Liverpool FC | 2022/23 Season

Mohamed Salah's glaring penalty miss ensured Bournemouth climbed out of the relegation zone after an excellent win which damaged Liverpool's chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League.

The Reds were brought back down to earth after last week's 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United as the Cherries, who started the weekend bottom, did their survival chances a power of good.

Liverpool were punished for poor defending when the unmarked Philip Billing struck from eight yards out for his sixth Premier League goal of the season after fine work by Dango Ouattara.

Virgil van Dijk had a header cleared off the line at 0-0 and substitute Diogo Jota was denied by Neto's fine save before Liverpool won a penalty after the Portugal forward's header was handled by Adam Smith.

But Salah, who became Liverpool's all-time top Premier League scorer with 129 goals last week, blazed the penalty wide much to the delight of Bournemouth's fans.

While the win catapulted Bournemouth to 16th before the 15:00 GMT kick-offs, Jurgen Klopp's side missed the chance to go fourth for the first time this season after a lethargic display.

Having scored seven times in their last match, the Reds failed to register a goal against the worst defence in the Premier League.

Liverpool have made strides in recent weeks but this was a step backwards for a team who face a mountainous task to stay in the Champions League when they go to European champions Real Madrid on Wednesday, looking to claw back a 5-2 deficit.

Their patchy away form - just three wins in 13 league games on the road - continues to hold them back.

With next week's home game with Fulham postponed due to the London club's involvement in the FA Cup followed by the first international break of 2023, this was Liverpool's last game on the Premier League stage for three weeks.

They face back-to-back away games at Manchester City (1 April) and Chelsea (4 April) when they return, followed by a home match with leaders Arsenal (9 April).

Klopp will hope his side have washed this defeat out of their system by then.

As a Man United fan, I am embarrassed that we lost by 7 to this Liverpool side. Finished team and finished manager. Ten Hag got it horribly wrong last week.

I always thought the scoreline flatters Liverpool. Man U just gave up in the second half.

What hibernation are you talking about? Most LFC fans like me take defeat on the chin and celebrate with gusto. You Man Utd fans are in no position to laugh at us seeing your recent record! The mask has slipped nicely here.

"This game was a massive knock," said the Reds boss. "You know how it is with knocks, you have to take them and see how big the scars are and go from there."

I had forgotten I'd even said this :)

Now they're going to go to Bournemouth next Saturday and get restricted to a draw.

Should've been a draw if Salah had scored that penalty. Liverpool predictably inconsistent.

It is hard to believe this is the same Liverpool that confined Man U to utter humiliation with a 7 UP victory.

Either Man U are gutter trash amd worse than Bournemouth, or Bournemouth are better than Liverpool.

Either case, EPL is the greatest league in the world for this very reason - unpredictable.

What's the point of thrashing Man Utd and then next week losing to Bournemouth.

Looking tough for a top 4 place now for LFC.

Jurgen Klopp bemoans 'massive knock' against Bournemouth and admits concern at Liverpool's away form

Jurgen Klopp was left bitterly frustrated by Liverpool's 1-0 loss to relegation-threatened Bournemouth and fears it could leave further scars on his players amid a difficult season.

Philip Billing's first-half strike proved decisive at the Vitality Stadium as Liverpool slumped to their seventh away loss in the Premier League this season, just six days after their 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United at Anfield.

Liverpool missed a string of early chances and then spurned an opportunity to level when Mohamed Salah sent a penalty wide midway through the second period, but overall it was another poor display in a long line of them this season.

"I am very [disappointed]," Klopp said afterwards. "The game was pretty much the opposite of what we wanted to show and do today.

"I think we played, for 95 minutes, the game Bournemouth wanted to play. We had only a few minutes and a few moments when we did what we wanted to actually do.

"In the first half, I think our two or three best moments were similar, finding the half-space and going from there behind the last line. We scored a goal that was disallowed for offside.

"We had other big chances after set-pieces which we didn't use. No-brainers, or whatever, where we have to score.

"But in one of the situations Bournemouth had, going behind our last line, we didn't cover ourselves well enough in those moments and one time Ali [Alisson Becker] couldn't save us."

Of Salah's missed penalty, he said: "It's of course hypothetical, but it looked a little bit for me that, if you score there, it would give us a proper boost, but we didn't and then you could see we were a bit in a rush, and didn't create enough calm attacking moments.

"Bournemouth fought with massive passion and showed their quality, how they kept the ball. We couldn't defend them in the first phase, so we had to track back and defend them there.

"I can't remember big chances for them, but it's still pretty exhausting and then you have a long way back into their box. We lost the game and it's very, very, very frustrating."

Liverpool had 8 shots on target against Manchester United and scored 7 goals.

Liverpool would have scored 3 or 4 (including the penalty) on another day against Bournemouth as well, who were lucky to win. Liverpool just couldn’t take their chances.

It’s a game of taking chances. Simple as that.

The award of liverpools penalty was pathetic, what exactly was difference between that and the 5 handbills vs Arsenal, just shows how poor referees at in the PL.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says that even "if there's only a one percent chance" of his side overturning a 5-2 deficit at Real Madrid that he "would like to give it a try".

The Reds led 2-0 in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie against Real before going on to lose.

The return leg is at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

"I said three weeks ago, Madrid with their result are through to the next round," said Klopp.

"Now we are here three weeks later and we know there's a game to play.

"If there's only a one percent chance, I would like to give it a try. We're here to play an extremely strong opponent and try to win the game.

"As difficult as it is, it's not likely, but possible. For that, we are here, we'll see where it leads us to."

