Sri Lanka [154 & 197/2] beat South Africa [222 & 128] by 8 wkt in 2nd Test, seal historic series win

Sri Lanka have never won a Test series in South Africa, and starting from Thursday, 21 February, they will have to hold off a home team that hasn’t lost at Port Elizabeth in eleven years to do that.

Overview

South Africa v Sri Lanka
2nd Test
St. George’s Park, Port Elizabeth
Thursday, 21 February; 10.00am local, 08.00am GMT

In an extraordinary turn of events, South Africa are playing catch-up one match into a home Test series. This wasn't expected by many. Sri Lanka hadn’t won a Test in South Africa in over seven years. Co-incidentally, that last – and their only other - win in the country had also come in Durban, in December 2011.

Sri Lanka rewrote history to achieve this feat. In successful run chases in Tests, no Sri Lankan batsman now has more runs than Kusal Perera’s 153*, and no last-wicket pair has strung together more than the 78 unbeaten runs that Perera and Vishwa Fernando did in Durban. The 304 they ran down is also the most they have outside home.

Perera deservedly hogged the accolades for his stupendous hundred, but there was more to the story. Long before that stunning last-wicket partnership, Fernando had made decisive contributions in the Test. His four wickets in each innings bowled South Africa out for sub-300 totals in both innings for the first time in seven home Tests.

Fernando was playing just his fourth Test. Kasun Rajitha, who finished with four wickets, was playing his fifth Test. And Lasith Embuldeniya, the left-arm spinner, snared a five-for on debut. So good was Sri Lanka’s brand new attack that Suranga Lakmal, their most experienced bowler, finished with one wicket in the match.

Quinton de Kock admitted at the end of the opening day that South Africa were caught off guard against an attack they had no experience facing. But with just one Test remaining, time is short for them to figure things out.

The flip-side of Perera’s knock, however, is that it covered up for Sri Lanka’s batting worries. In three Tests before the Durban encounter, Sri Lanka had averaged 164 runs per innings. Sri Lanka are without Angelo Mathews, who is nursing a hamstring injury, and Dinesh Chandimal, their regular Test captain, who was dropped from the squad. Their absence puts the onus on the younger batsmen to step up as a unit, like the bowling did in Durban.

South Africa remain a formidable home team, with a world-beating pace attack and a prolific middle order. They have suffered a minor setback in the bowling, with Vernon Philander ruled out with a grade one hamstring strain, which puts 21-year-old Wiaan Mulder in line for a Test debut.

Sri Lanka have never won – or drawn – a Test series in South Africa. So irrespective of what happens in the second Test, history awaits. But a win will take some doing as South Africa haven’t lost a Test at Port Elizabeth in over eleven years.

Key players

Dale Steyn (South Africa): The home team’s spearhead has bowled with renewed purpose and vigour since becoming his country’s leading wicket-taker in Test cricket. Steyn has explicitly stated that he feels as though he’s starting over again since breaching the landmark. That is ominous for batsmen around the world.

Suranga Lakmal (Sri Lanka): Sri Lanka have only played one Test at Port Elizabeth before, and Lakmal took a five-for on that occasion. Lakmal’s experience will be handy as he will be required to lead this inexperienced Sri Lankan attack.

Vishwa Fernando was Sri Lanka's other hero in Durban, picking up eight wickets and starring in a record last-wicket partnership Vishwa Fernando was Sri Lanka's other hero in Durban, picking up eight wickets and starring in a record last-wicket partnership
Conditions

Fast bowlers thrive at St. George’s Park, with offspinner Hugh Tayfield’s 14 wickets, which puts him at 12th place, the best among spinners. There is a chance of scattered showers on the opening day, but the weather should clear up, and hold, for the subsequent days.

Should make for a good match.

However, I have a feeling we will come out all guns blazing :faf

South Africa won the toss and elected to bat.

SA 16/3 - Wow Sri lanka exposing hosts once again, if they won the series here would be amazing achievement.

South african top order has become absolutely pathetic, however i still back them to win this match against sri lankans

I'm looking forward to seeing the Mulder kid do his things. From his stats, he looks like a Kallis-lite.

