from middle east or far east finds the city of Liverpool attractive to invest its racist dump with a bad reputation these scousers , Manchester is more cosmopolitan attractive option and bigger city hence why you see man city and utd are attractive options .

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says he watched last year's final defeat by Real Madrid back at the weekend - for the first time.

Vinicius Jr scored the only goal as Real won at the Stade de France, with the Reds denied nine times by a Thibaut Courtois masterclass.

"I realised why I hadn't watched it back before that," said Klopp.

"It was torture; we played a good game, we could have won it but they scored the decisive goal. You could see their experience, how little they lose confidence, they are there for their chance. That is what you can learn from them.

"We are different teams in different times. Let's see who goes through."

Comedy defending by Liverpool tonight.

All over the place.

liVARpool fans thought they were back after beating Newcastle. :)))

Liverpool’s defence got exposed time and time again by 10 men Newcastle. On another day, that game could have been a draw or a defeat for Liverpool.

But Real Madrid do what they always do, which is beat Liverpool. They own the scouters.

Liverpool’s season is over in February. They are in the mud. Let’s see what crybaby Klopp moans about this time. :)))

Klopp is finished.

As I said earlier in the month, Liverpool fans need to detach themselves from this emotional connection they have with him.

Also looks like someone will need to take another holiday :klopp

9 months on from the 2 meeting in the final, and one looks like they don't belong in this competition. Likely, they won't be in it next season. What a fall from grace.

Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid: Jamie Carragher says Reds were 'embarrassing' in Champions League defeat

Jamie Carragher has branded Liverpool's performance in their 5-2 thrashing at the hands of Real Madrid on Tuesday as "embarrassing" and "shambolic".

Liverpool took a 2-0 lead in their Champions League last-16 first leg through Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah after just 14 minutes, but conceded five goals at Anfield in a European game for the first time on their way to a heavy defeat.

Jurgen Klopp's side played Real in the final in Paris just nine months ago but they face exiting the competition at the first knockout round as their disappointing season took another downward turn.

Liverpool are eighth in the Premier League and already out of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup - the two trophies they won last season - while they have now conceded 46 goals in all competitions this term.

Speaking to CBS, Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher said: "I must say, what a performance by Real Madrid, to come to Anfield and do that. I've never seen a team come to Anfield like that on a European night and destroy Liverpool."

But the former Liverpool defender added: "That was shambolic from Liverpool. Embarrassing.

"We've made excuses for them all season and said there's reasons why they're not doing as well as they have done in previous seasons, but that was a disgrace that second half.

"To not even have a chance, to not show any fight after the goals go in, and to lose that second half 3-0 when you're attacking the Kop at 2-2 in a knockout game - absolutely shambolic. I'm talking about defensively shambolic all season."

Great start followed by an awful performance. VVD looks past his best after that fatal injury he suffered some years back where as Gomez is a complete nightmare. The crucial point was when Alisson not for the first time gave away a goal. This guy has got to be one of the most overrated goalkeeper's prone to crucial mistakes. There is no point making great saves only to give it away so often.

In the second half Real went through us like a knife does hot butter. Our awful midfield was no competition for their clinical forwards who made us chase shadows. If this isn't enough John W Henry announces he won't be selling the club not that he ever said otherwise. It was the media putting these word's in to our mouths.

Out of all competition's we only have top four to play for now. Not qualifying for next season's UCL will cause many more problem's like attracting top class players. Walking on with hope in my heart as heartbroken as I am:asghar

"I think Carlo thinks the tie is over, and I think it is as well in the moment, but in three weeks..."

Liverpool have certainly mounted fairytale comebacks before, but while Jurgen Klopp believes his optimism in overturning a three-goal deficit against Real Madrid will return, he will know significant improvements will be needed from Tuesday's 5-2 defeat at Anfield.

The loss - Liverpool's worst at home in Europe - means they have it all to do to reach the quarter-finals of this season's Champions League.

"We will go there and play a football game," Klopp said of the second leg in Madrid against the holders on Wednesday, 15 March.

"It will be a massive challenge. We have to make sure we learn from this game."

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson felt errors throughout the game proved costly against Carlo Ancelotti's men.

"We made too many mistakes around the goals," he added. "When you make too many mistakes, teams like Madrid punish you."

Liverpool have been in situations before where the odds are stacked against them, yet they have found a way to bounce back.

They famously overturned a 3-0 half-time deficit to beat AC Milan and win the Champions League in 2005, and four years ago came back from a 3-0 first-leg loss to beat Lionel Messi's Barcelona 4-0 to reach the Champions League final.

