Back to back duck for our hero..Failed to cash on some soft runs..It seems he is following Pakpassion..

Time for Duminy to perform with the bat..BTW excellent stuff from Cook..

England back in it. Amla and ABdV 109 between them - England will take that.

Really missing Finn.....

Note to batsmen: Don't attack Moeen Ali if you don't hold a Pakistani citizenship, he'll eventually embarrass you. Play him smartly like Amla does.

Another duck for 'best since Viv Richards'. Seems like he's being forced to play Test cricket.

237/1 to 295/5 - England will be happy with that after 1st two sessions with ball were poor for them.

SA should look to get over 400 in first inning.I have a feeling they will collapse early morning tomorrow in first session and end at 370-375..

Good day of Test cricket, Bavuma and De Kock managed to recover the innings that badly wobbled for a moment there.

Pretty mediocre day for England overall. Not a surprise.

Done the English thing and taken the foot off the gas again.

We're too nice for our own good.

Game isn't gone (yet) but that was just pathetic at the end. Bavuma could have made a pot of tea in between Anderson running up to bowl and the ball pitching on the wicket.

Not the first time that we have wasted the second new ball recently.

Is Anderson finished?

Just watching the highlights. Might have been a different day if the old cracks had not opened once more; namely, a pretty crappy dropped catch by Cook off Amla.

Do we have any natural slip catchers anymore? It's a very underrated skill by many fans and can really make a difference. Strauss and particularly Swann are greatly missed for this.

It's hugely important. A good slip cordon can make a good bowler look great.

Swann was the most important England player of the last ten years, for his wicket-taking, surety at slip, counterattacking late order contributions and tactical advice to his skippers.

Bairstow is not up to test standard as a keeper at present. With the Beard capable enough at #7 surely we can get a specialist keeper in?

S.A 475 all out - should be a good 1st inns total this.

De kock in ODI mode here.

SA 466/8

De kock onto 122*

What a great talent, I've always rated him and beyond me why he has not featured enough in the SA Test team. I think injuries? anyhow he's the future of the SA batting line up. Wonderful knock.

:))) :))) Indians still buttt hurt over being owned by Moeen Ali, you see them in these threads every time he doesn't do well :)))

Two world class batsmen on crease..C'mon AB get one more before stumps.

Every time De Cock does well, I am reminded of Unmukt chand. Both of them were stand out U-19 players (Sami Aslam would also run them close) of their time with Unmukt slightly ahead IMO. Now see where Unmukt is and what accomplishments De Cock has already had in int'l cricket.

Cook finally scores some runs. Mamoon is relieved.

Not much value to this innings because the series is dead and buried already, just like Hashim 'i chickened out from captaincy mid series like a coward' Amla's hundred yesterday was a nothing innings in the context of the series.

this series is the proof why England can never become true no. 1 side..

I think England lack ruthlessness. Even when they are on top, they will not kick you hard.

More important aspect is atrocious fielding.. It hurts when bowlers keep bending their backs just to be consistently let down by fielders..

I wouldn't say there's been loads of atrocious fielding. The issue seems to be Bairstows keeping and the decision between Cook and Bairstow as to whether who should be going for it. The Stokes chance was a far fetched one at best and he did a good job to get a hand on it. Admittedly our slip cordon isn't quite something nearly every other country would be jealous of like it used to be just a short time ago but that's unfortunately what happens when you start to rebuild and no one has quite spent a lot of time in the slips. Hopefully over time they'll get better at it, and so will Bairstow (Prior started off as a pretty mediocre keeper). Whilst on a side note Taylor has been an absolute gun at short leg.

The only country that ever has the ruthlessness of burying another country when they're down is Australia. Most other countries are just happy to win the series. Maybe India perhaps at home in recent years, but you get the point.

Even South Africa when they were no.1 rarely battered teams.

We are the nice guys of cricket. Us and NZ anyway :)

They will lose this match and take the series 1-2.

Top knock from de Kock. SA will have to screw up big time to lose from here. Cook and Root have a lot to do to get out of this one. Should be a good tussle.

This match, like every test match, does matter. South Africa will climb up to #2 if they win this match and England will remain a mid-table team. You have my permission to weep.

It does 'matter', but the legacy of the series will be one of a resounding win for England. In the three 'live' matches England got a credible draw and two massive wins. That's what people will remember - not anything about this match to be honest.

Yes, I'm sure they will seek solace in climbing to number 2 after losing two high profile series in a row, with the captaining surrendering.

To say that England will still be ranked 5th whether they win the series 3-0, 2-0 or 2-1 against the number one ranked side in their own conditions shows how ridiculous the rankings are anyway.

Bilal7 is just again doing what he does in the majority of his posts - clutching at whichever straws are still available in an attempt to uphold the integrity of his generally moronic views.

Amla plays fluently but not surprised since he has indian blood.

Lol I wouldn't mind if India lose dead rubber after series win in South Africa. Won't even matter if we ranked 10th in the ranking.

Sadly I don't think we have quality to win test series in either Australia or South Africa in my lifetime or maybe ever.

It's first world problem in cricket ie not being ruthless after securing away series win.

Well exactly. It would be nice to put the cherry on top by taking the dead rubber, for a 3-0, but even winning the series is an outstanding effort and a brilliant result. Away in South Africa is one of the hardest tours there is.

Quite a few times Root got out at the start of a fresh day. Let's see how he goes here, his innings is more important than Chef's.

A loss here for England won't matter much.Obviously, they have won the series and years down the line it will be remembered as one of England away series victory. But for Saffers a win will certainly boost their confidence. The next test game will be six months later and they haven't won a test game for an year. Surely they would look to get their morale up with the victory.

England are probably the best in the world at the moment. They play well away and at home , usually ashes is where they slip bad.

I can bet that if Amla would have failed in the first innings, he would called Cook's innings useless because the series is won already. However, since Amla scored and he has to hail his meaningless hundred as one of the finest innings in history, he has no choice but to unwillingly appreciate Cook's effort.

It is quite possible that Joe Root might as well be the greatest English batsman of all time.

I was thinking along the same lines. Earlier they showed a table of the leading run scorers in England's history. What stood out for me was they're all pretty "average". England is due an ATG.
