Another boring and uninspiring performance from Ten Hag's United. Man City will destroy us next week.

Don't believe what Ten Hag is saying about turning point? Personally he looks at sea, cannot implement a dominant style of play with all that money spent.
His Ajax team used to play good football. But he has come to Man United and has completely abanoned his philosophy. That is a sign of weak manager.

His signings have mostly been disasters. I don't see him lasting the season.

Erik Ten Hag says Man Utd should not have conceded last-minute penalty but praises 'incredible' night

Erik Ten Hag said FC Copenhagen should not have had a penalty in Man Utd's 1-0 Champions League win but praised an "incredible" night for the club following Andre Onana's late save.

His side finally earned the first win of their Champions League campaign at the third time of asking through Harry Maguire's header, but could have been denied had Jordan Larsson netted a last-gasp spot-kick at Old Trafford.

The penalty was awarded for a high boot from Scott McTominay following a Copenhagen corner - but speaking after the game, Ten Hag thought United's path to victory should not have needed his goalkeeper's intervention.

"It is incredible, a great night, especially in the last dying seconds we concede a penalty, which should not happen," he told TNT Sport. "But then it was a brilliant save from Andre [Onana].

"Slowly we have found our form this season and Harry Maguire played a very good game again and Andre as well had a very brilliant save just after half-time, which was very important.

"We conceded such a soft penalty and I think we should have had a penalty on Rashford, I do not know why that is not a penalty.

"But we dealt with it and that is a step up from a few weeks ago when we got out of rhythm when we had some setbacks from refereeing decisions.

"But now we stayed calm after a poor first half and in the second half, we stepped up and all over, we created more chances than them.

"And finally, the win is justified, but it was a narrow escape in the end."

Man Utd's Andre Onana defends team-mate Alejandro Garnacho over social media post

Andre Onana has defended Manchester United team-mate Alejandro Garnacho over a controversial social media post.

Garnacho posted a celebratory picture including Onana and other team-mates following the goalkeeper's late penalty save in their 1-0 win over FC Copenhagen on Tuesday night.

The post, which has been deleted, included emojis which could be deemed offensive.

The FA is aware of the social media post and has sought Garnacho's observations on it through Manchester United.

Taking to Instagram to defend the midfielder on Thursday, Onana wrote: "People cannot choose what I should be offended by. I know exactly what [Garnacho] meant: Power and strength.

"This matter should go no further."

Manchester United referred Sky Sports News to Onana's post when asked for comment.

In 2020, former Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani was banned for three matches and fined £100,000 when he posted a comment to thank a fan which included a racially offensive term.

A year earlier, Manchester City's Bernardo Silva was fined £50,000 and received a one-match ban after a tweet compared the facial features of a mascot for a Spanish confectionery firm to that of Benjamin Mendy. Silva had received support from Mendy during the FA's process.

Manchester United v Manchester City: Erik ten Hag says Red Devils are 'on track' before derby

Erik ten Hag believes Manchester United are going "in the right direction" - but Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola considers Liverpool his side's current biggest rivals.

United kick-off Sunday's derby six points behind City after losing four of their opening nine matches.

"I see positives, I see also negatives," said Ten Hag, adding his side still "have a way to go".

Guardiola suggested it "will take time" for United to challenge for the title.

In becoming only the second ever English team to complete the Treble last season, matching United's famous achievement in 1998-99, City finished 14 points ahead of their rivals in the league and beat United 2-1 in the FA Cup final.

But, when it comes to the Manchester derby, things have been more even, with City edging the past 20 league encounters 10-7.

Before the 191st derby (15:30 GMT kick-off), the managers of both clubs spoke about progress, prestige and big rivalries.

Manchester United 0-3 Man City: Erik ten Hag's team 'obliterated' as pressure mounts on Man Utd boss

Man Utd were "obliterated" in the Manchester derby by Pep Guardiola's City, according to Gary Neville, but the Sky Sports pundit has insisted United should stick with the increasingly-beleaguered Erik Ten Hag.

Erling Haaland's penalty separated the sides at half-time before City turned on the style to seal an emphatic 3-0 win.

"It was a footballing lesson. Manchester United didn't know what to do," concluded Micah Richards.

Even the scoreline, one-sided though it was, flattered United; City's end-of-game XG stood at 3.94.

"The first half was a contest," observed Neville. "The second half wasn't a contest. It became a shambles. United went missing in the second half."

Rasmus Hojlund's second-half substitution was widely booed by the Old Trafford crowd as Erik ten Hag's selections, which included replacing Sofyan Amrabat with Mason Mount at half-time, came under a harsh spotlight.

"It wasn't a great day for his substitutions," reflected Neville. "They were incredible last season but they made the team worse today.

"He went too early. He opened up his midfield and got exposed.

"But my anger isn't with Ten Hag. I don't think he is the fundamental problem. The toxicity at this club is eating alive every manager and every player that comes here."

However, United's lack of recognisable playing style under Ten Hag drew further condemnation from Jamie Carragher.

"He has been here 18 months and none of us here can explain what Manchester United try to do with how they play. They play underdog football. They play counter-attack and long balls - no other top team plays that way.

"It's really shocking when you see them try to play out from the back."