This Liverpool, though, have looked a different side this season. Eighth in the Premier League and out of both domestic cup competitions, they have won just three of their 10 games so far in 2023.

Former England and Newcastle striker Alan Shearer feels the Reds are "a mile away" from what they have been previously.

"Last season must have been very tough physically and mentally," said Shearer, of Liverpool's unsuccessful battle for a quadruple of trophies in the previous campaign.

"It was relentless and perhaps they didn't get the investment with signings. Put all that together and there are excuses for looking physically and mentally tired, but they have been unrecognisable.

"Every single player - bar the keeper - has lost the form. There is an argument to say they have all been a mile away from the standards they have been set."

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said talk of Liverpool getting back totheir best following successive league wins over Everton and Newcastle United had been "nonsense".

"Liverpool, all season, have been an absolute shambles defensively," Carragher said, speaking on CBS.

"This Liverpool defence now can't cope. For years they had six players in front of them who worked harder and smarter than any other team.

"Now that has gone it has completely fallen apart. It's nowhere near good enough."

Former Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana believes the hangover from last season's exertions is still having an effect.

"Last season Liverpool played in every single match possible and that produces a lull," he said on BBC Radio 5 live.

"On the back of a tough season I think you are witnessing too many moments when players are flat. They need to find something in them to go again."

This was just the third time this century Liverpool have shipped five goals in a home game in all competitions
If you hadn't watched the game and just checked the post-match statistics, you would be forgiven for thinking that Liverpool were very unlucky.

The Reds had more possession than Real, more shots on goal and a higher expected goals rating (2.01 to 1.66)

But the statistics do not paint the true picture. After an even first half, Liverpool were comfortably second best after the break, but their defending throughout was poor.

"The second goal is slapstick," Klopp said of Real's equaliser at 2-2, where Alisson hacked a clearance against Vinicius Junior and the ball rebounded past him and into the net.

"[For one of the goals] we have five or six players and no challenge. That can't happen. We were passive until the ball arrived there."

Shearer offered a more blunt assessment.

"They were hopeless at the back," he added. "I was concerned after the Newcastle game because Newcastle created a lot of chances.

"They haven't got the protection they used to have. You can't do that against world-class players."

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said: "It's a reality check.

"At any club, if you concede five goals there's got to be an inquest into why and how? I'm sure Jurgen will do that in the coming days."

The heavy defeat produced some unwanted statistics for Liverpool that make it difficult to see how they can recover:

They are the first team in Champions League history to take a 2-0 lead but then lose the game by a three-goal margin.
They conceded five goals in a European game at Anfield for the first time.
It is now seven successive successive games against Real Madrid without winning.
Mission 'impossible' - but can Liverpool turn the tie around?
In the Champions League knockout stage, the unexpected often does happen.

But Real Madrid are unbeaten at home so far this season and given Liverpool's poor recent record against them, Klopp's side will have to produce something special to turn things around.

"They will have to dust themselves down very quickly," said Lallana.

"It is near on impossible for Liverpool to overturn this deficit."

Shearer added: "It would take a brave man to bet against Real Madrid.

"They are a club with huge experience. They have seen it all and done it all. They know what they have to do."

But but but but but but PL is the best league in the world and Real Madrid would not finish in the top 4 in England.

Real Madrid owns Liverpool. The Egyptian diver will never get his revenge and Real Madrid will always make him cry.

Finished club, finished manager, finished team. :klopp :)))

The club needs a complete overhaul from the owners to the management and squad .

Don't be silly. Yeah we are having a very bad season with everything going wrong. This is the same team that reached four final's last season winning two off them. You are going way over the top calling us "finished" in everything as if we are fighting relegation. There is no harm losing this way to Real Madrid the best team in the world and 14 times UCL champs.

The problem is very simple with Liverpool. We did not spend much at the end of the season or last month when our rival's did hundred's of million's closing the gap on us if not getting ahead. Give JK £400 million net in the summer then you will see we'll be back.

I will say that Salah is nothing without Sadio Mane. The Senegalese never got the praise that he deserved when he was with us. To keep Salah happy and give him a bumper contract it seems that JK decided to sell Mane which was a terrible decision. In Football there are always high's and low's for every club not only us.

Klopp spent heavily in 2018-19 and Liverpool won the league and the UCL within 2 years. Yes it is true that he hasn’t had the financial backing that City, Chelsea and United have had, but he has enough resources to not be 19 points of the league leaders after 22 games.

