I think he still has a role to play in T20s. But I don't think SA need him in ODIs. Klassen and Van Der Dussen have done well . Zubayr Hamza and Kyle Verreynne are also waiting for their chance. Furthermore Bavuma and Markham can bat at 3, don't think SA need Faf in ODIs.
