ponting and dravid are neck and neck. not much to seperate between the two

sangakkara looks well ahead of the rest when it comes to average

amla is behind others by some distance but he has also played a lot less matches although the average has now fallen below 50 and if he retires with his average in the 40s he will not go down as a great batsman

however he still has time to bring that up to 50 again unless he goes kolpak

Amla is just a purple patch bully. On both sides of it he has been pretty mediocre for prolonged periods of time. Doesn't compare with the best batsmen of this generation.

he was nothing special from 96 to 2001 and 2007 to 2012

but from 2002 to 2006 he was CRAZY good

As a pure batsman Sanga. As far as I know he played 1/3rd of his career as a wicketkeeper batsman still ended up being such a great batsman.

But if we take overall careers and discount Sanga as keeper than Dravid.

Averaged 40+ in Asia so hardly a failure against spin overall. Also 40+ in England with 4 hundreds.. seriously if these are the weak points of a batsman over the course of a 17 year career then I must say that's one hell of a batsman..

Sangakarra in home conditions overseas not so much.
Kallis might well have been a great no 3 averages 56 when coming in before 20 runs were scored (26 innings) compare it to Sachin who averages 40 (37 innings).

Overseas Dravid averages 53 to Sangakarras 44 against 5 main test teams this is why at home Sanga is ahead but not overseas or overall.
Purely on stats Sangakarra averages 60 at no 3 the best after Bradman (103) with a minimum 4000 runs qualification.
It might well be Dravid who's best due to his away average.

Amla being put up there with these 3 is a hillairious comparison, he had a brilliant purple patch but has failed in every single icc tournament and has also failed to step up after the retirements of Kallis and Smith. Only 1 de

OP has never seen the peak of Ponting, he is well ahead of these 3 imo.

Sangakara had a brilliant peak where he was one of the top players in Odis and tests during this peak, furthermore he was carrying a weaker team. Definitely a ATG but not quite in the Sachin,Lara, etc bracket.

Dravid was a brilliant test player and respectable odi player but couldn't dominate an attack like Ponting,Lara, Sachin, etc that's why I don't place him alongside these 3. Also he was never clearly the best player in his team or even amongst the best batsmen during his era. He's an ATG and well ahead of Amla though.

Sangakarra averages 66 as a pure Batsman he never tailed off towards the end of his career like Ponting the only issue is his overseas record against the main test teams.

I think Sanga is probably one of the most underrated batsmen of the modern era. Dravid and Sanga were the most consistent of the four batsmen. Sanga was pure class. I may rate him above Ponting. Dravid and him were kind of on par in my book. Ponting's last five or six years have to play against him a bit.. He was awesome in his hey day.

Only reason Sanga doesn't get rated as highly tbh is that he is Sri Lankan, and peeps discount his runs. He did pretty well around the world as well. If he did not perform on pacey wickets in SA, then Ponting's numbers are as poor in India. So I do not buy that Sanga can't play on fast wickets, as his average in Australia and England shows nor do I think Ponting can't play spin, as his batting against Pak spinners showed.

Sangakarra started off as a decent wk batsman averaging in the 40s but became a great in the 2nd half of his career averaging 66 in 86 tests as a pure batsman.
There wasn't any tailing off towards the end suggesting he should've kept playing for another 2-3 years.

Dravid gets more brownie point for delivering overseas where no.3 position isn't that easy to bat at.

Amla is also a very very good no.3 bat but the competitors are tougher here. So he comes last.

Ponting wins it no doubt.Arguably the greatest no.3 bat of all time behind Bradman only.

Looking at the last 25 tests there is big gulf between Ponting and Sangakarra.
Ponting averages 33 to Sangakarras 64 this dented Pontings career average and made Sangakarra the highest averaging batsman in his era.

Dravid is easily ahead of Sanga in Eng, NZ, India and West Indies. Dravid averages 29 in SA and Sanga 35. Dravid averages 78 in Pak, Sanga 86. Sanga has better records in Aus and SL.

Dravid pawns sanga outside asia, sanga's average is built on bashing minnows and bashing teams at home where he averages 60 (jayawardne the biggest FTB also averages 60 in lanka so that should give you the idea).

Sanga is still an ATG but a level below dravid.

Also Ponting is not in the league of sachin or lara, a guy who was owned and destroyed in India can never be in the league of sachin who has done well in every country.