That is all on Klopp, and his supporters cannot hide behind the lack of funds excuse all the time. Moreover, let’s not pretend that he hasn’t squandered money in the market.

He spent £90m on two average midfielders like Keita (£52m) and Chamberlain (£38m), he spent a club-record £85m on Nunez who has the potential to be a top striker but he is clearly struggling to adapt right now and he was not the right player to fill the massive hole that Mane left.

Similarly, Gakpo hasn’t hit the ground running either. Klopp’s major signings of the past (Salah, Van Dijk, Alisson etc.) had instant impact but he has not been able to replicate that recently.

Liverpool’s position in the table would have looked a lot different had Nunez hit the ground running like Haaland and Jesus.

Klopp finished 7th in his last season at Dortmund and then left. Something similar could happen here. He seems completely out of ideas and excuses and he just looks tired and depressed.

With regards to Mane, Klopp didn’t sell him. Mane demanded to leave because he was growing tired of the lack of respect. On the pitch, he was on par with Salah in terms of performances but he was not given the same star status.

He was also criminally underpaid and earning less than several bench players. It was the club’s fault for taking him for-granted for so long.

Liverpool is back to its default setting of the last 30 years. Last few years was an anomaly. When Klopp leaves don’t expect things to turn around any time soon.

All big clubs go through cycles, Liverpool will probably have to wait for another 10 years to be competitive. Same goes for Chelsea irrespective of how much they are spending.

Now it is Arsenal and Manchester United’s time at the top for the next few years and after several lean years. Even City’s golden era is coming to an end with their stars getting older and Pep reaching the end of his tenure.

Liverpool fans should accept the reality and patiently wait for their next cycle. They haven’t been the same since City stole the league from under their nose on the final day and then Madrid taught them a lesson in the UCL final after the fans and players like Salah ran their mouths and talked about revenge.

Of course, the departure of Mane made things worse because his replacement have failed to reproduce what he did for years.

Instead of complaining about money, Liverpool should identify Klopp’s replacement and look to rebuild the squad over the next few years like Klopp himself did from 2015 to 2018 and Arteta has done for Arsenal over the last two years.

Klopp can do another repair job himself but I don’t think he has the energy left. Both him and Liverpool need a fresh start.

He has spent no way near what others have spent. Another thing is that over the past few seasons other teams have also been as much if not more then 19 points behind us. Look at Arsenal last season.

As I said Klopp is not without fault either then again what manager is? Like all teams he has made poor decisions like selling Mane and awful injuries to VVD after which he has not looked the same. I am not defending the poor decisions he has made.

Where as he has spent it is not fair to over look the departures of Mane and Coutinho. Our buy to sell policy is greatly to be blamed as well when FSG only allow us to buy from sales made most of the time. No other top team does that. Ox was actually doing well before that career threatening injury where as Keita indeed has been awful. I must emphasize this is the same team that did so well last season. You do not become a terrible team after a few months.

I don't think the number 7 signifies anything divine in regards to JK's career as a manager at all. He has every reason to feel upset seeing us eliminated from all tournaments this season and fighting for a top four place. I have touched on Mane being under appreciated to keep Salah happy also insisting even at the time that we sold the wrong player.

Our default setting is winning UCL'S and being the most successful team in the UK. One bad season does not kill a side anymore then one good season makes them great. It is not Man Utd's time until they again win the UCL or EPL where as Arsenal still have a lot to do to over take Man City to win the league this season. No, City's golden era is not coming to an end at all anymore then Chelsea or Man Utd are closer to winning the league. Man City are still the team to defeat in the EPL no doubt about it whatsoever.

They lesson is always to improve financially that will lead to victories on the field of play. We can not compete financially with the likes of Real or other top English sides which is holding us back. Yes Salah was right at the time, nothing wrong in saying that before the match then afterwards if defeated such comments appear to be foolish. The next winning cycle is not far and could even be next season if we make good decisions in the summer.

I think JK deserves at least one more season to prove the doubters wrong after giving the club so much. I want to see the owners give him at least £300 million net then see how he does before calling for his head. We we are not a sacking club like Chelsea. Last season many Arsenal fans wanted Arteta out too now look at him.

Ultimately, it is going way over the top with you saying Liverpool FC are finsihed at everything!

PL is certainly better overall than La Liga, only Real, Barca and maybe Atletico would challenge for the top 6 spots.

Not to mention its quality is brought down by the horrific racism which seems to be justified, such a disgusting and vile league.

