South Africa 123/2 overnight in response to 177 All out by Pakistan.

All in all a poor effort in batting and bowling by Pakistan and hopes of a series equalizer will be further dampened if South Africa take a sizable lead today.

A monumental task awaits Pakistan on the field and if past performances are a guide, things will only get more difficult for the visitors.

Hosts will cross 300 here as they bat deep with Philander at 8 . Faf will miss not playing Keshav on this pitch in 3rd innings .

Duanne Olivier could bowl a beach ball and find the edge of an opposing bat.

That would sound like hyperbole in the extreme if it didn’t come out of the mouth of South Africa’s leading Test wicket-taker Dale Steyn.

Olivier built on his man-of-the-match performance from the first Test and took 4/48 as Pakistan were reduced to 177 in their first innings on the first day of the second Test here on Thursday. South Africa had reached 123/2 in reply at stumps.

Steyn had rich praise for Olivier‚ as well as the rest of the attack which has helped make South Africa is difficult a proposition on home soil.

“It has everything‚” he said about the attack. “It has pace. 'KG' [Kagiso Rabada] has great pace‚ you have Vernon [Philander] who has incredible skill and he is relentless because he is going to stay there the whole day.

“I’ve played a fair amount of cricket and I bring a bit of calm and composure when things are getting out of hand.

“What more do you want? Vernon is averaging 21‚ KG is averaging 22 and 'Doozle' [Duanne Olivier] is averaging 16.You can argue who is better than that.”

There was a slight surprise at the start of the day when South Africa uncharacteristically opted to omit a spinner for a Newlands Test. Keshav Maharaj made way as Philander returned.

“The last couple of Test matches that we have played haven’t gone beyond 60 overs‚” reminded Steyn. “You are not utilising that part. I back it‚” he said about going with an all seam attack.

“I thought it was hard work with three seamers at SuperSport Park and 'Kesh' [Keshav Maharaj] did not have to bowl a lot with the seamers taking the bulk‚ if not all of the wickets.

“I think all seam is the way to go and with Pakistan having so many left-handers we’ve got pretty handy right arm offies in Theunis [de Bruyn] and Aiden [Markram] and Dean Elgar can also bowl a couple of overs.

“All in all‚ the talk of the tour will be our fast bowlers.”

Although he lapped up all the plaudits at Centurion when he became the country’s leading Test wicket-taker‚ Steyn’s role in the team is not quite as pivotal as it used to be. He acknowledged that in a roundabout way.

“It’s a tough one. I wanna be the guy the captain always turns to but I think when you have guys like KG and he’s just an absolute superstar and Duanne who is hot right now‚ if I was the captain I would give them the ball.

“I’m happy to play my part. If I’m taking twos and threes I can get into that patch where KG and Doozle are and I’ll take five. I just want to keep doing my job.

“Test cricket is hard. It doesn’t matter if you have played 100 Tests or just a few‚ it is hard work.”

The one batsman who saw the ball like ... a beach ball on the first day was Markram. That was before he was dismissed with what turned out to be the last ball of the day for 78 off 96 deliveries.

“It is a pity we lost Aiden but that was the ball of the day. It was a good one‚” said Steyn.

That innings helped put the hosts in a position of strength and Steyn hopes for once in this series the batsmen can assert themselves and dominate across three sessions.

“I’d love a boring day‚” said Steyn about the prospects for the second day. “I measured something like 37km in my first two days in Centurion. I’d love to sit with my feet up.”

^ This theory that visitors have lot of left- handers & hence Keshav loses his effectiveness is strange . This was also the case in 1st Test where he played .

Ramiz taking away credit from Abbas and giving it to the crack on the off stump line.

Pakistan bowlers should target the crack and let it do the magic for them.

Ramiz thinks if he speaks against Pakistan he will get repect from opposition

Amla's technique was always shoddy to be honest. He's done well for himself due to grit.

Like i said that decision to bowl first was dumb by Faf. He overestimated his own team here.

He backed his bowlers to bowl Pakistan out in 2 sessions which happened. He also knew days 2 and 3 would be the best for batting. I wouldn't trust this SA batting order on the 1st morning on a green deck. I think it was the correct decision.

There was barely any lateral movement yesterday. The pitch is now offering movement off the deck and your lot will have to bat last here against Abbas and Yasir. Yes you are still favourites to win at present but Faf has simply made it harder to do so.

You might be right there: it was a defensive move in the hope that the hapless Pakistani batsmen would lose the game before the hapless South African batsmen could!

He should be going Round The Wicket more.

I wish Ehsan Adil was there.

This crack would be perfect for a tall fast-medium quick bowling a full length.
KP proving me wrong there!

Abbas has adjust his lines from yesterday and getting ball in right place, hopefully wickets will come.

Because there is no Fourth quick to share the workload.

I personally think Mohammad Amir isn't interested in playing Test cricket. He pondered over retirement but soon realised that the backlash was not worth it. It makes absolutely no sense as to how a genuine fast bowler who bowls in the mid 140s in LOIs is reduced to trundling in the 130s if not a lack of interest.

Any lead above 50 will be devastating for pak. Sa are well ahead in the game

Looks like Abbas has found his rhythm, really smashing that crack outside off, This could get sticky. But a 50 run lead for us here and I think we've got the game won.

Yeah this might have suited Adil

Amir used to bring it in from over the wicket beautifully as well. ( Rohit SHarma wicket in CT 2017)

Once SA gets thru this period, they will be all set. We need wickets and soon.

Fahim should've played in this match. Yasir Shah averages over 50 in SENA countries, I don't know why Mickey and Saifi make such stupid decisions sometimes.

So declining Steyn can bowl 145+ but M Amir can't touch 140? What has happened to Amir?

Got to say Faf is a gun captain (only thing he's good at these days anyway), trusted his seamers to blast the Pakistan batsmen out by exploiting the juice that was on offer in the first our. In doing so protected our best bat Makram to express himself in slightly easier conditions. Pity he got out to a freakish delivery, lead would be 40+ by now.