Well you don' support Liverpool, do yo? So we lost to Bournemouth who scored one more goal against Liverpool then Man Utd did.

Mickey mouse league cup for which Liverpool did a parade last season. :)))

That was for the FA Cup too. Additionally it was Man Utd fans that used to call it the Mickey mouse cup when Sir Alex was your boss:ua Now that you have won it is a genuine trophy. Lets see if you can win the FA Cup and Europa League too winning the junior treble that we did many years back. Remember??:yawn

3-0 tonight?

Or the end of any trophy chances this season?

Crashing out of the Champions League.

A season without any trophy and possibly out of the Champions League places.

Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic will miss the rest of the season because of a thigh injury.

The 18-year-old Spaniard has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Anfield, making 19 appearances and scoring his first senior goal at Aston Villa in December.

He suffered an adductor problem in training and was ruled out of Wednesday's Champions League defeat by Real Madrid.

"It's very sad to say goodbye to this amazing season for me," Bajcetic said.

"But I understand this is part of football and will only make me stronger physically and mentally.

"I would also like to say thank you to you Reds for all the support through the season and I assure you I will do my best to be back stronger than ever."

Liverpool yet to open contract talks with James Milner despite Jurgen Klopp wanting him stay.

Signed 1 year deal on reduced terms last June & plans to continue (ideally at #LFC) but unless club act will be free to move elsewhere in summer.

On his hopes to finish strongly, Klopp said: "Historically we have finished strong. We have too.

"Last year we nearly had four trophies then this year clearly this trophy was gone early.

"It’s a proper thing to bring us down to ground again. It underlines it was never easy what we’ve done before.

"If you do only a little bit less, for whatever reason, it’s gone.

"Now it’s clear, top four is the one thing we really can go for. We don’t have a perfect position to fight for it. We have to win a lot of games.

"The more we win, the more pressure we put on those above us. A lot of talk now but it’s all about how we perform and how we get into this chasing mood and go from there."

Looks like they need a clearout.

Several players over the hill, several players not giving 100%.

The big question is will Klopp survive the cull?

Manchester City have "strongly condemned" the actions of those responsible for damage to the Liverpool team coach on its journey back from the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The club said an object was thrown towards the coach in a residential area after City's 4-1 Premier League win.

City and Liverpool will support Greater Manchester Police's investigation.

"Incidents of this kind are totally unacceptable," the Premier League champions said in a statement.

"We strongly condemn the actions of the individual(s) responsible."

The club also said they were "disappointed" by "inappropriate chants" by their fans during the game.

The chants taunting Liverpool fans were heard during the first half of the match.

City's statement added: "We regret any offence these chants may have caused and will continue to work with supporter groups and officials from both clubs to eradicate hateful chanting from this fixture."

The Premier League condemned the chanting and said it was "treating the issue of tragedy chanting as a priority and as a matter of urgency".

October's reverse fixture between the two clubs at Anfield was also overshadowed by similar 'tragedy chanting'.

What is 'tragedy chanting'?

An image also showed damage to the City windscreen after their 1-0 defeat, with detectives investigating a complaint of alleged criminal damage

In 2018, City's bus was attacked before a Champions League quarter-final, when bottles, cans and flares were thrown.

City manager Pep Guardiola said members of the Anfield crowd threw coins at him during October's league meeting, following which he apologised for supporter chants which referenced the Hillsborough and Heysel tragedies.

Last month, Liverpool and Manchester United managers Jurgen Klopp and Erik ten Hag called for an end to "tragedy chanting" in a joint statement before the two sides met.

In November, the Football Association had expressed concerns over the rise of "abhorrent chants" related to stadium tragedies - including by fans of City and United on visits to Anfield.

In February, Manchester United and Leeds United "strongly condemned" chants about historic tragedies when they met at Elland Road.

Ninety-seven Liverpool fans lost their lives as a result of a crush at an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest, at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough stadium, on 15 April 1989.

It remains the UK's worst sporting disaster, with a jury at an inquest later ruling that the fans were unlawfully killed.

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz will make his return from injury against Leeds at Elland Road on 17 April, says manager Jurgen Klopp.

Diaz, 26, has been out since October with a knee problem.

The Colombia international has resumed full training but is unlikely to be risked against Arsenal on Sunday.

"Again, it looks good, everything is fine, but it was a long, long injury and so we have to be careful," said Klopp.

"The plan with Luis is that he will be available 100% for Leeds. We will probably not involve him for Sunday."

Midfielder Thiago Alcantara is set to be available against the Premier League leaders this weekend after two months out with a hip injury.

Defender Virgil van Dijk is also in the squad after missing the midweek goalless draw with Chelsea through illness.

"Thiago looks slightly different. He was not out that long, trained now three, four times with the team and might be available but we have to check how he feels today," added Klopp.

"Virgil, completely normal, was back in training."

Liverpool players 'are not worse, they've just played worse'

Liverpool have challenged for the Premier League title in three of the past four seasons, winning it for the first time in 2020, but this term they are well off the pace in eighth place.

The Reds are 29 points behind leaders Arsenal having lost nine times in 28 matches. They have not lost more league games in any of Klopp's six full seasons in charge.

"It is one of these moments where it is really not good," Klopp said. "You get in this whirlwind and it sucks you in that direction and all of a sudden it's like 'Wow, where are we?'

"[But] I am not a worse manager than last year, definitely not. It doesn't mean the outcome is good enough, not at all. But I'm not worse.

"And the players are not worse players. They've just played worse. That's definitely the case."

Andy Robertson appeared to be struck in the jaw by the assistant referee at half-time of Liverpool's clash with Arsenal.