Manchester United went to the Camp Nou and outplayed Barcelona who are 8 points clear of Real Madrid. United will also probably beat Barcelona in the 2nd leg. Premier league is always clear.

I thought Man Utd fans used to call the Europa League as not even being worthy of being played. If it was a mickey mouse tournament years back then it must be that now too:asghar

Same Barcelona that couldn't even get out of the group stages, so hyping up uniteds performance vs a weak Barca is funny.

Villarreal finished 7th in La Liga last season and beat both Arsenal and Man United. PL is only ahead in the eyes of delusional fans who don’t watch football outside their league.

Almost every team in La Liga plays excellent football. Technically brilliant league.

PL is certainly better overall than La Liga, only Real, Barca and maybe Atletico would challenge for the top 6 spots.

Not to mention its quality is brought down by the horrific racism which seems to be justified, such a disgusting and vile league.

Sociedad and Betis are playing some really good football right now. They will probably beat Liverpool and Chelsea on current form, especially at home.

Agree with the racism bit. Big issue in Spain and Italy.

Apparently LFC fans were doing fireworks outside the Madrid hotel before the game at 2am

PL is the best league in the world.

Since its inception in 1992

PL teams have won the UEFA Championship 6 times.

PL teams have been runners up in the UEFA Championship final, 9 times.

This means, English PL teams have featured in 15 of the CL finals since 1992, basically 50% of the 30 CL finals (since 1992)

Poor Arsenal lost in the CL final of 05/06. (@Mamoon was still deciding on which PL team to support back then)

:)

LA Liga was the best league until around 2014-15. But I would say that over the last 6-7 years, premier league has replaced LA Liga to become the best league in the world.

PL’s quality has improved because the other leagues can’t compete with its riches.

UK consumers being fleeced with high cable and satellite subs to pay for it all.

Case in point, Everton squandering £500 million on players and look where they are. Money getting chucked around like confetti.

Liverpool's defence has been terrible all season.

Allison has spared their blushes match after match. Yesterday he had a poor game and look at what happens.

Liverpool's defence has been terrible all season.

Allison has spared their blushes match after match. Yesterday he had a poor game and look at what happens.

That's so true, without Allison and Liverpool would be in the bottom half of the league this season.

Liverpool are too lightweight in midfield which is exposing their defence time and time again. Look at Bajcetic who got swatted away like a fly and Fabinho was so slow and cumbersome.

I also think they're gonna need Firmino and Jota in from the start against Real in three weeks time.

A 37-year-old Modric bursting past Fabinho and Bajcetic for Madrid's 5th is as big a red flag about Liverpool's midfield as you'll ever see.

First of all — what a brilliant game that was.
An instant Champions League classic.

Liverpool are a great team (or past great team) that has a number of key players who are approaching the latter part of their careers: Van Dijk, Henderson, Milner, Fabinho, even possibly Salah.

They are proven class players who will still turn on the style occasionally like they did against Everton and Newcastle, but putting together consistent runs of form and/or being able to reliably win crunch games is getting more difficult for them.

It’s a transitional season and a significant squad rebuild will be needed afterwards.

I still think that (given a busy summer transfer window) Klopp will be able to revive the club.

Jurgen must also take responsibility for standing still when the team was doing so well. He did not strengthen the team when they were on top. This allowed other teams who were well behind us to catch up if not surpass us. In defence of Jurgen he was not given the money by FSG to bring in the players he wanted.

There are rumours that FSG are considering ex Barcelona manager Luis Enrique as our next manager should Jurgen be sacked or walk away at the end off the season. Remember, you heard it here first right from the corridors of Anfield if it becomes true:ds

Arsenal and United were not good teams last season. United just won over two legs against the 'La Liga giants' Barca who are 8 points clear of Madrid. Barca conceded only 7 in 22 la liga games but held 4 in 2 games vs united. And United were not even good the 2nd leg.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says it is "clear we have to do something in the summer" amid his side's struggles this season.

The Reds were beaten 5-2 by Real Madrid on Tuesday in the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie.

Liverpool are also eighth in the Premier League - albeit with games in hand on some of their rivals - during an inconsistent campaign.

"We know we have to improve and change things and we will," said Klopp.

"We cannot do it now but it's already clear that we have to do something in the summer. For now, we just have to go through this and fight back."

Liverpool midfielders James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be out of contract in the summer along with forward Roberto Firmino.

A number of players have also been struggling for form this season, with Klopp's side seven points off a top-four spot in the Premier League heading into a game at Crystal Palace (19:45 GMT) on Saturday.