Amla is good, a player for all conditions but his peak was very short and his average has dropped below 49, so he can't be mentioned alongside these names, he's not even an ATG

Based on peer estimate, statistics and my general assessment while watching the game:

First is Ponting, who was frequently rated just behind Tendulkar and Lara as the best batsman of the era. Ultra dominant peak from 2002 - 2006 and scored enough runs outside of his peak to secure his reputation.

Next in Sangakarra. Simply excellent in most conditions and held up very high by his peers. Was fluent and with no real flaws.

After that is Dravid. Great player, but unlike the first two, not quite as dominant nor likely to cause fear for his opponents. Very successful in most conditions but never quite the no.1 in the world like the first two, and in terms of his peers, the first two were simply rated better. He was a run accumulator but its also how you score the runs that determines how highly you are ranked.

Last is Amla. At one point, in 2012/2013, he was going so well he could eclipse Dravid, but has since receded. Great player nonetheless and somewhat underrated.

I dont the get the bias here against SC batsmen , we bash Sanga for scoring heavily at home but he dint exactly struggle away , did he ? Ponting on the other had struggled not just in SC conditions but also when it swung . He was hardly a better batsmen than Sanga away from home . Every other stat suggests Sanga was better . The whole argument of being dominant in Tests in nonsense .

Ponting's obviously the most dynamic and dominating of these batsmen. But he was poor in Asia and his dominance coincided with poorer attacks (though he did bully peak Flintoff).

Sanga, meanwhile, was a better strokesman than Dravid, but was never tested as thoroughly as the Wall. He was the biggest flat-track and Bangla/Zim bully in the history of mankind, and rarely got the chance to face great attacks abroad (he hilariously bullied Shaoib though).

Amla's career can only be properly assessed in a few years time; but averaging in the 100s vs Anderson in Eng is no joke.

Sanga was hardly better against all opposition on all surfaces. He struggled in India, SA and WI. He was averaging 30 before his last series in England after failing in 3 series. Did well in last series and after that his average crossed 40. Played 1 good knock in Aus, but couldn't be tested with lack of multiple tours.

He scored 7 centuries in Aus, NZ, SA, Eng and WI with 2764 runs in 37 matches (66 innings) at avg of 44.5.

On the other hand Dravid scored 5420 runs in 63 matches at avg of 53 with 13 centuries. He is way ahead of Sanga in this regard. Or to put it in context, by the time Dravid played his 65 inning he had already scored more than 3500 runs at avg of 64 and 9 centuries.

Sanga was not really a flat track bully in my opinion, but look at his number of tons when he faced best bolwing units during his career. Aus, SA, Eng and SL were the lowest averaging bowling units after Sanga debuted. Since he didn't face SL bowlers so to normalize, let's look tons against others.



That's 7 ton in 50 tests. Outside of Aus, SA, Eng and SL bolwing units, we have Ind, Pak, WI and NZ. WI is minnow when they play outside and only decent at home. Same can be said about Indian bowling attack, but they are among the best at home. Sanga has 1 ton in 10 test matches in India+WI. That leaves Pak and NZ. Sanga did fine against NZ with 4 tons and really dominated Pak with 10 tons.

I won't call Sanga a flat track bully because he has played good knocks in tougher pitches as well, but apart from Pakistan, Sanga didn't score many tons against good bowling unit in all conditions or good bowling units in home conditions.

Jayawadene is underrated in PP. He carried SL batting when it came to scoring tons against SA, Aus and Eng. Jaya was off course an inferior batsmen due to not doing so well in different conditions, but scoring against good attacks don't get enough credit in PP.

Mahela doesn't average 50 either, and his away stats are very poor. Neither are ATG

I think he toured enough and he did fine with some issues in places like SA, Ind and WI. My point was not about touring. It was simply him not firing in all cylinders when it came to big teams with good bowling units. He played 50 tests home and away against Aus, SA and Eng( three top bowling sides in all conditions during his career) and he has only 7 tons in those 50 tests. That's a bit low for his caliber to be honest when we are talking about large sample size of 50 tests.

Most ATG batsmen score lots of tons against top 3 bowling sides and that't why they get rated pretty high. I have no issue with Sanga or anyone else cashing when playing against minnows, but he played enough against others as well so minnow bashing is not an issue in my opinion. I think he went big only against Pakistan, and pretty much good to decent against others.

I agree that if he had played more against top sides likes SA, Aus or Eng then his average would have been
less, but that's expected from any batsman. But we have enough sample size to see how he did so that's not an issue in rating him.