Man Utd 0-3 Newcastle: Holders dumped out of Carabao Cup as pressure builds on Erik ten Hag

Holders Man Utd were dumped out of the Carabao Cup at the fourth round after a humbling 3-0 defeat to a weakened Newcastle side at Old Trafford to pile the pressure on Erik ten Hag.

In a repeat of last season's final, out-of-form Man Utd were given hope this could be a chance to redeem themselves after Sunday's dismal Manchester derby defeat with Eddie Howe naming a Newcastle team that included five full-backs and no recognised striker.

However, Miguel Almiron - an early replacement for the injured Matt Targett - struck on 28 minutes as Man Utd's confidence wobbled with Hannibal Mejbri lucky not to see red. Before the hosts could recover, Lewis Hall volleyed in his first Newcastle goal to double their lead ahead of the break.

Man Utd came back into the game after the half-time introductions of Sofyan Amrabat and Aaron Wan-Bissaka only to be punished on the hour as Joe Willock delivered a hammer blow. Ten Hag's side were deflated after the third and became petulant as fans left the stadium in their droves.

Newcastle will play Chelsea in the quarter finals after claiming revenge with a rare win at Old Trafford, where Man Utd have lost five of their last eight games. Back-to-back 3-0 defeats at home mark one of Ten Hag's worst week of results at the club.

Manchester United ownership needs resolution for clarity on Erik ten Hag future - sources

Manchester United's ownership situation needs a quicker resolution to bring greater clarity to Erik ten Hag's position, numerous sources connected to the club have told BBC Sport.

The Dutchman is under pressure following successive 3-0 home defeats by Manchester City and Newcastle.

Ten Hag says he is "a fighter" and admitted United are "in a bad place", while club officials have attempted to play down speculation about his future.

United face a run of "must-win" games.

Saturday's trip to Fulham, opponents United have not lost to since 2009, is followed by a Champions League trip to Denmark to face FC Copenhagen.

After starting their group campaign with successive defeats, United probably need a total of at least four points from that game and the 29 November encounter with Galatasaray in Istanbul to feel confident about advancing to the knockout stage.

After that comes the visit of Luton Town to Old Trafford. The Hatters have only avoided defeat in an away game against United once in their history, in 1897.

Poor results in those games would bring United under intense pressure to make a managerial change, but that process may not be straightforward.

It is nearly a year since the Glazer family said they were considering selling the club as they "explore strategic alternatives".

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos Group is aiming to secure a 25% stake in United but the deal is still to be completed.

Ratcliffe wants to assume control of the football operations side of United and would have a major say on any potential decision to replace Ten Hag.

But strict rules around the entire bid process would make it difficult for the Glazer family to consult Ratcliffe until a deal is finalised.

It is felt by many observers that United would benefit from the ownership situation being clarified, with most also feeling a fresh look at how Old Trafford operates by Ratcliffe would be a positive.

Man Utd ownership: F1's Toto Wolff would consider joining Sir Jim Ratcliffe bid

Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff says he has spoken to Sir Jim Ratcliffe about joining his bid to buy a shareholding in Manchester United.

Ratcliffe has made an offer to buy 25% of the club from the Glazer family.

The founder of petrochemicals giant Ineos owns a third of Mercedes F1, with Wolff and Mercedes owning equal shares.

"Jim has shared the trajectory with me. I very much respect his values and we trust each other," Wolff told the Press Association.

However, he added in an interview with Sky Sports at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix that any investment was "very far away".

Ratcliffe's Ineos Group is aiming to secure a 25% stake in United but the deal is still to be completed. He wants to assume control of the football operations side of United.

Wolff made his fortune by investing in internet and technology companies before moving into motorsport, first with Germany's HWA, which has links with Mercedes, and the Williams F1 team before taking over at Mercedes F1 in 2013.

The 51-year-old Austrian added: "I have never aimed for trophy investments but I like the competitiveness of the Premier League.

"Jim and Manchester United is a love story because he is born there. Our personal relationship is strong and with Ola Kallenius (Mercedes-Benz chief executive), they call us the Three Amigos because we live in the no-nonsense world.

"If we felt I could contribute then I would consider joining him at Manchester United."

Man Utd: Marcus Rashford birthday party 'unacceptable' to Erik ten Hag after derby defeat

Marcus Rashford's birthday celebrations hours after Manchester United's 3-0 defeat by Manchester City were "unacceptable" and the forward has apologised, says manager Erik ten Hag.

The party last Sunday night was pre-planned, and attending the gathering did not prevent Rashford from arriving on time for training on Monday.

"I am aware of it and I spoke with him about it," said Ten Hag.

"It is unacceptable. I told him. He apologised and that is it."

Ten Hag was clearly unhappy at the optics of Rashford being seen out in one of Manchester's most exclusive nightspots when he had just been part of an abject Premier League display in which United ended up being comprehensively outclassed.

The manager refused to say whether the England international, who turned 26 on 31 October, had been fined, saying it was an internal matter.

However, he confirmed Rashford had not been omitted from the starting line-up for Wednesday's EFL Cup fourth-round defeat by Newcastle as a disciplinary measure.

It is not the first time Rashford has been rebuked by Ten Hag.

On New Year's Eve last year, he was put on the substitutes' bench for United's Premier League game at Wolves after being late for a team meeting. The striker subsequently scored the winner after his introduction from the bench.