Injuries have also had an impact for the Reds but their exploits are in stark contrast to last season when they played every game possible, making 63 outings in pursuit of the quadruple.

They won the FA Cup and League Cup - competitions they exited at the fourth-round stage this season - but missed out on winning the Champions League and Premier League.

And, while Klopp said "this team has a wonderful history", he added "one of the main reasons" he signed new contract until 2026 was because he knew there would be a period of transition.

"The way that this club is led is by not splashing the money. Our transfers always have to be on point. That makes it really tricky," he said.

"We cannot make four transfers before we know who will leave the club and these kind of things.

"Last year was not a season for a big change. We played until the last moment and, if you want to change at this club, we cannot just bring in players and realise later that no-one wants to leave. It doesn't work like that.

"It's not possible to start it early because we have final after final, played the season until the last minute, played the Champions League final, then we had a short break, then a lot of injuries and then the World Cup."

Klopp's comments follow Liverpool owner John Henry stating he is not selling the Merseyside club.

"We have to make our own plans and that's what we do but based on the way this club is led," said Klopp.

"It's obviously different to other clubs, that's how it is. It worked out so far and we have to see if it will work still or if we have to adapt.

"That's something for us in the offices when we are not on the training pitch and for my conversations with the owners and all these kinds of things."

I wish Jurgen will stop making excuses giving the impression that we won't be spending much. "The way that this club is led is by not splashing the money. Our transfers always have to be on point. That makes it really tricky," he said. Yes absolutely splashing the cash is often the answer when you have not been doing that.

We know the likes of Ox, Milly, Keita, and Matip for starters will be departing. With the transfer window closed at the moment nothing can be started immediately.

0-0 against Crystal Palace.

Awful match and another terrible performance by Liverpool.

Liverpool need 3 MFs for next season to stay competitive. They lack energy and creativity.

Add a new CB to that list too. Matip and Gomez are not up to the standard at all, even VVD has fallen off a cliff.

The gas has run out in midfield that is for everyone to see, Fab, Ox, Keita and even Hendo are not doing the job. The majority of them will rightfully be sold before we bring anyone in. At the back VVD seems spent where as Matip is also likely to be sold. Last seasons exploits could also be contributing to this seasons struggles too considering we didn't do much business last summer or last month. Truthfully, it's gonna take more then one transfer window to sort this mess out even if FSG provide the required funds.

All said, JK deserves the chance to fix all this mess. The league table doesn't lie.

Midfield has no pace at all and looks very one-dimensional.

Salah looks disinterested most of the time, Firminho and several other players are over the hill.

Not great planning from LFC really.

TEAM NEWS
Liverpool v Wolves (20.00 GMT)

Darwin Nunez returns to the Liverpool starting XI tonight, after missing the 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace with a shoulder problem.

His return is one of six changes from that game, with Andy Robertson, James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Cody Gakpo among those benched.

Kostas Tsimikas starts at left-back, while Ibrahima Konate partners Virgil van Dijk in central defence.

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Fabinho, Bajcetic; Elliott, Jota, Salah; Nunez.

Subs: Kelleher, Milner, Firmino, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gakpo, Robertson, Carvalho, Matip.

Up to 6th place after tonight's win over Wolves.

Eventually got the job done, they're a very inconsistent side this year. Wouldn't be surprised if they turn up out of the blue and blow MUFC away on Sunday.

Brazil forward Roberto Firmino is to leave Liverpool when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old has been with the Reds since joining them in a £29m deal from Hoffenheim in June 2015.

Firmino has helped Liverpool win the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and Club World Cup during his time at Anfield.

He has made 353 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 107 goals and providing 70 assists.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had said he wanted Firmino to stay with the club and, while the player had been in discussions over a new contract, he has chosen to move on.

The Brazilian's playing time has been limited recently due to muscle injuries and the arrivals of Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo.

Firmino, who is held in high regard by Reds fans, played in the centre of Liverpool's iconic attacking trio - flanked by Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who left the club to join Bayern Munich last year.

Together they helped Liverpool lift their first English league title in 30 years when they won the Premier League in 2019-20.

Firmino has made 26 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring nine goals and providing four assists.

He missed out on Brazil's squad for the World Cup last year and, when the Premier League resumed after the tournament, had a spell out injured before returning as a substitute in the derby win over Everton on 13 February.

Wow! 7-0 win over ManU. That's some historic trashing.

Looks like Liverpool are finally gelling together after a few false dawns this season. Shame its taken so long otherwise we would see a proper team challenging for the title instead of perennial losers like Arsenal.