Linesman Constantine Hatzidakis was heading towards referee Paul Tierney just after he blew up for half-time, carrying the ball with him. Liverpool star Robertson approached Hatzidakis and appeared to grab the official as he walked across the pitch.

Hatzidakis reacted angrily to that though and moved his arm back in what appeared to an elbowing motion towards Robertson's face. The Scotland international was left furious, with Liverpool players surrounding the trio of match officials as they attempted to leave the Anfield pitch.

Robertson, Diogo Jota and Jordan Henderson remonstrated with Hatzidakis and Tierney as they left the pitch. The Reds left-back was then booked by Tierney, to the anger of Curtis Jones, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Henderson and Jota.

Eventually, the quartet were led away by a member of Liverpool's coaching staff. Sky co-commentator Jamie Carragher gave the first indication of what had happened, tweeting: "Linesman elbow on Robertson!"

According to Sky Sports reporter Geoff Shreeves, Robertson was furious as he left the pitch. Shreeves claimed the Scot said: "he’s just elbowed me in the throat, the linesman has elbowed me in the throat."

While Robertson appeared to be the victim of the incident, Roy Keane blasted the Liverpool star at half-time. He accused the left-back of being a "big baby".

"Do you know what? Does he grab the linesman first? I’m not sure, but Robertson is then complaining. He should be more worried about his defending. Do you know what he is, that Robertson?" Keane told Sky Sports

"I’ve watched him a number of times, he is a big baby. That’s what that guy is. Just concentrate on the game and get on with your defending. He does grab the linesman first."

Arsenal had quickly gone two goals ahead, with Gabriel Martinelli opening the scoring after just eight minutes. The winger then turned provider, sending in a wonderful cross for Gabriel Jesus to head in the Gunners' second.

But an incident involving Granit Xhaka fired up the Anfield crowd from its slumber. Mohamed Salah then pulled a goal back for the hosts, but missed a penalty in the second-half after the incident involving Robertson.

Refereeing body PGMOL will investigate after Liverpool's Andy Robertson appeared to be elbowed in the chin by assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis.

Robertson approached the official angrily at the end of the first half against Arsenal and appeared to shove him as he passed, with Hatzidakis raising an elbow which hit Robertson.

The Scot reacted furiously and, along with several team-mates, approached referee Paul Tierney, who booked 29-year-old Robertson.

Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane called the Reds player a "big baby" for his reaction.

"Robertson should be more worried about his defending," said Keane. "Just get on with the game. He grabs the linesman first."

Robertson could be in big trouble if the incident is investigated further. Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic is currently serving an eight-game ban for pushing referee Chris Kavanagh in their FA Cup loss at Manchester United on 19 March.

PGMOL's statement said they were "aware of an incident involving assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis and Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson at half-time during the Liverpool v Arsenal fixture at Anfield."

It added: "We will review the matter in full once the game has concluded."

'We showed character'
FT: Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

Liverpool

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold to Sky Sports: "Intense. Very good game of football. Both sides played great football at times. We didn’t start like we wanted to but we showed character. We had a huge chance to win it at the end but we’ll take a point.

"We lacked intensity and weren’t compact enough as a team [at the start]. Towards the end of the first half we started playing the way we wanted to and definitely in the second half. Against a team like that you’ll get punished for not starting quickly enough."

On his clash with Granit Xhaka: "I think a little bit of fire in a game like that there’s nothing wrong with it. He nudged me off the ball so it’s a natural reaction to do it back. It got the crowd going."

"Every game we want three points. Disappointed to not get it today but there are lessons in there."

I know people have criticised the Liverpool midfield, but that defence is a shambles.

All of them running around like headless chickens in the first half especially Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool have made Chelsea's Mason Mount, 24, a priority midfield target this summer after pulling out of the race to sign his England team-mate Jude Bellingham, 19, from Borussia Dortmund.(Football.London)

I see they are also linked with Declan Rice again.

He'd be a great signing for them, but will he choose Liverpool over the teams who have qualified for the Champions League.

Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo are on Liverpool's shortlist of Jude Bellingham alternatives, according to Sky Germany, as the club looks for midfield reinforcements.

Liverpool have ended their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund's teenage midfielder over the German club's £100m asking price.

Although they are long-time admirers of Bellingham, Liverpool believe such a big outlay on just one player is not the right strategy to rectify the drop-off in form they've suffered this season.

Liverpool will be active in this summer's window as they look to overhaul their squad and are targeting at least two new midfielders.

Sky Germany report that along with Rice and Caicedo, the Reds will be looking at Inter's Nicolo Barella, Wolves' Matheus Nunes and Bayern Munich's Ryan Gravenberch.

Jurgen Klopp said last week that the club will improve their on-field chances with smart recruitment - but said now is not the time to focus on the title plans.

"Whatever we do next year will never be enough from people's point of view and your [the media's] point of view," he said.

"But yes, with smart recruitment we will improve - definitely. That is the plan. We cannot make 24 changes and say, 'here we go' - not even 10 - but it is just that we have to make changes, smart changes, and then we go again.

"We have other moments when we think about what happens next year but this is not the moment."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has compared talk of big-money transfers with a five-year-old asking for a Ferrari for Christmas.

Despite being heavily linked with a move, the Reds will not pursue signing England midfielder Jude Bellingham because of the money involved.

Any move for the 19-year-old Borussia Dortmund player could cost in excess of £100m.

"We cannot have six players in a summer, everyone for £100m," he said.

The German added: "We are not children; when you ask a five-year-old what they want for Christmas and they say a Ferrari, you wouldn't say 'oh, that's a good idea'.