Erik ten Hag insists Man Utd players support his position as manager after late Premier League win over Fulham

Erik ten Hag insisted he did not need proof his Manchester United players still support him after they secured a vital 1-0 win at Fulham on Saturday.

Man Utd were heading for a third successive game without a win or a goal at Craven Cottage until Bruno Fernandes scored a stoppage-time winner in front of the away fans.

The result saw Ten Hag's side bounce back from successive 3-0 home defeats against Manchester City and Newcastle and asked whether the jubilant scenes after Fernandes' winner showed the dressing room still backs him, Ten Hag said: "I knew that and we've seen it again.

"It's a good dressing room and they fight for each other. They know what the standards are. At Manchester United, they have to win every game. That is the attitude you need when you play for this club."

However, Man Utd are still outside the Champions League qualification places and now face a crucial European game against Copenhagen on Wednesday before Luton visit Old Trafford on Saturday.

Ten Hag is under no illusions his side still have a long way to go, highlighting a lack of attacking output that saw Rasmus Hojlund receive just one pass in the Fulham box.

"It was a solid performance," said the Man Utd manager. "I am pleased, especially with the spirit in the team.

"I was pleased with the way we pressed. Fulham play very decent football from the back but we never allowed them to play from the back.

"It's clear we have to create more in the box but the composure on the ball was a step up."

Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez: Man Utd duo not expected to return from injury before Christmas, says Erik ten Hag

Injured duo Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez are not expected to return to action for Manchester United before Christmas, Erik ten Hag has confirmed.

Casemiro sustained a hamstring injury in the 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat by Newcastle last week while Martinez is recovering from surgery on a recurring foot problem. The news means they could miss up to 10 games in all competitions.

The Brazil and Argentina internationals were already on United's long-term injury list along with Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw and Amad Diallo - while Jadon Sancho remains unavailable due to disciplinary reasons.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday's Champions League trip to FC Copenhagen, Ten Hag said of his injured players: "I have some time schedules, but it's always difficult to expect that because they can have setbacks during rehab periods.

"Casemiro and Martinez are really strong injuries, I don't expect them back before Christmas."

4 3 loss tonight to Copenhagen.

Surely the manager's days are numbered.

BREAKING NEWS:

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's acquisition of a minority stake in #MUFC is expected to be ratified during the international break.

BREAKING NEWS:

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's acquisition of a minority stake in #MUFC is expected to be ratified during the international break.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's deal to become a minority shareholder in Manchester United is expected to be agreed during this month's international break, possibly as early as next week.

It is expected Ratcliffe's Ineos Group will pay around £1.25bn to buy 25%.

United's owners the Glazer family announced on 22 November 2022 they were considering selling the club.

Ineos and Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani both made offers, tabling bids of around £5bn.

However, neither bidder was willing to reach the Glazer family's valuation, with co-chairs Joel and Avram Glazer both known to be reluctant sellers.

Sheikh Jassim withdrew from the process last month, claiming his final bid, thought to be double United's $3.2bn (£2.64bn) stock market valuation, had not met the Glazers' demands.

Ratcliffe had already amended his initial plan to buy the Glazers' 69% shareholding and reduced it to a 'majority' stake.

However, it was only when he reduced it again, to an anticipated 25%, that the potential for an agreement increased.

It is not entirely clear what the structure of the deal will be, nor if there will be specific dates that would allow Ratcliffe to increase his shareholding. It is thought around £245m in additional funds will be made available by Ratcliffe for infrastructure works related to the stadium.

Luke Shaw: Manchester United defender returns to training after recovering from muscle injury

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has returned to training after three months out with a muscle injury.

The England international, 28, has made just two appearances this season after sustaining the injury in late August.

Fellow left-back Tyrell Malacia has also been suffering from a knee problem and has yet to feature this campaign.

Sergio Reguilon, the loan signing from Spurs, has provided cover, with Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof and Sofyan Amrabat also filling in at left-back.

Manager Erik ten Hag has had to deal with a number of injuries this season, with goalkeeper Andre Onana the latest to pick up a knock playing for Cameroon during the international break.

Onana is being assessed as the Red Devils prepare for a Premier League trip to Everton on Sunday and a Champions League visit to Galatasaray three days later.

Lisandro Martinez (foot), Casemiro (thigh) and Christian Eriksen (knee) are all definitely out while Jonny Evans (thigh), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (illness) and Rasmus Hojlund (thigh) are doubtful.

Manchester United are also looking to reinforce at centre-back, with Nice's France defender Jean-Clair Todibo, 23, and Sporting Lisbon's Portugal defender Goncalo Inacio, 22, seen as ideal replacements for ex-France international Raphael Varane, 30

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to be fit for their Premier League match against Everton.

Onana, 27, was injured late on in Cameroon's 3-0 victory over Mauritius in a World Cup qualifier last week but has trained before Sunday's meeting.

United boss Erik ten Hag also said defender Luke Shaw will be available but there are doubts over striker Rasmus Hojlund's fitness.

"Andre is OK. He stepped in during training, so he is good," Ten Hag said.

"Rasmus is a close finish, he is training, he is down and outside. He is making very good steps and we will have to wait to make a final decision."

Marcus Rashford will miss Manchester United's Champions League game at Galatasaray next week after UEFA confirmed a one-match ban on Friday.