I had forgotten I'd even said this :)

Now they're going to go to Bournemouth next Saturday and get restricted to a draw.

You're getting me mixed up with someone else, I'm a Liverpool, not a United fan.

PS: You know who this was aimed at as the title is already in the bag ;-)

Jamie Carragher has labelled Cody Gakpo a "revelation" for his starring role in Liverpool's 7-0 win over Manchester United and feels there are signs of a new front three blossoming.

Good lord that was one helluva beating we gave them!:viru Who could have thought the wealthiest club in the world would be stream rolled like that! Ya know in the old days the teacher would cane an unruly student's behind nice and hard to teach them a lesson. This is exactly what we did to them with a dominant display of quick fire counter attacking and possession. Where are those who said Jurgen should be replaced when I said no give him time he will get it right?

Even more pleasing was Graeme Souness and Jamie Carragher giving hell to that ignorant Phil Neville who forever finds an excuse to belittle Liverpool as he did on Sunday. How this clown said Man Utd were better in the first half also giving the impression that Liverpool were lucky is beyond me. Now we are being told that Man Utd can still win the treble. This is the same treble Liverpool won many years back that the likes of Phil Neville and Man Utd fans mocked.

Gakpo and Nunez who Man Utd both wanted but couldn't afford lay in to them where as Salah owned their back line running ribbon's around them. For once VVD stood tall at the back with big Konate also refusing to give an inch. Over the past few days after a few lucky results Man Utd were due a good pelting in fact a historical thrashing that they will always be reminded about repeatedly from here on in:kohli

Liverpool gave Man Utd a 7-0 battering that they will never forget!!. Man Utd will never be able to avenge this when their noses were properly rubbed on the ground by the mighty Liverpool.

A hugely impressive performance in the second half from Liverpool, an unprecedented hammering for Manchester United, and all in all something of a strange football match: I believe that Liverpool had eight shots on target all game, and seven of these resulted in goals.

It demonstrates really that most footballers on most days of their career, even the top professionals, often fail to convert chances into goals — but when everything clicks at once and all of the chances fly in, then football for once is not the low scoring game that it usually presents itself as.

How good was Salah in this game by the way.

Not sure if “he’s back”, or if this was just a rare glimpse of the old and now largely historic Salah.

But that was an absolutely vintage performance from him. Close to a 10/10 in the second half.

What a Sunday that was. 7-0 annihilation at Anfield - AAA. Absolute ‘MAULING, SMASHED, BRUISED and WRECKED. It was a HUMBLER and it HUMBLED Man United fans especially on Youtube and Social media. See what the words in capitals letters have in common with 7-0? It’s all 7-letter words. Haha!

This will remain and hurt Man UTD and it’s fans for years and years to come.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says he was "surprised" by Roberto Firmino's decision to leave Anfield at the end of the season.

The Brazil forward will end an eight-year stay at Anfield when his contract expires in June.

Firmino, 31, had been in talks over a new contract but has chosen to leave.

"Surprised? Yes, a little bit - it could go two ways and it went one. And I respect that a lot," Klopp said on Friday.

"But it's completely normal in this kind of long relationship that we have and Bobby has with the club."

Firmino scored seven goals in 13 Premier League games prior to the break for the World Cup but suffered a calf injury that kept him out for two months following the domestic restart.

He returned in February's derby win over Everton but has been limited to five substitute appearances with January signing Cody Gakpo preferred up front alongside Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah.

However, he came off the bench to score Liverpool's final goal - and his 108th in 354 Reds appearances - in the 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United on Sunday.

"I loved the reception he got when he came on against United," said Klopp, who added that the striker had told him he now wanted "to bring this wonderful story to a positive end".

Liverpool have won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and Club World Cup during Firmino's time at Anfield, and he can expect an emotional send-off in Liverpool's final home game of the season against Aston Villa on 20 May.

"There's no time for a goodbye or whatever in this moment, there's enough time for that later in the season," Klopp added.

"Whenever he will come back, everybody knows that the song [Reds fans' Bobby Firmino chant] will still be for a long, long time in everybody's ears.

"I think he's one of these players that even when he would come with an opposition team, people would be really happy to see him."

What hibernation are you talking about? Most LFC fans like me take defeat on the chin and celebrate with gusto. You Man Utd fans are in no position to laugh at us seeing your recent record! I know you won the mickey mouse league cup recently too:viru Have you seen the Amitabh film Sattepe Satta!!?:yk2