"You would say 'no, that is too expensive and anyway, you cannot drive it'. If this kid is then unhappy their whole life because he cannot get a Ferrari, it would be a really sad life.

"You look what you can do, and you work with that.

"What we need and what we want, we try absolutely everything to get it, but there are moments when you have to accept that this or that is not possible for us - you step aside and do different stuff."

Liverpool will have Luis Diaz available when they face Leeds United at Elland Road on Monday (20:00 BST).

The Reds, eighth in the table, have won just one of their past five Premier League games.

Klopp says he expects Leeds to come out fighting, particularly after the "proper knock" they faced in Sunday's 5-1 home defeat by Crystal Palace.

"We expect them to be on their toes, proper atmosphere," said Klopp.

"We have to build on two games with good moments. We will try to do that. We have nothing to lose, we have to try new things; everything is on the table. I'm looking forward to the game. Leeds will go with all they have. It will never be an easy game."

On Thursday, the Football Association said it would not be taking any further action against assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis over an incident involving Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

Hatzidakis had been stood down while an investigation was held, after he made contact with Robertson's chin when the player approached him at the end of the first half at Anfield.

"I think it has been dealt with really well," said Klopp.

"I wasn't aware of it during the game; I spoke to Robbo and the other guys, not the assistant, but now we can carry on."

Meanwhile, Liverpool have been fined £37,500 after players surrounded referee Simon Hooper during their 4-1 defeat by Manchester City on 1 April.

A number of players protested that City midfielder Rodri should have had a second yellow card - and so been sent off - for a trip on Cody Gakpo.

Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool win at Leeds was best performance of season

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp felt his side produced their best performance of the season as they ruthlessly took apart struggling Leeds United.

The Reds scored six goals from seven shots on target, with Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota both netting twice.

Klopp's side have beaten Bournemouth 9-0 and Manchester United 7-0 this season but the German believes the display at Elland Road is their best.

"[I am] really happy about that game," he told Sky Sports.

"I think we forced a lot of errors, [scored] sensational goals, counter-pressing-wise it was the best for, I want to say, decades. My favourite part was in the 92nd minute - four players chased the poor boy on the ball from Leeds.

"I think it is the best game we played this season, in different aspects."

Liverpool 3-2 Nottingham Forest: Klopp believes things have changed for his side

It is a measure of Jurgen Klopp's assessment of Liverpool's season so far that he interrupted a question in his post-match news conference after the 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest to ask the assembled media a question.

"When was the last time?" he said. "Two wins in a row. Does anybody know?"

The answer was last month, before the international break, which included that 7-0 annihilation of Manchester United.

They also did it in February, when they won at Newcastle immediately after coming out on top in the most recent Merseyside derby.

Evidently, those successes have been shoved to the back of Klopp's mind in the search for solutions to results like the 3-0 defeats at Brighton and Wolves, the loss at Bournemouth and the battering Liverpool took at Manchester City only 21 days ago.

"That is not too long ago," was his response when he digested the reply to his interruption. "I thought it was last year."

The point of the initial question had been to try and establish if anything had dramatically changed from the point Liverpool found themselves two goals down at home to Arsenal on 9 April.

And whether anything specific had triggered an upturn in fortune that has followed the draw from that comeback with two wins to allow Liverpool fans to look up the table, not down.

The Reds are three points off fifth-placed Tottenham, on level games, but with a better goal difference. It is now four matches unbeaten, with back-to-back victories following two draws, and represents their joint-best run of an inconsistent campaign.

"Things have changed," agreed Klopp. "How we defend is much better, ball-orientated and being compact.

"I saw a lot of top counter-pressing today. That, for us, is super important. We are much clearer in that department. It feels like it changed.

"If you are solid, aggressive and positive in your defending, you can build on that.

"For me, it is the first time this season we have that. Late, but hopefully not too late."

If Spurs are in the hunt for a Champions League place, it can easily be argued, Liverpool, who are six points off the top four, are as well.

They might have to win at least five and possibly all seven of their remaining games. But Manchester United, Newcastle and Tottenham have difficult games in the run-in and all is not lost.

Klopp said in his programme notes that it "makes no sense" given the season Liverpool are having to try and extrapolate a measure for the remainder of the season from an individual result.

Nevertheless, it does feel as though Liverpool, finally, are beginning to get on a roll.

"The boys are not silly," he said. "They know we were not perfect but they are really happy because we got three super important points.

"I think things have changed but for consistency we have to keep going."

Found some form recently and are now up to 5th place in the table.

Defensively still a mess but always a threat going forward.

They just keep on winning, helped today by Spurs being Spursy

We are obviously in a good run and if we maintain our form over the rest of the games then we'll be fine but I can't shake this feeling that they'll win all their games which leaves us with a smaller margin for error

They also seem to be getting some favourable decisions too which is helping them (Trent handball against Leeds, Thiago handball against West Ham, Jota avoiding red card etc)

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says referee Paul Tierney appears to have something "against" his team after a remarkable ending to their 4-3 win over Tottenham.

Diogo Jota scored an injury-time winner for the Reds just 99 seconds after Richarlison made it 3-3 - with Liverpool having led 3-0 inside 15 minutes.

Klopp was furious with Spurs being awarded a free-kick which led to their equaliser and ran to scream at the fourth official after the winner, but hurt his leg in front of the Tottenham bench.

He was shown a yellow card by the referee after his celebration.

"We have our history with Tierney, I really don't know what he has against us," Klopp told Sky Sports. "He has said there [are] no problems but that cannot be true.