Rashford was sent off for "rough play" following a challenge on Elias Jelert in United's 4-3 loss against Copenhagen earlier this month. United manager Erik ten Hag described it as "harsh," but UEFA confirmed the decision by referee Donatas Rumsas after a VAR review had been upheld.

"I think when you freeze it, it always looks worse. I'm very disappointed about such decisions. I think the game is never meant to be like this," Ten Hag said at the time. "It has nothing to do with football."

Defeat to Copenhagen put United's hopes of advancing to the Champions League knockout stage in the balance.

That goal by Garnacho was one of the best I have ever seen in the Premier League. Amazing goal.

Manchester United's Champions League hopes suffered another setback as a horror show from goalkeeper Andre Onana allowed Galatasaray to earn a draw in a classic match in Istanbul.

Erik ten Hag's side did so much right and twice held a two-goal lead but errors from Onana threw Galatasaray lifelines to leave United bottom of Group A with their hopes of reaching the knockout phase in the balance before their final game at home to Bayern Munich.

After Bayern Munich's draw with Copenhagen later in the evening, Manchester United will be knocked out of the competition if they fail to beat the German champions and there is a winner between Galatasaray and Copenhagen in a fortnight.

United, as they did in their last Champions League game in Copenhagen, were in a commanding position early on after superb strikes from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes inside the first 18 minutes.

Onana's poor attempt to stop Hakim Ziyech's free-kick got Galatasaray back in the game before half-time but United looked to have gained control again in what was a hostile atmosphere when Scott McTominay turned in Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross 10 minutes after the break to make it 3-1.

However Ziyech was gifted a second goal from another free-kick after an even more stark blunder from Onana, who made a hapless attempt to keep the ball out, before Galatasaray substitute Kerem Akturkoglu's explosive finish brought them level with 19 minutes left.

In a dramatic end-to-end finale, Wilfried Zaha missed a glorious chance for Galatasaray and Fernandes struck the upright as United's Champions League destiny was taken out of their own hands.

United saw history repeat itself - and not in a good way - as they were left to regret squandering yet another strong Champions League position to leave their hopes of reaching the last 16 in serious jeopardy.

They ended up losing 4-3 in Denmark after scoring two early goals to assume control against Copenhagen. This time the finger of blame is directed at goalkeeper Onana, who understandably looked disconsolate as the final whistle sounded on a stormy night on the pitch and overhead in Istanbul.

United were looking composed with those early goals from Garnacho - with another spectacular finish to add to his moment of genius at Everton - and Fernandes, before Onana got his positioning hopelessly wrong to allow Ziyech's routine free-kick to slide in after 29 minutes.

So much of United's work on the night was good though, and they responded well when McTominay slid in their third.

Only Onana will know what he was doing with his attempt to keep out another Ziyech free-kick just after the hour mark, the keeper merely helping his straightforward delivery into the net, to give Galatasaray the impetus for Akturkoglu's blistering equaliser.

In a chaotic and highly entertaining conclusion, both sides streamed forward in search of the winner that could have proved vital and it was incredible there was not another goal given the number of opportunities.

Instead, United were again left to regret their failure to see out a game they were in command of, with another poor display from the goalkeeper they signed from Inter Milan principally at fault.

Man U have been pathetic in the Champions League, whilst it wasn't an easy group it could have been far tougher

The solitary win they got was a touch fortunate too as it needed an Onana save to secure all 3 points

Now they need to beat Bayern and then hope it's a draw in the other game, what does help them is that Bayern will probably play a weakened team

Champions League: Erik ten Hag says Man Utd throwing away leads is 'my responsibility'

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says he is responsible for his side's tendency to throw away leads in the Champions League.

United had a two-goal lead over Galatasaray twice in Istanbul but came away with a 3-3 draw on Wednesday.

It means progression to the last 16 of the competition is out of their hands, with United sitting bottom of Group A before the evening's late kick-offs.

Asked who was to blame, Ten Hag told TNT Sports: "It's always me."

United have squandered a lead in five Champions League group games this season and have led two of their games by two goals at some point.

"I am responsible for this," added Ten Hag. "We know we are in a project. We are making improvements, so that's very hopeful.

"We are going in the right direction so I know we will be successful in the long-term, but if you want to stay in the Champions League you need to win these games.

"We were winning and then we're losing it. We should have taken three points, that's clear. We did this in other games. I was pleased with how we played but at the same time I have to criticise the team because the defending is not good enough.

"We are leading 3-1 and we cannot afford mistakes as it makes a difference."

Errors from United goalkeeper Andre Onana threw Galatasaray lifelines to leave United bottom of the group before their final game at home to Bayern Munich.

If FC Copenhagen beat Bayern Munich in their match on Wednesday evening, Manchester United are out of the competition. If that match ends in a draw, United would need to beat Bayern and hope for a draw between Copenhagen and Galatasaray next month.

"We have to understand in these types of games and stages we have to be smart enough and manage the game better," United captain Bruno Fernandes told TNT Sports.

"Everyone has to step up and take responsibility of their own mistakes. Now we don't depend on ourselves but it is what it is.

"We were on top of the game twice and we had far too many chances to have the game closed. We were not clinical enough.

"What we have been doing in the Champions League is not enough. It is not the first game we've had like this. We have to secure the result."

Onana is a joke of a keeper. He is yet another poor signing from Ten Hag. This guy has made one poor signing after another. I have never seen a manager with such a poor talent ID.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says goalkeeper Andre Onana is the Premier League's second-best goalkeeper "based on stats".

