after all the over the top praises for Hughes, I wonder if he is the same person who walked out to open the innings for Australia. Looks out of depth everytime he is up against quality fast bowling.

He always looks awful but if he makes 40 or do he becomes very hard to bowl to. Doesn't get to 40 often enough.

lol, massive seam movement there for Vern.

no idea why they're bowling so short to Marsh...

3 devastating balls to Marsh from Morkel, beaten all ends up each time.

Morne bowled a great over to Marsh. Its a shame its only a two tests series.

Didn't Hughes get an important hundred like one test ago? He's underrated on PP.

His first in 2.5 years. And he's only passed 50 once in the same period. I think he's rated appropriately.

ouch!
Poor Marsh gets hit in the private region.

The session ends with this over. A brilliant session for SA.

definitely. He's looks crap at the start, but when he gets in he scores big. He has three centuries in 13 tests. That's impressive. He's got them all in difficult conditions too, South Africa and Sri Lanka. Shows the ability to play in different places (rather than just dominate at home).

In fact I'd go to say out of all the youngsters, he's the batsman that's impressed me the most. Better than umar akmal, Bravo etc.

Khawaja's technique looks alright, but I don't see anything particularly special about him. Certainly wouldn't bring him in for hughes.

What a ball by Steyn to get Ponting out!!! Damn I am actually going for the Australia here.. Steyn can become probably the greatest fast bowler of all time if he keeps up at this rate...

STeyn playing at a different level, Aus bats seems to have no clue how to play his short stuff...

22.6 Steyn to Clarke, FOUR, what a stirring response from Pup! Length ball from Steyn, not the usual driving length, at 135 kph only this time, which must have helped. Clarke gets into line this time and drives down the correct line to send the ball past Steyn to the right of the stumps as he dives. A touch of Tendulkar in that shot.:sachin

Looks like Steyn is a one man show like Zaheer no support from the other bowlers it seems..

Steyn's dialled down his pace somewhat in recent years to focus on line, length and swing. He's showing today he can still crank it up to 150ks and really make the batsmen hop when he wants.

Aus need to score 350 plus score here to put Sa under pressure.. because Sa have a very strong batting line up.. and the pitch will settle down.

Ponting needs to retire.. he is not haft the batsman he once was..

Have to give it to Micheal Clarke, playing a gem off an Inns here!

Seems to be dealing in just 4s but the way hes fought it through after been worked over by steyn shows what a class player he is

great pitch 4 real cricket

pitches like this be made every where...

but i guess this will happen as soon one player retires.. :D

Wow...watching Steyn bowl is like a throwback to a time where fast bowler's ruled. He's certainly ruling on this pitch.

That Steyn v Clark battle is worth watching on repeat for those who haven't seen it.

Funny it's like a one man show from either team at the moment clarke from australia and Steyn from South Africa.

And clarke's defending against Steyn yet attacking the other bowlers pretty viciously.

South Africa are killing it. Haddin is a big waste of space get T.Paine in.

Haddin is just a rubbish batsman.. Why are Aus not thinking about future?? what has Pain done wrong he looked a good batsman better than this Haddin.. Haddin looks like getting out any bowl...

Exactly my thinking.. i think to much Politics going in Aus camp.. Haddin might be a good friend of the team mades and selectors there..

or alternatively the selectors might be playing the experienced and seniority card for the reason of his selection.

some terrible shot selection from the Aussie batsmen.

Some atrocious decisinos from the people who matter. Lunch at 13.30 after play began at 12.15. Ideall,y should have had a two and a half hours long session first up after an early lunch before the play began.

Then at the end, with light still looking good, they decided to go off.

Clarke is pretty much last man standing here!

What an inns though! Reminded me off azhar mahmoods two brillianr knocks v S.A in the late 90s.

I think the Aussies bowlers will cause just as many problems when they come out to bowl tomorrow.

Good knock from Pup in tough batting conditions, shame the rest of the batsmen couldn't follow his example. Watson got a jaffa though. Hopefully it rains all night and stops just before play starts so it's nice and moist!

Paine's been injured and has no recent form to speak of if I recall correctly. But yes, Haddo is on his last legs I reckon. They will probably persevere with him into the end of the OZ summer and if he doesn't turn it around that will be it for him.

Good debut from Philander, but when I see his name I always think of his dropping Robin Uthappa in the World T20 in 2007, it was the funniest way to catch a ball I've seen:

Reasonably happy given the pitch and how the Saffers bowled. Clarke has stepped up.

Ponting time is almost out for you.

Brilliant stuff from steyn and clarke. This type of performances is what test cricket is all about.

That pic ^^ LOL.

Overall even day, considering the pitch and conditions. MC played a gem of a innings, probably his best to date considering how movement the bowlers were getting.

Some seriously good shots played by Michael Clarke

Steyn and Philander bowled some peach deliveries!

I expect SA will have a lead of around 70 at the end of 1st innings

Seems like Steyn bowled with a lot of fire. :sami