"How he looks at me, I don't understand it. In England nobody has to clarify these situations, it's really tricky and hard to understand.

"What he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not OK."

PGMOL, the body responsible for Premier League referees, said: "PGMOL is aware of the comments made by Jurgen Klopp after his side's fixture with Tottenham Hotspur.

"Match officials in the Premier League are recorded in all games via a communications system.

"Having fully reviewed the audio of referee Paul Tierney from today's fixture, we can confirm he acted in a professional manner throughout including when issuing the caution to the Liverpool manager.

"So, therefore, we strongly refute any suggestion that Tierney's actions were improper."

Former England striker Alan Shearer told BBC Match of the Day: "Paul Tierney could have sent Diogo Jota off and he [Klopp] isn't too quick to mention that.

"Jurgen Klopp was lucky, when he went to the fourth official, just to get the yellow card and it's not the first time he has done it."

On his injury, Klopp told BBC Sport: "I'm not sure if it's the hamstring, it could be the adductor but I got punished.

"I turned around for the celebration because the fourth official got nothing wrong the whole time.

"I didn't say anything bad, I gave a look which is bad enough. The hamstring or whatever the muscle [is] gave up in that moment. That's fair."

The injury did not stop Klopp going to celebrate in front of the Kop afterwards as the Reds overtook Spurs to go fifth in the table.

The German's disagreement with Tierney appears to date back several years.

In 2020 Tierney reportedly told Klopp to "get over it" after the referee admitted he had missed a foul on Georginio Wijnaldum in a game against Aston Villa.

A year later Klopp approached Tierney and said "I have no problem with any referees, only you", after Tottenham's Harry Kane escaped a red card before Liverpool's Andrew Robertson did see red in a 2-2 draw.

In January this year after a loss to Brentford, Klopp said he had approached the officials - including Tierney - to discuss decisions made during the game.

"That's exactly the same as I would talk to my microwave, you get no response, really, it's always the same," he told beIN Sports.

Earlier this month, Tierney booked Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson after an incident involving assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis.

Klopp was not the only manager furious with the officials at Anfield, with Spurs interim boss Ryan Mason also livid.

Match-winner Jota was fortunate to only be booked for a high boot that cut Oliver Skipp's face in the 81st minute and Mason called for answers.

"I need an explanation," he told BBC Sport. "I want to know why the referee on the pitch didn't see it, but also why an experienced one in the VAR room can't.

"Honestly, it's probably the clearest red card you will see on the football pitch. It endangered the opponent, Skipp needs stitches and Jota has scored the goal when he shouldn't be on the pitch."

However, Klopp was not sympathetic to Mason's views despite his own criticism of the referee.

"I understand that. Ryan has to worry about other stuff," he said. "They can't just counter-attack, they have to play better football with that team.

"Diogo Jota has the foot high but he's not going for the head. I heard Oliver Skipp could've had a red card [for an earlier tackle on Luis Diaz]. Did he speak about that as well?

"Wanting Diogo Jota off the pitch, worry about other stuff."

Shearer told Match of the Day: "That is endangering an opponent and Jota was lucky not to get a red card."

Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool boss says Chelsea managers given impossible job by club's transfer policy

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool will not repeat Chelsea's mass recruitment mistakes as he prepares to enter the transfer market this summer.

Since Todd Boehly's takeover of the club, Chelsea have smashed the British transfer record, spent over £600m on transfers for 17 players, and sacked two managers in Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter.

Despite seemingly limitless funds at their disposal, Chelsea's transfer policy has been more of a poisoned chalice, undoubtedly contributing to the downfall of Potter and the club's ongoing troubles under Frank Lampard, with the Blues languishing in 12th in the Premier League.

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, Klopp revealed he empathised with Chelsea's plight but, ahead of spearheading Liverpool's summer transfer business, also expressed happiness at seeing their big-money spending strategy fail.

"We will do business and I understand that football is crazy, it always is," Klopp said. "It means that because Liverpool is doing well, we need five, six or seven players.

"I feel a little bit for Chelsea to be honest because they are a top, top team. But it's good to see that you can't just bring top players together and hope it works out.

"You have to bring a team and that's what their guys [the owners] there [at Chelsea] underestimated and gave their coaches an impossible job to do.

"You cannot have two dressing rooms; you cannot train on two pitches. You have to have team spirit. That's the only reason why I'm happy about [Chelsea's failure].

"Chelsea will be fine because they will be fine in the end and be incredibly strong. It's an example at the highest level where you can't do it like that. You have to bring in the right players and build a new team. This team had a sensational story, now we write a new story."

Klopp insists his strong relationship with Liverpool's principal owner John W. Henry and director Mike Gordon protect against Chelsea's mistakes being repeated on Merseyside.

"We have a really good relationship, he [John W. Henry] is a really good guy," Klopp added.

"He cares a lot about us but the real work starts with Mike Gordon. John is above all of us. We have the work to do on the next level below and it's all fine."

BREAKING: #BHAFC are getting closer to an agreement with James Milner.

Former #LFC teammate Adam Lallana has played a role in convincing him to join.

Liverpool will play the national anthem before their game against Brentford on Saturday, despite saying they know some fans "have strong views on it".

The club's supporters booed 'Abide With Me' and 'God Save the Queen' before last season's FA Cup final.

The national anthem is being played at top-flight matches on Saturday to mark the coronation of King Charles III.

Liverpool said it would be played "in recognition of the Premier League's request to mark the coronation".

The club added: "It is, of course, a personal choice how those at Anfield on Saturday mark this occasion and we know some supporters have strong views on it."