Onana, 27, was at fault for two Galatasaray goals in Wednesday's 3-3 Champions League draw which left qualification hopes in the balance.

However, the Cameroonian is tied for most clean sheets in the Premier League this season with five.

And Onana has also prevented 3.67 goals - the second most in the league.

Only Luton Town's Thomas Kaminski is ahead of him on 6.3 goals prevented.

Those numbers come from Opta calculations, with actual goals conceded being subtracted from the expected goals on target (xGOT) conceded figures, which reflect quality of chances for the opponent and shot execution.

Defending his keeper, Ten Hag said: "If you analyse it well then you see he is the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on stats, so his expected defending goals is the second best in the Premier League."

Manchester United banned journalists from four media outlets from Tuesday's news conference with boss Erik ten Hag.

United claimed they had not been given right of reply to negative stories around the club.

Antony: Man Utd winger criticises club's ex-players for not asking if he is OK

Manchester United winger Antony has criticised former players of the club for not offering constructive comments or asking if he is OK.

United paid an initial £82m to Ajax for Antony in September 2022 but he has failed to find top form since then.

The Brazilian is also the subject of a police investigation into a series of allegations of domestic abuse.

Former United captain Gary Neville has criticised Antony during Sky Sports broadcasts.

Neville called the 23-year-old "embarrassing" for petulantly lashing out at Manchester City's Jeremy Doku in the latter stages of October's Manchester derby defeat at Old Trafford.

In a written interview with YouTube channel The United Stand, Antony said he feels the criticism he has received from the club's former players is unfair.

"Today, I see criticism coming from former club players and other people in the media, who unreasonably express their opinions and influence thousands of fans, sometimes even when I do not play," he said.

"But I've never seen them give constructive criticism, which will help me be a better professional.

"None of them have ever sent me a message to see how I am feeling, especially during this period of turbulence that I am going through.

"The 'digital court' is ruining lives; contexts are left aside, and the truth no longer matters."

Though Antony referred to "a period of turbulence" in his life, the domestic abuse allegations he faces were not directly discussed in the interview.

Brazil banished him from their squad earlier this year in response to the allegations, while he was suspended by United before later returning to first-team training.

Antony came on for Marcus Rashford 29 minutes from the end of last Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United.

The former Ajax man, who played under Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag for Ajax, is yet to score or assist a goal this season.

"I am silently rebuilding myself, and I know that I will be able to be in my best physical and mental shape and overcome all these barriers and challenges that are in front of me, because it has always been like this in my life," said Antony.

"No-one has ever given me anything, I have always fought hard for everything I achieved. I would like to know how these people who make these unfair and malicious criticisms fared in my place."

United and manager Ten Hag are under significant pressure having lost 10 out of 21 games in all competitions this season.

They have slipped to seventh in the Premier League and are in danger of missing out on qualification for the knockout rounds of the Champions League, needing to beat Bayern Munich at Old Trafford in their final group stage match while hoping Copenhagen and Galatasaray draw.

"The season is not as good as we wanted - we are unstable," added Antony.

"But we lost a lot of injured players, fundamental pieces for Erik ten Hag's chess. With the return of part of the squad, we will improve, and results will improve."

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag and defender Harry Maguire have won November's Premier League manager and player of the month awards.
United lost four of their first seven league matches this season but have since climbed to sixth in the table.
They won November's three league matches - against Fulham, Luton and Everton - without conceding.

Maguire, who struggled for game time at the start of the season, played every minute in the three victories.

The 30-year-old becomes the first United defender to win the award since Nemanja Vidic in January 2009.

"Couldn't have done it without my team-mates, the staff and you fans. Your love and support doesn't go unnoticed, I appreciate it," Maguire said on X after winning the award.

Maguire was stripped of the United captaincy by Ten Hag in July and looked set for a move away from Old Trafford before the start of the season.

However, he turned down an offer from West Ham to stay at United, even though the club accepted a £30m bid for the England centre-back.

He topped a six-player shortlist that also included Manchester City's Jeremy Doku, Newcastle's Anthony Gordon, Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski, Raheem Sterling of Chelsea and Bournemouth winger Marcus Tavernier.

United ended October eighth in the Premier League after a 3-0 derby defeat by Manchester City, but Ten Hag, who claims a third Premier League manager of the month award, has guided his side to sixth - nine points behind leaders Arsenal.

Man Utd put Casemiro, Varane & Sancho up for sale

Manchester United are willing to listen to offers on a series of high-profile players, as Erik ten Hag seeks to hone his squad and ensure it is fully committed to his approach. Casemiro, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho are available for transfer, although the club will be flexible on other squad members.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's 25 per cent stake in Manchester United is now not expected to be announced until the week after next.

Jadon Sancho: Man Utd winger's return to first team 'up to him' says boss Erik ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said the onus is on Jadon Sancho to do what is required to facilitate his return to the club's first-team squad.

Sancho, 23, has been training away from the first team after claims he was made a "scapegoat" following his omission for September's defeat at Arsenal.

Ten Hag said at the time he had been excluded because his training performances were below standard.

"He knows what he has to do, it is up to him," Ten Hag said.

Ten Hag said Sancho, who joined United from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund for £73m in July 2021, must buy into the ethos he has created at the club.