Bit of sideways movement with new ball but now in 23rd over looks like a good batting deck . 62/3

Great to see arrogant SA put in their place. What a humiliation is coming if they lose this series.

SA could get whitewashed here lol. SL is high on confidence against SA with 4 Test wins in a row. They can bat against whatever SA has to throw at them. It is SA's batting that is exposed. You don't lose a wicket to a part timer

We shouldn't be talking in such language when we just got whitewashed by them in test series. SA very well put some arrogant pakistani fans like you in their place (only in tests though, we were far superior in ODIs).

Vishwa gets some movement. But other than that this is pie bowling lol Can't believe SA collapsed against them.

not much in the pitch . I suppose SA will struggle to keep visitors under 300 .126/4

Markram's conversion issue continues. OUt for 60. SA is not in good shape. If SL bats well in the first innings they will nail this test as well.

Amla stocks are going down thick and fast. I understand if you flounder against a world class attack. This is such a barely average bowling attack compared what he has faced all his life.

15,0,19,6,3,16,0 These are his most recent scores agaisnt Srilanka.

It's quite embarrassing. He should seriously consider if he wants to continue with cricket. I can't imagine it's very fun for him at this stage.

Steyn is definitely not the same Steyn in terms of his skills. But it is inspiring to see him run at the same speed to deliver each ball. Mone Morkel looked very good when he called it a day. I bet Steyn would want the same. HE is still a high class bowler. Ngidi will grab his spot in the future. Till then let us enjoy this legend.

Rabada has to produce one of those dramatic spell to help SA come back in this game. Given the way SL chased in the 4th innings of the last Test they would want more than a substantial lead.

One of the advantage for Srilankans is they use Kookaburra in srilanka not SG balls or DUke balls.

I always enjoy him this time of the day. Especially if we've been fielding all day. He turns it up an extra notch (dial it to 11) that lifts the spirit of the entire team. I'm really going to miss the legend :steyn

Besides that freak innings of Perera, main thorne for SA from Srilanka has been Karunaratne

4 tests 411 runs. Others including Matthews didn't score much.

In terms of bowling Viswa Fernando has been a huge difference here. Playing only his 2nd test against SA. 11 wickets already.

SA batting in last 3 innings has been deplorable . This surely was not a 222 pitch .
Huge effort needed by bowlers if hosts are to compete from here . 17 for none .

Agreed. SL deserve this series victory. We've been pathetic.

Rabada has been off color since the last series & he & Steyn conceded 168 runs for 3 wickets in 40.3 overs in that 304 chase . Ngidi should have played here .

I bet Faf will come out with the predictable answer "Pitch behaved like subcontinent pitch"

SL is bossing Steyn and Rabada. Infact if you include the 3 tests in SL they have not been effective. These are their two best bowlers.

One thing is sure. You can't bully Srilankans. If they had come here straightaway before going to NZ and Australia they would not have been this comfortable. After getting battered and bruised they have come here as a toughened up unit. Faced some high quality bowlers like Boult, Wagner, Cummins, Starc.

How did Pakistan lose 3-0 to this Saffer team?

Because our cricketers play against reputations and not what’s happening on the ground.
Maybe that’s a bit unfair, making it sound like a case of having the skills and the confidence. But what can one say for guys like shafiq and Azhar Ali. If you’ve travelled across the world and played for a decade or so but come undone against South Africa it’s probably because you are not very confident of your skills. The Sri Lankan bowling has done quite well collectively compared to ours. As happy as I am for Sri Lanka, it simply highlights how bad Pakistan were in terms of skills and attitude.

It is hard to compare. Scenarios, bowling combination, captaincy lot of things. IN my view advantage for Srilankans

1) They are very much used to kookaburra ball. THat is what they use in domestic as well
2) They are uber-confident against SA after their white wash at home
3) They are coming here after two really tough tours
4) They have some unknown bowlers who could catch SA off guard
5) They are not scared of bouncers. Not that they play well. But they don't mind taking blows.

Olivier was the biggest difference in that series. They have completely negated him here. Also they have reduced AMla into a tailender.