The Premier League strongly advised clubs across this weekend's matches to mark the coronation in some way and suggested some options, with the national anthem being one - although there was no mandate to do so.

The other games in the top flight on Saturday see Bournemouth host Chelsea, Manchester City play Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur face Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers host Aston Villa.

Speaking about the booing of the national anthem at last season's FA Cup final at Wembley, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said it was "not something I enjoyed".

He added: "It's always best to ask the question - why does this happen? They wouldn't do it without a reason."

In a news conference on Friday, Klopp said: "The club's position is my position. This is definitely a subject I can't have a proper opinion about because I am from Germany and we don't have a king or a queen.

"I'm pretty sure a lot of people in this country will enjoy the coronation, some will maybe not be interested and some will not like it. That's all I can say about it."

In the Women's Super League, the Football Association is believed to have given clubs suggestions on how they can celebrate the coronation, including playing the national anthem before kick-off, but decisions will be taken by each individual team.

Liverpool Women are likely to join the men's side in playing the anthem before their WSL game against Manchester City at Prenton Park on Sunday.

Why do Liverpool fans boo the national anthem?

John Gibbons from Liverpool fan podcast The Anfield Wrap says the club's fans "don't appreciate these celebrations being forced on us".

Liverpool supporters have a history of booing the national anthem - it also happened at last season's Carabao Cup final and the 2012 FA Cup final.

Fans have cited government plans to leave the city to "managed decline" in the 1980s and the cover-up which followed the Hillsborough disaster as reasons for what Gibbons has called a "disconnect" from the country and royal family.

"Different people will have different views but, generally, Liverpool is out of step with the rest of the country in that we'd prefer to be a republic," he told BBC Sport.

"It's galling when the country is going through what it is. There will be foodbanks outside the ground when millions are being spent on the coronation in London.

"There are people in this city who can't afford to eat when millions are being spent on putting a crown on someone's head, it's a preposterous situation.

"I don't think the club should have done it. They should have stood strong but are kicking it on to the supporters.

"The fans will refuse to back down and it will mean them being criticised. People should think why are they being made to do something they don't want to do."

Another win.

Not at their best but enough to beat Brentford 1 0.

Just 1 point behind Man Utd now.

I think in the end Liverpool will end with Europa league which their fans should enjoy as at one point looks like they were getting no europe.

If Liverpool sort their midfield (3 midfielders) in summer they will be closest challenges to City fir title next season

Come on Liverpool! Lets win the remaining games to get the best chance of top four.

I won't say its done and dusted. ;-)

7 wins in a row for Liverpool, finishing the season very strongly and pushing United and Newcastle very close for top 4 after a horrific season start.

Does this bode well for next season?

I think if Newcastle drop points to Brighton, or man utd do vs Bournemouth then Liverpool will finish top 4.

Liverpool need top 4, purely because the extra money will help their midfield rebuild.

If Liverpool get MacAlister, mount and ward prowse who they have been linked with in summer. They will be main challengers to City next summer.

James Milner, Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all leave Liverpool at the end of the season, the club has confirmed.

All four players' contracts expire this summer.

They were all part of the side that won the Champions League in 2019 and Premier League in 2019-20.

Klopp open to strengthening Liverpool defence

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has not ruled out signing a defender in the summer if the opportunity arises.

All the focus has been on reinforcing an underperforming midfield which is losing James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita next month but the Reds boss is still looking elsewhere.

“We look in all departments apart from goalkeeper at the moment,” he said.

“Yes, if there is a good one out there, I would not deny it.”

Liverpool will have already done a lot of groundwork under departing sporting director Julian Ward but the club have yet to announce a successor, although former Wolfsburg chief Jorg Schmadtke has emerged as the frontrunner.

“I cannot speak about that but if it happens, it would not be a ‘Jurgen Klopp signing’ because we are both German or both know each other. That would have nothing to do with it,” added the manager.

“I know he is a good guy and a smart guy. Very good at what he did in Germany, definitely, very successful.

“We could talk about (Klopp’s former sporting director at Borussia Dortmund) Michael Zorc: similar age group, similar situation, just a bit longer in retirement I know him much better.

“There are some good sporting directors in Germany you wouldn’t believe.”

Firmino's fitting farewell

This was a costly two points dropped by Liverpool, who really needed to win after Manchester United edged to a victory against Bournemouth that may be the key to sealing a top-four place.

The Reds came into the contest on the back of a resurgence in form, winning their last seven league games to spark hopes of playing in Europe's elite club competition next season.

But they trailed for a large part of the game against Villa and needed the intervention of substitute Firmino, who set the place rocking with his leveller in front of the Kop.

The Brazil forward will leave the club at the end of the season and has provided plenty of memorable moments in a red shirt but he and his team-mates could not find a winner despite 10 minutes of added on time.

James Milner was also given a generous send-off in his final game at Anfield at full-time but Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who are also leaving, missed out through injury.

The goal was Liverpool's 99th in all competitions but their problems have been at the back as they again failed to keep a clean sheet and conceded a 43rd league goal this season - the most in a full campaign under Klopp.

Luis Diaz headed wide in the best chance of a poor first half, while Salah and the in-form Trent Alexander-Arnold both fired straight at Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez before Firmino's late intervention.

Virgil van Dijk is "very excited" about the future for Liverpool despite the club looking like they will miss out on the Champions League next season.

The Reds drew 1-1 with Aston Villa, leaving Manchester United and Newcastle United needing one point from two games to finish in the top four.

But Van Dijk does not feel missing out on the top four will make it more difficult to reinvigorate the squad.