The Dutchman has been determined to improve discipline at United since his arrival in Old Trafford 18 months ago.

When asked at news conference if Sancho's time was up amid talk of a move away in January, Ten Hag said: "What will happen there, he knows what he has to do, if he wants to return it is up to him.

"It is about a culture and every player has to match certain standards and it was about that."

United said in a statement in September that Sancho would be on a "personal training programme away from the first team".

The statement added that the decision was made "pending resolution of a squad discipline issue".

Last season, Sancho spent three months battling physical and mental issues, with Ten Hag at one point saying the England international was not fit enough to play.

Sancho has scored 24 goals in 92 appearances for United but has not featured since 3-2 home win over Nottingham Forest on 26 August.

Alejandro Garnacho: Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag says teenager delivering after initial attitude issues

Erik ten Hag says Alejandro Garnacho is delivering for Manchester United after overcoming "some issues" with his attitude at the beginning of his Old Trafford career.

Garnacho has impressed for United in recent weeks despite their inconsistent results, starting eight consecutive matches in all competitions just 15 months after making his full senior debut.

His tally of three goals so far this season - including a stunning overhead kick at Everton in the Premier League - is just two shy of his total for the whole of the 2022/23 campaign. He also delivered a fine assist for Scott McTominay's winner against Chelsea on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old has become a regular in United's side barely 12 months after being criticised by both his manager and captain Bruno Fernandes for showing poor behaviour, with reports claiming he had twice been late for pre-season training last summer.

"There were some issues (with his attitude), but young players have to learn what is needed for the lifestyle of a professional footballer," United boss Ten Hag said ahead of Saturday's Premier League home game against Bournemouth.

"Our assessment at the start of the season was that we wanted to bring him in and wanted to give him the time to deliver what he's doing at the moment.

"There's big potential and a lot he can build on, but we are happy with his performances and his contribution. The base, the foundation is always the defending part, but now also attacking-wise he has the key actions - the assists, the goal threat, he scores goals, so that's of course very important for an offensive player."

Man Utd: Erik ten Hag says squad 'not good enough' after defeat by Bournemouth

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said the humiliating 3-0 home Premier League defeat by Bournemouth left him "annoyed" and "disappointed" and admitted his side were "not good enough to be consistent" as their season lurched into another bout of soul-searching.

The latest setback is as bad as any experienced during Ten Hag's tenure, with skipper Bruno Fernandes calling the performance "not acceptable".

Ten Hag, meanwhile, described United's start as "no good" and "poor".

Once they had fallen behind to Dominic Solanke's fifth-minute effort, they never seriously threatened an equaliser.

Coming seven days after the performance at Newcastle that was roundly condemned, it raised serious questions over the assurances Ten Hag delivered around the midweek win over Chelsea that United were moving forward.

Asked if his current squad could achieve the consistency required of an elite team, Ten Hag admitted the answer was negative.

"As a squad, we are not good enough to be consistent," he said.

"I'm annoyed, disappointed, definitely. I expected something different. The way we started was no good. It was poor."

'Inconsistent' Man Utd can beat anyone - Ten Hag

Manager Erik ten Hag says Manchester United can "beat any opponent" as they aim to clinch a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Tuesday's visit of Bayern Munich is United's final group game after winning just one of their previous five.

United must win to progress - and hope Copenhagen draw at home to Galatasaray.

"We are not consistent but we have good performances," said Ten Hag. "If we are in the right spirit, we are able to beat any opponent."

A draw against group leaders Bayern would see United finish third and enter the Europa League group stage, if there is not a winner between Copenhagen and Galatasaray.

Defender Victor Lindelof remains an injury doubt for the Red Devils, who suffered a 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at home in the Premier League on Saturday.

But Bayern also suffered a surprise defeat at the weekend as the German champions were thrashed 5-1 by Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.

Erik Ten Hag insists Man Utd were 'very good' in Bayern Munich defeat and claims no regret over Champions League campaign

Man Utd boss Erik Ten Hag insisted his side were "very good" and that he had no regrets over their Champions League campaign despite exiting the tournament with a whimper against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Needing a win to have any chance of progressing to the last 16, United managed only one shot on target all night, and that came from Luke Shaw's hopeful long-range effort midway through the first half.

Instead, Bayern - who were playing only for pride after previously sealing top spot in Group A - emerged victorious through Kingsley Coman's 70th-minute winner. They enjoyed 10 shots, double that of their hosts, 17 opposition-box touches to United's 10, and saw almost 60 per cent of the ball across the 90 minutes.

In the end, Man Utd's Champions League hopes would have been dashed anyway owing to FC Copenhagen's win over Galatasaray, but defeat left them rock bottom of their group after just one win from their six games, behind teams ranked 42nd and 54th in UEFA's club coefficient list.

Ten Hag admitted United's Champions League campaign was "not good enough" but batted away suggestions he may have regrets over the ignominious way it had unfolded. He instead praised his players' performance and talked up the quality of their opponents - despite their own 5-1 defeat at Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

He told TNT Sports: "The team did very good, we were very good defensively and in the pressing. We had many ball regains, especially second half. But then we didn't take enough benefit from it - we were playing against a strong side.

"Bayern always, even when they are not in the game, have enough individual class to produce one moment - and that's what happened.

