Pakistan lose three quick wickets before stumps after taking 280-run first innings lead

We all know the threat Yasir brings, but I am actually looking forward to seeing Bilal bowl tomorrow too.

Mark Waugh perplexed by Tim Paine’s decision not to take the new ball

AUSTRALIA has a mountain to climb to get back in the first Test against Pakistan at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

At stumps on day two, Australia was 0-30 after new-look opening duo Usman Khawaja (17 not out) and Aaron Finch (13 not out) survived 13 overs after almost two days in the field.

Australia trail Pakistan by 452 runs following centuries to recalled opener Mohammad Hafeez (126) and middle order batsman Haris Sohail (110) put the home side in a commanding position as they were bowled out for 482 off a 164.2 overs.

Veteran quick Peter Siddle was the pick of the bowlers with 3-58 off 29 overs, while Nathan Lyon toiled away and claimed 2-114 from 52 overs.

Pakistan remained firmly in control but South Africa-born debutant Labuschagne at least gave Australia a spark.

The part-time legspinner removed Asad Shafiq with a peach of a delivery minutes before tea, then had Babar Azam run out while fielding at mid-wicket in the final session.

Labuschagne didn’t necessarily believe the pitch was more conducive to leg spin than off spin, but thought the variation change was what was needed with specialist slow bowlers Lyon and Jon Holland bowling 81 overs between them.

“I’ve been bowling on my bowling for a long time, but the last three months specifically, just getting a bit faster through the air and just making sure that I’m working on my length.”

Recalled veteran Peter Siddle is now Victoria’s most prolific Test paceman.

The 33-year-old took three wickets to leapfrog Merv Hughes and become the ninth-most successful Australian quick with 213 dismissals.

Tim Paine’s decision to delay taking the new ball was logically sound given the reverse-swing Australia’s quicks were generating.

But holding off on until after lunch ultimately denied the visitors the chance to unsettle Shafiq and centurion Haris Sohail.

“I would’ve taken it after four overs, so I’m about an hour-and-a- half out ... I’m very surprised.” Former Test batsman Mark Waugh on Paine’s new-ball tactics.

Big day coming for Pakistan .

Pakistan need to get at least 3 wickets this session.

Abbas bowls such a good line but the slowness of the pitch is negating him. The batsmen just seem to have the time to deal him. If only he was a tad bit faster. These same deliveries 4-5 kph faster would be a real menace.

Australia just putting pressure on Pakistan since that missed stumping chance.

Aussie reserve team giving pak a pasting.. exposing useless Sarfaraz..

If Aussies draw this game, the last game will be a complete 50/50. Pak batting is always due a collapse at any point

Sarfraz for sure. Batting has completely regressed and wicketkeeping is average at best.

Also what was the point of Riaz. Doesn't take wickets and doesn't build pressure with economical spells

Poor so far from Yasir after 12 overs 40 runs no wickets :ashwin

May redeem himself later or in second innings!

Great to see the faith given to Bilal given he was selected as the specialist 2nd spinner.

Amazing fight from Australian batsmen. Very impressively handled the bowling so far. Yasir Shah is still the danger man though, one wicket and this could all fall like a pack of cards.

Can i ask mods something? Why we have to make threads for diff days? Why not just let pages continued?
Just like how many forum does! And its really convienent to continue reading or following conversation from where we left !

Its not easy to go and find old day threads everyday ,thats atleast for me? What say you?

There is no such thing as saved by the umpire as long as u have review!! Thier sole purpose is this if u cant use them well u cant complain at all

Umpires need to do their job. Yes the review was there but it should have been given Out. Teams shouldn't have to deal with 5 wrong decisions per innings by the umpire.

Yes its thier job but they r also humans and in 5 day testmatch they tend to make more mistakes than LOI hence given 2 review , btw can u metion what 5 decisions?

My point was only that u can criticize umpire but u cant say opposition was saved by umpire since its ur team who didnt use review

Looks like sarfaz is Saving review for the next innings but reviews donot get accumulate over innings

This commentator(Bazid Khan?) knows a lot about Pakistani domestics and is comparing with other domestic sysytems. Seems knowlegeable.