At least four players will leave a team requiring a rebuild this summer.

Firmino's Liverpool farewell will see Reds 'rebuild'

Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all depart the club and were given a guard of honour by their team-mates after Saturday's game against Villa at Anfield.

Liverpool were interested in signing Borussia Dortmund's Jude Bellingham but ruled out making a move for the England midfielder because a deal in excess of £100m would be too expensive.

They have been heavily linked with Brighton's Argentina World Cup-winning midfielder Alexis Mac Allister for around £70m.

Centre-back Van Dijk said: "Everyone knows we have been going through a bit of a transition and if I am a player on the rise and have options to go to the next step and Liverpool is knocking on my door, I would be very interested.

"I don't think it [finishing outside of top four] will change much, but if someone wants to play Champions League no matter what, that is their ambition."

Klopp said after the game: "We will make it [the Europa League] our competition. I am not that spoiled."

'Intense' pre-season coming up
Liverpool were on the cusp of immortality last season but agonisingly missed out on a Quadruple of trophies and they have failed to hit those heights this term.

They will end the campaign without silverware and a run of seven straight victories in the league looks to have come too late.

The side sit in fifth place, three points adrift of the two teams immediately above them, and face relegated Southampton on the final day.

Liverpool have a training camp in Germany scheduled for pre-season, as well as a trip to Singapore, where they will face Leicester City and Bundesliga club Bayern Munich.

"I am very excited [for the future], especially next season," said Netherlands skipper Van Dijk. "That feeling came a couple of months ago when we turned the page.

"There is still a lot to work on but now we have the full pre-season to work on it and that is the plan.

"What I am hearing is that it is going to be a very intense pre-season with a lot of physical work, a lot of tactical work and trying to get ready for a tough season. That is very exciting.

"Players are leaving, hopefully players can come in for the start of pre-season. Everyone who can come in and improve the football club will help all of us and push us all.

"The focus for next season will be to make sure everyone is ready and can contribute. It doesn't matter how old you are, you have to perform."

The money generated from EL is pretty poor, so FSG are going to have to invest a lot themselves here so that Liverpool can rebuild its midfield in the summer. Otherwise they won't get back to where they have been in last 5 years.

Fabinho has admitted he and his fellow teammates were caught off guard by a confirmed Liverpool exit, and why the player in question was souring on life at Anfield has been revealed.

After a season that promised much and only delivered the Community Shield, major changes are afoot on Merseyside this summer. The first is behind the scenes, with German sporting director, Jorg Schmadtke, on the cusp of joining.

The 59-year-old will arrive on an initial short-term basis and run the rule over Liverpool’s transfer dealings this summer. German outlet BILD recently revealed two and possibly three of four potential Bundesliga signings are possible.

Elsewhere, the midfield overhaul is already in full swing, with Alexis Mac Allister agreeing to join from Brighton.

Further midfield additions will follow with Arthur Melo, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all departing. However, arguably the biggest loss to Jurgen Klopp’s side is the exit of Roberto Firmino.

The Brazilian, 31, will leave Liverpool after a glittering and trophy-laden eight-year stint with the Reds.

Firmino’s exit has already been confirmed by the club and the frontman was visibly emotional once the full time whistle blew during his final home game against Aston Villa last weekend.

Liverpool have already prepared for life after Firmino through the signings of Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo. A new frontman is not understood to be on their radar this summer.

However, that’s not stopped Firmino’s exit taking the Liverpool squad by surprise.

“We saw that he was not happy” – Fabinho

Indeed, speaking to Sky Sports News, fellow Brazilian Fabinho admitted he and his Liverpool teammates “didn’t expect” Firmino to leave. Firmino’s contract will expire on June 30.

The decision to part ways and not push for a new contract is understood to have been fuelled by Firmino himself. His game-time had been slashed over the last two seasons, while injuries had also begun to blight his career.

Fabinho revealed the once-rarely injured Firmino struggled with being unable to help his teammates while resigned to the treatment table.

Combined with the new additions being favoured by Klopp, Fabinho concluded Firmino believed he “had to go” for the benefit of all involved.

“This season, we were always asking him when he would sign a new contract: ‘come on, we want you to sign and stay with us.’ We didn’t expect him to go,” said Fabinho.

“He’s 31 years old so he has a lot to do. He can still play his best football at that age, he’s young.

“We didn’t expect this decision to be made but he had to go and sometimes we saw that he was not happy because of the injuries as well. He’s someone who usually doesn’t get injured and he struggled a little bit with the injuries.

“We already know he won’t stay, it was an emotional week for all of us and the only thing is I wish the very best for him and his family.”

On the subject of where Firmino might go next, all manner of clubs including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan have been linked.

Alisson’s fluke goal saved them from Europa in 2021, they didn’t have such luck this time.

Nevertheless, they have played really well over the last two months and should be fighting for the title next season. It is a very important summer for Klopp.

I think if Liverpool can sort the midfield and the targets they have seem to point towards that then they'll be very much in a title race next season

Agree 100% if they sort their midfield out, they will be man city's main challengers next season.

Liverpool look set to miss out on their pre-season plans in the south of Germany due to the local community not wanting the club in the area.

Jurgen Klopp wanted the club to set up base this summer at the Tegernsee training camp in the Bavarian region of Germany. The picturesque base is around an hour’s drive away from Munich on the banks of Lake Tegernsee in the Bavarian Alps which the Reds last visited for pre-season in the summer of 2017.

The Reds had planned to stay in the five-star Uberfahrt hotel and to use the training facilities of FC Rottach in Rottach-Egern. However, those plans look set to be thrown out the window due to local unhappiness about the trip.