"We know we want to be more consistent. Me as a manager, I have to improve the team, help the team progress, guide them, and the players have to take responsibility. We have to do that together.

"The players gave everything, we saw the spirit. I have to pay a big compliment for the way they worked together as a team against a good Bayern side.

"You need energy when the game is going, and especially in forward positions the options [on the bench] were limited.

"I don't look with regret [at the campaign]. We want to be in the Champions League, the target was always to qualify for the knock-outs, but we have to learn from it, and accept we played some good football.

"Rasmus Hojlund scored five times, we had some very good performances, and we have to take that into the Premier League.

"We want to be back in the Champions League again and so we have to qualify again."

Stumbling Man Utd haunted in trepidation ahead of Anfield trip

Peter Schmeichel admitted this week that he would rather not think about Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Liverpool on Sunday and many fans will share the fears of the club’s treble-winning goalkeeper.

United could hardly be heading to Anfield at a lower ebb after a humiliating 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth and then a meek 1-0 loss at home to Bayern Munich that condemned Erik Ten Hag’s side to a European exit.

A chronic lack of goals and creativity are two of the root causes for United’s current plight, while a lengthening injury list that now includes defenders Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw is causing Ten Hag further headaches.

No wonder the spectre of last season’s 7-0 hammering at Anfield is lurking and why some United fans might make the short trip with a deep sense of trepidation.

United lost 4-0 at Anfield the previous season and has scored just one goal in its last seven visits, with the last victory away to its inter-city rivals in 2016. It also has the memory of a 5-0 home drubbing two years ago.

While United has lost half of its 24 games in all competitions this season, Liverpool has moved to the top of the table, even if it has not been completely convincing.

Graham Potter to be high on Manchester United shortlist if Sir Jim Ratcliffe chooses to sack Erik ten Hag

Graham Potter is expected to be high on Manchester United's shortlist of managerial candidates once INEOS are running football operations - if they decide to part company with Erik ten Hag.

However, it is clear the current hierarchy at Old Trafford has no plans to change manager and there has been no approach - even loosely - to any potential successor.

The story was first reported by The Sun and Sky Sports News understands Potter will be considered for the top job at United by the incoming INEOS executives if results do not improve.

United were knocked out of Europe on Tuesday night, three days after a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth that leaves them sixth in the Premier League.

It is thought United's injury crisis is seen as at least some mitigation for the recent poor results and there is still broad alignment with the Dutchman's long-term vision.

However, United go to Anfield on Sunday - where they lost 7-0 last season - live on Sky Sports. A similarly heavy defeat would heap yet more pressure on Ten Hag.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's investment in United is expected to be concluded in the coming days, though it will take up to two months for the deal to be formally ratified by the Premier League.

It looks very likely that only a win at Anfield this Sunday will save ten Hag's job for the next few weeks.

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek is set to join Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt on loan for the rest of the season when the January transfer window opens.

Van de Beek has made just six Premier League starts since joining United from Ajax for £35m in September 2020.

Manager Erik ten Hag said recently the Netherlands international needed a move to revive his career.

It is understood Eintracht will pay a loan fee for the 26-year-old.

Before United played Newcastle earlier this month, Ten Hag said: "I can see he has to play for his career and for everything."

Van de Beek has made 62 appearances for United across all competitions, scoring twice.

FT: Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

Manchester United captain Scott McTominay, speaking to Sky Sports: "For a start we have a number of injuries which doesn't help the squad or help the rhythm of playing a regular team, but we knew it would be tough today.

"We had to stay calm and stick together and we had moments in the game where we had chances and could have hurt them.

"We're disappointed we couldn't make it more of a game and create more opportunities. The boys will be pleased not to lose but also definitely not happy we didn't win."

Man Utd will implement a more ruthless approach to player contracts; club want to prioritise the right culture and recruitment strategy over business interests; United will be more willing to terminate contracts; discussions have taken place over the Jadon Sancho's situation.

Manchester United will implement a more ruthless approach to their process over player contracts in a bid to prioritise the right culture and recruitment strategy over business interests.

Sky Sports News understands this will form part of the directive to strengthen football operations when INEOS' 25 per cent stake in the club is ratified.

United will be more willing to terminate contracts if it's for the greater good, and discussions to this effect have taken place over the Jadon Sancho situation.

If an exit route does not materialise for the 23-year-old, United will consider severing ties instead of trying to recoup some of their £73m outlay.

As revealed by Sky Sports News in October, clubs in Serie A, Bundesliga and the Turkish Super Lig have done due diligence on Sancho, with his wage packet being an obstacle.

United want to be more "culture-focused" in their decision-making and have noted Arsenal as an example where cutting ties with players instead of trying to hold out for a fee can help reshape a squad and create an environment of excellence.

The north London club have terminated a series of contracts under Mikel Arteta, with Mesut Ozil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe being high-profile examples. The decisive action and how it has helped the manager drive positive change and enhance standards at Arsenal is greatly admired by INEOS.

NewCastle Chief Ashworth likely to join Manchester United

It seems increasingly likely Dan Ashworth will replace John Murtough as Manchester United's football director once Sir Jim Ratcliffe moves into Old Trafford.

The Premier League are to urge fans to behave themselves ahead of the festive fixtures. Following a spate of incidents at recent matches.

Emma Raducanu is likely to turn to Nick Cavaday, a name from her younger days, to assist her when she comes back in the New Year after nearly eight months away from the game.