Good innings by both the batsmen so far. Both have scored a fifty with decent strike rates.

First 100+ opening partnership for Australia in tests since 2015 Ashes in England.

They have had just 3 100+ opening partnerships in Asia in last 10 years! This is the 4th one - 2 in UAE and 2 in India

Sarfraz is just simply not a Test Match captain. The problem isn't appointing a bad choice as captain. The problem is not realizing the mistake and letting him captain for another couple of years. The PCB should realize that Sarfraz is not cut out for Test captaincy because of his impatient attitude and let someone else take the reigns. The sooner the better.

The type of controls umpire have is kind of weird to me.

Had it been given out, it would have stayed out.

Now it's not out and it's stayed not out.

DRS should be used to avoid complications but it seems to me its creating more questions than answers because umpires face should be saved.

The body language of Sarfraz is so defeatist. Dude, your team has scored 482 runs and the opposition is only 132 right now. You are still in command of this Test match. After every close decision, he's shaking his head and keeping his head down after end of overs. He had the perfect leader in Misbah to learn from in how to captain in the UAE but in 4 years it seems he has learned nothing.

Can Pakistan pick up a wicket in this test match?

Poor poor strategy!

Misbah ul Haq was brilliant when it came to understanding spin bowling . . understand angles, fields, set up, etc. . the way he would devise plans for Yasir and saeed ajmal made them more successful than they would have been under any other captain (obviously they have the ability to execute as well) . .

Sarfaraz is poor when it comes to this!! He may be good off field (we don't know that) , but he is a bad tactician from what I have seen thus far. The fact that he is giving so many easy singles when you've got 482 on the board is poor poor captaincy!!! The fact that Yasir Shah has bowled 16 overs non stop (esp when the ball was only 13 overs old in the beginning) is also devoid of logic. Combine it with the fact that Yasir has been out of cricket for so long . . might have been good to give Hafeez a go who has a proven record against left handers . .

Anyway! Poor tactics in my opinion!

Just saw a clip, all the players seem to be drenched in sweat with clothes sticking to their bodies..quite extraordinary..

Yep. It's stupid actually. Basically if <50% of the ball hits the stumps and the umpires think its out, then its out but if he thinks it's not out, then its not out. What kind of stupid logic is that.

Imagine India playing against Pakistan's bowling 'attack' in UAE. KL Rahul and Rahane will return to form. Kohli will break Bradman's record of most runs in a test series.

That's exactly what the system is designed for to save umpire's face. This Umpire's call just does not make any sense. I recently saw an umpire (won't name) admitting in interview giving batsman out knowing" that it would come back to him as umpire's call and the on field decision would stay. So, this goes to show that umpires can still be biased and the system is there to bail them out every time.

Rahane!! Yasir will make him dance.

Pitch is getting quite good turn .Yasir is spinning the ball as well ..it's poor captaincy by sarfaraz

Err because the makers themselves have admitted there is an error limit and that error can be either ways? Think of the ball as a wave occupying a position from +5mm to -5mm from the center position of the actual graphic shown on the scene. So if the ball is shown hitting less than 50%, because of the error limit, it can mean both things. If the error is +5mm, it can mean the ball is hitting right in the middle of the stump. If the error is -5mm it can mean ball is missing the stump completely. So in that case which value should we follow for the error, +5mm or -5mm? Well that is when umpire's call is used to decide

Looks like we are now even struggling against non-asian team in our own backyard after playing for years.
We are basically playing with 2 bowlers with some couple of useless batsmen and will pay the price.

Khawaja can't survive Bangladeshi spinners not even 20 balls and here he is looking for his hundred.

So we are going to be defated here, I know collapse is on the card in second innings.

Somee were saying the game is already over when we got 482 :))) :))) :)))

Never underestimate Australia regardless of what team they have on the pitch.

Pakistani bowlers led by lethal fast bowler Wahab, world class all rounder Hafeez, promising offie all rounder Bilal are being treated very unfairly by Australian openers here.
