Terrific pull from :kohli Kallis smacked for a :4

Meanwhile nohit vs Steyn in progress ... patience test continues

Mohit: "not to jinx it, but i think this is the first time in my cricket watching history of 23 years that an Ind batting line up has shown discipline. Even the tests we've won overseas earlier, there was either flamboyant batting or sheer individual brilliance, but never this application. Irrespective of where this test heads, I guess the Ind batters would have won respect."

I tend to agree

Brilliant batting from India so far,

No 1 would have though they would even be 140 odd for 3

50 overs and 3 wickets lost - India has exceeded expectations after their terrible ODI losses. Take score to 350 please, India has not done this against a tough opponent overseas for some time now.

For me the Indian team has done enough to warrant respect. I expected them to bundle out at somewhere around 175-200. But they've played with extreme caution and discipline, which is refreshing to see. I hope other teams take a note of this.

Saffers have clearly made a blunder by playing Tahir. Another pacer should have been the way to go here. We have batted quite sensibly by playing out the quicks and attacking Tahir.

I somehow fear Kohli is a 100-120ish player, where he settles for a century but doesn't really go big.

:tahir is back. Need to score, but treat with caution. Watch out for the wrong'ne

India doing great job. The way they handle Steyn and Vernon is admirable. Both Kholi and Pujara leaving the ball very well. This is key to success in SA/AUS... Kholi specially has shown lot of temperament... He wants to make a name here... Great batting skills from an Asian...

Lol. Rahane and Dhoni after him. Suddenly our batting performance looks ordinary. 151/4 can easily become 200 all out.

I suppose MSD and Ashwin can support :kohli if it gets worse in last session ...

Last over before tea started ....

Don't know that it was some daring plan, it was trash full tosses any first class bat would put them away.

India have played well for the most part. The only downside is they haven't really kept the scoreboard ticking, to force the SA bowlers to make mistakes. Obviously they want to keep their wickets safe but from what I can see it's not a wicket that has a lot of gremlins in it. There's not a lot of seam movement and the ball isn't really swinging. They don't want these bowlers bowling too many deliveries in a row to the same batsmen or eventually they will get out. But I guess with 3 soft dismissals they will be kicking themselves. Need to find some singles and keep rotating the strike, and try and hit Tahir while he is on, he looks like a grade A hack.

Kohli looks set for a ton which will be very well deserved.

^ 3RPO isn't bad - works out to 270 off 90. The Indian batting plan was sound - Kohli to score runs and the other end to hold the fort. Che's untimely dismissal sort of disturbed their plans though.

Yep. the scoring rate has been poor. But most of our batsmen seem to be struggling with the bounce more than anything else. We don't play swing bowling that badly to be honest. And Tahir has been going at over 6 an over.

To be fair, it's always wise to withhold judgement on a team's performance until both teams have batted. If SA get rolled for 150 then India's effort will have been outstanding. But I feel that on this wicket 350-400 is probably a par score.

It isn't bad when you have the bowling to take 20 wickets. But we need a special batting performance to do well here. Kohli has scored at a strike rate of 75 which clearly shows that the others haven't really tried to score much. SA weather conditions can change quite quickly and hence it is important to score quickly when the ball is not doing much in the air.

Kohli has played positively and hit balls that are there to be hit. I feel like the others have just tried to drop anchor and survive. Part of the art of leaving the ball is knowing which balls to NOT leave.

Kohli is a natural stroke maker. He is the best ODI bat going around these days. He rarely gets tied down even while struggling. I would not normally expect to see Kohli make 20 off 75 - he will either get out quickly if it is not his day or score big and fast. So you can't compare the scoring rates of different players. Indian strategy looked good to me until that unfortunate run out.

Indian batsmen did not get a practice match here, and ODIs don't give good practice for a test match. So Indian batsmen did well by being careful and patient, if they had gone down 6/80 now in the name of being aggressive, they would be in deep trouble in the test already.

Absolutely.