I said SL has negated Rabada next ball wicket. Just now i said they ahve negated Olivier. Olivier got a wicket :) I have cursed SL inadvertently

RSA 222
SL 53/2 (18.1 Ovs) CRR: 2.92
Day 1: 3rd Session - Sri Lanka trail by 169 runs

I actually think Azhar is done at this level. He looked absolutely helpless against high quality pace. Shafiq will continue score soft runs as always. But in terms of attitude, I liked the way the likes of Shan and Babar took on the bowling. I've rarely seen Pakistani batsmen play with such conviction on a tour of SA. Maybe Anwar and Azhar Mahmood did in 98 but that's it. Neither do I think there was such a massive skill difference. Pakistani bowling attack is very skilful. I think the difference was only the pace of both sets of bowlers. If PAK bowlers could bowl at the pace of Steyn/Rabada/Olivier , SA batsmen - Amla, Faf, Qdk would've collapsed cheaply too!

De Kock again holds Proteas first innings together

Thursday, 21 February 2019

The Standard Bank Proteas produced an uncanny replica of their first innings batting effort in the first Castle Lager Test match against Sri Lanka at Kingsmead when the second Test match got under way at St. George’s Park on Thursday.

The end result was that they got dismissed for 222 runs compared with the 235 they made in Durban. This is, however, a contest between two struggling top-orders and they were still well in the game at the close of play with Sri Lanka on 60/3 still trailing by 162 on the first innings.

This time Faf du Plessis opted to bat first rather than having his team inserted as was the case in the first game. But thereafter there was a distinct similarity as the Proteas lost 3/15 compared with the 3/17 at Kingsmead; then had a slight recovery that was again ended when Du Plessis was dismissed in the lunch over; and then was again held together in the afternoon session by Quinton de Kock, who in spite of being hampered by an apparent cramp, managed another innings in the 80s (86 off 87 balls, 12 fours).

He seemed well set for his second century of the home summer as he gave a display of peerless timing and strokeplay against the Sri Lankan seamers on what was a good surface in spite of the low total.

The introduction of spin brought about his demise as he struggled to move comfortably.

The Proteas went into the match needed a sound foundation if they were to get the win they needed to square the series, but it was not to be. Aiden Markram (60 off 116 balls, 9 fours) provided good support for De Kock in the afternoon session when 112 runs were scored for the loss of 3 wickets.

There were partnerships of 58 for the fourth wicket, 57 for the fifth and 59 for the eighth but what the Proteas needed were a couple of century stands.

All three Sri Lankan seamers again troubled the Proteas specialist batsmen with Vishwa Fernando leading the way with his 3/62 in 18.2 overs. This included dismissing Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla with successive deliveries in his new ball spell that put the home side on the back foot from the start.

Fernando now has 11 wickets in the series while De Kock has joined first Test hero Kusal Herera as the only batsmen with an aggregate of more than 200 runs.

The Proteas used their three frontline seamers to work their way through the Sri Lanka top order with new cap Wiaan Mulder having to wait until the second morning to get his first bowl.

I don't think Srilankans were breathing fire either. They were mostly bowling at 130k. But they were able to nibble a bit. But Faf's dismissal is horrendous. He yorked himself against a dibbly dobbly part timer who was bowling at 110 kph. Wonder if there are some mental scars as well against SL.

Rabada looks somehow jaded , fatigued at his age sounds silly - if i were a SA selector , i would rest him from white ball cricket & play only in crucial ODI'S . . Steyn should think of retirement . I wonder if any good pacers around besides Ngidi who i like . Rabada + DO + Ngidi will be their pace attack for next few years . I hope this young guy Mulder can bowl . All good Test teams must play a decent wicket taking 5th bowling option .
60/3 at close . Looks like it again boils down to innings 3 & 4 as any major lead [ say 50+ ] on either side looks unlikely . Still , the fixing gods say 1-1 here .
Any final words on how pitch is & likely to be going ahead from posters ?

Not a lot of sideways movement. Little bit there. As one woudl expect pitch has a bounce. Pace is nominal. Neither too quick nor two sluggish. They found the edge regularly with a bit of movemnet. Wonder if it is faf's misjudgement or not ball always landed safely multiple times.