It is claimed by German outlet Bild that the local community was left unhappy by the Reds last visit six years ago. Specifically, there was unhappiness about the cleanliness that the facilities were left in alongside the condition of the pitch.

It has been claimed by reports in Germany that Klopp wanted to take his squad back to the area this summer but looks set to be frustrated with a change of plans now required.

Further to that, a hearing in a Munich district court at the time decided that Liverpool had to pay out €3k (£2.6k) for damage caused to a press tent during their trip. Mirror Football has contacted Liverpool for comment.

The report adds that Bayern Munich will use those facilities including the same luxury and training facilities between 15-20 July. The facilities are clearly in high demand among top football clubs with Thomas Tuchel sharing the same idea as Klopp.

Ironically, Liverpool are due to play Bayern Munich in pre-season. The two sides are set to meet in Singapore on 2 August, four days after the Reds play Leicester City in the same nation.

Liverpool often begin their pre-season preparations with a training retreat in central Europe before embarking on a pre-season tour – usually either of the US or the Far East.

This is a massive summer for the Reds after a hugely disappointing campaign in which they finished without major silverware and have also missed out on a Champions League place. Klopp will be intent on bolstering his squad over the close-season with multiple signings to bridge the gap.

'We will be contenders again' - Klopp after Saints thriller

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes his side "will absolutely be a contender again" as the Reds' largely miserable season ended with a 4-4 draw at bottom club Southampton.

Liverpool were chasing a quadruple last term, winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup but finishing one point behind champions Manchester City and losing the Champions League final.

This campaign the Reds finished fifth - despite being unbeaten in their final 11 matches - and will not be playing in the Champions League next season for the first time since 2016-17.

"There were moments during this season where you thought it [the struggle] would be four years long," said Klopp.

"Imagine if we were our normal self [earlier in the season], which we absolutely will be next season and we will be a contender again.

"The last 11 games helped us to realise that again."

That would be a brilliant signing for Liverpool. They would need another 2 midfield signings on top of that.

Bellingham would have been a great addition but priced out. I would still take Bellingham plus one midfielder over MacAllister and two midfielders.

Liverpool owners would never put cash up for Bellingham. The clubs better off just getting 2 more PL proven midfielders in. Lavia, ward prowse would be good signings for Liverpool

Some Liverpool fans were laughing at Man Utd earlier in the season.

However Utd have had the last laugh by finishing in the top 4.

Brighton's Alexis Mac Allister is set to make a £55m move to Liverpool after the Seagulls gave permission for the midfielder to have a medical.

The Argentina playmaker played a key role as Brighton finished sixth in the Premier League last season to qualify for Europe for the first time.

The 24-year-old also helped his country win the World Cup in December.

Liverpool need to add to their midfield with James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain leaving this summer.

They were priced out of a move for Borussia Dortmund's England teenager Jude Bellingham, who is a target for Real Madrid.

Mac Allister played a prominent part as the Seagulls secured European football for the first time in their 122-year history.

He made 40 appearances and scored 12 goals, mostly in a number 10 role but also at times in deeper midfield positions.

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi last month said Mac Allister was a "great player" who deserved to "play at a higher level".

Mac Allister joined Brighton from Argentinos Juniors in January 2019 and immediately went back to the Buenos Aires club on loan.

He played his first match for the Seagulls in a goalless draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in March 2020 and has since made 112 appearances for the club, scoring 20 goals.

Mac Allister has been capped 16 times by Argentina and played in six games of their 2022 World Cup-winning campaign in Qatar, scoring in a 2-0 win against Poland in the group stages.

Liverpool have completed a £35m deal to sign midfielder Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton on a five-year contract.

The fee could rise to £55m for the Argentina playmaker, who helped Brighton finish sixth in the Premier League last term to qualify for Europe for the first time.

The 24-year-old scored 20 goals in 112 appearances for the Seagulls and helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup.

"It's a dream come true and I can't wait," said Mac Allister.

"I wanted to be in [from] the first day of pre-season, so it's good that everything is done. I'm looking forward to meeting my team-mates.

"It was a fantastic year for me - World Cup, what we achieved with Brighton - but now it's time to think about Liverpool and try to be a better player and a better human being every day."

Mac Allister for £35m is absolutely incredible business. Can't believe there wasn't more competition for him.

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita will join German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen when his contract expires with the Anfield club this summer.

The 28-year-old, who scored 11 goals in 129 appearances for the Reds, signed for what was a club record £48m from RB Leipzig in 2018.

The Guinea midfielder made just eight league appearances this season having struggled with injuries.

Liverpool had confirmed his departure in May.

Keita lifted the the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup, FA Cup and EFL Cup in his five-year spell in England.

"A number of clubs are obviously going to be interested when a player like Keita is available on a free transfer," said Clemens Fritz, head of scouting and professional football at Werder Bremen.

"He suffered an injury setback at the start of this season and that meant he didn't play as often as he'd have liked to.

"We now want to get him back to his best."

Szoboszlai moves up Liverpool list

Dominik Szoboszlai has moved up Liverpool’s list for their midfield rebuild after the club met with his representatives.

The 22-year-old, also heavily tracked by Newcastle United, has a €70million (£60.1m) release clause in his RB Leipzig contract which is understood to expire on June 30.

Szoboszlai’s comfort in playing across the midfield, his impressive chance creation metrics, and ball-carrying ability fits the profile Liverpool are after.

The club have been exploring multiple options to enhance the technical quality, dynamism, and depth in their central area.

Nicolo Barella is also a target while background work ha