Raphael Varane's future at Manchester United should become clearer in the next couple of weeks after he and manager Erik ten Hag appeared to have set aside their differences. Alexis Mac Allister is set to be out of action until January.

More details

British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe has agreed to buy a 25% stake in Manchester United for about $1.3bn (£1.03bn).

Ratcliffe's Ineos Group will take control of football operations.

The 71-year-old will also provide $300m (£236m) for future investment into the club's Old Trafford stadium.

The announcement comes 13 months after the club's owners, the Glazer family, stated they were considering selling to "explore strategic alternatives".

The American family bought the club for £790m in 2005.

The only other publicly declared bidder, Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, withdrew his offer to buy 100% of the club in October.

United have struggled on the pitch this season and have not won the Premier League since 2013, while there have been regular protests against the Glazer ownership.

Manchester-born Ratcliffe is chairman of petrochemicals company Ineos and says he is a "lifelong supporter of the club". He tried and failed to buy Chelsea last year..

In a statement, he said: "Whilst the commercial success of the club has ensured there have always been available funds to win trophies at the highest level, this potential has not been fully unlocked in recent times.

"We will bring the global knowledge, expertise and talent from the wider Ineos Sport group to help drive further improvement at the club, while also providing funds intended to enable future investment into Old Trafford.

"We are here for the long term and recognise that a lot of challenges and hard work lie ahead, which we will approach with rigour, professionalism and passion. We are committed to working with everyone at the club - the board, staff, players and fans - to help drive the club forward.

"Our shared ambition is clear: we all want to see Manchester United back where we belong, at the very top of English, European and world football."

The club say the deal is "subject to customary regulatory approvals" but are "hopeful it will be completed as soon as possible".

How will the deal work?

Ratcliffe has agreed to buy 25% of the club's class B shares, largely held by the Glazer family, who own 69% of the club, and contain almost all the voting rights, and up to 25% of its class A shares, which are listed on the New York Stock Market. The shares are worth $33 per share.

It means the Glazer family will retain a majority stake in the club.

Taking on sporting control at the club means Ineos will oversee the men's and women's football operations and academies.

They will also get two seats on the Manchester United PLC and Manchester United Football Club boards.

Subject to necessary approvals, Ratcliffe will delegate his seats on the PLC board to John Reece, a shareholder of Ineos, and Rob Nevin, chairman of Ineos Sport.

On the UK club board he will delegate his seats to former British Cycling chief Sir Dave Brailsford and former Juventus and Paris St-Germain executive Jean-Claude Blanc.

United's executive co-chairmen and directors, Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer, said: "Sir Jim and Ineos bring a wealth of commercial experience as well as significant financial commitment into the club.

"Through Ineos Sport, Manchester United will have access to seasoned high-performance professionals, experienced in creating and leading elite teams from both inside and outside the game.

"Manchester United has talented people right across the club and our desire is to always improve at every level to help bring our great fans more success in the future."

Ineos already owns French Ligue 1 club Nice and Swiss club Lausanne.

Its sporting portfolio also includes high-profile sailing team Ineos Britannia - led by Sir Ben Ainslie - which is aiming to win the 2024 America's Cup for Great Britain.

Ineos also has a five-year partnership with Formula 1 team Mercedes, owning a third of the team - and took over the British-based Team Sky in cycling in 2019.

'Trawlers Limited' - the company owned by Ratcliffe which is making the acquisition - was inspired by the famous quote by former United striker Eric Cantona.

BBC

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is expected to ask an external auditor to assess Manchester United’s structure and expenditure with a view to executing a major streamlining exercise, meaning as many as 300 jobs are potentially under threat.

Executives from Ineos have been in discussions with United over the past weeks regarding Ratcliffe’s plans ahead of his 25% purchase of the club becoming official on Christmas Eve, with the club’s management already having been reminded to curb rising costs to ensure maximum funds for transfers within the strictures of financial fair play.

The 71-year-old believes staff numbers, which are a minimum of 1000, could be reduced by between 25-30% and so will instruct a blue chip accountant to audit the club. This may be one of the so-called big four of KPMG, Deloitte, Ernst & Young or PwC. In 2019 Ineos changed from PwC, its longstanding auditor, to Deloitte but whether the latter company will work on United is unclear.

Manchester United: Sir Jim Ratcliffe says it will take time and patience to bring success

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has said it will take "time and patience" to "bring sporting success" back to Manchester United.

The British billionaire has agreed to buy a 25% stake in the Old Trafford club for about $1.3bn (£1.03bn).

His Ineos Group will take control of football operations and Ratcliffe will also provide $300m (£236m) for future investment into United's stadium.

Ratcliffe has told supporters "we recognise our responsibility as custodians of the club on your behalf".

In an open letter to fans, he added: "I believe we can bring sporting success on the pitch to complement the undoubted commercial success that the club has enjoyed.

"It will require time and patience alongside rigour and the highest level of professional management.

"You are ambitious for Manchester United and so are we. There are no guarantees in sport, and change can inevitably take time but we are in it for the long term and together we want to help take Manchester United back to where the club belongs, at the very top of English, European and world football.

"I take that responsibility very seriously."

"We are looking forward to working with them. They want to work with us and we want to work with them. It's very beneficial to Manchester United."
