that is what i think too . can saffers with just 2 1/2 pacers restrict us to under 250 ?

Yes, they can do that, but they need to polish off the top order quickly. Indian batsmen are proving more resilient than they thought. Except Philo, no bowler is seriously troubling the batsmen. Steyn has been less effective than usual and India must cash in and post a lead of 300.

Wow, India got lead :O Surely SA underperformed in the first innings!

Misunderstood bowler Steyn he goes for quite a long time looking ineffective, but when he fires he takes lots of wickets.

Good discussion happening. I support Ackerman's view about replacements. But, this rule can be seriously exploited by teams

Hmmm India need to make an attempt at scoring here, batting time is good but 9 overs, 9 runs.

As the day wears on the Yarps will feel the loss of Morkel. Once Duminy and Tahir start serving up those pies the Indian batsmen will feast on them

India can only ride their luck for so long....they are going to edge one of those deliveries sometime soon. They might as well try and score before they do.

Not saying they should go all guns blazing...but look for a single to rotate the strike. Don't allow the bowler to keep bowling at you.

Whats up with India. This is Chris Tavareqesque scoring. It's all good to keep wickets but you gotta score runs to win

India need to crease some scoreboard pressure. Rotate the strike at least, so that the bowler has to keep adjusting.

Any other team would have been allout under 30 on this pitch with this bowling.

what a test match!!

I reckon it's easier to face Steyn than Kallis, Philtrundler on this pitch

Tahir can be handful with the cracks.. But he needs to land the ball

I am seriously amazed by the patience shown by these batters except Dhawan, they aren't scoring much but have resisted on so many occasions from driving or poking deliveries which are outside off

This is a pleasant surprise, watching this Indian performance. Have to say Vj is doing what has been asked of him. Blunt the new ball. Scores when he get the opportunities. Good technique and patience, to leave as many deliveries as he has, without a risky slash or drive.

kallis is swinging 30 degrees on this pitch. Only way you are going to survive is by defense. Excellent job negating the attack done by both batsmen.

South African commentators crying about replacing injured players. Rules been like that for ages bro!

You can only negate so much. There has to be a time when you look to score.

Sometimes, India are guilty of doing something whichmay not be correct. Learn to take critiscm.

India do need to make sure they keep accumulating runs. Its the kind of pitch where one wicket can trigger a collapse, so now the batsmen are set, they have to try and get something.

At last SA bowlers have started bowling on the pads/ legs after seeing the ball being collected by keeper when it's outside off umpteen no of times

Disagreed on substitues rule because one batsmen can fake an injury on day 5 and get a spinner inducted

You are absolutely right but you do have to look at the context of the match right now. SA are a bowler down and their fourth string is either Tahir or Duminy. It's good that the batters have already made the bowlers bowl to them now, rather than at the 4th or 5th stump. Just a little longer and the old ball will pretty much be there for the attack.

+1

Wish they'd stop whining.

Bring in a substitute rule and it will be abused by all. Bowlers performing badly will suddenly get injured mid match. Spinners coming in for seamer in the 4th innings etc.

SA still have 3 seamers and a spinner left anyway - pretty much for every other side in the world plays with.

Some posters are getting impatient now. This is a test match on a good pitch not a t20 on a patta wicket.

When India scores 380 in 50 for fun, it's a problem.
When goes at 2 in a test match it's a problem.

They do seem to have a plan. Lets wait and see how this pans out..

Exactly. It's been long since we saw a battle between equals. Of late, the home teams have been too dominant and the matches have all been one sided. Good to see such a high quality battle between the bat and ball.

Robin jackman really talks some utter rubbish.

The icc officials allowed runners for players who were clearly just tired but they are going to medically check a player before allowing a replacement?....yeah right.

In this game im sure tahir would have been declared seriously injured after the first day.

South African Commie going on about how India is riding on luck, there have been few misses. haha

Some positive shots on the offside now.. Wicket settling down. Reward for patience

like for like replacements

Staying fit for 5 days is just part of the game, if pattinson could have been replaced at Adelaide SA wouldn't have won that series in australia.

Sometimes it helps you sometimes it hurts.

Indians need to keep up the scoreboard pressure. Rotate the strike, get singles. Don't let the game stagnate. Blocking till stumps is an Englandesque tactic and won't work.

Philander looking a little pedestrian when the ball's getting older..

Thats better. Pujara needs to get going. Vijay has done better since lunch. Got to keep the board ticking.

Spent all that time getting in, now they have to make it count. Again, not by going after every ball, but just by even rotating the strike. It makes a difference.

The comments on scoring rate is well taken, but India is doing well at the moment. The match is slowly drifting away from the Saffers. Vijay has surely risen in my esteem after this innings, even in the first knock he did look composed though he did not score much.

That's probably because of Pujara and Vijay. You'd see more aggressive strokeplay from Kohli, Rohit..