Sri Lanka putting up a strong show.

Showing Pakistan how it should have been done.

PE is slow compared to other pitches there . Good bowlers say you just need little deviation to take the edge or induce a false shot .
I was expecting a grassier surface with more moisture as clay content here does not lend itself to hardness & hence pace . Caught the match very sporadically due to some issues at home .Hopefully tomorrow i can watch longer .

They are even missing their main spiner EMbuldeniya due to finger injury for the entire match. So it looks even more embarrassing for SA to be bowled out with the help of part timers.

As well as India.

How so? It happened way back with a different team composition and different conditions. Pak/SL series is back to back series. We saw how SL did in Australia and New zealand. It is more to do with significant downgrade in quality of SA post the exit of Morkel/ABDV. Not one player from Srilanka will find a spot in the Indian side.

Well that's the thing, SRI Lanka is a number 5 or 6th ranked test team while RSA is still 2nd.

RSA is actually at full strength since ABD is neither injured nor banned i.e. retired from Cricket. For example, I wouldn't say SRI Lanka is without Mahela, Sangakarra, Murali, Herath, etc since they all retired.

Spending time in NZ and Australia helped Sri Lanka.

Not sure you watched the match. These bowlers are barely average bowlers apart from Lakmal. Their main spinner didn't even bowl due to finger injury. They were losing wickets to ordinary bowling of part timers. What is there to learn. One good aspect is their courageous batting in both tests. They are willing to take the blows even though they are not comfortable against bouncers. I will give full credit to srilanka on that aspect. But their bowling is mhe. SA batsmen should feel embarrassed to get rolled over by this bowling unit.

QDK back in touch and is the best batsman at the moment for this struggling SA team.

Don't think there are any mental scars. Faf and Amla are just done. They only performed against Pakistan but it's time they retire. Need the likes of Zubair Hamza, janneman Malan etc. to take over from these has beens.

TBF, if you ask Asian sides which 2 grounds they would prefer to play in SA, they would easily choose Durban and PE. SL got their wish.

Lasith Embuldeniya, the Sri Lanka left-arm spinner, has been ruled out for up to six weeks, after dislocating his finger on the first day of the Port Elizabeth Test.

Embuldeniya left the field on Thursday, 21 February, with his left thumb covered in blood after attempting a return catch off Kagiso Rabada in his sixth over. The extent of the injury was so severe that he was scheduled for surgery the same evening.

It is not yet clear whether he will be available to take the field during the match again, but reports suggest he will not be able to bowl.

Given that he’s Sri Lanka’s only specialist spinner in the XI, the visitors will have to do some tweaking. One of Sri Lanka’s part-time bowlers – Dhananjaya de Silva, most likely – is expected to pitch in.

Sri Lanka, having won the first Test in Durban, have a great chance to win their first-ever series in South Africa, but Embuldeniya’s injury is a severe blow to those hopes.

The 22-year-old played a big role in Sri Lanka’s victory in Durban, claiming a five-wicket-haul on debut in the second innings.

Big blow. This guy was very impressive in the first test. Would have had a big say in the second innings here.

One thing I like about him is his ability to find grip and turn of the surface.

The guy who added 76 for the last wicket is out injured. I bet SA wish he had got injured in the first Test rather than this Test :)

SA will need a pretty big lead to defend if the 1st test is anything to go by.

SL has nothing to lose here. With 10 batsmen they will put their best forward. Worst case drawn series. They will take it. SA will not settle for 250 plus.

De kick gone SL has a sniff of series win. But batsmen say it is a very very difficult pitch score runs. They have only 10 players. Rooting for SL This will be one of the greatest underdog story in Teat match history

I posted in the first test thread of this series that for some non-cricketing reasons my gut feeling is that Sri Lanka will win this series.

Still maintain the same.

If SL can wrap up the SA tail quickly here then they could cause one of greatest series wins ever and it would be fully deserved if they pull it off.

Lead 173 at moment.

The odds for Sri Lanka winning the series were 80/1.

Would be a miracle if they could pull it off

It would be awesome for SL, and maybe exactly what SA needs to get rid of some dead weight.