People seem to conveniently forget that Amla bats in by far the most bowling friendly conditions in the world for his home games. Neither has he played tens of games against the minnow sides and plundered thousands of runs against them.

Sangakkara's average run count is highly inflated due to these two factors and so is Dravid's.

Against the top five teams of the last 20 years (Australia, South Africa, England, Pakistan and India), the average of these four batsmen when batting in away or neutral venues is as follows:

Hashim Amla : Overall average of 56 (45 vs AUS, 60 vs IND, 60 vs ENG, 70 vs PAK)

Kumar Sangakkara: Overall average of 49 (60 vs AUS, 36 vs IND, 41 vs ENG, 69 vs PAK, 35 vs SAF)

Rahul Dravid: Overall average of 48 (41 vs AUS, 68 vs ENG, 78 vs PAK, 29 vs SAF)

Ricky Ponting: Overall average of 41 (41 vs ENG, 26 vs IND, 100+ vs PAK, 46 vs SAF)

As you can see, Amla has been unstoppable against three of the top teams in their own dens, while being very good against the fourth as well. The other three have failed against at least one, if not more, of the top four/five (depending on which team they belong to) teams of the last 20 years.

Amla hasn't bullied the weaker teams as severely as the other three and neither has he gotten the chance to destroy teams on home pitches tailor-made for batsmen. That is why his overall stats don't match up to Ponting, Sanga and Dravid's but he was better than any of them when it comes to standing up against the best teams.

Hopefully, Amla puts on his HTB-ing shoes when he bats against the Indians and Bangladeshis in a few months.

All in all in Tests Ponting and Sanga on the same level for mine. Ponting was more dominant but Sanga was more consistent plus kept wickets in a third of the matches as well. Then Dravid and Amla after him.

Here are their numbers against the top seven since Ponting’s Test debut. Should mention that excluding post 2000s Windies which for mine shouldn’t really be considered as a top team Dravid’s average actually drops to 48 while for the others on there there’s not much of a change.

None of these guys shred the attack in Tests , Dravid as an impact player was above Ponting and Sanga . Some of Indias best overseas wins is cos of Dravid . He never played an anchors role in Tests .

Hashim Amla doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the conversation. This guy has the most misleading away record ever. He filled his boots massively in 1 away series in each country and has been a dud in others. There's not a single country away in which he has been consistently successful over the course of his career. The guy was a near liability on his last tours to India and Aus; especially Aus where he was schooled by Hazlewood. He doesn't even pass the consistency test to be considered amongst the greats.

Not to mention about his legendary choking skills in important ODI Tournament matches.. I'll put him just second to Kohli in the matter of choking consistency.

Nowhere near the Top 5 batsmen of this generation.

It’s not just some “excuse” there’s a reason why Test keepers are generally considered all-rounders. You don’t just turn up to the game, put the gloves on and become a keeper. It’s a heavy workload both on and off the field. For SC keepers it’s even tougher given that they have to keep to quality spinners in fairly difficult conditions a lot of the time.

So to somehow expect a 50+ average especially from a wk/bat batting in the top order is just nonsense (ie comparing specialist Test bat averages to wk/bats 1:1). Fyi apart from Sanga only four other long-standing keepers have averaged over 40 in Test cricket history and only two of them averaged 45+. Tbh I have no idea how Sanga managed to cope with having to keep to Murali and co and bat one down in his first six years without losing the plot completely. That too while juggling the same job in ODIs as well for the most part. One heck of an introduction to international cricket.

In my lifetime. From the best of the best there's only 3 who can be in the same rank. Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting and Brian Lara. Those 3 were in a league of their own.

Then come the likes of Dravid, Sangakkara.

During that same period, Sanga averaged 60 as keeper in first 18-19 innings. While keeping certainly takes a toll on body, how does those number suggest that keeping was affecting his batting and giving up gloves made him perform to his potential?

AB has 7 tons, 2K+ runs and averages 57 in 24 tests played as keeper. He also averaged less than 50 as pure batsman.

Someone can start arguing that all AB had to do is to play as keeper-batsman for his entire career and he would have ended with a lot more tons and higher average. That will be another causation correlation fallacy.

Can't have it both ways right. Otherwise Sanga must be the greatest ever Test wk/bat having kept to Murali and co and scoring 7k runs more than Gilly and that too while averaging 57 compared to Gilly's 47?

As for the AB example laughable at best. Twenty odd Tests as wk/bat that's all he could handle that too while batting down the order for an ATG team.
